Seafood Stew
Eric B.

Elias Mat & Sant is located just around the block from the Hotel Bristol where Gayle and I were staying. We were one of the few lucky walk-ins this past Sunday evening as during our meal, we lost count of the number of folks who were turned away from this nicely appointed and cozy restaurant. Plus our corner table near a window was a perfect semi-private date night spot. The only partial negative about our experience was that the service was sometimes "distracted" which we feel was a "short staffed" situation, exacerbated by a full house and the before mentioned folks who couldn't be seated. This made us appreciated the kindness of the staff person who seated us even more. Elias Mat & Sant has a good online (and reservation friendly presence) which I highly recommend that folks wanting to dine here use. There are of course lots of other dining options in the area, but it was clear by the bustle and the menu that this place is a special choice. I chose the oven baked salmon, which was served with vegetables, celery root puree and small potatoes. Gayle's meal as seafood stew, which included while Gayle went for the seafood stew (crab, prawns, crayfish, mussels, scallops and cod in tomato sauce with fresh herbs, garlic and chilli). Her choice included grilled garlic bread, while the bread for the table was also included as part of our meals. The restaurant menu also offered some wine pairing recommendations of which who chose (and agreed) accordingly. It was a fantastic meal, although Gayle's seafood stew did require a bit of "work". On that note, a shell cracker would have helped. We finished our dinner off by splitting a dessert (thick milk panna cotta served with mullet sauce and hazelnut crokan) and 2 really great cups of locally sourced black coffee. And when we were done, a nice walk around town was in order.

Really lovely place! I was dining solo but made a reservation just in case on a Sunday and I'm glad I did! I had the Elk Carpaccio and the Ox Confit. Elk was fresh, bright and delicious. Ox was so tender and delicious but definitely rich! Pretty sure the potatoes were 87% butter (in a good way just couldn't eat it all!). Service was great (I don't speak Norwegian btw) and overall a pleasant night out in Oslo!

Super delish food. Great portions. Really cute ambiance. The only issue was the mediocre service. They were nice but kinda inattentive. Definitely make a reservation because it is small and seems like it gets busy. At least for dinner.

Loved of Norwegian meal after a difficult parking situation at our hotel. Decent beer selection and great starters. Smoked whale and the cheese plate went good with local Pilsner and brown ales. Reindeer stew is must try item here no exceptions ! Great meal in Oslo.

Salmon. So good and cooked to perfection.

Food was great and flavorful. Great service. Beautiful restaurant. The Norwegian entrecôte was very flavorful, tender and the vegetables very fresh. The reindeer stew was delicious. We paired everything with a nice red wine.

This was a great find for a taste of traditional Norwegian cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and our group of 7 had no problem conversing. I never thought I would eat reindeer, but the reindeer stew was hearty and tasty.

Great dinner! We started off with some complimentary bread which was so tasty! I had the oven baked salmon with vegetables. It was perfectly cooked and so tasty. I sampled the reindeer stew which was also excellent, the pieces of meat were small and had excellent flavor. Definitely stop here for Norwegian food!

This restaurant had excellent Scandinavian food and great service! We enjoyed trying some unique (to Americans) meals here including reindeer stew!

You also get to cook cheese and meat at your table. It's communal seating all at one large table, so be ready to meet your neighbors and chat. Everything was delicious and incredibly well done. You can also stay and/or camp there - we did in an RV. The views from the hall are fantastic as well. We also bought cheese and sausages.

There are two parts of this restaurant, the fancy dinner option (you must make reservations for this portion) and the cafe which is self service. My boyfriend and I did not know you needed reservations for the dine in option so we sat ourselves in the very welcoming cafe dining room. The menu for both are the same so no worries if you can't get a reservation. The self serve option can seem confusing initially but they have a lot of grab and go but you can also order hot meals by ringing a bell for the chef. Check out is right before you leave the self service area which makes it really easy. I felt the prices were really fair too. For food I got the meatballs and split pea stew. My boyfriend got reindeer with cream sauce and mashed potatoes. I absolutely loved my meatballs, they were sweet and savory, I did not really like the split pea stew though. My boyfriend loved his entire meal and cleared his plate. We also shared their most popular dessert which is the apple pie. It was really good, not too sweet which was perfect for us. Definitely come to this restaurant when visiting Oslo!

If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. FOOD - 4 stars...melding of Norwegian and American culinary sensibilities into appetizing dishes AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual and relaxing, the nice weather was the key advantage that evening SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive considering the crowds TOTAL - 4 stars...a good way to sample Norway through your palate RELATED - Exploring Norway?
