My daughter's car broke down on 95, so she got off the highway and I met her in the parking lot of La Roca. We called AAA, and while we were waiting, naturally we went in to have a bite to eat. My daughter got the cheese empanadas and some rice and beans, and I got the shrimp with mashed plantains. Absolutely delicious, and the staff and patrons were extremely friendly and accommodating. Contrary to what I have heard, this place serves good tasting Dominican food. The plancha de pollo (grilled chicken) and the chicharon de pollo (deep fried chicken) were delicious. One of the best things about Rhode Island is that the great diversity of restaurants allows you to take a trip and enjoy a world cuisine without more than a 20 minute drive! We selected La Roca on a cold winter night based on the suggestion of a colleague from the D.R. and a hankering for some tasty treats from Latin America. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and while not a native speaker, I enjoy the opportunity to try out my college-level Spanish. The place is impeccably clean including the dining room and bathroom. We chose a booth which was spacious and comfortable. In the end we ordered in English though I sprinkled in a few words in Spanish to show that I could. We ordered salad, steak and onions with a side order of moro (rice and beans), chicken and plantains, and a passion fruit beverage. The portions were very good size. The steak was moist and the onions had a nice flavor. The chicken was also tender and moist. If anything, perhaps a bit salty so if you have an issue with your blood pressure, you may want to ask in advance for low salt. The plantain chips were nice, especially with a little ketchup. The moro was very tasty, especially mixed in with some of the steak and onions. We had ample extra moro and plantains to take home. Suggest trying the passion fruit beverage---it was sweet with a tangy note. Prices were great for what we got---less than $40 with tip. Big thank yous all around as we left---we hope to come back soon to experience another delicious trip to Dominican Republic without having to pack bags or leave our little state. read more

My friend and I ordered the pollo fongo. This is mashed plantains with fried chicken pieces baked inside. It was okay but be careful there are bone pieces in there. Also, the fongo was dry. The gravy that's included was a little too thick for my liking so I didn't use too much of it. We also had a side of fried chicken pieces and they were decent, could have been a bit more seasoned. My other friend ordered steak with rice, bean sauce, avocado and fried plantains. Now her meal was delicious, I'm so glad she shared with us. The steak pieces were juicy and finely cut. The rice and beans sauce were my favorite, reminded me of home. I basically devoured her meal and left mines half eaten. As for the service, it was not so great. The waitress gave us another tables order. When she came back with our correct order, they were in to go boxes. She said she had mistaken marked the order to go . Okay fine; but then when we are done with our meal, it takes a long while for her to finally come over to clear our table but doesn't bring the check or ask if we want anything else . After 20 minutes, my friend finally calls her over to bring our check. Another 20 minutes and my friend had to call her over to take our payment. I needed a bag for my to go tray and decided to go up to the counter to ask for one. She is answering calls with her back towards myself and another customer, so we had to grab her attention before she answered another call so she knew people were waiting. Strange place! The staff speaks mostly Spanish and the menu is in Spanish and English. But the food is mostly Italian! Each entry comes with a choice of one side. Choices are rice and beans, plantains, french fries and one more that I can't remember but sounded Mexican. This lead to some odd combinations: spaghetti and meatballs with rice and beans? I had chicken Parmesan with french fries. The chicken saved the meal. It was excellent! Tender and full of flavor. The coating was crisp and well seasoned. The fries were bland but ok. In the future, I will order takeout, add my own noodles and veggies to the chicken for a good meal. Keep the fries for an American meal tomorrow, or get the rice and beans and make tacos! read more

My husband is Spanish. So when we were pointed in the direction of this place we tried it out. Excellent beans and rice. They give good portions for take out. Great flavor. Meat is ALWAYS tender. I give it four stars the food is the best Spanish food in this neighborhood (broad Street is only five minutes away but that's days in RI time) and it's cheap and quick. The food was great. However the service was terrible! When we first walked in and sat down no one came to serve us. Everyone else sitting around us(who just happened to be Hispanic) were greeted with menus and had one of the staff take their orders.
