It is places like this that nurture my ever growing love for Oslo. Here you get genuine Pakistani food, and a genuine and unapologetic atmosphere. Just as in many places in Grønland, stepping through the doors on Lahori Dera is stepping out of Scandinavia. The food is not adjusted to Scandinavian tongues, the regulars sit at their usual table by the counter and the TV plays Pakistani television. There is even a can of water next to the toilet, familiar to anyone who have visited any middle eastern country.
Some year ago a friend took me here for a really cheap lunch - 35 kr for a shish kebab roll and one samosa with sauce. Great food to an incredible price!
This week I went back to try out something else - I picked the lamb curry. 105 kr for a quite big bowl of curry with lots of rice, salad (with a savory yoghurt dressing) and bread. It was really delicious. And really hot! Be warned: the peppers in this curry ain't any sweet peppers, nor are they the mild jalapeño style ones you get at your usual kebab place. So be smart (smarter than me) and avoid making a fool of yourself (which I obviously did) by leaving them unbitten. I like places that makes me feel like a stupid tourist even while being in my home city. read more
