Taco Tuesday! No direct specials, but no complaints. We ordered the tableside guacamole (amazing) and all had tacos and quesadillas. Beans are optional, but everything was so good. We went through several baskets of chips, not full baskets, but just enough to be completely full after eating our entrees. The salsa isn't spicy, so we added lots of hot sauce. I had the best time at La Tolteca yesterday. We met up with friends for cocktails and satisfying snacks, and a Portugal game just happened to be on the TV, so I felt like the Universe smiled on me there. I've been a fan of the Portuguese national team for at least a decade. How is it that Cristiano Ronaldo never ages? Our waiter was amazing, just the perfect level of flirtatious and efficient. The dining room is small and filled up around us, but I never felt like I was being rushed so they could turn over the table. There was quite a wait by the time we left. I feel kinda bad that those people didn't arrive a tad bit earlier to take advantage of the Happy Hour specials. Jeremy and I had blended margaritas (half price!) - raspberry for him, peach for me. Sometimes when I taste another person's choice, I lament that I chose poorly, but this time around I made the right choice. Jeremy, who has a great story about getting sick from drinking too much peach tea in his youth, also thinks that he made the right choice. I love when that happens. And then we shared a chicken quesadilla and chorizo/chicken nachos (no lettuce). Both excellent. But I gotta say that the REAL hit at the table was the white sauce brought for dipping the corn chips. What is that!? It's probably salsa blanco, concocted for the white diners and I am so okay with that. The salsa is also great; I added that to our nachos. Our friends seemed pleased with their selections as well. I was so glad when one ordered the Cal Ripken burrito because... I was born in the 70s. I remember when Cal Ripken Jr was hot sh!t. My grandfather worked at the stadiums, and met CRJ several times and was not impressed. So I can't help but laugh in my soul about CRJ because I respected my grandfather WAY more and always will. I miss that old man so much sometimes, and I'm glad Cal is out there being honored with things such as his own burrito so I can chuckle to myself about how my grandfather would have had a fit. We cleared our plates, and were still allowed to lollygag, which I appreciate. I would so recommend this place. read more

Food was ok. Birria tacos were bland, little to no onions on top. My pollo con arroz didn't seem to have cheese on it. Husbands chorizo pollo didn't come with the tortillas it was supposed to. We added an extra side of cheese and a fountain drink.... Over $8 for a 4 oz cup of chunky cheese and a cup mostly full of ice. Just about $60 for these five items. Not worth it whatsoever. They were very attentive to our needs and exuded a great deal of charisma. We were greeted with warm smiles upon our arrival and the friendly demeanor persisted throughout our visit. Although at one point I did not see our waitress for an extended period of time and was unable to get a refill on my water, this was a minor issue in an otherwise excellent experience. Wait time - Upon our arrival at the restaurant around 2:30 pm for a late Sunday lunch, we were promptly seated as the establishment was not particularly busy. The staff quickly took our drink orders and appetizers, and we were pleased with the prompt service. Our entrees arrived at our table in a timely manner, approximately 10 minutes after our initial order, and were served piping hot. Cleanliness & Atmosphere - The interior and exterior were both impeccably clean and accommodating. The chairs were sturdy and armless, which was particularly helpful for larger individuals such as myself. The background music and hockey games on the TV added to the ambiance without creating an overly loud environment. We were able to converse at a normal volume without any issue. Food quality - I ordered the Steak Street Tacos for myself while my son opted for the Shrimp Fajitas. The portion size of the latter was particularly generous, providing enough leftovers for a second meal. Both dishes were delicious and well-priced. While I personally enjoyed the Street Tacos, I still preferred my usual order of Steak Fajitas. Verdict - Recommend With a score of 22.5 out of 25, I give this establishment an A- This family-oriented restaurant offers an excellent selection of reasonably priced dishes, making it a great choice for any occasion. We came in with a large party and they accommodated us right away. The place is clean and lively. We started off with margaritas. They were great. Then I shared salsa, queso, street tacos with chicken, fajitas.. everything was delicious. Tacos were a bit bland but I added salsa verde to enhance the taste. We also got table side guacamole. I highly recommend that. They make you fresh guac at your table. Service was amazing, and super prompt considering we were a large party. Our servers never rushed us, and were very patiently taking our orders. So special shout-out for them. I recommend this place if you're in the mood of some good and tasty Mexican food . read more

I live in Baltimore city and I will happily drive 45 minutes to come to this place to eat. Decor is very cool and true to their roots. When I came in I tried the street tacos, with three different meats (birria, carne asada, and chicken). We are in town visiting family and happened upon this restaurant. We travel all over the country and this is by far the best Mexican restaurant we have had the pleasure of dining at. I stopped for lunch because I was craving enchiladas and this place was close with good reviews. It was a little busy for lunch rush but I was immediately seated inside. They also have a tent set up for outside seating. The waiter was quick and friendly. I ordered the three enchiladas lunch special which came with a bean, beef and chicken enchilada. All were were excellent! Authentic with an excellent flavor. I also had a gold Margherita which was equally tasty. Overall, the place was clean with great service and excellent food. When you bring up authentic Mexican it really does suggest a range of what is considered good. If it's not Tex Mex, Mexican places are either authentic (meaning you'll find stuff like Tortas or tacos with grilled meat, onions and cilantro on the menu) or Americanized (where the dishes are usually smothered in red sauce and cheese.) La Tolteca leans towards Americanized, but the options are bland, the salsa is just plain bad and their idea of what Molé is is atrocious. The staff are nice and the ambience is good, but the food is forgettable. read more

Came by at dinner time on a Sunday night. Very busy, no line. Got a table for two right away. I love the complimentary chips and salsa; the white sauce is my favorite, but the red salsa is good, too. I was a little disappointed when I ordered a glass of red sangria. It was the tiniest, serving - no ice, and I basically drank it in about two or three sips. I ordered a chicken taco salad which was very good; it was served with a tomato wedge, shredded lettuce and sour cream. I would like to have had shredded cheese, too. Overall, good place. So let's see. I decided to visit after a friend talked so highly of his experience at the Bel Air location. I love Mexican so I was anxious to try a new place. Being right down the street made it even better. We started with the guacamole and crab quesadillas. So I'll say that I can be very very picky. The guacamole was ok... but mine is better :-) . It just lacked a bit of seasoning. I'm gonna take it home and hook it up. The crab quesadillas were very greasy and a little less than average. For entree I ordered the combo which consisted of a taco, enchilada and chalupa. All chicken. I thought it was all a bit less than good. The chicken lacked seasoning. I'll say that it was my fault for expecting a chalupa to be the kind you get from Taco Bell.. it wasn't. It's like a tostada covered in refried beans and guacamole.. My guest was so displeased with how her food looked that she didn't even try hers and sent it back for chicken tenders and fries. My daughter didn't care for her food but she picked at it.. I wound up just ordering her chicken tenders and fries as well. And so I get it. This is not Taco Bell or don pablos. It's authentic Mexican. Probably not the place for my little ones . I have had the taco salad #125 with ground beef & chorizo (extra), and the Gordo's burrito #141, and both were very fresh, flavorful & enough for two meals. I love the Cockeysville location, so when we were in Bel Air and looking for lunch for the family, BAM! The original La Tolteca appeared and we just had to go! Fantastic service at this restaurant - the waiter laughed and joked with us and was over all very friendly. There is a person who brings a cart to your table (at your request) and makes you fresh guacamole, letting you choose which ingredients you want... When she's finished, she'll let you taste-test it to see if you want any more of a certain thing. It's fantastic and runs about $3.50, which is worth it (it's also a GIGANTIC bowl - she uses two whole avocados). When we were there, they had a special item - Hawaiian fajitas. Holy crap! At $16.99, I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into, but it was worth it... I ate as much as I could there and still have a whole other meal's worth of chicken in a carryout box. Great stuff! They chop a pineapple in half, then shove it full of pineapple pieces, your choice of meat, and all of the normal things fried with the meat in a fajita (peppers, onions, some tomato chunks).
