It was a table hit. - Scallops are new to the menu and they were fire! They were also huge (which is rare). We loved the deep red pepper sauce that came with it. - Gnocchi were fluffy and just melted in your mouth - Filet...delicious! Must get beef here. - Dover was prepared table side, but it was dark for him to see so we had to help give him light (we didn't want the bones in our dish). I would give this place zero stars if I could. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Chicago. Our server, Robert Q, made multiple mistakes with orders from the start. I clearly asked for a salad as an appetizer and the half chicken as my entrée. Instead, he entered two salads--one of them with chicken. I'm not sure why anyone would order the same salad for an app and their entree. To make matters worse, the extra salad was never removed from the bill, even though no one ordered or ate it. He also made several mistakes for the other orders at the table. My chicken entrée didn't arrive until the rest of my table had already finished eating. When it came time to pay, things only got worse. The restaurant uses a QR code system, but it didn't work. When I asked for a printed bill so I could just pay with my card, I was told they couldn't do that and the server didn't know how. That's simply unacceptable. Overall, the experience was chaotic and poorly managed. The food itself was fine, but for the price and portion sizes, I expect much better service. I won't be returning. The food was excellent! We had the tuna crudo, fritters, crab croquette, sea bass, trufffle gnocchi, and cauliflower gratin. Everything was truly amazing except the cauliflower gratin. I found it to be bland. The server was a bit icy. She was very knowledgeable and helpful about the menu, but before we had ordered appetizers I was asking a few questions and she rushed me off saying she would be back to take our order. (Ummm fine but I wanted to ask the questions before we decided???) The biggest service faux pas and why we gave 3 stars is that she knew it was my birthday and when I asked her to take a photo of my husband and I she said "give me a moment" and never came back! When she did finally come back with our check (which was very slow) she never acknowledged the request for a photo. A full 20 minutes had passed. I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday dinner here and it was great! It's so pretty inside and it's the perfect spot for a date night or a special occasion. Our waiter was great and answered a bunch of questions that we had. The drinks were all great, they also have a truffle old fashioned which I'm curious to try! I sat outside the restaurant for 10 min in my car and no valet was around so I had to call the restaurant. The manager actually came outside to look for the valet and it ended up that the valet was sitting in his car at the end of the street while customers needing service are double parked outside. When I left, it was clearly under 3 hours but he told me it was more than 3 hours which doubled my fee. La Serre is undeniably a pleasant attractive space. Their smoked old-fashioned is a work of art, but unreasonably high priced for such a tiny drink, about a half inch deep around a giant ice cube. The steak tartare was super-disappointing - a wee bit of meat mixed in with a sawdust-like substance - barely 2 or 3 tablespoons in all; I would suggest quadrupling the size of this course and leaving the egg yolk unbroken on top. Everyone enjoyed the mussels but we ended up with too much broth and it had a tomato-y tilt to it which we were not sure about. The French onion fondue was basically a French onion soup with no soup; don't waste stomach space on it. The little gem salad was good, but c'mon - $19? The bacon fusilli with toasted bread crumbs sounded interesting but was not exceptional. The French fries were perfectly made, though the aioli, like their bearnaise, was strangely shiny. My wife really enjoyed the salmon special. The flat iron steaks were perfectly cooked and good texture. Wines by the bottle were overpriced. The bread service with butter and tapenade was too small but they did bring us a second when asked. Our server Matt was attentive and professional. The noise level/music was a little too loud and distracting. We kicked things off with fresh oysters and the unforgettable French onion Gruyère dip -- rich, cheesy, and absolutely addictive. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, easily one of the best we've had. A terrible experience. 7:15pm reservation on a Sunday night and the table was ready at 8:10pm-photo for proof. There is nowhere to sit and wait. There is no elevator to go up 3 flights of stairs in heels. They didn't check in with us one time to let us know any progress or say "sorry it's taking so long". If you actually want to eat, make a different reservation. When they called me to tell me my table was ready and I explained how upset I was that I left, the response was "oh ok". All the stars! For starters, the space is so so beautiful. Greenery and flowers galore, and just a beautiful aesthetic and ambiance. Very photo-op worthy. The service was phenomenal, with seemingly multiple people waiting on us and all our questions and needs addressed right away. The food and drinks are also so so good. Luckily I came here with a group of friends that like to eat so we tried a LOT of stuff. For drinks I had the herbe de triumph which was one of the best drinks I've ever had. You could smell and taste the herbs, but it wasn't overpowering and paired so well with the drink. I definitely recommend this! For food...it feels like we tried everything on the menu. I had the crab croquette and truffle tater tot amuse. Both were 10/10. We share the eggplant fritters (7/10), scallops (10/10), chicken (10/10), little gem salad (10/10), gnocchi (10/10), linguine with clams (12/10), and cauliflower gratin (7/10). A very anticipated experience at La Serre. Another restaurant in Fulton with the most incredible interior. I went on a Friday evening with a girlfriend and it was very crowded which was expected; however, it was so loud, we had to basically yell in order to hear each other. Pretty sure couples around us had to sit next to each other in a small booth just so they could hear better. Probably wouldn't recommend this place for a first date where you're trying to get to know a person. For appetizers, we shared the truffle tator tot and the french onion fondue. The tator tot had a generous amount of black truffle shavings which was incredible flavor.. though I don't think it was anything out of the ordinary for the crazy price point. The fondue was amazing with such great flavor and I do want to point out the sourdough bread here is one of the best breads I've ever had. There was a compliment loaf of sourdough bread with the creamiest butter and olive tapenade. The fondue and the bread was the highlight of our meal. Unfortunately, our two mains of bacon radditore and pesto gnocchi fell short. The radditore was so salty and legitimately hard to eat. I think this would have tasted way better without the bacon or the bacon should be cooked separately and topped on top. It was a shame because the pasta was cooked perfectly with great texture. As for the gnocchi, quite the opposite, great flavor but terrible texture. The gnocchi was so overcooked, it melted like cotton candy once it was in my mouth. I do want to say it was so sweet to give us a complimentary dessert of our choice for my birthday celebration. The hazelnut crepes, unfortunately, also fell short for us. There were just way too many hazelnuts and the strange cookie crispy burnt filling really threw us off. The crepe batter itself was too hard. Overall, the ambiance and service of La Serre was just as expected but the food honestly fell short. read more

Tuesday snowy evening and it was completely packed, We did not know it was restaurant week and were pleasantly surprised at the offerings on their menu, which read like a greatest hits of their regular menu. My companions and I all enjoyed our dishes - which were hearty full sized portions (vs tasting portions that can come with restaurant week menus.) However, they did bring out new plates with each course. Everything was delicious. We had the tuna crudo and French onion fondue starters, which were both fantastic. We ordered the linguine and clams, crispy bacon radiatore, and the caviar nest. All dishes were delicious and well-seasoned. The lighting, music, and decor are elevated but still warm -- it feels elegant without trying too hard. Our server was thoughtful and professional, and the pacing of the meal was spot-on. Every dish we ordered came out perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and packed with flavor. The second visit was just as impressive. We brought friends, and they were just as blown away. The place is certainly Instagramable and there were gaggles of female tables on our Friday evening dinner pouting and photographing. To me this was a distraction to an otherwise lovely place. Was super excited to try this place before it officially opened! Finally tried it out last week with some friends and BOY OH BOY. It was everything I wanted it to be. Ambiance: Located right beside Bar La Rue, the floral decor makes the restaurant an instagrammable place, perfect for bringing your friends and family to a dinner in a beautiful setting. Would be a lovely place to go to for Mother's Day or to have a girls night. I rate ambiance and decor 10/10. Food: As for the food, the menu has just enough variety and focuses more on quality over quantity which is something I respect more. For my appetizer, I tried the Crab Croquette (fresh, lemony, a perfect single bite) and Tuna Crudo (one of the best I've EVER had). For my entree, I had the Classique Caviar Nest (yummy caviar and a perfectly crafted lemony, creamy sauce made you not want to put the fork down). My friends ordered the half roasted chicken and gnocchi and we split the mashed potatoes as a side. Both do their dishes were very tasty and I particularly loved the sauce used for the chicken- it really is divine and so flavorful. For dessert, we split the Bruleed French Toast which came with cinnamon brown sugar ice cream. Oh. My. Goodness. This was literally one of the best desserts I have ever had and that says something as I'm a well known foodie. Overall, each thing I ate was delicious and I will be back to try the Dover Sole and the Duck Chinoise. I believe the pricing was reasonable for the quality of food. I rate the food 9.8/10! Service: Our waitress was phenomenal. She explained the menu and answered our questions with ease. When asked what she recommended, it turned out to be everything I planned on ordering anyways. She also helped me pair a refreshing white wine with my meal and was overall very friendly and accommodating. Yes across the board! Came with another couple for a birthday dinner and we loved every moment of this meal (well maybe not the part when we had to pay, but honestly this meal was worth the $). The decor, buzzy atmosphere, perfect lighting, tables (spacious!!!), beyond friendly and professional waitstaff and bussers, and of course the food (so so much of it) all made for a great evening. And trust me you can't say no to all of the delicious bread, don't even try it. Just eat it and be happy it graced you with its crusty (in a good way) presence. The order: -Crab Croquette x4: these come as a single bite, very creamy and fresh tasting. I'm not a huge crab fan but these were delightful and if you love crab, don't miss out. -Roasted Escargot: I love a traditional garlic garlic garlic butter escargot and this one while still very good was lighter and felt more herb-y. That didn't stop me from dipping that crusty bread (see above) to soak up the butter goodness. Honestly, if I'm craving rich garlic escargot I'd probably skip here. -Steamed Muscles: deceivingly small dish but the muscles just kept on coming. Flavorful broth, still white wine but with tomato that gave it a red color. Don't worry, you don't have to save your table or escargot bread as this also has more divine crusty bread!! -Kale & Spinach Lyonnaise: get it, it's so refreshing and for a minute you think you're being healthy with your kale and spinach (what bacon?) but the flavor and textures of this salad are so so good. -The Caviar Nest: ohhh is she rich and creamy with a delightful hint of lemon and caviar saltiness. Now I grew up eating caviar but never on pasta...needless to say I will definitely be trying this at home. -Duck Chinoise: a really sizable serving of duck, I'd honestly say for 3+ vs 2. You might need additional crepes but the duck breast is equally as good on its own in that duck jus. -NY Strip: cooked to perfection, melt in your mouth steak. There's no shortage of steak in the city but not all steak is created equal and the preparation is spot on. -Whipped Potatoes & Cauliflower Au Gratin: more please and I hope you're open for takeout on holidays because these are the side dishes I dream of. -Frites: yes they come with aioli, no we didn't really need them but we wanted them and we were not disappointed :) At this point we needed to walk around the block a few times, loosen a belt buckle, maybe take a nap? But what's a birthday celebration without dessert? So we caved and got the Brûléed French Toast, it was decadent and almost bread pudding texture to me. I would like to try the chocolate hazelnut crepes next time though. Will 100% be returning here to try the rest of the menu, though probably not AS much as our first time haha! I mentioned to our wonderful waitress that I'm a vegetarian and asked if the fries were vegetarian or cooked in animal fat. She said they were and added that a number of items could be made vegetarian including the little gem salad. I noted the salad was marked on the menu as vegetarian and she said that's incorrect because their green goddess dressing includes anchovies. I don't have an allergy to anchovies but this could be a pretty big issue for somebody who does. And it makes me skeptical about the gluten ree markings on the menu too which again could be an issue for somebody with a serious reaction. I appreciate how knowledge our waitress was - a number of items not listed as vegetarian actually were animal product free - but if I hadn't asked the question and just gone by what the menu represented, I would have been disappointed. read more

This place really lived up to the hype! As soon as I stepped in, I was impressed by the entry's inviting and colorful decor. I was even more intrigued as I walked up the decorated stairwell and was floored by the look and feel of the restaurant. Being a plant lover myself, I was happy to see how green the entire room was. Our server was so friendly, knowledgeable and inviting. He definitely earned the higher tip we left. As for the food and drinks, everything we had was exceptional. We started with the escargot since we'd never had it before then jumped right ordering our main dishes: I went with the caviar nest and a side of mushrooms, and my partner landed with the flat iron steak with added crab and a side of asparagus. While waiting, he brought us delicious truffle tater tots to sample saying it pairs well with the truffle old fashioned I got. The petite caviar nest was the perfect amount, and I loved the charred mushrooms. As someone who doesn't ever do dessert, I was even interested in checking out the menu. I ended up not getting any and opted for the lavender espresso martini instead. I would say it was nice enough although I've honestly had better. When I came back from the restroom, I saw a plate of the French toast (the server let me sample that as well as he said it goes well with the martini). Overall, I really appreciated the entire experience, and I definitely plan on coming back - especially when they open the "garage door windows" (is what I call them lol) this summer. We had dinner with a group of friends on a Monday night so the restaurant was not busy. The restaurant is beautiful, we had a circle booth. Nothing we had was bad, just unremarkable. I shared the Tuna Crudo and Prime Beef Tartare appetizers, both were 'good'. Several folks at the table had the Crispy Bacon Fusilli and remarked the bacon was decidedly not crispy and the dish was otherwise forgettable. I had the Sea Bass, it was good but no hint of lemon and the marinated spinach overwhelmed the fish. I shared the Crème Bruleed French Toast and Bread Pudding deserts, the gelato being the highlight of both. The Bread Pudding had seemed under spiced and bland under the ocean of caramel. I am being picky because the restaurants self promotion and prices require it, I was thoroughly disappointed - this restaurant doesn't live up to the hype.
