Mark Twain once said: "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead." I've mulled over my review for Statholdergaarden to find the right words to say, and thus I will keep it brief. There is only one thing that disappointed me about Statholdergaarden the entire time we were there. That's that they only have 1 Michelin star. This is easily a 2 Michelin star restaurant, if not a 3. Michelin people - get back in here! Food: Incredible. Absolutely indescribable. Each plate is nothing short of perfect. The only halibut in the world that rivals Marc Forgione's, and possibly the only menu-based dinner in my life where I can say that I loved every last bite. We did the five course tasting menu; descriptions in the pictures. Trying to fully write out how good this food tastes would only do it an injustice. Service: Potentially the best we've ever had. Our server, Henrik, was absolutely amazing. Hands down one of the most personable, knowledgable hosts I've ever met. Truly enhanced our meal and the experience as a whole. The rest of the staff was extremely attentive and professional as well. Ambiance: Perfect. Beautiful space; not too loud but not uncomfortably quiet either. Lots of space between the tables as well. I could go on for pages but I've said everything I need to. If you go to Oslo and you skip Statholdergaarden, you are making a huge mistake.

Make sure to call to make a reservation first and be prepared to have to go get more food to eat after spending at least $300 usd here. Customer service is excellent! They were very attentive since the time I walked in. They also took the time to show me the different wine that came with my 4 course wine pairing. Also, it came with 5 small amuse bouches--a mini taco with reindeer heart, what looked like a small cone with salmon mousse with caviar, chicken skin served on a cracker and another cone with something I forgot. The last amuse bouche was a spoon of white truffle risotto, which was very creamy and delicious. I ordered the four course menu with the four wine pairings. I got the turbot with the beet root. Beautiful presentation. Very light and the turbot was very fresh. Mussel ravioli and shellfish boullion. Presentation was beautiful. Ravioli was fresh and I could barely taste the mussel because it was so juicy and complemented the shellfish boullion so well. Venison with celery royal (which is celery with egg that's baked) and rosemary black salsify sauce. Deer was very gamey but still edible, the celery royal and the rosemary sauce added a graceful amount of salt to the dish. Dark chocolate and pear with mint sponge cake and red currant gel. Very light and refreshing Wonderful wine pairings. Definitely a must. Downsides: really expensive for a small amount of food. One thing that did bug me as it did throughout Norway was that after I had eaten, they didn't bother to brush off my tablecloth like they do in Seattle.

Fabulous meal. We did the tasting menu which was well worth the cost. It was actually surprisingly cheap given how expensive Oslo is.

We did not have a reservation, but luckily they managed to fit us in at a shared table. This place is extremely popular so I would highly recommend making a reservation. To start, we ordered the cod croquettes to share. Perfectly fried and golden brown, these croquettes were absolutely delicious and the accompanying sauce paired perfectly. For our entrées, I ordered the fish and chips while my husband ordered the creamy fish soup and my father ordered the fish gratin. All three dishes were fresh and delicious, but I think the fish gratin was my favorite. So if you find yourself an Oslo looking for a delicious meal down by the water, come check out Fiskeriet.

Disappointing to me they only serve Pepsi products - darn - had to go with a beer. Table next to me ordered the shellfish platter and it looked amazing. Had the ceviche and it was different from what I was expecting but excellent overall. Service was slow and seemed disjointed. I never could tell who my server was. Would definitely recommend.

The Salmon was another seafood restaurant on our list of places to eat while in Oslo…read more It was located in Aker Brygge which was a newer and expensive neighborhood. There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. It was the right choice as the rain really started to come down about that time. One caveat was that we had to wrap up our meal within 1.5 hours which wasn't a problem for us. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check. While tipping wasn't expected in Norway, the Salmon's credit card terminals start with a tipping option screen before you can pay. If you're curious about salmon farming in Norway then check out the exhibit at the other end of the restaurant.

The Salmon does an excellent job of showcasing the fresh and wonderful quality of salmon in many different dishes. The tasting plate was one of the best dishes they had. There were three different pieces of salmon with different accompaniment. I don't remember the exact cuts, but one was Lox, and the other was a cold smoke. My guest got a ginger salmon salad she loved. We also got the torched salmon nigiri to taste. The hype is real! This is definitely a must try! They get extremely busy, so a reservation is a must! They had indoor and outdoor seating with a heated patio (it was a bit chilly when we were there).

The chicken is breed the old fashion way- Breath of fresh air, fresh oat, wheat and corn and this combination makes the meat so juicy and tender. The burger itself is boneless (they remove bones), coleslaw, bbq sauce and a good dressing on top of a amazingly good bun. The bun actually makes the whole difference. It's so moist and tasty when you let the burger sit for a minute(if you got the patience to wait), it just suck up all of the good dressing and bbq sauce and that combined with the juicy chicken just makes it even better. I tend to go for the burger whenever I'm down at the local football pub watching a game and I combine this meal with a Brooklyn Lager. Good taste combined. The service is also great. No mocking around. Quick and done. Since they started up their local shoppe at Mathallen, the price has risen from a comfortable 60NOK to 90NOK. I personally think that's a little steep but I can't resist it. It's worth it. They also got a good chicken sandwich, but I've never eaten it. (Never change a winning team) but I've heard it's also very good. It's not only burgers and sandwiches at Stangeriet, they also sell wings, thighs and whole chickens. It's definitely worth a try and a chicken for sunday supper is a winner.
