"poke bowl" w overripe mangoes, and a creamy dressing.
    One P.

Note this is only about one dish. I had a pretentious Poke bowl for an early dinner. Clearly the line cook does not have a sense of Umami that's is so integral to Asian and Island cuisines. It was so sweet even after adding salt, soy sauce and wasabi a creamy sweet flavor persisted. The proprietor should consult with someone who knows Asian and Pacific based preparations. BTW, it's true Oslo meals are expensive even by San Francisco standards. A cautionary note. FYI they use frozen shrimp and frozen potatoes for their French fries. YIKES

I had a great experience there on a rainy night-- had the salmon sashimi (so many pieces) and then the fish soup. If I knew the soup would contain both salmon and whitefish, I might have skipped to just the soup. The soup itself was a nice between hearty and light broth containing so many pieces of seafood! Waitstaff was friendly. Prices are reasonable for what you get.

This fishmonger is situated in Oslo's Mathallen, a large trendy space that has a variety of gourmet shops and restaurants. There's a relaxed vibe with people enjoying food and drinks. This place specializes in fresh fish and you can buy anything from fresh whale steaks to prawns and langoustine. Everything looks and tastes very fresh and done to a high standard.

Great place for your seafood delights. I loved the fish soup but a lot of people ordered fish n chips. Tried the local draft all out on the cool patio. I def recommend this place.

While visiting the mathallen Oslo I stopped her for a beer and a snack. The inside is part of a market so not much to say about the interior (same goes for the outside seating.) After waiting ages for someone to take my order finally I flagged a waiter down. Bad start. I ordered the fiskesuppe. This type of soup is a staple in Norway. And although the mussels were nice and the salmon roe was a nice touch, the overall soup has no flavor and the fish was way overcooked and weirdly dry. Maybe try something else there, but the menu is limited so you think they would nail this. Anyway the market has better options.

Part of a large food hall with lots of options. The dinner I chose was the grilled organic salmon fillet with salad and sweet potato fries. You can eat in the restaurant area. I was with friends who wanted a variety of choices. So we ate in the common area and I had a portable buzzer that buzzed me when the food was ready. Then we could all eat the variety of options if the food hall together. The fish was delicious, cooked medium, flaked apart with a fork. If you want wine, beer or an alcoholic beverage, go to Torget Bar. You can enjoy those in the common dining area. Have fun in Norway.

Food: Absolutely fresh and delicious! We had our first meal here after landing in Norway and it was such a pleasant surprise! We ordered a dish that was featured around monk fish and the sweet shrimp! Both dishes were full of flavor and it was my first introduction to sweet shrimp here! Cost: The prices were a tad on the more expensive side however considering where we are and that these were seafood dishes, I thought it reflected the meal well. Environment: The place felt like a very busy cafeteria, but more sophisticated! There were various places you can choose to order food from and also buy fresh ingredients/products for the people who live around the area. Service: Good service! Our orders were put in and the food came out without too much wait! Uniqueness: Fresh ingredients for sale and the fact that you can order fresh meals that are made from these ingredients give this place a high uniqueness factor!

Seafood here is excellent. We were happy with everything that was on our table. We had a large enough group to sample a number of their dishes and all of them were good. The scampi and the king crab were delicious and were recommended on yelp. The restaurant can seem busy on the ground floor but there is more seating upstairs which most people miss. So, do not turn away if it looks crowded downstairs. Have a peek upstairs before you go somewhere else. This place is good!

    Shrimp plate. Delicious!

My family and I ate at Vulkanfisk on a Sunday night as our last big meal in Oslo. I found this restaurant via googling "seafood restaurants", and it met the price point we were looking for (aka something on the cheaper $$ side). OMG everything was AMAZING. I felt like we ordered almost everything off the menu! - Mussels & Fries - Shrimp Plate - Fish of the Day - Seafood soup - Crab Legs - Garlic Shrimp Scampi My personal order was the mussels, and let me tell you, it's a lot of mussels! All the portions were pretty large besides the shrimp scampi. The shrimp plate was amazing, the shrimp was so sweet! Also, the king crab legs had an asian fusion flavor to them (we think they use black bean paste as the seasoning) and it was soooo good, I was dipping bread into the sauce at the end. We were a party of 6, and our bill came out to around $250, which I found very reasonable for a seafood dinner in Norway! (Norway is very expensive) One down side was that there were limited seating for large groups, we got lucky and snagged 2 tables to combine next to each other, so I would recommend more for 2-3 ppl party sizes.

We circled around the Vulkan food hall, and settled on this place for lunch, which is located at the far end. Glad we did, because the food, as every review attests, is simply delicious. We wanted to try everything, but thankfully the waiter was kind enough to point out that we were ordering too much already, and offered to make just one fish fillet so we don't have to order a whole fish and chips. We ordered the peppered king crab. This is what the menu says: "King crab is the ultimate shellfish Norway can offer. The juicy and sweet crab meat is truly unique." Yup, they did not lie. The crab was freaking finger-licking good indeed, with a spicy pepper sauce and served on a hot plate. Interestingly it is reminiscent of the salt and pepper crab in Chinese or Vietnamese places, lol. Norway also has delicious mussels in its cold water, so we ordered one. A big bowl with plenty of shellfish, in a buttery white wine broth. Again, delicious to the last drop, and at 184kr, a relatively good deal. We practically rolled out of there, so stuffed were we...

Food: We split the crab plate, which was pretty good. It was large enough for two people, but would've been way too big for one. The crab was definitely fresh, however it had very little meat in it which was disappointing. It came with garlic bread, a side salad, and three different aliolis. All very good. I would recommend getting a different dish though. Ambience: It's part of a restaurant marketplace, but they have there own little corner, as well their own upstairs seating. It wasn't very crowded. It's a pretty casual place. Service: decent service, we sat at the bar and got served right away. Price: Each dish is between $20-$30 Overall: Good place, I would come back to try something else.

    King crabs! So good!!
    Chao X.

King crab is a must here! I don't wanna eat any other similar king crabs in the states anymore! I'm happy to report that the true Norwegian King crab is so fresh, plump, and juicy! The Asian black pepper style of cooking totally brings out the sweet and umani flavors out of the crab meat! Finger-licious! Also it comes with a big bowl of salad with bread so it's definitely can make you full.

There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check.
