Being in Rochelle does not offer a wide variety of restaurants, but I enjoy coming here for some Mexican. The food is good, hot, and pretty tasty. I'll usually get the carne asada tampiquena along with some guacamole. The margaritas are decent and a meal with with drinks for two is between $40-$50. Stopped in at 8:00 on a Friday night. The menu selection and prices are great. The food was even better. The salsa and green and red sauces are homemade. The red sauce has some kick, but not too much, and sooo much flavor. The Margaritas were not too sweet like so many bottles mixes. They actually had a nice sweet-tart flavor and the beer was cold. I went there with family and a friend after it was recommended to me. Went on a Saturday around 1 p.m . There was only 1 other couple in there. They were almost finished. We asked for a table and was seated at a half booth/table. Strike 1. We ordered our drinks(water) . Waited for the waitress(owner) to come back and take our order. I asked for hot salsa for the chips. The chips were stale . Strike 2 . The hot salsa was good tasting. I ordered a combination. Chili Rellanos looked like it was put in a microwave(cheese was hard and darkened) The shredded beef taco the meat looked like it was leftover and was hard. I left the tostada,Chili Rellanos and part of the taco. My friend ordered fajitas and it smelled good and was sizzling when it came to the table. No cheese,sour cream or guacamole to go with it. Another person ordered steal tacos. Very little meat and cheese. Strike 3. The owner never checked if we needed anything. The owners kids were there eating and the daughter came and took dishes away. We got takeout. The staff was polite and helpful. My husband's shrimp cocktail was five stars, the flavor was just like his mom used to make. Rochelle, Illinois. 20 years ago, a sleepy little village. Rochelle today, industry has come back, and strangely, a bit of tourism based in the famous "Lincoln Highway" and maybe more-so in the "Rochelle Railroad Park", a great little spot where trains go by often and people from around the world visit. I have been coming here for years to watch trains. In the early years, the food choices were not much and so-so. In the last bunch of years, since interstate 39 was finished and the railroad park got built, an ethanol plant and then the Union Pacific Railroad built a large facility, Rochelle has been booming. Along with the industry, there are a lot more choices for food. Tecalitlan is a place we didn't really notice, in a quiet corner of a strip mall. Years ago, small town mexican food was not done all that well. I had some bad experiences that made me never want to try mexican food outside of Chicago, where it's mostly great and available 24 hours a day. Now that many more hispanics are spread out all over the country, the food has improved. Finally the other night, we stopped in. We ordered a couple of Negro Modelos. They came really cold, with a frosted glass. The second round came with a new frosted glass. So many places don't bother, once you have the glass, so right away they get props. I don't drink much at all, but I like a cold beer when I have a beer. There was a cute little girl, peering at us from the next booth. We played hide and seek games with the menus and she giggled. Why did I bother bringing that up? Because this is a family place and it felt really warm and friendly. Our waitress was great and very sweet. She beamed with pride when she told us that everything was homemade and freshly made. My only regret is that I don't remember the actual names of the dishes we had. Chips tasted fresh, salsa was not too oniony and not too hot. My friend ordered a fish dish. The fish was grilled perfectly and covered with a tomato based sauce, with lots of green peppers and onions. I had a pork dish that was described as "very hot and spicy" with a very special and uncommon kind of sauce. (sorry i can't remember details!) The pork was tender and the sauce was really nicely spicy. Not super hot, but hotter than most places that claim things are very spicy. We also had some Chile Rellenos. A beautiful dark green pepper, bursting with cheese, with a light breading. Delicious. The rice and beans were also very tasty. The beans were not heavy and not lardy tasting. The food was great, the service very attentive, a clean dining room, and now we have a new great place to go after a long hard day of sitting on our cabooses and watching trains rumble by. read more

Got the shrimp enchiladas was very authentic. I'm from California where there is a Mexican restaurant on every corner.. trust me when I say that the food is good. Shrimp cocktail is also very unique. I usually add lime and salt to give the cocktail more flavor but in this case there is no need. Probably the best shrimp cocktail I've had. I don't like writing bad reviews but this was the worst Mexican meal I have ever had (Arroz con pollo). I could have had more tender shoe leather at Rack Room or DSW than the grilled chicken breast I was served. The meal took a long time to get, perhaps because they were overcooking it so much. My colleague had an enchilada he said was good. (But he had had really bad Chinese the night before so he may have been desperate! ) I will never return here. Some people might like the salsa and chips, but salsa had such an afterburn that I could not take a second bite. Chips were thick and tough. If that's authentic, it's not my choice. Fantastic Mexican. You never know what you are going to get walking into a strip mall Mexican food joint, but the table full of older Latina ladies made this look promising. The menu had a great mix of traditional Mexican food like mole, menudo, and other items along side the expected nachos, fajitas, tacos and burritos. Was driving through Rochelle and decided to look for some good Mexican food. This place had good reviews so we thought we'd take a chance. One review stated that food was good, but service was slow. I take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt because you never know the reason unless you're present at the time. But I do have to say, there were only 2 wait staff and the place was full, but it shouldn't take 20 minutes to take my order. Order was taken, food arrived after a while. Can't say it was anything better than good. I'll be back in Rochelle from time to time but will not stop here again. :( read more

I am torn on how to rate Tecalitlan, I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. I feel like a regular here...since there are not many Mexican restaurants in Rochelle this has become my go-to place. The restaurant is always busy, they have an extensive menu, reasonable prices, the food is consistently good, but the service could be improved upon. There is usually only one waitress waiting on the entire restaurant which makes it impossible to provide quality customer service. If visiting Rochelle, I would suggest Tecalitlan for its food but I would also recommend you arrive earlier in the evening to increase your odds of beating the rush and slow service. read more

I fly to this area about twice a year and have eaten here twice. Both times the food was very good, the salsa great and spicy and the people very nice! Standard American Mexican fare mostly but I love that they real Mexican dishes as well. And a few items for in case someone in your party still wants meat and potatoes foods. Easy place to relax and watch a game while you have your chips and salsa fix. And not too loud either! I'll go back, probably on each visit! read more

I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times. My most recent visit with a couple of friends on Valentine's Day was great! The restaurant was pretty busy, with only a few tables open, but the service was still good. I had the Especial Teca and my friends had fajitas.
