After searching yelp for a great optometrist, I found Lakeside Optical. I can't speak for any experience with glasses, but like the other 5-star reviews, I loved my experience for contact fitting and eye exam. Dr. Kuo was delightfully intelligent, patient, and thorough. Some optometrists at small shops will try to rush through your exam but Dr. Kuo took the time to scrutinize my vision and make recommendations based on my needs. On top of that, it's evident that her priority is finding the right lenses for the patient. I had been wearing contacts that didn't fit my eye to my liking but that many other optometrists sent me home with time and time again. After listening to my financial position, she recommended several options within my price range and sent me home with more than 5 different lenses to try at home for a week at a time. I've never had an optometrist send me home with this many trials to ensure that the contacts I purchase are the best ones for me. Have to say when thinking about getting glasses its always a very long process the places are big and just with crazy options- Lakeside Optical is a great place to go. Its a small establishment but with many many options and the process was not painful at all! I didn't feel overwhelmed and Emmanuel (the owner) even helped out with picking some frames. Not having insurance makes it hard to find an eye doctor that will accept you and not make you pay a fortune for a pair of glasses. (I understand glasses are expensive, I've worn them for a good while now) But walking in and asking about prices, It seemed most affordable, At least compared to all of the other places I went too. Dr. Jane Kuo and Emmanuel are awesome and I can't recommend them enough! I came in yesterday for an eye exam to have my prescription updated. Dr. Kuo has great chairside manners and although seeing an optometrist always makes me nervous, she totally put me at ease right away. She explained everything she was doing as she went along, and thoroughly explained her findings at the end. After the exam, Emmanuel patiently picked out a few frames for me to try on even though he knew I wasn't ready to commit to anything just quite yet. Just recently I visited Lakeside obstacle for the second time. All of the great service I had talked about in my earlier review was still there : once again Emanuelle was patient and good humored as I went through the selection process. For the past few years, my head has outgrown most standardized pair of frames. It's been quite difficult getting glasses that's not inconvenient. The previous pair of glasses I had was airy and nice but the legs were too long. If I wasn't looking straight or I was sweating or there was more oil in my nose than usual, the glasses would slide off. On many occasions, I felt I was re-fitting the glasses every other minute. And it was frustrating. The glasses before that had great overall fit except the legs squeezed on my temples to the point that my temples hurt in some days: I assumed my head would get used to it over time but after over a year, the feeling just got worse. I've generally had to make comprises with getting a pair of glasses. Especially in the optical stores I visited in the past, after around 5 pair of glasses, there was immense pressure to 'settle'. And when I would complain to both my parents and the optician about the fit, my usual response was that 'this was how glasses was supposed to feel' or 'there's no glasses that fits perfectly'. In fact, it wasn't until my previous pair of titanium glasses from Japan (which costed quite more than the generic options) that I realized that it wasn't the norm to have the sides of my head squeezed. Now, a few days ago, I just decided I couldn't take the constant re-fitting with my hand and decided for a new pair of glasses. To me, this was a huge step cause I've had poor experiences with medicals in the US despite insurance: the one time I had glasses done in the US when I was in elementary, the price of the glasses even after insurance was quite steep. And of course, as I am more aware of the prices in Korea, my only thought process was, "I just have endure another half a year before I get a new pair of glasses". However, I do also know in Korea that there's not really any glasses that fit me (at least with most glasses I test). And it's really difficult in general to test glasses because after around 5, you kind of have to settle down on one. Well, I looked at the yelp and google reviews of Lakeside and decided to take the risk (the Lakeside site content is pretty much non-existent). I took an eye exam somewhere else and had to tell the workers there (the environment was quite pressuring) that I was not going to get glasses from them. I originally visited Lakeside to do both eye exam and look for a pair of glasses (with a possibility of leaving without a pair of glasses [as my previous pair is fine vision wise]). Lakeside for now does not do eye exams. So I ended up going back and forth to get the eye exam numbers to give the glasses in Lakeside a try. I must say that the store let me literally just grab any glasses I see and test it out without issues. I don't think I would have been able to test that many glasses elsewhere. And trust me, finding a one I was content with was not easy. I kind of felt guilty trying so many pair of glasses but to some miracle, exactly one pair of glasses fit well. The fact this store allows the customer to take the time to find a pair of glasses in my worldview is a huge plus for giving this store a try. While the new pair of glasses certainly isn't 'perfect', it is without a doubt the best pair of glasses I've worn. It is made of aluminum and very light. And the glasses feel relatively airy to wear and does not fall off unlike my previous glasses. I am giving this store a 5 for putting up with me when I was just taking out glasses to give a shot. I think that's a critical experience most optical stores don't give. How am I supposed to know which pair of glasses I want if I can only try around 5. From all this experience, I definitely think a 5 is warranted to this store. And I believe the price was well reasonable for the services I got to getting this pair of glasses. Also, while Emmanuel told me it would take around 5 days for my glasses to be finished, I believe it was done within 2 days. So there's that too. And he was quite friendly when I asked him a question I think many opticians don't like sharing (regardless of intent). I got lenses from this place. The guy is really smart and friendly, and had the best prices. The optician down the block on Ocean + Junipero Serra started basic lenses at 99 and added 65 or more for extras, and Lenscrafters is 130 for basic lenses. I got lenses plus UV protection for 85 here. The guy really knows what he is doing, and is friendly and intelligent. Had a great time talking to him while getting the frames fitted. The selection looks decent, a lot of high end brands like Gucci and Givenchy which I don't remember seeing anywhere else. Givenchy is a name I like. I highly recommend this place for a knowledgeable, honest optician at fair prices. read more

I made an appointment for an eye exam via telephone and was told I would get a confirmation call a few days before the appointment. I did not get a confirmation call but assumed it would have been to confirm I was still coming, not the other way around. I called the phone numbers on their website and listed on Yelp. No answer. Foolishly I still went to the office thinking the office manager just forgot to call to confirm my appointment. Doors were closed. Lights were off. Obviously closed. Completely unprofessional. I understand most places have limited scheduled but I clearly remember being told the doctor comes in on Mondays and Thursdays. I took time off from work for nothing. I made a new visit appointment to see an optometrist, and since they're open on Saturdays I was able to get one quickly. Appointment was with a wonderful doctor, Dr. Acquino. She was patient, friendly, thorough, and explained everything regarding my eye exam. So it was a very pleasant eye exam something that is not typical in my experience. Next I went to Emmanuel who helped me fill my eyeglasses prescription. He told me about a special they have ongoing where one may get a package price. This included a high end frame, non glare lenses, and blue light shield. It also included a lesser value but still good quality extra pair of eyeglasses with plain lenses. There is no way I could have gotten such an excellent deal at the other lens place (chain) at the nearby shopping mall. Emmanuel also helped me to replace lenses in my old sunglasses for a more than fair price. I love lakeside optical!!! Long story short - my glasses got a huge scratch in them, and it had been awhile since I had gotten an eye exam. I was in need of new glasses, and even though Lakeside was nearby, I had never been in until just recently. First off, Dr. Jane Kuo was the optometrist who did my exam. She was super sweet and very professional. I loved the fact that I could stop in and have an exam (almost impromptu - she did have an appointment still going on when I first got there), and pick out new glasses the same day. I would recommend making an appointment with her first, though - she even has Saturday hours! They have super trendy and fashionable glasses - I couldn't choose, so Emmanuel helped me find some frames that worked well with my face shape. Now, I get tons of compliments on my new glasses!! I bought two pairs of eyeglass frames and three sets of lenses from Emmanuel two years ago. He converted an old frame to computer/bifocals back then. I returned today with a problem. My computer/reading bifocals had loose temple pieces. Mostly from wear and tear. I dropped them off and returned 45 minutes later. The frame was as good as new. And he refused to charge me for his time and expertise. This is the kind of person he is. He is an old fashioned, personal service provider who is price competitive with the big, commercial providers. Highly recommend him. First went to see him because he was nice to my wife.
