In our quest to find a good Chinese restaurant in the north side, I think we have a good one here. We came for dinner and got to park next door, nice given the neighborhood. We ordered the shu mai and XLB thinking they would be served first since they are listed as appetizers. Our mistake. also ordered the Singapore noodles and hong shu pork. The pork came out first with a couple bowls of short grain rice. Then a few minutes later the XLB arrived then the noodles then the Shu Mai arrived at the end. Next time I will let them know how I want them. THe pork was amazing just like I expected with melt in your mouth fat and nice tender lean meat. The XLB were okay. They didn't have the flavor and soup that I'm used to. You get 6 for $13. The noodles were good and had the flavor I was used to but it was short on the eggs and veggies I got used to living in the SF Bay area for 35 years. The Shu mai were huge, about twice the size of the dim sum version elsewhere. This is a popular place so reservations are probably best. We'll return for sure. read more

Came here on a whim with two friends of mine around 9:15pm on a Friday night. We know they close at 10pm so we ordered right away to not inconvenience them. We ordered 4 different plates including the La Mom Hong Sue Pork (Braised Pork Belly), the Shanghai-style Pork w/ veggie friend rice in Stone Pot, the Minced Pork w/ pickled long beans, and the La Mom Lo-Mien with Shrimp. Everything was excellent. I actually liked the Lo-Mien more than I thought I would but the true stand out dish here was the Braised Pork Belly. So delicious! We had gone to the original back in Bridgeport on Halsted but that was years ago and I believe this menu is very different. We were able to park in front of the "coming soon" market, but once that opens again consider asking the restaurant if it is ok to park behind the building where I believe the rest of the businesses in the area share parking. Quiet lunch time and it was just us but that's fine with us. Went ahead and picked the three star rec items off the menu that were interesting to us: egg with mushrooms from Anhui and the smashed eggplant with preserved egg. About the eggplant preserved egg dish - though our server gave it a mashing after bringing it to the table, it might have been difficult since things tend to overflow. So take a bit to start, then give it another mashing after there's room to spare. Has a bit of spice (it must have warned on the menu), but it is great. The egg dish - the mushroooms have a very subtle flavor. It's a $23 entree...but at least it is a good size serving. Interested in bringing more folks to share dishes so that we can try other "starred" dishes on the menu. read more

Great new spot in the neighborhood. The food was incredibly flavorful and came out so fast. And the staff was very helpful with finding just the right items. We had the dumplings in chili oil, cucumbers and garlic, twice cooked pork and chicken with chili pepper. Each item was done perfectly. I finally got a chance to stop in and try this spot and wow!, now wish I had done so sooner. The food was absolutely amazing...I had dumplings in chili oil, clay pot fried rice, grilled ribs, szechwan string beans, orange chicken. And it was all top notch....I now have zero reason to travel to chinatown...This spot is better than any restaurant there and I've eaten at just about every spot in Chinatown and Asia on argyle. Tried La Mom on April 6 2026 with four friends. Great food! Big portions, very good service. Really fine cuisine- super flavorful and presented very well. I had the shredded pork in garlic sauce and it was just the way I like it. Tender pork and a very savory sauce, with thin strips of red and green peppers for visual accent. A touch of hot spice but really pretty mild. I also had the hot and sour soup which was also topnotch. At my table diners had kung pao chicken and also someone had shrimp balls which were very cool looking and delicious. I WILL BE GOING BACK! Very reasonable prices. read more

Amazing Szechuan food. Very flavorful and great service. A little pricey at the individual dish level but well worth it. The Chili Pepper chicken was some of the best I have had. Lightly fried, intense spice level with great flavor. Dumplings in Chili oil were also great. Cute place inside. Not much has survived in this location so hoping they can. read more

We ordered braised pork belly, wonton soup , shrimp, crisp beef steak, lionhead meatball and and a bunch of sweet buns. They were all so good I felt like I was eating back in Shanghai. I went for an early afternoon lunch and ordered the walnut shrimp that they make very well here with a large number of jumbo shrimp (no tails). I didn't count how many, but certainly at least twelve and many roasted sugared walnuts. The honey mayonnaise sauce had considerably more honey than mayo - for my taste I would've preferred more mayo and less honey. I ordered it with a side of steamed broccoli that goes very well with it. I always bring several wedges of lemon that I like to sprinkle over the shrimp and broccoli that, imo, brings this dish to a whole new level. I also ordered an incredible beef hot pot that was brought to my table boiling hot - it had a number of vegetables, including very small long tiny mushrooms (sorry I don't know the name of these) and wood ear mushrooms. There were probably several other vegetables that were in it, but I don't remember which because it's been about two weeks since I went. They also served me steamed jasmine rice. The third item that I ordered was a steamed vegan dish consisting of lotus root, carrots, pea pods, onions, bean sprouts, mushrooms, and maybe one or two more. It was a healthy and delicious complement to the beef hot pot. This is not an inexpensive place, but I thought that the price for the food was reasonable given that the ingredients are high quality, expertly prepared, and I took some home that I enjoyed the following day. The servers were very hospitable and accommodating. They also didn't mind that I brought in my own Starbucks and a cold drink in my own personal bottle - I don't drink alcohol or conventional sodas that are high in sugar or diet sodas with artificial sweeteners. I did spend a significant amount on the food, however, that I'm sure was a trade off to my not ordering drinks from their menu. La Mom Kitchen has become one of my favorite restaurants in the Edgewater-Uptown neighborhood and look forward to enjoying many future meals there... read more

Very close by to where I live in Edgewater. I went with a friend for dinner on Easter. It's a beautiful clean new restaurant with great food. We loved it! They really did things right and have restaurants in LaGrange and Naperville too. The food is way above average, superior Chinese cuisine I believe. I think this is a smash hit for the neighborhood. We needed a good one Wing Ho closed and in my opinion the others around here are kinda dives. read more

The food is outstanding, a cut above other Asian restaurants. Everything made to order and really fresh and flavorful. Our group had two shrimp dishes and a pork one and they were all really good. Most excellent fried cheese wontons. We thought about getting the squirrel-shaped fish, but it has bones, so maybe next time. Really great value, in addition to being tasty, the portions are huge. Servers are attentive and friendly. They are on top of things yet, unobtrusive. The place is great if you want to talk. The sound level is perfect. The crowd looks to be young and trendy. Got chicken spring rolls, Sichuan green beans - they asked if I wanted pork which I thought was included but they charged me more than the menu stated, and Gen Tso's chicken. Chicken spring rolls - the filling was kinda mushy. I was expecting and hoping the green beans would be spicier, but I could have asked. The Gen Tso's chicken was the best dish of what I ordered, but not overwhelming. I live in the neighborhood so I'll try it again because of all the great ratings. What a great place! We were passing by (not even ready to eat) and had been intending to give La Mom Kitchen a try so we stopped for a "bite" that turned into a wonderful meal. Glad we did! You can tell that they take great pride in what they do. The service is fantastic. Everyone is so eager to help and very friendly. The food is GREAT! The way they fry their tofu is like no other. I'm not usually a reviewer but I wanted to put in a good word for this small business. This is potentially the best restaurant I've been to in Chicago. It looks a little pricey on the menu but be rest assured those prices are for at least 4 portions and the food is well worth it. I was completely blown away at the quality of the food. It was really good food. It was a little higher than my usual on the normal dishes but it is on Broadway, you know location equals higher rent and it is only about $3 more than my usual place on a lesser street. It is very clean and well st up. The menu is very extensive and had some items that I have never seen before. I had the tomato egg drop soup. It had have chunks of tomato in and was well worth having. I also had one of the lunch specials. The lunch specials are less expensive by far and a very nice deal I had the Mongolian beef and it had a lot of beef as well as onions. I love a lot of onions. Some of the things on the menu that I did not have this time but plan for the next time include Szechuan green beans. The photo looked very nice. I also want the stir fried lamb. The menu has a lot of Szechuan and Hunan dishes with the spiciness indicated so nobody is surprised. They also have a fair amount of vegetarian items. The lunch special includes an egg roll and some very well presented rice, not a clump like you get some places. They seem to care about the service and the food andthat is something that I look for. Pretty disappointed. Food was ok but the worst was how the staff laughed and judged the customers thinking that they couldn't understand what they were saying in Chinese. Then a woman came in and they refused her service because she had limited English speaking skills. Say "you must speak English" over and over again until she got fed up and walked out. Excellent service, beautiful clean restaurant, food is outstanding and portions are generous. I ordered two entrees: Mongolian beef and Walnut Shrimp, plus the tomato egg drop soup. The large soup bowl was easily enough for three small bowls - a smaller size was not offered; the Mongolian beef was properly prepared in the traditional way, including crunchy white rice threads, though the beef was a bit tough; the Walnut Shrimp, a favorite dish I've had in a number of restaurants, was the absolute best I've ever had with a generous portion of extra-large shrimp - I requested a side of steamed broccoli for a $3 charge. I brought my own beer in my hydration bottle. An excellent experience overall - will definitely be back for another delightful Walnut Shrimp and to sample some of their other dishes! We visited La Min Kitchen for the first time last night. We had here dishes and they were all very good. We had the bao appetizer which was delicious and juicy. We had the twice cooked pork which had a great flavor. We also had the spicy boiled fish which was good and more adventurous but too spicy for me. The service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. It was also BYOB and no corkage fee so that was a big plus. Highly recommend. A nice add to the neighborhood. read more
