This is the closest coffee place to my work and I come here often for a pick me up. I'm a fan of their drinks! My favorite drink here is the Iced Cinnamon Coffee. Their bread and coffee is always freshly made and on point. I stop by La Monarca at least 2 times per week on my way to work. I normally grab a conchita and a small iced coffee. More often than not my conchita is warm, soft, and simply delicious. In the past I've had their blended Oaxacan beverage. This beverage is a mix of coffee beans, and Mexican hot chocolate; it's out of this world! I typically don't drink sugary drinks, but the blended beverages at La Monarca are an exception. On a couple occasions, I have forgotten my lunch at home so I pick up a chicken and veggie salad. This is not your typical salad with lettuce, in fact, this salad has no lettuce. Instead the salad is made up of corn, black beans, garbanzos, cilantro, and lime. Yummy! The customer service at this location is exceptional. Even though I come here very often ( I'm starting to notice that the ladies who work here recognize my face) I am always warmly greeted, and I still get samples of the different items on their menu. I drove pass here and remember the butterfly from their store in Pasadena. I remember good things from the other store, so decided to come check this one out since i'm in this area more than I am in South Pasadena. I came here to pick up a cake for my friend's birthday. They had many samples of their cake. I had a sample of the mexican chocolate and strawberry shortcake. I was a fan of both. The girl helping me was super sweet. Very helpful. I also ended up getting a ice coffee with brown sugar and cinnamon. Always a favorite of mine here. It was super yummy with some half and half in it. I preordered a cake for my son's birthday this past weekend, I scheduled my pick up time at 11AM. My dad did me a favor to go and pick up the cake only to come and find out that the cake was not ready... he drove home and was called an hour and a half after... I was very disappointed, because this incident took extra time off our party prep and backed us up a notch. This one star is for the kind of treatment I received in this location. I typically have good experiences in this monarcha chain of cafes but this one in particular had the staff treat me in such a disrespectful manner. Here's what happened , I came to this location to meet with a friend and after driving for an hour I had to use the restroom so bad ! I asked the staff if they could open the restroom for me and they said it was for customers only . Everything in this café today was great I have no complaints at all the two ladies that were working were very nice to me. I even thought the coffee was a little light and the lady was nice enough to give me something that I really enjoyed. The coffee has a really good taste and I love their sweet breads all of them are good. The bolilo sandwiches are amazing, the deserts are too good to be true. You could litterally have a different pasrty daily for several months, and almost all of them will be your favorite. Great bakery and coffee! I had the Cafe de Olla, cuerno de trigo and a galleta de agave! Coffee was so delicious I had a refill. Refills on coffee and Cafe de Olla are $1. I went in the afternoon to get some studying done. It was quite, with plenty of space and outlets. Customer service is great, they answered all my questions and made recommendations. I also had a puerquito (I think I spelled that right?) and it was great. A nice place to stop and have dessert. I took off a Star Bc I didn't like my coffee but I got an espresso drink and I'm super picky (grew up in Italy) so I know I'm kind of mean about coffee. I've been hearing so much about La Monarca I wanted to visit when I was close by one of their locations. They seem to be rapidly expanding and I wanted to see why. I've had a taste of their pastries over the years during my annual visits to Tacolandia and was excited to finally visit one of their bakeries. This location has the look of a standard, bakery chain. They source their coffee beans it seems from Oaxaca. I had an iced, flavored coffee, but not too impressed by it. It's probably as good as the McDonald's iced coffee I get from time-to-time out of drive through convenience sorry to say. Tierra Mia I think impressed me more with their recommended horchata latte. I know they are different drinks, but I am comparing their highly recommended items. We did a tasting of their pastries including the ever so popular conchas. Living in Los Angeles, I've had these pastries through the year at hole-in-the-wall Mexican and Salvadorean bakeries, and also at Vallarta numerous times. I've find these smaller conchas to be among the best, if not the best I've tasted so far. Something about them being smaller than usual made them more appealing to me. It's didn't seem as dry as the other versions I've tasted. I also enjoyed the icing on top of the conch. The cookies were quite good as well and wouldn't hesitate revisiting La Monarca for their pastries. If I saw one location in passing, I would not hesitate to stop by for a conch or some cookies! Probably some of the friendliest staff I have encountered in a coffee shop. As soon as I walked in they had me try the taco and also one of their special lattes. I won their Twitter contest. I won a basket full of their goodies! So imagine my disappointment when I found out I had to pick it up in Santa Monica. A drive to Santa Monica from Commerce is like 40 minutes and that's if there isn't any traffic. There's always traffic. Anyway, my aunt also won the contest and told me that the Rene, who I believe to be the owner, told her that my basket of goodies could be taken to their Commerce location for me to pick up! My fiance and I headed out there today. It's very clean and modern looking for a Mexican panaderia. I liked it. But the smell, sweet jesus the smell...it took all of my self-control not get all their pan dulce and shove them in my mouth. Weight Watchers can do that to a girl. While we waited for the worker (a super nice lady) to locate my basket, the fiance bought a tres leches cake and I settled for two cookies. See! I'm a good girl. The fiance said the cake was good and the cookies were yummy, too. While we waited we also saw several people come in a buy a variety of things: bolillo, conchas, etc., so they're definitely doing something right. My wife and I tried this on recommendation from a friend of hers. They were spot on. Well worth the drive from the OC. This is a step up from your traditional panaderia. They have all the traditional breads (conchas, etc...) except they are made with quality organic ingredients whenever possible. They have an amazing menu of mexican coffees. Enough to make you leave your regular coffee chain. We were totally welcomed by the staff and they let us try anything we wanted. They were so cool. Needless to say we bought a ton of sweet bread. This bakery should be at the top of LA's Best Cakes list (if there is such). After a fall of flavor with my go to cake place, and keeping with goal of becoming a more aware and sustainable consumer, I came across La Monarca Bakery. La Monarca Bakery has teamed with Ecolife Foundation focusing on protecting the endangered Monarch butterflies of Mexico. With such worthy sustainable mission, I drove to the Commerce location in search of a cake. The bakery is located in a shopping strip that features a Target and El Super market; therefore, depending on the time that you go, parking can be seen a little daunting. To be sure; driving east on Whittier enter the parking lot at the east-most end of the shopping strip - that is where the bakery is at anyway and also there is less in/out traffic. Once you enter the bakery, you will feel at ease. The bakery has some sort of calming effect; perhaps all the deliciousnesses that are on display. The attendant was quick to offer me assistance. She was also not bothered by the many questions I had about cake flavors and prices. What was even better and perhaps should be part of EVERY bakery in existence, is the offering of samples of cakes they have for sale. The attendant let me sample all of the cakes but feeling a bit guilty, I just sampled three of the six flavors. After much debate and contemplation of leaving with three cakes instead of the one, I chose the traditional strawberry shortcake. And, how do you know it was a hit? One scoop of strawberry ice and a few baked goods cost me only $9,20. I ate everything at the same day. Yes, I am a glutton, but I don't gain weight, thank you very much. The two cheese danishes were delicious. I am so used to the sweetened cheese danishes at Starbucks that I actually had to take a second look at the pastry after I bit it to be sure it was a danish. I purchased 4 croissants; 2 filled with chocolate, 2 filled with caramel. All delicious. The chocolate's one were generously filled :) I bought 4 mini conchas, 2 of chocolate and 2 of vanilla.... yummy. However, now the bread quality seems to have lowered by a noticeable margin and selection has decreased as well. Well this is definitely not the worst bread you can get I do not reccomend coming here, it isn't worth the price. This bakery satisfies ALL kinds of sweet tooths! My sister has been staying with a friend that lives in the area and of course she's finding all the good spots! The first we tried it they gave us the wrong slice of cake but it was still delicious nonetheless. This time I actually got to go in myself since we came to meet her for dinner in the area. This place has everything!! Mexican cookies, panderia and delicious slices of CAKE!!! They also have a coffee bar as well, it's pretty much your one stop shop! You can get a nice slice of cake for $4.00! They don't skimp on the slice either, everything is very fresh and doesn't taste like it came from the grocery store or a box of cake batter LOL!
