Honestly don't see what all the hype is about. As a fine dining restaurant serving the everyday salad, app, and fish/meat entree, it's fine. But a French restaurant? The menu is so limited, McDonald's would have as many choices if they added French toast to its menu. I mean they don't even have a French onion soup, which I'm still trying to figure out how that's possible. read more

We had dinner with a group of friends on a Monday night so the restaurant was not busy. The restaurant is beautiful, we had a circle booth. Nothing we had was bad, just unremarkable. I shared the Tuna Crudo and Prime Beef Tartare appetizers, both were 'good'. Several folks at the table had the Crispy Bacon Fusilli and remarked the bacon was decidedly not crispy and the dish was otherwise forgettable. I had the Sea Bass, it was good but no hint of lemon and the marinated spinach overwhelmed the fish. I shared the Crème Bruleed French Toast and Bread Pudding deserts, the gelato being the highlight of both. The Bread Pudding had seemed under spiced and bland under the ocean of caramel. I am being picky because the restaurants self promotion and prices require it, I was thoroughly disappointed - this restaurant doesn't live up to the hype. Yes across the board! Came with another couple for a birthday dinner and we loved every moment of this meal (well maybe not the part when we had to pay, but honestly this meal was worth the $). The decor, buzzy atmosphere, perfect lighting, tables (spacious!!!), beyond friendly and professional waitstaff and bussers, and of course the food (so so much of it) all made for a great evening. And trust me you can't say no to all of the delicious bread, don't even try it. Just eat it and be happy it graced you with its crusty (in a good way) presence. The order: -Crab Croquette x4: these come as a single bite, very creamy and fresh tasting. I'm not a huge crab fan but these were delightful and if you love crab, don't miss out. -Roasted Escargot: I love a traditional garlic garlic garlic butter escargot and this one while still very good was lighter and felt more herb-y. That didn't stop me from dipping that crusty bread (see above) to soak up the butter goodness. Honestly, if I'm craving rich garlic escargot I'd probably skip here. -Steamed Muscles: deceivingly small dish but the muscles just kept on coming. Flavorful broth, still white wine but with tomato that gave it a red color. Don't worry, you don't have to save your table or escargot bread as this also has more divine crusty bread!! -Kale & Spinach Lyonnaise: get it, it's so refreshing and for a minute you think you're being healthy with your kale and spinach (what bacon?) but the flavor and textures of this salad are so so good. -The Caviar Nest: ohhh is she rich and creamy with a delightful hint of lemon and caviar saltiness. Now I grew up eating caviar but never on pasta...needless to say I will definitely be trying this at home. -Duck Chinoise: a really sizable serving of duck, I'd honestly say for 3+ vs 2. You might need additional crepes but the duck breast is equally as good on its own in that duck jus. -NY Strip: cooked to perfection, melt in your mouth steak. There's no shortage of steak in the city but not all steak is created equal and the preparation is spot on. -Whipped Potatoes & Cauliflower Au Gratin: more please and I hope you're open for takeout on holidays because these are the side dishes I dream of. -Frites: yes they come with aioli, no we didn't really need them but we wanted them and we were not disappointed :) At this point we needed to walk around the block a few times, loosen a belt buckle, maybe take a nap? But what's a birthday celebration without dessert? So we caved and got the Brûléed French Toast, it was decadent and almost bread pudding texture to me. I would like to try the chocolate hazelnut crepes next time though. Will 100% be returning here to try the rest of the menu, though probably not AS much as our first time haha! As others have said, beautiful space, fantastic staff, solid wine list, yummy food. I won't add any photos because there are so many very representative images already on this page. I'm taking a star off because of some issues with clarity in dietary information. I mentioned to our wonderful waitress that I'm a vegetarian and asked if the fries were vegetarian or cooked in animal fat. She said they were and added that a number of items could be made vegetarian including the little gem salad. I noted the salad was marked on the menu as vegetarian and she said that's incorrect because their green goddess dressing includes anchovies. I don't have an allergy to anchovies but this could be a pretty big issue for somebody who does. And it makes me skeptical about the gluten ree markings on the menu too which again could be an issue for somebody with a serious reaction. I appreciate how knowledge our waitress was - a number of items not listed as vegetarian actually were animal product free - but if I hadn't asked the question and just gone by what the menu represented, I would have been disappointed. read more

La Serre was EXCELLENT! Service was friendly, engaged, and informative. Food was SUPERB! Wine list was not overly extensive, but it was delightfully approachable. We started with martinis (of course!...) which were excellent. The Amuse truffle brie tart was KILLER! Caviar nest pasta is a MUST-HAVE. My wife is not a caviar fan, but even she loved it! We shared the NY Strip as an entree (plenty for 2). It was very well prepared, but just didn't stand out as well as the others. Sooooo Gooood! We can't wait to go again! read more

This place really lived up to the hype! As soon as I stepped in, I was impressed by the entry's inviting and colorful decor. I was even more intrigued as I walked up the decorated stairwell and was floored by the look and feel of the restaurant. Being a plant lover myself, I was happy to see how green the entire room was. Our server was so friendly, knowledgeable and inviting. He definitely earned the higher tip we left. As for the food and drinks, everything we had was exceptional. We started with the escargot since we'd never had it before then jumped right ordering our main dishes: I went with the caviar nest and a side of mushrooms, and my partner landed with the flat iron steak with added crab and a side of asparagus. While waiting, he brought us delicious truffle tater tots to sample saying it pairs well with the truffle old fashioned I got. The petite caviar nest was the perfect amount, and I loved the charred mushrooms. As someone who doesn't ever do dessert, I was even interested in checking out the menu. I ended up not getting any and opted for the lavender espresso martini instead. I would say it was nice enough although I've honestly had better. When I came back from the restroom, I saw a plate of the French toast (the server let me sample that as well as he said it goes well with the martini). Overall, I really appreciated the entire experience, and I definitely plan on coming back - especially when they open the "garage door windows" (is what I call them lol) this summer. A friend & I dined here last year & overall had an incredible experience ! She visited again to celebrate a birthday & I I will definitely visit again soon! First, the ambiance is stunning - with a charming decor, great lighting & wonderful flowers & greenery. You will find plenty of photo-worthy spots here! Second, we had spectacular service. Our waiter was prompt, informative & friendly. He suggested one/two things that we didn't plan to order & were happy we did! Finally, our food was amazing! We started with the Crab Croquettes Amuse - which was a delicious bite! We had French Onion Fondue, which we thought was just ok.. we found it heavy, rich and very salty - we would not recommend. We LOVED the Roasted Escargot - it was very delicious! Our absolute favorite dish was The Caviar Nest... in fact, just typing it here makes me want to make reservations again soon! Finally, we shared a Filet & Mashed Potatoes! The Filet melted in your mouth & the mashed potatoes were creamy & very tasty. While we loved & would recommend - a few things to take note of & the last items we'd love to see the restaurant address: 1) Just like in Paris... the tables are very close together...so be ready to elbow up to your neighbor! 2) We went early and found the noise level okay, but as the restaurant filled up... it got extremely loud & more difficult to enjoy conversation at the table. 3) Don't arrive early for your table as the bar area gets crowded very quickly and the space is too small to stand around the bar for a cocktail & the area near the host is very small. We'd love to see the restaurant address the reception area so guests arriving early for a cocktail or waiting for table aren't dodging service staff. read more

came here for my birthday last night and a few thoughts - i really loved the bacon pasta & steak, but other than that the cocktails were okay, some dishes were lacking flavor (i.e., crab croquettes, escargot) despite the high price, and while i didn't need a group of waiters to clap and sing, you'd think an expensive restaurant where the reservation was listed under birthday that the host/waiter would at least comment on the reason we're there or bring a little scoop of gelato with a candle. la serre is certainly the type of restaurant that people would go to for a birthday/celebration, so it's weird they're lacking in that area of customer service. not sure i'd go back read more

This is my new favorite spot! I've been dying to try it and finally got to celebrate my birthday here. Everything was great up to service and food! We started with the tuna crudo and escargot- excellent and flavorful. For our mains my partner had the gnocchi which was delicious soft/chewy great sauce and I had the linguine with clams so creamy and perfectly done! Plus I loved the added lemon breadcrumbs. We ended the night with the hazelnut crepes which completely melted in our mouths! Not overly chocolaty just the right amount. This will become our new date night spot! read more

This place was amazing. Service was too notch. Vibe was perfect for a girls night or a date night. Very floral and lots of photo ops. Food was incredible! For drinks we had the Gold Fashion, St. Tropez, and Bordeaux Sour - I would recommend all of them. For food we had the Crab Croquette, Truffle tater tots, Tuna Crudo, prime beef tartar, gnocchi, and the caviar nest. It was all so good. My favorite was the tuna Crudo and the Caviar Nest - very light and super tasty. Our host was Stasos and I would ask for him again. He made great recommendations. We also met one of the managers, Stella who was so pleasant and also told us about one of the other restaurants they are opening downstairs. I was here for a business dinner two nights ago - we had a reservation for 10. The place was packed (and loud - not the place to go if you want to have conversation over dinner). Wine list was decent, service I would rate as average (the place was packed that could be a factor). Food was plain average - we had a cross sampling of their appetizers, including the oysters and none of the items was terrible but didn't make me reach for seconds. Oyster were also slightly warmer than room temp. I had the scallops which also were about room temperature. Flavor was pretty bland as well. Had dinner at La Serre for the first time last night, and it was nothing short of amazing. My friend and I were blown away by the wonderful food, the top notch service, and the beautiful decor in the restaurant, and left the building thinking about when we will come back to try more items on the menu! The restaurant was full when we arrived (9pm res on a Thursday) not an empty seat, with a very vibrant and fun atmosphere. Looking forward to being back in the summer with the retractable windows up and open air adding to the Coastal French vibes. We started with the truffle tater tots which were a delight and practically melt in your mouth. Next was the roasted escargot, and while I haven't had a ton of escargot experiences, this was by far the best that I've had in Chicago. Next were the tuna crudo and the ceviche a la Française...both were amazing and beautifully presented. If you are considering one appetizer/shareable plate, it should be the ceviche! The little gem salad paired perfectly with everything else we ordered, and that dressing was definitely raised by rich parents, went to boarding school, then onto the Ivy Leagues. Finally, the crown jewel of the dinner, the caviar nest, completely lived up to the hype. The pasta, crème fraîsche, and caviar melted together exceptionally, and it was as delicious as it was beautiful. Be prepared to have to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get to the restaurant! Ambience is a very cute, but tables are close together. It is also quite loud and can be difficult to carry on a conversation. Food is very good. We had the French onion fondue ... delicious and served with crusty bread, the crab croquette ... just ok, lacked depth of flavor, the duck was cooked beautifully, served with thin pancake wraps and shredded pickled vegetables, the bone-in ribeye had a nice crust and cooked to a perfect medium rare, the clams with linguine... very rich cream sauce with a hint of lemon, warm apple pudding ... served with a butterscotch sauce which had just enough sweetness contrasted with cold vanilla ice cream. Food is 4 stars. They get 3 stars overall though because service was pretty sporadic ... at least our server was anyway. We noticed that the tables around us were getting constant attention from their server. To start, we had a reservation at 6:30pm and were seated promptly. Our water glasses were filled right away but it took a little while for our server to show up. We ordered drinks but when he came back with the them, he asked if we were ready to order. We replied that we hadn't looked at the menu yet. He then said, "I'll be back, but we are overbooked tonight so you have a 90 minute time limit." Not a very welcoming way to begin the evening. Secondly, if you overbooked, then you created the problem. Don't rush me through my meal because of it. Runners brought our food and he came by once to ask how the food was and if we needed more drinks. We didn't see him again until it was time for dessert. He took our dessert order but never asked if we wanted coffee. Our server had the table behind us. They also had the duck but he actually took the time to prepare their pancakes and serve it to them! That did not sit very well with us. Once our plates were cleared, he plunked down the check without asking if we needed anything else or thanking us for coming. Lastly, the 3.95% surcharge is B.S. COVID is over. Don't hesitate to ask them to remove it. Food may be good but bad service will always keep us from going back. read more

This place is truly a new gem in the West Loop! The decor is absolutely beautiful with all the greenery and natural lighting and the service was of course amazing. From the drinks at the bar to the extensive seafood forward menu, my group loved every dish we ordered. The mussels were amazing, the french onion fondue was unique and I probably could have eaten the whole thing myself, and the seafood tower was super fresh and well presented. The people were very nice, but the menu needs work. The dishes are almost all minuscule portions. These items are then served with bread, I'm assuming with the hope that diners will fill up on the bread, as opposed to the appetizers themselves. Whether it's the onion soup fondue or any other, the amount of the spread offered should be 2-3 times larger for the price being charged. They even pride themselves on a selection of 1-bite appetizers. Maybe they think that's cute, but at $11 / one-bite, I think it's offensive. The entrees, while great in flavor, are again overpriced for the size. ($75 for Dover Sole??) The sides also have great flavor, but aren't worth the price for the amount served. Pretty much every single dish I tried tasted amazing, but should've been either half the price or twice the quantity for the price charged. Overall, might be worth coming here as a first stop for cocktails, but it's a rip-off for dinner. read more

My girlfriend and I came in for dinner on a busy Saturday night, having heard about this place's famous caviar nest pasta (delicious - definitely get this if you go!). The consensus here was that while all of the food was excellent, the service, for the amount of money we spent on this meal, was disappointing and left something to be desired. We were seated 25 minutes past our reservation time and noticed that service felt overall slow the whole meal. Fine - it's a busy new popular restaurant on a Saturday night. We ordered the dover sole, but when it came out, we noticed the server having trouble deboning it, and after 10 minutes of attempting, they took it away without saying anything to us. When we asked our waiter about it, she said they were just "finishing it up" as it was undercooked... but it ended up taking another 30 minutes for it to be brought back out. By this point, the side was cold, and we weren't really that hungry anymore, so that wasn't the best experience. Overall, we'd definitely come back (again - that caviar pasta is a true winner) in hopes of having this delicious food paired with improved service next time. read more

On a packed Saturday night, empty tables uncleared just sitting dirty, while people waiting in the cramped hostess stand area. The food is fine, nothing had a WOW factor. Everything was good, nothing was stand out amazing. (CRISPY LEEK & EGGPLANT FRITTERS, TUNA CRUDO, CAVIAR NEST) Bathrooms were unkept, no towels available. I'd give it 4.5 if i could. went for restaurant week with 4 friends. the first issue was that we had a reservation for 9 and weren't seated till 9:30. they had us stand over by the bar which was in front of some tables, super crowded and loud, and i felt really bad just hovering by ppl trying to enjoy their dinner. when we finally got seated, we ordered drinks which were nice - i got the queen marie which was nice, not overly sweet, pretty complex flavor with good strength. the FOOD OHHH MY GOODDDD it was incredible. a complaint is that the amuse came after the appetizer came, but before we were done with the appetizer, which felt a little weird. also, i think they forgot the bread service as the tables around us seemed to all get it. the steak tartare was incredible, wish we could have had more bread with it besides just one half piece. the caviar tater tot was nice, very rich, would have been better before the tartare though due to the flavor complex. the gnocchi a la truffle was quite good, again i wish the portions were bigger. the sauce was amazing - wish there was more. i tried some friends' linguine and clams and it was the best i've ever tried. the dessert (french toast) was unreal. unfortunately we felt rather rushed throughout - food came out very quickly and service seemed very motivated to get us in and out asap. overall incredible food, but some things could be improved w the overall experience read more

Had really high hopes for this restaurant from the great reviews and nearly every blog/website listed this as the hottest new restaurant in Chicago for 2024. Boy did it deliver! Amazing ambience inside, incredibly friendly staff and our waiter was fantastic, and the food was absolutely incredible. The french onion fondue wasn't something we were planning on ordering but our waiter recommended it so we ordered it and I'm glad we did, so good! Oysters were great but the star of the entire meal was the tuna crudo. No idea how they manage to get such incredible flavoring, but they do, such a flavorful dish. The gnocchi pasta dish was very good and the 10oz filet was probably the second best thing we had after the tuna. Cooked to a perfect medium rare with incredible char on the outside. Add the frites to the steak, you won't regret it. Another home run restaurant for the West Loop/Fulton Market area that already has so much there. Will definitely be back! read more

We were excited to try La Serre during our visit to Chicago last weekend. The restaurant was hopping. In 20 minutes our excitement turned to dismay. We had a 7:30 reservation. We were not seated by 7:50 so my son asked the two hosts when we would be seated. They said the table had not left even though they had been finished for some time. He pressed when the table would be asked to leave since they were well past their 2 hour limit. They did not provide a straight answer. A few minutes later the manager came up. We thought she was going to apologize or offer us a drink in the bar. Instead she accused my son (smaller than either of the hosts) of making the hosts feel "uncomfortable" and asked him to change his attitude. She persisted in talking down to us. My mistake was not walking out. We were finally seated a half hour after our reservation. Our waitress was fine. The food was good although the portions were small. Still we could not get the bad taste from our dealings with the hosts and manager out of our mouths. We skipped dessert and got out of La Serre. We will never return. read more

I am in town for a work meeting and took myself on a solo date to La Serre when I got to town. I could not have had a more lovely evening. It was beautiful and bustling in there. Noise level is somewhat high, but I didn't mind, and I had no trouble hearing and communicating with the staff. I am also hard of hearing, so I usually have to strain a bit to hear under normal conditions. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. My waiter, Tasos, was super kind and guided me through the menu with suggestions. He was somehow always there, yet also unobtrusive. The tables are somewhat close together, yet all the service staff slinked seamlessly through the room. All tables were packed and I was amazed at their ability to do so. For dinner, I had: - crab cake amuse. It was delicious with a sneaky hint of chili, which I loved. I ate it in 3 bites instead of 1, which made it a little messy, but I got to savor it more! - petit caviar nest. Totally lives up to the hype. It was delicious. I do not normally like pasta enough to order it out, but I was so happy with my meal. The pasta tasted fresh, the sauce was amazing, and they weighed the caviar at the table before placing it atop my pasta. There seemed to be several menu options which are finished or plated table side, and again, this was done seamlessly despite the number of guests in the room. - grilled asparagus. A little woody at the stem end, which made some of them hard to cut, but otherwise, the grill flavor came through and it was a nice accompaniment to my pasta. I had a glass of Bordeaux and a glass of Chenin. The Chenin was the better of the two, IMO. Red doesn't seem like it would go with my meal, but it was wonderful. Plus I don't like white wine. I eat out at nice restaurants frequently. This was one of the best meals and atmospheres I have had in a while. I will recommend La Serre to everyone I know who will be visiting Chicago. I enjoyed my meal at La Serre and plan on returning. We tried a decent amount of the menu. The HERBE DE TRIUMPH cocktail was really good. I enjoyed the French onion fondue. The whipped potatoes were divine. I can't remember if we had the NY strip or ribeye, but whichever one we had was of great quality meat and cooked perfectly. The BRÛLÉED FRENCH TOAST was also delicious. The only criticisms I would give is that while the truffle tater tot was good, it was not worth $11 for one tater tot. The bacon radditore pasta was uneventful, and I almost felt the noodles were a bit overcooked. I had the CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT CRÊPES at its sister restaurant, Bar La Rue, but it wasn't anything special. The ambiance is fun and I went with a group of friends so I enjoyed the environment.
