This place was our last resort on Christmas Eve. It was pretty empty but somehow the staff still seemed super busy. I order the bolognese and my friend got the salmon. The food was very good but the service was terrible despite how empty the place was. Once we got our food our waiter disappeared and we couldn't get drink refills or cheese on the pasta. After we finished eating we waited over 30 minutes trying to find our waiter who disappeared yet again. I hope they improve their attentiveness to customers. I understand waiting when the restaurant is packed but there was no one there on Christmas Eve! Also the prices on the receipt are around $5 more than the prices on the menu. read more

I came to La Tomate with friends to get an afternoon drink and snacks. I ordered a glass of white wine ($8), and it was fine. We ordered the Calamari ($14) and another appetizer around the same price. Neither were terribly memorable. Service was practically non existent. Average Italian fare. Went there for dinner on a weeknight, and it was virtually empty. Service was lackadaisical, and the food was good, but nothing extremely wonderful. Tagliatelle all Bolognese was a good pick, but a bit bland, I thought. The pork medallion, as described on the menu, sounded amazingly good. When it arriving, there was very little of the sauce, no carrots with paprika and gorgonzola sauce, and only a tiny fennel and apple salad that was undressed. Make sure you make a reservation; this place gets packed! We were seated by a darling host named Jackson, who was just about the nicest guy ever! And then we waited for our server as we watched him greet other tables. And then we waited for our server. We drank more water. And then we waited for our server. We decided on our drinks, apps, and dinner. Still. No. Server. We watched him wait on several tables this entire time. Not so much as a drink order. At this point, it was a one star review and a scathing email. Enter Jackson! The attentive host noticed our lack of glasses and closed menus and decided to take our entire order himself!! If you've never worked at a restaurant before, a lot of people subscribe to the "not my job" mentality. We met our server the first time when our apps and dinners came out at the same time. Not a pleasant guy. The food, however, was the best Italian dish I've had in the states. My ravioli were perfect. The red sauce was divine. My partner loved his octopus salad. The busser cleared our plates politely. She, again, we delightful. Jackson came in to save the day again to see if we needed drinks or desserts. We decided against it. Our actually server turned on the charm when he showed up again with the check, trying to get a better tip. I held a party last week at La Tomate for my staff and it was a lovely experience. The food was wonderful--the sea scallops and the lamb chops were a few of our favorites--however even better than that was the kind, attentive service and the view out onto Connecticut Avenue. I have taken two guests to this restaurant, each for a separate special occasion. Both times were for brunch, and both times both I and my guest were thoroughly impressed. This is a local restaurant with genuine Italian fare. The service, interior, and presentation are all classy. Based on other reviews, I hesitated to try the first time. However, a different local business owner recommended this place based on its authenticity, so I asked the waiters for recommendations based on the chef's specialities. Every part of every dish (even the bread and pasta) were made in house, and the ingredients were fresh. My suggestion; if you're looking for a great brunch spot to impress, for ~$15/20 a plate, and are open to a chef's recommendations, you'll definitely enjoy. If you come with pre-conceived expectations of what you think Italian fare should be, you should switch to an Olive Garden like establishment instead. We went on a Friday night and it was pretty empty but the outside courtyard was perfect for some al fresco dining. We really appreciated all of the fans they had outside. Let's start with the bread. We were pretty disappointed. We were hoping for some fresh crusty bread but what we got seemed stale and old. It didn't seem like this place baked its bread fresh so that was a bummer. For entres, my friend ordered a trofie dish with shrimp and I got the ravioli. My friend found her dish to be underwhelming. She thought the sauce was thin and flavorless and she was expecting a bit more based on the menu. My ravioli was pretty good. I thought it was a bit overpriced for what it was. The outdoor seating is kind of random- antique store meets Italian but it's quirky. Our main issue was with the customer service. The host wasn't warm and friendly and seemed to think that we were an annoyance. Taking her away from whatever thing she was doing during the moment. We were surprised because we were the only customers and we're In a pandemic. Wouldn't you want our business? We almost left but we're starving, so we held our tongues and stayed. While there was a bit of miscommunication with our server we ended up really liking everything we had through the lunch promo. We had a delicious spinach and ricotta filled ravioli and a very nice caccio e pepe made with delicious house made pasta. It's the perfect portion for the start but it's quite pricey. For the pasta, the taste is impressive. It's not like those italian pasta taste that you can get from common restaurants. The pasta is well cooked. Those shrimps doesnt taste like frozen which is great. Since I love breakfast so much, I was enticed by their new road sign that advertised new breakfast options. I went in and ordered the $5 breakfast sandwich being advertised. It was made of a croissant stuffed with scrambled eggs, pancetta and salsa rosa. This special also included a cup of coffee. Such a gem of a spot that has been in DC since the 80s. I went for the first time and I'm kicking myself it took me so long to visit. We just got back from Italy about two months ago and this took us right back there. They ambiance felt exactly like Italy, tiny cozy tables, decorated likely by the proprietors and not some big design firm, so it is beautiful without feeling overdone. Raw pasta and funky vases and candles are the centerpieces. Wine bottles decorate the rest of the restaurant. It felt sincere if that makes sense. The food was fantastic. We chatted with the owner and let her pick what we would eat with the exception we knew we wanted the Burrata and the Cacio e Pepe. Calamari: 5/5 surprised us that it wasn't the typical fried calamari, it was somewhat like a stew. Served in a hot creamy broth with tomato and kalamata olives. Topped with a few fried ones. Smoked Salmon: 5/5 and another surprising creation. Served with grapefruit and shallot. The flavors paired great and I think I now prefer salmon with such strong zingy accompaniments. It was a wonderful divergence from the standard smoked salmon dish. Burrata: 4/5 although I enjoyed it immensely I only rate it this way as an FYI for others. The Burrata itself was not as creamy as you may have gotten elsewhere. The owner warned us about this but we insisted - we love Burrata. It's served with a GENEROUS helping of tomato and pesto. We were not disappointed! PASTA Ravioli: 5/5 hot damn this was amazing. Ricotta and Swiss chard and the most velvety brown butter sauce. I need more of it. Cacio e pepe: classic. 5/5 Delicious. Super cheesy. The waiter would not add Parmesan garnish like the other dishes until we tried it. My partner said it was too salty for him but it was just right for me. Bolognese: 4/5 classic, as expected. read more

This place only adds truth to the adage that Washington DC has no good mid-price restaurants. Seriously, how does such an average Italian restaurant survive in a city of power lunches and business dinners? If a good location and a white tablecloth is all you need to get by in DC, I guess you can go to La Tomate, but if you expect some flavor in your dinner, don't go here. Don't let the the prosciutto bar at the entrance give you a false sense of hope. That is where the goodness unfortunately ends. After a little taste test of all the dishes my co-workers ordered, these are my conclusions. The decent: - The prosciutto and other cold cuts on the mixes antipasti platter was good, not out of this world, but presentable. - The farfalle with prosciutto and mushrooms was the only edible pasta dish at the table. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the sauce was not too creamy with a good balance of mushrooms and meat. - Service was attentive and friendly. The terrible: - The gnocchi were mushy and swam in a tasteless tomato sauce. - The cesar salad was overdressed. - The ravioli was overcooked and the filling needed seasoning. - AND...the worst of all was my dish, the seafood risotto. Please do not open a can of Campbell's tomato soup, mix it with some rice and call it risotto. Please don't. I had to eat around the rice and grab out the fish and shrimp that had survived this hot mess. Save yourself some cash and roll further down the street for a different (although likely average) DC establishment. Really Washington, you can demand better food than this. read more
