Checked out this hole in the wall based on its feature on DDD and, once again, Guy came through. Highly recommend for a night of delicious tacos. La Santisima is a divey taco bar with massive margaritas, a huge taco selection, and excellent service. The place reads like an urban art gallery devoted to La Catrina and other Mexican themed art that also happened to have a bar and a kitchen. We each tried the three taco plate, with a fish (pacific whitefish and Mahi), a chicken (tinga and gaucho) and beef (gaucho and birria). All were portioned, perfectly cooked, and nicely seasoned. The margaritas were huge, but maybe lower in alcohol content (which was fine with me). The service we received is what makes this one of my favorite places I've tried in Phoenix. We had our infant twins with us and the servers were so helpful finding a spot to park our stroller. The server even offered to grab a snack for the babies to munch on while we waited. I love this place due to the large, I mean really large selection of salsas! There are over 10 different salsas that are so unique and fresh. My favorite things to eat is their Chicken Chipotle and Carne Asada tacos with a side of beans (that comes with cheese on top). These tacos are also on happy hour for $2! They also have a really good Horchata that is super unique and a little expensive, but it has real nuts and fruit in it that makes it special. I love bringing friends from out of state here! Although this place is not in a very safe-looking area, when you walk in it looks very clean and comfortable. The decor inside is very unique and artistic. Everything here was just totally ok. Started out with a couple of margaritas and their free chips and salsa. The chips were pretty stale, but the salsa was pretty good. I feel like the margs were sitting in the kitchen for a while because when we got them they tasted pretty watery. We got the three taco plate and an al pastor burrito. The meat on one of my tacos was pretty dry and all three tasted pretty under seasoned. The best part was the corn rice that came on the side. This place seems to be doing quite a bit of pick up orders and dine in service, and I think that might also be affecting their service. We had to ask for water three times and finally got it after we had already finished eating. Overall, nothing was bad but nothing was worth coming back for. read more

I have only been here for brunch, but can't wait to try lunch or dinner on for size! We were the first table in on Sunday and were greeted right away by our server and felt at home with its cozy interior. It's a small place but has lots of character with the heavy solid wood and wrought iron furniture. Love the Dia de Los Muertos art and heavy wood bar with cowhide bar stools and authentic Mexican glassware. We sampled quite a few of the salsas at the salsa bar and there is a little something for everyone including those that can't take a lot of spice. This is a big plus for us since our family has spice tolerances from 1 to 10+. What was on our menu? we tried the divorced eggs (which I added avacado), black mole chilaquiles with chicken, and an egg scramble with side of bacon; all of which were served with black beans.... Delicious and full of flavor! I'll have to post the brunch menu next time since it is not currently on their website. We have always loved this restaurant! It has become one of our go-to spots that we frequent probably twice per month. The food is always spot on and the service is superb for a casual restaurant such as this. I love the fish taco plate, my boyfriend ALWAYS gets the el pastor burrito (can't remember the name on the menu). They also have the best bean and cheese burrito called the bullet.... and I consider myself a bean and cheese connoisseur. Lastly, the people who own this place or work here, they feel like a big family and treat you as such. Siempre nos ha encantado este restaurante! TERRIBLE. I arrived to this location as a birthday dinner at 6:00 and told the wait would be 30 min (since we did not have reservation), said that was fine and waited the time. Was sat down approximately at 6:40 and the hostess took our drink order and returned promptly. This was the only prompt thing to happen as our waitress did not come to take our food order for another 30 minutes, and only came because we had to tell the hostess that no one had come yet. Waited for an appetizer that took 25 minutes to arrive. Asked about our food THREE TIMES. And at 8:40, 20 MINUTES BEFORE THE CLOSING TIME, our food was still not out. Spoke to the waitress that we had not seen since we ordered our food. And told her we wanted the food for take out. Keep in mind, we had waited 2 HOURS FOR OUR FOOD. The waitress when hearing our frustration was very rude and defensive. Stating that she had another party to attend and telling us that we have to understand this. We should have been told prior to this wait that because they had a large party, they could not attend us. Instead we waited HOURS, asking about food that never came, and receiving terrible food in the take out boxes when it did. The chorizo and Carne asada tacos were burnt and the rice and beans were placed in small salsa container. When we asked the waitress for more salsa lids she stated that she would have to CHARGE EXTRA FOR SALSA LIDS. When we got the expensive tab (the waitress stated she would remove two dishes from the tab, this was a complete lie and we had to ask to see the receipt) we saw that she still wanted to CHARGE US 20% of GRATUITY for the take out order. My favorite mexican spot in the valley and I cannot recommend them enough. I loved going here with friends (both locations) back when we could actually dine out with friends, but they have been a treat to get takeout from while supporting this family business. They have tons of vegan options, and they have 32oz TAKE OUT MARGARITAS! Their margaritas are also some of the best I've had so this was a great way to have a "night out" at home. Only minor complaint is that their menus both on Yelp and on their website are a bit outdated; their menu last time I dined in with them pre-Covid was pretty expanded and had a separate vegan/vegetarian section, and you can really only find pictures of it on their Facebook. They have so many options and all were delicious.. Tried for the first time the strawberry salsa, which I drank like a shooter (yum!) and the jicama salsa was really good, you could eat this like a side salad, nice crunch!! Decided to stop by as we made our way though Phoenix along our road trip. Was very excited and had my hopes up for a delicious Mexican meal. Decided on their taco combination plate which is a order of 3 tacos along with beans and rice. Salsa bar was pretty good as we're their chips. Unfortunately their rice was awful, was overcooked and microwaved to a large glob of paste. Honestly it was unappetizing to have it on my plate as it made me think that the rest of the meal was also microwaved. Made a comment to the waiter as I felt it could be a point of improvement. They have a really good salsa bar and lots of menu items that I've never seen before. We had their $3 negro modelo special, a shark taco, a marlin taco, and 2 chicken mole tacos...DELICIOUS! A classic Hole In The Wall that is a solid 4.5 to 5.0. The only ding was the lack of attention after our order was placed. This place has an amazing salsa bar with things like a 7 Chili Salsa, Peanut Salsa (think Vietnamese Peanut sauce crossed with hot peppers - amazing!), Radish Salsa Jicama Salsa (Jicama, Cilantro and Lime - yum), Pico de Gallio, Green Salsa, Red Salsa.. I think there were 12 in total. Too bad the chips were a bit stale and not that special. The gourmet tacos were amazing. Try the house special asada. I also had the chicken rings, pastor and a plain asada. All were hot, juicy and flavorful. This is going to be a regular stop when I am in Phoenix. When I ordered chips to go and asked for salsa, he replied with, we don't have to go containers. Ambience: A Cleanliness: A Customer Service: B Food: B+ Price -It is fairly inexpensive. Compared to other places I've been to in the area I think its in that cheap to moderate range. Atmosphere -It looks like a hole in the wall when you walk in and its kinda of a turn off, but when you go to the large dinning area its really nice so the moral of the story is don't judge a book by its cover (or its entry way in this case I guess) Customer Service You order and pay at the counter as if it were a fast food place, but if you are staying they give a number and someone brings the food to you. It's fine, but I think because they have the huge dinning room, they should just take it the extra step and offer full service. I think it would just add a little extra something to the experience. Food So I spent an entire week in Arizona eating nothing but tacos, burritos and enchiladas and I've had all three at this restaurant (we visited twice) and I'd say its food falls right in the middle. It is not the best Mexican food I've had locally, but it is fairly close to the top. If their meat had just a little bit more flavor it would probably be one of my favorites. Their drinks however are AMAZING! Overall I think this is a solid lunch or dinner place. Good food, good price, I just wish it was a little bit more upscale by adding wait service. read more

We were traveling in Arizona, found this place on the show website of Diners Driveins and Dives The number of vegetarian options they have is second to no other mexican restaurants we have dined in. You can eat here just for their salsa bar if nothing else. They have about 15 varieties of salsas most of which are awesome! Wow! I am truly amazed by this place and it is now one of my favorite places. It is small so not recommended for big groups but the food is OUTSTANDING. The only thing good about this place is the host, Joel. Horrible service, in so many ways!! I ordered the Carne Asada taco which is listed with onion and cilantro. It comes out with cabbage and I'm told, "yeah, that's how they make it, with cabbage" Ummmmm so why does the menu say onion and cilantro?? I ate 1/3 of my food so I'm heading somewhere else to eat.
