Walked right in on this cold January day. Was seated immediately. Beautiful atmosphere. Reminds me of the Disney movie coco love the colors. Our waitress was prompt and quick with taking out order and drinks. Had a delicious corona and the chips and salsa were perfect starter that they served for free. I ordered a small order of queso for the chips just my personal preference. I had the La Tonalteca Steak which was a ribeye, medium rare as it always should be. The cooked it just right and the onions on top were perfect. Came with rice and beans and tortillas. We also had pollo ranchero. Everything was seasoned perfectly and served very quickly. Everyone working was so friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend. Hot take... I'd rather eat here than chipotle. If you're in Milford DE. This is the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Steak tacos were 3 shells buried under a pile of steak. If I wanted to make my own tacos I would have stayed home. The waitress only came back one time and gave me the check. I would have assumed if she seen my entire plate wasn't touched she would ask if the food was OK, but no nothing. Taco bell puts this place to shame. These people should be ashamed. They represent the Mexican culture in the worst way. This place is a little dark inside with bright vibrant furniture. We came at an off time just to grab a quick bite in our journey. The tortilla soup was flavorful with a bit of a spicy kick to it. The chile relleno was very cheesy with very similar cheeses both inside the chile and out which did not give it much body or flavor. The cheese cake was rich and creamy. The flan had a nice texture to it with a hare too much cinnamon involved in the syrup. Worth a try if trying to go local. read more

For me, this is the best Mexican food in Milford. The ambiance inside can sometimes feel a little cartoonish, but it definitely fits the mold. I've had the Taco salad, enchiladas, and chicken breast with quest, chorizo, and pineapple. They all were well prepared and tasted great - with what I would consider generous proportions. We didn't even get to eat here today. We used to live here in Milford and were traveling through town and wanted to stop and eat. It's one of the few places are kids have always enjoyed that's not fast food. Well ... it looked closed so I got out of the car and went to check. Both main doors were unlocked (11:52 am) so that would mean they are open. No hours posted on the doors. So I went back to the car and got everyone to go in and have lunch. We walked in and not greeted at first. They then proceeded to tell us after we were acknowledged that they didn't open for another several minutes. Seriously?? Yours doors are unlocked, and you are standing there not doing anything. Just go ahead and seat us a few minutes early. We had to go to the restroom anyway. It would have been noon by the time we wanted to even think about ordering anything. And opening at noon on a Sunday ... that's wild. Plenty of people working there today. Could have been open. And lost a party of six that went and spent $85 somewhere else. And there was definitely lots of crying from the kids when we left too. Luckily we were able to drive to another La Tonelteca and eat there. And it was good ... but not as good as you used to be. We ate at this restaurant for the first time while on vacation in May, since it was near our hotel.I must say the ambience was very colorful and pleasant. However, the food was simply baffling. I ordered the chicken enchilada plate. My wife ordered the 3 enchilada meal that contained one bean, one cheese and one chicken enchilada. We also ordered a quesadilla for an appetizer. We were very surprised when the plates came as we could not even see the enchiladas as they were covered with chopped lettuce and were tubes that were about 1 inch in diameter. The tubes I had just had chicken in them, no cheese or anything else. My wife's bean tube was filled with refried beans (no black beans and rice). The quesadilla was filled with chicken and nothing else and had an open top and bottom separated by the chicken. We had high hopes entering La Tonalteca for the first time. Don't judge this strip mall restaurant by its nothing-special, unassuming exterior (see my pictures) because the riotously colorful, attention-to-detail interior is beautiful. The chairs and tables are all made in Jalisco; carvings of traditional scenes of Mexico and painted in a rainbow of colors and animal, jungle, religious, farming designs and more, even down to the tabletops and legs. I couldn't stop gazing at them all. Even the bathroom has ceramic sunflower-painted Talavera sinks. Mexican "muzak" entertains you while you enjoy crunchy, warm and not-too-salty nacho chips dunked into a thick salsa with just the right amount of heat, The large (too large?) menu has affordable prices (eg, filling lunch specials are $7.49), and good sized portions. So many Mexican restaurants serve dishes where everything tastes the same but here, the rice is well seasoned, each item has its own distinct flavor, the mole has a good punch of spice, there are lots and lots of pieces of chicken in your meal, and, lest I forget, the service is friendly, quick and COVID protocol is being followed by our server wearing a mask and standing a comfortable distance away from us. read more

Big Time Disappointment! The mark to me of a good restaurant is not necessarily its size, but the quality of its food and the generosity and helpfulness of its staff. Along that line, some of the finest dining experiences I've had throughout my life have been in small and big dining places along with some divey joints scattered throughout the world. Regrettably, La Tonalteca is not among these gems. Our waitress Blanca seemed to have a bad attitude at first and I couldn't get over it. Had I been by myself, I would have walked out and give it a shot another day. We came on Monday evening, April 30, 2018. Unfortunately, it wasn't one of those situations that I needed to talk to management about or leave feedback on a card (none was provided) nor did I have time to do that. I was with a group of friends who like this place. She wasn't very helpful at all. I said this was my first time here and I didn't know the rules or better the menu. That response was met with stone silence or crickets. My friends asked about "Happy Hour" and she did respond that that is on Tuesday only, so that was helpful. Star for that one!. Did she offer to explain the menu or what's on special to us or ask what we were interested in? No, she offered no help in that regard. Instead she just asked, " Are you ready to order, yet?" We responded no, and she came back in about 5 minutes with still lack of interest in helping us. I guess it boils down to this there was no welcoming attitude towards us by the waitress, Blanca. Her attitude felt like hurry up and order so I can move on to whatever else I need to do, but help this group. I would be remiss to not say, her attitude seemed to change when she served our food, but from my perspective the damage had been done and I thought I would just tip her 10% instead of my normal 20%. (Maybe she had a bad day or is a new staff member, but really, you had to be there to get a sense of how miserable I felt and since I am not a vindictive person, I still felt I needed to air this out on social media. I hope things improve for her) I will list the best attractions about this first. * I was blown away about the set up of this place. Stunning and beautiful décor, this made it look promising to me. Everything was so clean and neat in appearance. Pricing seems reasonable and portion sizes seem big enough. Place became really busy when we left. * Parking is available in this strip mall area. * Our food arrived in less time than what we expected as when we came in the place it wasn't too busy and it seemed appropriately staffed for the evening. * The tables were clean and they had an assortment of hot sauces at your table. My side order of burritos looked promising, but tasted like a paper machè thing filled with cheese. Red sauce was ok, but needed some added heat/spice for my taste. Why did I order this? Well, let me explain, I thought since the waitress made no mention of what is their special or make any recommendations whatsoever, I decided to order a side to sample their food. Here is the description of what I ordered. SIDE ORDERS Oder of burritos (two beef) $8.29 Nowhere does it say it is filled with ground beef. I am thinking it would be some sort of beef slices or chunks, but no it was some cheap ground beef that tasted like paper machè. I guess I should have asked what's in it. Visiting the La Tonalteca was certainly an experience to remember, but one that I never hope to repeat and would not wish upon anyone else. If the beautiful decor and the intriguing inside color tempt you, you would be better off bringing a camera to the restaurant than your appetite. Stopped at La Tonalteca on our way back home from Ocean City. It's convenient because it's right on the highway. Love the ambiance it feels very Mexican with all the decor. The nachos they serve before the food are good! Ordered some Shrimp with garlic and were delicious! The service was great. Food came quick and our server was very attentive to our needs. What I didn't like was their fried ice cream. The tortilla shell tasted old and you can tell they were corn flake bits in it, maybe honey drizzle, or sugar cinnamon powder will make it better. My wife and I both commented how good our meals were . And the best part was how reasonable the bill was . They say "authentic Mexican food". Authentic must mean they use Mexican food terms. First, where in the world does "authentic" Mexican food use taco shells like you get at Taco Bell? You have a choice of " soft or fried" chimichanga? Hello! A soft chimichanga is a burrito. Sheesh. Made the mistake of ordering this. A, you get basically flautas yes two flour rolled tacos). B, the beef is flavorless cubes of my guess round steak that was tough I think it was just grilled. The rice is so flavorless it is pale yellow. Might as well eat left over Chinese takeout rice. The guacamole is obviously a powder mix added to puréed avocados. The salsa has the consistency of Ketchup with a few onions and maybe a dash of Tabasco added. Little flavor and no heat. The rest of the menu is full of odd attempts at Mexican with obviously no knowledge of what the items are. Mole Ranchero thickened with flour instead of Masa, soft flautas, and sad drink concoctions. Somehow found my way in here from Ocean City, MD en route to good ol' NY NY (home), and I can honestly say that I was blown away by the quality of food here. I'm from Queens, the melting pot of the United States, and I've had my share of good Mexican, whether it's authentic from an old fashioned restaurant, franchise style a la On the Border, down-n-dirty off a food truck, or some good ol' Tex-Mex cooked up by a Chinese cook; needless to say, I've seen it all. So believe me when I say, I wasn't expecting much from carrajo-land Milford, DE (read: in the middle of nowhere). Much to my delight, the food was, in a word, "legitsauce". While I can't truly speak on authenticity seeing as how my trips to Mexico involve stays at Americanized all-inclusive resorts, I can tell you that the food here can go blow-for-blow with much of the Mexican I've pleasantly encountered 'round NYC. While I've personally never seen dishes so filled-to-the-brim with guac, sour cream & refried beans, it certainly gives you that feel-good food sorta vibe. This would be an excellent hangover recipe, provided I was within distance of Middle-of-Nowhere, Delaware, but I suppose I can daydream outside of this review. And speaking of hangovers, the margaritas which I had the pleasure of sampling (as I was DD back to NY) were flavorful, well-made, and fueled with tequila. Seriously, even in New York, they can learn a thing or two about their margaritas from this wonderful eatery. Though I obviously can't speak on behalf of the entire chain, if I were to judge La Tonalteca's quality solely based on this location, I'd say it's about time for the franchise to explore ideas on a much larger expansion than within the confines of Delaware. Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about - but I found the food to be just OK (A-OK) at this strip-mall Mex. (La Toltecta vs. Tonalteca? Same chain?) Why are there so many 5 stars for this? It is not "as good as it gets". Have you ever been to Mexico? Or CA or TX? Delaware MMexican just isn't that great - and my hubands beef fajitas (and the kiddo's cheese quesadilla) was overly salty. My camarones with mojo de ajo was good though - and they gave me alot (10) of shrimp. Kiddo enjoyed her refried beans and rice (picked at the quesadilla). I had the Pollo Amigo. It was extremely tasty and I would order the exact same thing again. It is a chicken breast with vegetables and cheese, served with rice and tortillas, as well as lettuce and guacamole. A big serving and very filling. One of the better Mexican restaurants I've been to. And it appeared clean. There was a crowd but service was very speedy. The owners have also obviously invested a good deal of time, money, and thought into the layout and decor. My co-worker had asked if what he ordered came with rice and they said yes but when it came out with beans instead, they immediately brought him a large portion of rice and made it right. Gaggle of 3 services were gathered around a cell phone, very involved with whatever was on the screen. 2 more groups came in, were seated. Servers brought chips to their table and asked about drink orders. In order for these groups to be seated, servers walked past our table 7 times. After 12 minutes we left. Of the 3 staff members we walked past on the way out, not one spoke or even seemed surprised. Save yourself the aggravation and go to Applebee's on the far side of the parking lot. The food did not seem to be provided by SYSCO, and some of the steaks really had some flavor and true heat. The salsa appeared to be made in house and was very tasty.
