The wine choice is the only thing good about this place, we had a 5 courses meal, the crayfish is saggy and taste like flour，the salmon was ok but the tusk was salty and raw. The whale is over cooked. There's hardly any balance of flavor. Each dish is either super salty or sweet or sour. I can hardly believe such level of awefulness with such a high price. The service is ok but I had lost my appetite after the crayfish. Feel free to go if you have the desire to be ripped off. read more

So disappointed. The oysters were good but the service and value were terrible. This is a place where you trick yourself into thinking the food tastes good, just because it was expensive. The waiter was rude. My napkin was on the table before any food arrived, and he grabbed it off the table and condescendingly threw it onto my lap. Also there was a HAIR in my friend's dish of ravioli... I have a picture posted to show it. Literally there was one piece of ravioli and it had a hair in it, so she obviously had to send it back. The chef brought her replacement and apologized. However, I was very surprised that they did not give anything complimentary despite the hair abomination... they should have brought a dessert or something on the house. Pretty disappointed. The best meal we have had anywhere in the world in the last year. The food was spectacular and the service genuine and friendly. This place is pricey but so is all of Norway. The menu is fixed with six courses offered but you get to pick which ones you want. There are three appetizers, a main, a cheese course and dessert. A couple of extras are available (oysters and bread) and there are two wine pairings suggested for each course. And a few amuse bouches/palate cleansers show up along the way. We had a stunning raw salmon appetizer with "its own roe", creme fraiche, asparagus and rye crumbs to start. It was followed by a minke whale teriyaki with sweet potato, followed by poached flounder with cauliflower, followed by hake, followed by cheeses and finished with a "nemesis cake" with strawberries and coffee ice cream. I went here for my birthday as a group of 4 people (we had reserved a table 3 days previously). We were seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant, which was slightly unfortunate, as the noise level is quite loud, and one of the party was an elderly lady who had trouble following the conversation. I recommend either going as a party of 2 or 3, or to bring your loudest friends :P We were taken well care of by a friendly and swift waiter, and the level of service at Fjord was generally good. The menu is a 6 course weekly set menu (two starters, one main, cheeses and dessert) from which you can choose 3,4, 5 or 6 courses (there is only one main course. There is also an accompanying wine menu, from which you can choose by the glass (NOK 100 per glass) - I really liked this concept, as I could have whichever wine from the menu I wanted with each dish. I chose 4 of the 6 courses, and as my husband chose the 2 dishes I hadn't picked, I got to sample the whole menu. As an appetizer, we were served a small plate of smoked mussels, smoked white fish (can't remember what sort) and squid. While I don't care much for squid, the mussels and fish were a delicious and promising start to the meal. My first starter, grilled trout with mango curry, bans and a vegetable samosa, was light, flavourful and zesty. However, my husband's starter of scallops with ponzu sauce was even better. My second starter, halibut with cauliflower pure, bacon and caviar was just as delicious, and even made me appreciate the large-grain type of caviar that I usually find to "fishy"-tasting. Our main course of cod with veal sauce, mushroom pure and braised celery received high praise all around the table - I especially thought the beet pure with lingonberry was a stroke of genius. The cheese board consisted of small (perhaps slightly too small) pieces of Norwegian cheeses (aged Jarlsberg, goat cheese, brie and blue cheese) with accompanying jams, and was much appreciated by my husband. My dessert of chocolate mousse, mocha ganache, salted caramel ice cream and raspberry coulis was good, but I must admit I had expected a somewhat more exciting and well balanced dessert after all the marvellous dishes that had preceded it. The ganache had a slightly unpleasant grainy quality to it (ground coffe beans, perhaps?), and the ice cream was a bit bland compared to other salted caramel ice creams I have tried before. To sum it up, I had a lovely and quite inspiring meal at Fjord, and would highly recommend eating there to anyone who appreciates the kind of "modern Scandi fine dining food" that so many Oslo restaurants are serving (most at far scarier prices than Fjord). A real birthday treat! read more

It pains me to write this because I was so hopeful that Fjord would be a wonderfully memorable dining experience. Memorable it was, but in quite a different way. The menu offered little choice. The fish of the day was whale. That's a subject I need not go into. The owner did offer us another choice:fried cod. Alright, I said, that would be fine. When we began to eat it, it was clear that it was not fresh CID at all but salt cod that had been insufficiently soaked in water to remove the salt. It was as if someone had salted the fish and the cap of the salt shaker had come off. We sent it back and were then told that they had halibut--a great favorite of ours and a fish I have cooked many times. It's a thick-cut fish and we like it cooked through. This came through one degree above sashimi and almost cold. At that point, I gave up the struggle and asked for the check. This very disappointing meal set us back $165.00. I chalk it up to experience and the meal did spoil an otherwise-fine visit to Oslo. But we warned, it is a ruinously town. After the disastrous dinner, we solaced ourselves with some frozen yogurt: the two small cups cost us $16.00. We will file for Chapter 11 when we get home. read more
