I've had much of the Mexican cuisine in Dekalb, IL and this is the best so far. Affordable food that doesn't compromise in the taste department. I was looking for somewhere cheap and quick while in town for my daughter's competition that was at the university just down the road. I knew the food was going to be good as soon as I walked in. I got the #1 special which was a beef taco and a cheese enchilada with rice and beans. They brought over a free bowl of hot tortilla chips and homemade salsa which was perfect. The service was nice and simple and quick. The prices in my opinion were very affordable. Whatever the creamy red salsa was I could've drank it was that good. I finished it off with a fruit punch Jarritos. The only downside is they do not have a bathroom but there's a coffee shop two doors down that does so for me it wasn't a problem. If you're from out of town just know that you park all the way to the right of this two-story plaza and it is all the way on the opposite end downstairs just past the barbershop. They do take credit cards which is a plus. I will definitely eat there again if I'm ever in town for a competition and highly recommend it to anyone who needs somewhere quick and easy if you're in the area. read more

This place has good food, but it is located in a sketchy area, with sketchy customers to match! So beware! Other than that, the food and service is good. Stick with the carne asada, chorizo, al pastor tacos or burritos and you will enjoy your meals. There is a plant inside the restaurant that is so long it wraps around the entire place! I was looking for an easy, inexpensive lunch option while driving through DeKalb. This fit the bill. The complimentary chips and pico were good. I enjoyed my carnitas taco. The pork filling in the tamale was good; I was surprised it was wrapped in banana leaf rather than corn husk, and there was a lot of dough surrounding it. The chicken on my tostada was a bit dry but I enjoyed the overall flavor. Service was prompt. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

Was on Facebook the other day and there was a vote for best tacos in Dekalb Co. I try to yelp local places and realized we've never tried this place. It's on campus, which isn't too far from us- a nice little half hour walk. When we got there, there was a sign stating to place an order by telephone or eat street. I called and no answer, so I tried to do an order on my phone. I almost walked away to the place across the street when my boyfriend just suggested we go in and order. Luckily staff was very nice and told me it would only be a couple mins. The food was definetly worth the wait! Way better than the last place I yelped for tacos and food was authentic! Steak was actually steak and verde sauce was on point. I actually might have liked the rojo sauce a little more!! So glad we tested out this taco joint. Only negative about this location is that the pictures and menu stated tacos to be $1.89 but when we got there, they were $2.09 I think. Not that big of a deal, still worth the money!! read more

Stopped here from Chicago going to NIU and were amazed by the deliciousness! Tried the costillas in both salsa verde and Chile seco. The flavors were authentic and rich. Tacos, Salsas, y Carnitas is definitely the best Mexican food I've found in Dekalb so far. I had a steak taco, beef tostada, and rice. My fiance had a steak burrito. The steak was soooo gooood. Usually all steak tacos taste pretty similar in my book, but this place made it to the top of my list. The chips and salsa were also very good. I loved the different salsas and hot sauces they put on your table. All were delicious. It was really unexpected because the place is kind of run down and simple inside. I wouldn't hesitate to go back, every time I pass it I want to run in and get a steak taco. Also very reasonable prices. This is the best authentic Mexican food in the Dekalb/Sycamore area. Way better than the Burritoville across the street. Beware! The sign is labeled La Salsa and there's a caption underneath it saying Tacos Salsas Y Carnitas. This is the right place! My boyfriend and I went for the first time there a couple of days ago and all the food was so great. The burritos we ordered to go were very presentable. A little less filled compared to Burritoville's, but cut in half and not soggy. The salsas we got were very spicy, but it's not a bad thing. We also ordered the horchata, which was delicious. The other places that sell horchata in the area are waterier, but this one was packed with flavor. This place though is the best I have had in region. Tacos have been great every time I eat here and I have made it a regular go to spot for my Mexican food. 11/19/14 Went in for my first time cause of Yelp and Google reviews. Ordered 3 tacos, 1 burrito, and fries. Tacos were okay (lettuce, tomato, beef, onion), shells were soft, but tasted off (don't eat them cold). The burrito was regular (with re-fried beans), with cheese and salsa. No salsa, burrito was SUPER greasy, no beans or salsa was added to burrito. They didn't give me any fries (even though they took my ticket, CLEARLY with FRIES on it), and because I didn't get a receipt I couldn't confirm I had paid for the fries or not (my fault). This is my all time favorite Mexican joint in DeKalb. They offer very authentic Mexican food at super low prices. It's located across from Burritoville and I was once told that Mexican Burritoville employees go to Tacos Salsas Y Carnitas for lunch. Between my friends and me everything on the menu has been tried and there have never been any complaints. The only thing I would say is that the staff is very Mexican and sometime it was strange being one of the few non Spanish speaking patrons. TSYC is very good food. The location blends in and could be passed but it is a restaurant and their is a Mexican grocery store next store. I have always ordered tacos either Carnitas or steak and both always hit the spot. The chips and salsa at the table are fresh and tasty. The price is juuuust right. Love this joint. I probably come here about 4 times a month. I live by El Burrito Loco (now called "3 Burrito's or something) and I gladly go out of my way to make it to Salsas y Carnitas (also called "La Salsa Restaurant"). La Salsa is my favorite Mexican restaurant in DeKalb. The food is made with a lot of love. The 2 taco dinner is my favorite. At lunch time you get 3 tacos for the same price as the previous( $5.99) and that comes with a drink too. They DO take credit cards. I saw earlier a review that said "cash only". The ambiance is best in the daytime when the tacky fluorescent lights aren't on. This place is more of a "fast Mexican/ to go" food place than a comfy restaurant to take a first date to. But they do still operate like a "restaurant" with a waitress who brings you chips and menus and you tip her nicely please! Some of the staff do not speak very good English, so be relaxed and make sure you are getting what you want. read more

This place is the best taco place I've ever been to. I'm from Chicago and went to school in DeKalb. I ate here multiple times a week for years. I could not get enough. I was a "regular" and the waitstaff knew my order almost always. I'd switch it up on them sometimes. You can not go wrong with their burritos, steak tacos, and enchiladas in green sauce. Also got a side of guacamole - I asked the guac to be extra spicy and boy did they deliver! Also, the red hot salsa is AMAZING.
