I love eating here when I'm in the area! They have delicious drinks- I got the ice cream frozen margarita and it was creamy and strong. The wait staff are fast and knowable about the menu and really helpful and nice. It's a large restaurant great for groups. Tasty food, attentive service and warm atmosphere! I met some friends for lunch and cocktails. The margaritas were perfect and the Mexican coffee was beautiful and delicious. We started our lunch with tortillas and a queso sauce with a hint of spice. Orders for the table then included an avocado chicken soup, tortilla soup, garden salad and spinach quesadilla. All were devoured with satisfaction! I ordered take out for my husband and he was delighted! La Tonalteca is a solid choice for a quick lunch or dinner while outlet shopping. They get you in and out quickly, the food is decent and it's got cute decor, if a little close-quartered. My shrimp enchiladas were great, the shrimp had a wonderful spice and a grilled flavor, I'm glad I tried something different. The DBF always likes his chicken chimi, and our friends tore down their chicken nachos. Fried ice cream for dessert is a must! read more

Had a wonderful lunch today, and although it's been MANY years since we have visited, it was every bit as enjoyable as we remembered. We got a warm welcome to the clean and festive dining room, delicious food and lovely service. Guacamole was flavorful and the chips and salsa fresh and tasty. Hubby had fish tacos and I had the carnitas tacos...we were both very pleased with our choices, but wound up swapping sauces as he enjoys hot and spicy more than I do. Great "down home" gooey Mexican food. Plenty of families and locals enjoy the tasty stuff at very reasonable prices. Lunch specials, too. Both the Guacamole and frijoles are smooth and flavorful. The shrimp dishes are my favorites at dinner. A recent shrimp burrito hit the spot, stuffed with plenty of grilled veggies. Other half lives the beef burrito, very flavorful beef, a touch on the salty side. Nice margaritas. First of all you're at the beach and you're not quite sure if this Mexican restaurant is as good as the one(s) where you're from. Well neither was I, but what I can confidently tell you is that if you're from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona or California, the answer is no - this will not be as good. However if you're from some God-forsaken place that doesn't have any decent Latin eateries then this will be better. But if you're like me and are from a medium-to-large size city/metro area with a significant Latin American population (excluding the aforementioned border states, plus NYC and Chicago) you might find this restaurant standard/decent/average like I did. Is that a knock on this establishment? Certainly not. The service is friendly and competent, and I finished all my food without complaint. Places like this are staples in larger populated areas where you might not always have the time or inclination to go to the better, busier, more expensive restaurant. Again, is that a knock? No! I like places like this, where you suddenly get hungry and need to get'er done without fussing around. They're there right when and where you need them, and you don't have to over-think the menu, because you've been down this road before and everything is pretty reliable. PLS READ TO END! My previous review was almost opposite from this one; before it was friendly people, cool booths and chairs from Tonalá(near Guadalajara), cool art, full bar, reasonable prices. Last night, it was indifferent, not friendly but not unfriendly staff, short wait, and just ok food; the red(brown) enchilada sauce was not bursts mg with taste like last time, and the cheese in the enchilada platter's four different enchiladas seemed slightly skimpy. A pile of lettuce atop it all wasn't pretty- just a distraction. My dining partner had the same reaction with his meal. Please give them the benefit of the doubt anyway... . perhaps we came here on a terrible night for them. We've had many meals before here that we've loved. ________ EDIT. Quality metal patio chairs, not plastic. Sanitizer at the door- yay! Much friendlier waitstaff, too!!! (This puzzled me before; this is Delaware. EVERYBODY is friendly here! ). I ordered similar food from last time, so I could see if the food I got last time has improved. Food comes out fast- don't blink! The enchiladas were far better; the red sauce had a much improved taste. I asked for onion for my dish, and he forgot, or something. In the past, my wife and I have always enjoyed this restaurant. This past week, we were SO VERY DISAPPOINTED! Since I am gluten sensitive, my choices are limited. I ordered the shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas. I've had fajitas in many restaurants and made them myself. (Byw, gluten sensitive need to be careful,. Some restaurants use SOY SAUCE with wheat). Except for occasional mushrooms, I've never seen anything in them besides onions and sweet peppers. Whoever was cooking threw in either zucchini or cucumber (probably the former) and carrots. YECH! There was little onion. The very few shrimp reminded me of the cheap "medium" cooked frozen shrimp I buy at Aldi's for salads. For what I received, the dish was both awful AND grossly overpriced. My wife ordered her favorite taco salad with ground beef. The meat was horrendously salty. A very disappointing meal. We should've sent the food back immediately but we were hungry. The manager did listen to us and made excuses; but he gave $10 off. Compare with the meal I had the next day from the Hunan Restaurant carryout at 19287 Miller Rd! read more

Pollo Loco! I wish every Mexican restaurant had it. It's so good. We used to live here in Delaware and are back on vacation. Cheese dip and the chimichanga was great too. We have kids and they usually eat better. But the chicken nuggets were kind of weird and almost looked battered like you would batter fish. The temperature was a little cold. This was our first time eating here. We were here for dinner without a reservation. Our server David 13 seated us at the corner booth for four nearest to the bar area overlooking the chairs and tables. All chairs and tables were painted in traditional bright Mexican colors as you can see from my pics. I started with their salted rim jalapeno margarita, which had freshly sliced jalapenos. They were not so hot. We were not so hungry, therefore, David recommended their grilled chicken quesadilla, which was quite filling for me. Shredded chicken was also available as a smaller less filling appetizer. We had both or one of each type. Our total bill was only $43 less gratuities. David served our table well. read more

Terrible service, drinks, and way overpriced! Was forced to pay 33 some dollars for basically half shot of rumchata that was poured over ice for some reason, a mixed drink, and a small margarita?? Also my friend ordered a "trash can" mixed drink and was served a weak excuse for a Long Island. Mango margarita was mid at best. Our bartender, Diana, didn't know her lefts from rights and at first told us there was only happy hour on Wednesday and then it changed to Monday through Thursday but 3-5. Been here several times, and just like many restaurants in the area, the service is lacking. The food is good, and the "Fajitas for Two" can actually feed about 6! Best deal in town! A few frustrations: -Margarita's served in hot (right out of the dishwasher hot) glasses - had to ask for small plates for chips/salsa (table of six remember!) - had to ask for spoon (every time I've been there) to serve /spoon fajita meat into tortillas and spoon toppings on fajita - once food served, server no where to be found. Located in the Midway Shopping Center with the Candy Kitchen and Midway go kart/mini-golf/water park attraction, this unassuming exterior houses a full bar and fun furniture aesthetic. Good mexican food. You get large portions with reasonable prices. Was pleased with quality of our meals. All meat was cooked well. Our margaritas didn't taste strong so unsure how much alcohol was in them. The decor was very extravagant and it created a fun atmosphere. My quesadilla tasted pretty salty, it would have been nice to have diced tomatoes instead of 1/2 a slice of one.
