I had the pick 3: pastor taco-Mexican style, chicken tamale, and a cheese and onion enchilada with red sauce. The pastor was different than other local establishments as they used a mole seasoning which gave it a hint of cinnamon and a whole different layer of flavor that wasn't overly spicy, just different than what I'm used to. I base my judgement of most Mexican food places with the quality of their tamales. Most Mexican families I know hand down tamale recipes through generations and the good traditions shine through in this small stuffed rolled corny piece of meaty joy! In my opinion a good tamale has a great mix of sweet with the corn mixture, savory and spice with quality and flavor of the meat and then is carefully rolled together and steamed... And served in the corn huske. No tamale should ever NEED to be slopped on with chilli... And at Flamingos... The tamale I had was fabulous. It was tender, still hot because the huske kept it so, and the chicken was juicy and flavorful enough to make my mouth crave more! Based solely on that portion of my plate, I'm excited to see what this establishment comes up with in the future! Bravo! Such a unique experience! When we walked in, I couldn't figure out if the food was going to be more "fast food" variety Mexican. It was surprisingly SO so good. Many places do not have the Mexican street corn and on the the cob nonetheless! How many places can your child get a scoop or ice cream or milkshake with their Mexican food? My kids loved their milkshake along with their nachos and omelette. The nachos were huge and had a ton of meat on them. My husband and I both had a burrito. We were very pleased by the quality. Flamingo is THE TRUTH. My girlfriend and I went in with pretty low expectations - I mean, we're in Dekalb, there's a bank inside, and they seem to be advertising their ice cream more than their Mexican food. However, after eating lunch there yesterday, I can confirm that Flamingo competes with just about any Mexican restaurant I've been to in the city. We started with the complimentary chips and salsa. (well, probably more sauce than salsa) The chips were great, and the sauces were also very good. I had a steak torta, which was fantastic. The steak was flavorful, and the lettuce and tomato was fresh. The sandwich was plenty for me, and I've been known to pack away large helpings of food in one sitting. My girlfriend got three tacos, and I tried them all. The first thing I noticed was how delicious the tortillas were. I'm guessing they're made in house, but even if they're made offsite, they're some of the best I've had. The chicken was very good, the steak was obviously enjoyable, but the pastor was the clear winner. I now understand why so many reviews mention it. Everyone needs to experience Flamingo for more than just the ice cream. The environment here is clean and the staff is very attentive. The food was served pretty quickly after ordering and it was some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while. I finished my meal by ordering something called a Churro Sundae. I didn't know what it was but I knew I needed to find out and. Exactly as advertised it was a piping hot churro drizzled in what I remember as being chocolate sauce, but It could have been caramel. Ambiance sucks but if you stay you get chips and salsa. Ask for the other salsas too if you're staying. They're very good. They'll give you three squeeze bottles of 'em. There's also a bunch of pink flamingos all around and it's all quite tacky, but very clean. You can actually get real 100% juices made here. Tacos were a nice size, all were stuffed with a good amount of meat. Both the chorizo and lengua didn't have much flavor, but the steak was excellent. They threw in a nice amount of salsa as well. I come in about once a week with my family. We always have an enjoyable meal. Friendly ladies at the counter. Excellent beans and rice, and I always enjoy my tacos. Occasionally they get my younger son's tostada wrong. I think they are a little weirded out that he doesn't want meat on it. Other than that we never have any problems.
