Yihui is one of my go-to coffee spots for the studyability and their good quality coffee! They have a moderate number of tables along the wall with plenty of outlets and wifi available. Workers are always friendly and give great recommendations. I have been here numerous times, and my favorite items have been their lychee tonic (though on the pricier end for $9) and the Fist Bump (small black sesame breve), but I also love their hot flat white, as it has the balance of their strong and smooth espresso flavor with the perfect balance of milk. I have also enjoyed the Cloudy, which has subtle notes of red date and pear with a cream top. The drink was nicely balanced and not too sweet. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their coffee drinks, which have strong coffee notes. I also love their coffee cakes, which tend to sell out pretty quickly by midday. Yihui Coffee caught my attention due to its minimalist interior and selection of drink menus. The store is located on Garvey ave and could be easy to miss. I was in the area on a weekday and decided to stop by before work to grab a coffee. I went at around 8:30 AM and it was busy with many folks doing work. After looking at the menu, I had a hard time trying to figure out what to get given the selection! I asked for a recommendation between drinks and they mentioned if I want a hot drink - Miso White would be good; for a cold drink - Lychee Tonic would be ideal. It was a hotter day, so I opted for the Lychee Tonic. Since it was busy, the wait was ~ 10 minutes for the drink. After giving it a try, it tasted refreshing but I didn't really get the lychee taste. Not the best first impression with the tonic. However, I'd still consider coming back considering their ambience. Also absolutely interested to try their pour over options! Yihui is my go-to coffee spot when I'm in the area. I wish their cups were a tad bigger but overall Yihui is a quality coffee shop! I usually order the Cloudy or Fist bump. It seems like they switch off the flavor at times, but the Fist bump is the best black sesame coffee I've had! Cloudy is more of a refreshing tonic. They also offer pastries from Tropicana Bakery. It's a great case of less is more when you don't need a heavy sandwich but expect delicious clean flavor. Yihui Coffee is a study-friendly cafe, which meant it was hard to find a table upon arrival last Sunday afternoon. We had to stand around for 10-15 minutes before we got the next available table. My cousin and I ordered each ordered a pour over. I got a washed Ethiopian from BlendIn Coffee based in Houston, TX with yuzu tea and peach tasting notes. I enjoyed the citrus brightness of my pour over. The baristas at Yihui are pretty meticulous, and we received a coffee intro card with the coffee information, water temperature, and extraction time. The extra details were a nice touch. My cousin's Mexican pour over was on the nutty side. It was well-brewed, but not my favorite. Along with our coffees, we were given complimentary bites of pineapple cakes to enjoy. However, we both didn't like the after taste of the pastry, and left most of it. Coffee here is amazing. I ordered a decaf americano and was honestly impressed -- it's so hard to find a good decaf at cafes, but this one tasted just like a regular americano. If you prefer a richer matcha-to-milk ratio with a stronger tea flavor, this might not be your spot for matcha. The coffee here is exceptional especially the Cloudy! However, the Mist was disappointing. The Matcha was very weak and didn't taste ceremonial. The coconut water was refreshing but didn't taste like anything special so for $8, I felt this drink was overpriced and underwhelming. I was nearby for some breakfast and I actually discovered this coffee shop. I was intrigued with the menu it had some amazing choices and they are known for espresso by other people's recommendation. I did get a lychee espresso tonic which was really good and refreshing and it is really bubbly too. I also got a black sesame espresso drink and that was really nutty and earthy also it was very bold with a shot of espresso. The inside has a lot of seating and it is a minimal coffee shop. For the parking you do have to do street parking in the neighborhood. The service was friendly and they were able to help with questions and making my drinks less sweet. Personally, a very aesthetic pleasing coffee place that is simple and minimalistic in design without loud music or kids hanging around. I like the black, grey, and white monotone design. Its a millennial vibe coffee spot focusing on the quality of coffee. There is ample space and seating. Their staff was helpful in selecting a drink and I like how the coffee flavor notes are in the description. I got the Cloudy and it tasted great. Cute little cafe situated in a lowkey plaza. There is parking in the back but make sure you don't accidentally drive past it. Their interior is very modern and sleek with ample amount of seating to do some work at along with charging ports for your electronics. They specialize in coffee and their drinks are around $7-10. This is a hidden gem in the area for coffee enthusiasts. I've visited twice so far, and I'm really impressed. On my first visit, I tried the Cloudy, which has notes of red date, pear, and cream. Was excited to try this new Asian inspired coffee shop but was sad that it was a bit disappointing. Parking around here is street parking but it's not hard to find. The inside of the shop has a few medium tables with a good amount of seating and fast wifi to get work done. The service here unfortunately left quite a sour taste in my mouth. When I asked for recommendations, he refused to provide me with any and when asking about the matcha he responded "it tastes like matcha...nothing special." I ended up getting the matcha latte to try. He's right that it was standard - not that good but also not bad. I ordered the Cloudy ($7). It's iced coffee with cream, red dates, & pear. If you've tasted standard cold brew coffee, you can immediately imagine the Cloudy. This coffee is strong, chill, & slightly acidic. Its white top is thick, dense, & soft. When thoroughly mixed together, there's a welcomed balance. I arrived at Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park) on Thursday (around 12:50PM). Parking is plentiful; however, it's very hidden. The parking entrance is located on Moore Street, and customers will find a private parking lot behind Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park). When I spoke to Staff, they confirmed that the private parking lot is associated with their business. There's also no time limit. Staff is professional, welcoming, and hardworking. Staff (receipt says Yao) offered pleasant, efficient service. Yao offered the option for "To-Go" or "For Here." Since I selected "For Here," I received a glass cup for my beverage. My order took two minutes and 43 seconds. Very fast! As mentioned, I ordered the Cloudy ($7). It's presented attractively. The Cloudy ($7) contains a smooth burnt taste. The pear is very faint, but the dried bits of sprinkled red dates add texture & give much needed sweetness. The caffeine is standard, and the Cloudy feels like a functional, no-nonsense drink. Concerning ambiance, Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park) is a college student's paradise. The location has 10 electrical outlets for devices. These outlets even have usb ports for charging cables! The location also includes customer internet with password (displayed on counter's glass), and there's a gender neutral restroom. The location is very spacious with a very tall ceiling. There's also 10 tables inside with many seats. The music is also very soft, and the location resembles the atmosphere of a campus library. Customers almost appear hesitant to break the silence as they worked quietly on their devices. However, Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park) can get full very quickly. When I'd arrived, almost all their tables were in use. Luckily, I found a few seats. Also, Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park) is very minimalistic. Its interior is plain and somewhat ugly; it resembles a clearance outlet warehouse. Fortunately, the place is very clean, well-ventilated, and comfortable. Overall, Yihui Coffee (Monterey Park) offers functional coffee, comfortable work spaces, and professionalism. This cafe has been on my radar since it came up on my instagram feed. I love cafes and cafe culture so it was inevitable that I would visit. Food & Drink - 4/5 - I ordered the Cloudy later on, my friend and I split a filled doughnut and the tomato egg pastry. I enjoy the cream top that wasn't too sweet and wasn't too heavy. The tomato egg pastry was nice but a bit bland in my opinion. I think it could be seasoned a bit more. The filled doughnut was filled with fruity cream that was tart and not too sweet. My guess was the filling was passion fruit or pineapple flavor. I know that the pastries are sourced from another vendor and not made in house. Whoever made them had great ideas. Price - $$ - I would consider this a "overpriced novelty LA coffee shop" as it came out to be almost $8 a cup and about $7-8 per pastry. It is due to the novelty/specialty nature of this cafe. Whether or not this may seem worth it to you or not for this price point is subjective, but I would encourage at least trying it once if you have the chance or to use it as a treat yourself moment if you really love coffee. I'd like to think doing this is to support a small business. Service - 5/5 - The owner and staff are super sweet. They have a very friendly personality and are quite patient with questions. Currently still in soft opening, but Yihui is a welcome addition to the SGV area as we don't have too many coffee shops, This coffee shop is located on Garvey, taking over the spot of a former boba tea shop. They have a slow bar section which appears to be pour over coffees as well signature drinks and classic drinks. I opted to try the Cloudy $7 which is supposed to have red date, pear, and cream. I noticed that the order before me who also ordered Cloudy had a much darker base than I did. Overall the drink was decent but I didn't taste any red date or pear flavor - in fact, the coffee tasted kind of like regular black coffee with cream on top. Flavor wasn't bad, but I was hoping it would have more pear/date flavor. Also ordered the Island $7 - matcha and toasted coconut. Eh, I'm not a big coconut fan so I didn't care for this drink but I can see why people would enjoy it. There was a slight hint of coconut with every sip of the drink. Matcha flavor was good, not too heavy. Hoping they're still working out the kinks and getting all the drinks to be in order before they do a grand opening. This is a such niche and hidden away coffee spot. Quaint with small tables and chairs to build a small community of coffee lovers. At the same time we get a very minimalistic and modern spin on coffee flavors (Fist bump and Cloudy) is what I ordered. The flavor notes complements the coffee espresso extremely well. Some coffee with washed beans ushers in different flavors: nutty, fruity, floral or truffle-y. I like the truffle and the fruity (pear) undertones that the coffee provides. Each baristas are attentive and courteous. So we won't get a grumpy or someone that is just standing around. I would definitely take my family and friends here after a morning run or catching up.
