We were in Oslo last week and wanted to try the local seafood. We had two restaurants in mind and decided to go to Solsiden. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a nice young lady and asked her for a table for 5. She said, hold on and that she would be right back. Less than 30 seconds later, a skinny man in all black with a thin mustache comes up to the front. He looks at me, no greeting, no smile, and then with this look and a roll of his head of what do you want, said, "yes?" I told him, the other female was already helping us. He then said, what do you want. I proceeded to tell him we were wanting a table for 5. He then said, we have no table when clearly there were tables open and no one else waiting. My husband then said, well she told us to wait. He replies with, "She is a nobody here. Just a waitress. She knows nothing. We cannot seat you." We travel to a foreign country only to be met with racism! Asian group walks in and automatically turns us away. Thankfully this was our only bad experience in Norway. All I have to say to that man is you did us a favor because we ended up at Lofoten and had the best meal and service ever! Spent over a $1,000 on our bill and didn't care. This restaurant was highly recommend however I was highly disappointed. Everything about this restaurant should give you the impression of receiving great service and good food. Everything here was simply, just fair or special, not good and not great considering it's reputation and price. Upon our arrival the host stand seem to be the beginning of confusion and poor service. It's one of those restaurants with all hands on deck causes too many hands in the pot! Once seated several people came to assist us and it wasn't because of the language barrier each one of them spoke English fluently. We placed our order, got our food, ate it was full but not necessarily satisfied. There was one server she was pretty decent but the rest of the experience was mediocre. The only standout were the scallops, perfectly cooked and delicious. Look at the pictures because I really don't have the energy to discuss my average meal! I came here during the summer (in June) and had an excellent meal. The seafood was so fresh and they had many appealing options so it was hard to choose. Instead of opting for their set three course menu of the day, I ordered my own starter, main course and dessert selection. The grilled scallops with smoked parsley mayonnaise, baked celeriac and apple vinaigrette were excellent. I loved the monkfish with lobster risoni, marinated shrimps, fennel salad and lobster gravy. The dessert marinated pineapple with passion fruit cream, coconut meringue and banana and passion fruit sorbet was a highlight. We were kind of a big group and the service was helpful and friendly. Some of our group got the fresh seafood platter and I tried some of it. It was so good. I highly recommend a visit to Solsiden for authentic and delicious seafood, while in Oslo. read more

I was invited here by a colleague for dinner. He tells me this place is open only three months of the year and is a converted pack house from the old days. It's a fairly big restaurant that specializes in local fresh seafood. It was packed when we got there and we have a lovely table by a window with sea view. The menu is fairly limited and they have a three course menu for the day or seafood platter. Unmistakably the best seafood platter I have ever had, and I have had a lot :-)) Fresh prawns, scallops, scampi, spider crab, snow crab, Norwegian Lobster, mussels and crab claws piled high on a share plate. It was divine. No need for condiments, bread or chips and add ons. Deep cold water seafood is simply something you cannot get it most places, caught daily and brought into Oslo harbour. Out waiter was excellent and very chatty and friendly. Service the whole evening was excellent and we had a fabulous evening. The wine list was good with a good selection of wines, albeit expensive, but then again, it's Norway ;-)) Close your eyes, order the seafood platter and burn your plastic, you won't regret it :-) read more

Solsiden has wonderful food, an amazing location, a wide array of options, and absolutely terrible service. For the price of the meal, we expected at least decent service, but we were a table of 7 waiting at least an hour for our starters and another half an hour for our food. Two of our guests were served their main course almost 45 minutes before the rest of the table. It wasn't until one of us said something that the manager and wait staff started to pay closer attention. Our desert was served within minutes after we had complained. The food was lovely, the location was amazing and the restaurant itself was comfortable. However, if you're trying to have a lovely, well catered meal, in under three hours, I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

The strongest feature of this restaurant is the setting. Gorgeous views of the harbor and fjord and an excellent spot to dine while enjoying a sunset. The interior is pleasant without being fussy, something it shares with many restaurants in Oslo. The service was decent though not impressive--again something it shares with most restaurants in town. The prices are quite high, even for Oslo, despite not quite deserving the moniker of "fine dining". Unfortunately the weakest feature is the food. We both ordered appetizers, and my wife's tartar of trout with asparagus, quail egg, Caviar of Kalix and dill sauce was the stand-out dish of the evening. It was down-hill from there, however, as my scallops were over-cooked (is there a greater seafood sin?). The entree presentations were lack-luster and served on plates which were cold and too small. Both of our fish entrees were also surprisingly over-cooked and massively salted. The turbot was served with a creamed lobster sauce which covered the entire plate, sides included, to a depth of 2cm. Lacking flavor or depth, it detracted even from the properly steamed vegetables. Desserts lean heavily on sorbets which sit melting in large puddles of sauce (we skipped). We considered ordering their Plateau des Fruits de Mer, which clearly is their signature dish and was an impressive pile of arranged seafood, including all the best bits you would want. Given how over-cooked the fish and scallops were I am happy to have saved the 695nk. We enjoyed the sunset, and the wine list was comprehensive, but at this price point there are many other better choices in town. read more

Solsiden was a truly wonderful experience! The staff was attentive, cordial and knowledgable, the ambiance is very nice and my meal was top notch. I chose the 3 - course menu: 1- Duo smoked trout and trout roe and small salad. Great pairing, trout was perfectly smoked (not too strong) and the roe very good. 2- Halibut served with julienned apple and almond salad presented on a risotto prepared using lobster bisque. Innovative and simply amazing! 3- Cake w/strawberries, ginger, mint and vanilla bean ice cream. Great finish to an awesome meal! My only complaint would be that the seating is a little tight, especially when they are busy. But don't let this stop you. Solsiden is a must if your in Oslo! read more

Best restaurant we visited in Oslo! We came in May and the weather was fantastic, so we were able to enjoy the beautiful views. I had the salmon with mussel sauce, which was by far the best salmon I've had in my life. I also tried the scallop appetizer, lobster, and monkfish. The lobster was not what we expected, but the other dishes were excellent. None come close to the salmon however. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Oslo! read more

I should probably be giving Solsiden only one star, but since we never got a chance to try the food I can't fully judge. Let me just say the service here is completely inept, it's as if all of them were having their first day as servers, even then it's only common sense on how to provide good service. We were sat right away for our 8pm reservation, and a server asked what we'd like to drink. He didn't know what wine or beer they had so he brought a menu...only one menu for the whole table, and there was no beer on it. We waited and waited and waited, and finally decided to get up and leave as this obviously was a sign of a horrible experience to come. I don't know about you but I don't enjoy spending large amounts of money on poor service, no matter how good the food is. Luckily there is another restaurant close by, Skur 33. They delivered excellent service and food so the evening wasn't a total loss. read more

The food is amazing, fresh and delicious, the view is beautiful, staff friendly and attentive. Four stars because their alcohol-free drinks are very limited. There is an impressive wine list, but two of the very few items in the alcohol-free section weren't even available when I was there with my husband and my mother, so I thought they should be able to do better on that front. read more

What is it about Northern European seafood that makes them better than equatorial seafood specially the shellfish. Maybe it's the cold waters. Solsiden reminds me our seafood in Paris, fresh and clean and very sweet. The seafood platter consisted of local snow and king crabs, the local crabs filled with roe, the exotic cold water sweet prawns, the roe-filled with sweetness shrimp and that mussels where all just perfect. Really. It is that amazingly good. Much better than what we get in the US. And if your on a cruise ship and lucky to just dock a spitting distance away then your one lucky person and don't miss it. It's worth coming back to Oslo alone. Oh well as they say better to have tasted than not at all. read more

Pretty great food. At the expert recommendation of Tine V, I stopped here on my last night in Oslo for a "splurge" meal. Housed in an unassuming building with almost all windows facing west, located right under Akershus on the seaside, if only it hadn't been a little overcast tonight, I would have been treated to a great sunset during dinner. I started out with the confit of king crab. This was a little underwhelming. I'm not sure what made it confit, but it was basically a few slices of leg meat, a sort of "crab meat salad" and white and green asparagus with some greens and a little vinaigrette. It wasn't bad, it just didn't grab me as I was eating it the way that it grabbed me when I read it off the menu. The flavors were fine, but I was expecting something a bit more interesting. But no fear, because the redfish with shrimp and octopus, risoni (which I know as orzo), and "shellfish sauce" was pretty awesome. The fish was rich and meaty, almost like a monkfish. Good flavor without being overpowering. Along with that were several chunks of grilled octopus, the texture of which I love, and the grilled flavor was great. There was a nice large helping of orzo, and in with that were a good helping of tender shrimp, all of which was bathed in what I would almost call a rich seafood stock. It was a little foamy when served, so I almost got excited that there was foam...but no. It was just the broth. Alongside of this was a nice, undressed salad with strips of softened chilled fennel bulb. I dig that fennel in salad is a trend now, because it's really delicious. Especially cooked, with it's mild flavor, I love it in with greens. Service was quick and friendly, and English menus were, as has been the case everywhere (so I am not sure why I keep mentioning it), not a problem. Nor was my signature only credit card - because it seems like many places are not able to handle a card that requires a signature, I've been carrying around a stupid amount of cash on this trip, and have been bleeding it down these last couple days so I don't have to change it back to dollars and eat another transaction fee on the deal. So I needed the card tonight. I would totally come back here, but doubt I'll have the change for a long time. I wish I had come with someone, because people tucking in to the huge seafood platter looked like they were having an amazing meal as well. read more

In a word: Amazing. I ate here with my mother a while back, and, well, I never thought I'd get sick of shrimp but I did. But we did. In one sitting. We ordered the seafood platter--which was incredible. Piled high with seafood, we kept ordering white wine to wash it all down. But there was so much shrimp, neither of us could eat it for quite some time. But in a good way. In a decadent way. In a Solsiden kind of way. Everything is pricey in Norway; get over it, or get out. This is worth it. It might not be the most cutting edge, but it's great; and to soak up the never-ending sunlight (summer only!), just keep ordering wine and eating shrimp. I only had a single night in Oslo and arriving right at dinner time: I was so ready to slam down some seafood! First and foremost the setting is DIVINE. Perfectly lit pier, great after dinner stroll. The restaurant had me a little skeptical at first. I waited politely at the "wait to be seated" area and not one staff member acknowledged that I was standing there. All the kitchen staff did however; but it felt like it was because I was skimming on the last hour of service they were just about ready to clean up and get outta there! 7 minutes passed and I finally got a seat. At times the service would be super on point: my waiter was super friendly and helpful and enjoyed my attempts on devouring their half lobster. Then at other times completely lacking. Dining solo, I was speedy with my choices and of course, eating (less talking more eating) but they often left me to start doing the "I'm looking at you, you know I'm looking at you" stare for their attention. Great location, not the best for couples/solo diners. Better suited for groups. The meals were unique in flavour combos and the coconut mousse dessert had me wanting to pay even more NOK! Overall decent but some complaints. We sat outside so only had the partial menu. The shrimp we quite good but hard to manage and so many you sort of get sick of them after a while honestly. The crab was unfortunately an awful deal as there were only a couple bites in it. The mussels were delicious though and the ambiance was absolutely lovely. They poured very small portions of wine. Nestled below the Akershus fortress it has a lovely ocean (or rather fjord) side location, I'll give it high marks for that. Our waitress was attentive and nice, but unfortunately the food disappointed. The best dish had, both my husband and I agree, was the tartar of trout appetizer. His scallops were a little over cooked, which should be a big no no for a place of this caliber. We both decided on the turbot with lobster sauce. Again the fish was over cooked and it was practically drowning in a sea of over whipped, thin oily lobster sauce, but the biggest problem was the salt. The dish was so over salted it pretty much ruined it for me, and I didn't finish it, which for a $ 50 fish dish is a bit of a shame :/ so location yay, food nay read more

I finally ate at Solsiden on a Sunday in early August, having talked about going there for ages, and hearing great things about their seafood from friends. The restaurant is located some distance down the dock from the city cetre, mening that it isn't the sort of place you would just chance upon finding, but all the better, in my opinion. We were greeted and shown to our table by a seemingly indifferent waiter. We had originally planned on sitting outside, but as the indoor dining area has extremely large, open windows and looks nicer, we decided against it - although we hadn't booked, we got a fairly decent table). We ordered the seafood tower, which was simply spectacular - a mountain of prawns, scallops, oysters, lobster and crayfish, served with a selection of sauces, bread and butter. Our waiter seemed less than wel-informed, however, and was not able to correctly identify whuch sauce was which. He also forgot to bring us the glass of wine we ordered as an aperitif, and instead brought this wine along with the one we ordered to go with the food. He also managed to pour water in my lap instead of in my glass... In general, the waiters were disposed to distribute their attention in proportion with the degree of fame of the guests (there were a couple of tables that were occupied by some lesser-known Norwegian celebrities). This was the main drawback of the evening, and somewhat marred the otherwise great location and excellent food. For dessert, I had the pistachio terrine, which was well-balanced and beautiful, although not among the most memorable desserts I have ever had. All in all, a visit to Solsiden should not be missed, as it is a great opportunity to splurge (the prices are up there, as could only be expected for seafood in Oslo) on a great seafood meal, but the place would certainly benefit from more pleasant and attentive waiters. read more

A lesser restaurant would have been wonderful given the view and level of service at Solsiden. However, the fish served at Solsiden does not play second fiddle to this in any way. It is impeccable and perfectly seasoned, not over salted or over cooked in any way. The one complaint is that the dishes were too busy. The fish is beautiful, there is no need to hide it behind unnecessarily complicated plating. For example, I started with the crab confit. With the crab was a seasoned mayo and a mango chutney. I didn't even touch the chutney as it was superfluous to the dish. There is lovely extensive wine list as well. read more
