It's time to finally speak my love for La Soupe, the roadside shop on Round Bottom Road dishing out the best soups this side of Cincinnati. It's part nonprofit, part take-out restaurant (technically, they have tables outside so you can eat there in warmer weather, but I usually get mine to go). On any given day, they'll have a selection of 5+ different soups to choose from. My absolute favorite is the sweet potato and chorizo. It's filling, flavorful and just the perfect amount of spicy. I almost always get soup, but the last time I went they didn't have my favorite so I opted for the croque monsieur sandwich instead. It took a little while because they had to heat it up in the oven, but I wasn't in a rush and I got to try a little cup of their apple-pecan slaw while I waited. Yum! When I got back to the office and unboxed my sandwich, I was shocked. It was enormous! What looked like two halves of a really large sandwich were essentially TWO sandwiches served together. The flavors were great--not too much ham or cheese or sauce, but certainly enough of each component. Really, really good, but there's no way I could have eaten the whole thing, not to mention the chips that came with it. I couldn't believe it was only $7. So next time you're passing by, make a stop at this unassuming little soup shack. Support a local business while enjoying some hearty and delicious food. read more

I had La Soupe because they were at a Farmer's Market that came to my office. I was extremely impressed by their fresh ingredients, unique food, and the fact that they take a portion of their profits and use it to feed needy children, much like what Tom's does for shoes. So, basically, you get a delicious lunch, AND you get to make sure a kid is getting a healthy meal. This place is a win-win! I ordered the kale caesar salad, and it was extremely filling for $7! The salad was very large, with fresh kale, a homemade dressing, perfectly cooked chicken, and fresh shaved parmesan on top. The croutons tasted homemade as well. The dressing was a little heavy-handed in my opinion, but that could be easily fixed by serving the dressing on the side. I can't wait to check out La Soupe's brick and mortar location! I first found out about this place and thought it was everything I would love in a restaraunt - locally owned, locally sourced fresh ingredients, prepared by a knowledgable owner, that donates to the needy as well. What an awesome idea. Unfortunately, the actual food is less than the sum of the parts. My whole family and I decided to try this place, and created a huge takeout order. Essentially a sandwich and shepherds pie and one of every type of soup, That size an order wasn't an issue, and the estimate on time was great (and spot on as well). Quick run down: The good - the croque monsiuer was well received. I don't eat ham, but every one else had a slice and enjoyed it. The shepherds pie, while greasy and small for the cost, was a very tasty option. The yellow lentil soup and buffalo style chili had excellent flavors and depth, would really be great on a cold winter/fall day. The bad - literally everything else. The other soups were all bland and uninspiring. The salads were over-dressed and underwhelming with flavors. Chicken noodle should be pretty easy, right? This is a soup place, chicken noodle is a classic. Somehow it wasn't. Neither were the minestrone, chowders (potato and sausage both), kale, or chicken tortilla soups. All in all, for the cost, drive, and time slot, I wouldn't go back. They do some things very well, and again I'd love to have that chilli on a cold day, but for a place called La Soupe, the soups were overpriced underwhelming. I might have to try them again in the spring or summer, as their menu does seem to rotate (aside from some classic staples), because I really do want to like them, I just can't right now. read more

Ok, folks...yes, the food fare is made ON the premises!! It is not the least bit "plasticized" as I call it...i.e., pre-made offsite with all kinds of preservatives, additives, gums, etc. You get the idea. Much of the food is prepared using local farmers' ingredients. The chalkboard menu *changes frequently and has tasty items: today I had a beef (from local farmer) and vegetable soup, caesar salad w/ croutons (made in the kitchen there), bread on the side. It was all very good!! *On my previous visit, I had a squash soup. It has been fun going into this cozy place to see what is on the menu that day. They serve both meatless, and meat-based items. There is indoor seating; and outside picnic tables w/ covered awning. Order at the counter inside. I think (?) you can bring your own wine or beer. Call to ask, however. The café/restaurant sits off the road just a bit, so do watch for it as you drive on Round Bottom Rd. (just outside of Newtown). Staff is engaging and helpful! read more

My friend & I went to the Madeira location today for lunch, our first time there. The ladies working there were very nice & helpful. We got to sample a few soups of our choice before we ordered. We both decided to get the potato soup, yum. The place is very clean, lots of natural light, and well decorated. We decided to come back sometime with our women's group for lunch. The outside seating looked very nice and would be a great choice on a nice day. I had donated some of our garden produce last fall to be used in soups, and now my friend is going to do the same this summer. Anyone can do this to benefit the goal of feeding the local people who don't have enough to eat. read more

OMG My friend told me to go here. Yesterday, we went to get some soup for later. She got like 3 or 4 pints, her mother got about 3 or 4 pints, and I got only 1. Like I never had it before. Now I wish I'd also gotten 3 or 4 pints. I really want to use the eff word to tell you how good this soup is. Listen. La Soupe is an amazing place. I love to bring up my past when it's convenient and this is a good time. When I was little, we were poor. We went hungry. Like I remember crying from being hungry. I remember my brothers crying from being hungry. Maybe my mom cried from being hungry, too, but not in front of us. We had some rough years and even though it's more than 30 years later, I remember how horrible it was. I remember the boxes of free food we got from charities, I remember the free lunches we got at school when we poor enough, and I remember the groceries that would show up on our doorstep from strangers. Like it's a weird thing how we were also supposed to be ashamed of it, too. How once I said I was starving and my mom put her hand over my mouth to shut me up. How I used to bring a bag of apples to school for lunch when it was all we had and I pretended to like it. Like I'm starting to cry right now thinking of it and it's not even PMS. It's an awful thing that people go hungry in such a rich country. It's AWFUL. It's UNFORGIVABLE and every person who lets it happen is guilty. I'm right about this and if you don't agree, you're a black-hearted and ugly, ugly person. Well, whatever. La Soupe feeds hungry people. Like that's what they do. And they sell soup to people to help them do it. So regardless of how the soup is, I love this place. They're stopping other people from having those awful memories that I have. But listen, at La Soupe, they don't give those nasty cans of cranberry sauce or yams. They make effing delicious soup. Like it's actually the best soup I've ever had that's as good as soup I make at home. UGH. I lied. It's better than the soup I make at home. It's really effing good. I got the vegetarian lentil soup yesterday and it was amazing. They have vegan soups most of the time and told me to call ahead to see what they have. Like I talked to the chef and asked 100 questions about the ingredients and everything. He was very kind and I didn't feel like a pain in the ass. Like sorry, but if you have any food allergies, then you know how much it sucks to have to ask these questions. Usually, I have to ask a waiter who has to ask the chef, and I don't even get to hear the answer. That makes me nervous because I don't want my face to swell up. I really appreciate that I could ask about all this stuff. But also, the vegan soups they do sounded very hearty. Like they put pistachios in some of the soups and I can't wait to try that. Let me first start by saying that I LOVE soup. I can eat soup all day, everyday, 7 days a week...I think you get the point. I found this place a few days ago and stopped in. I also just want to note that I just came back from Europe 6 days ago. I had REALLY amazing food while I was in Europe, and am on a food high that I don't want to get down from yet. This place did not disappoint, I tried the Beef Bourguignon, Potato Chowder, and Natalia's Minestrone. They were all damn good! We go to the Roundbottom Road location. We love the soups, the sandwiches (only a couple of those are available but they are great) and the wonderful s'mores brownie type bar for dessert. The staff is very friendly and, if you want to eat in, you will share a long picnic table (a few stools are also available) with friendly people. Most importantly, we love the mission of La Soupe; feeding the hungry, using things that would otherwise go into the garbage, and partnering with local stores and farms for support. Jungle Jim's just joined Krogers, Turner Farms and others in donating and helping. During the recent very cold spell they closed early so they could take gallons of soup to the Drop Inn Center which was full to overflowing and needing to feed many people. Mostly the menu is created for takeout so it is possible to have a delicious and healthy soup and salad dinner without doing it yourself. Great for those in Anderson Township and east (if you are visiting the Roundbottom location) to pick up a great dinner. read more

This is a cute, friendly, very casual lunch spot in the former train station in downtown Madeira that has a small number of unusual soups, salads, and sandwiches. Orders are given at the counter and the cheerful cook brings it to the table, so no tipping needed. They were out of my first two choices (a salad and a soup), even though we arrived a few minutes after opening. A little surprised that the food was served in disposable paper products with plastic utensils, but it came shortly after ordering which was nice. We both had the chicken curry salad served on a bed of spinach leaves that was huge and well balanced with curry on the mild side and a blend of small crunchy veggies. The portabello mushroom soup was delicious, but the cauliflower soup was on the bland side and also lacked salt --- although that's better than over salting for those on sodium restriction and easily remedied with the salt shaker. Next time, I'll ask for a sample of soup first. Overall, when in the Madeira area and wanting a quick, good value, fresh and tasty lunch, I'd surely return to La Soupe. read more

This soup was AMAZING! We have had the potato chowder and returned again for the Wisconsin beer soup. The sandwiches are delicious. The s'more bars are to die for. Not only are the ingredients fresh, but the staff is friendly and so happy to be there! We had lunch brought in from La Soupe at work. I ordered the triple salad (which was a sampling of three of their salads and the pumpkin soup. Everything was fresh and deeeliscious. We also got some of the deserts to share. The Cranberry lemon bar and the Reece's bar was so good. I would definitely recommend this place for a girls lunch out or take home for dinner. read more

I stopped in on my way home from Newtown Market. It smelled wonderful the minuet I walked in. Very friendly staff. And the food was very good. I will be going back.
