Ask for the authentic menu!!! Went with a friend from Shanghai who knew about the authentic menu and helped us order! Everything we ordered from that menu (pork belly, mushroom and tofu casserole, stir fried rice cakes) was absolutely delicious! The salt and pepper fish was a normal menu item, I believe, and was perfect - so crispy and tasty. The tempura scallop sushi roll was ok. Not very crispy or flavorful. We ordered several dishes off the Shanghai food menu - Jellyfish & daikon, crab in wine, stir fry eel, drunken fish fillet, Shanghai pork soup, and pork & veggie rice. Portion was really big and those dishes should easily serve 4 people. However, Shanghai pork soup has very little pork, tofu skin or bamboo and every dish is just too salty. Being a Shanghainese and having a mom who cooks fantastic Shanghai food, I can't say the food here was bad, but I can't justify myself paying to eat Shanghai food here. read more

Back again for another Shine update... this place really deserves a higher rating :). We've gotten Shine 3/4 times just in the last month and a half.. and every time it has been great! No issues with the order in a while, and the front desk hostess is always SUCH a ray of light! So sweet and knowledgeable. My favorite roll is still the Akuma Maki.... you just gotta try it. My new other favorite roll is the Tochigi Maki which is a spicy tuna roll wrapped in slices of mango and avocado with a sweet and spicy sauce- OMG. It is so good?! I don't know how Shine has all these delectable glazes/sauces for their rolls.. but it just works. My order of course isn't complete without the crab rangoon too... I devour all four with the sweet and sour sauce, quickly. :) All in all... this will continue to be one of my favorite take-out sushi spots. read more

We had a party of 3 and sat inside, but their doors were open so we were able to get the summer breeze from outside. We ordered family style so we could all have a taste of multiple dishes. For appetizers we ordered the crab rangoons and fresh duck wraps. I definitely recommend the duck wraps! They were the perfect bite and the plum sauce that accompanied them had a great sweet and tangy flavor. For mains we ordered vegetable soft noodles, lemongrass chicken, and red snapper with green string beans. The vegetable noodles were average. I would probably try a different noodle dish next time. The lemongrass chicken had good flavor, but I wish they gave more chicken instead of vegetables. The standout dish was definitely the red snapper! Great flavor and the fish was soft and fresh. I wanted to order green tea mochi at the end of the meal, but they had run out so we skipped dessert. They have a pretty big menu so I'll have to dine here again to try more dishes. Sesame chicken is my barometer for Chinese restaurants so I had to try it. There was plenty of chicken but it wasn't crispy and was slightly above room temperature when brought out. Just enough sweetness in the sauce which was also very thin. The broccoli was steamed nicely and was spread throughout the dish. I was starving so I scarfed it all down, but this was not one of the better sesame chickens I've had. read more

This is a review for the Shanghainese food not sushi! My parents are from Shanghai so they always miss the food from there, and this is probably one of the most authentic places I've been to in Chicago. You have to call in a few days ahead in order to get the special dishes, since they need time to source ingredients. We over ordered in the classic Asian potluck manner, but everything was delicious! My favorites were the crispy spring rolls with vinegar, glutinous rice stuffed lotus root, young pea shoots, and sweet and sour fried fish. A lot of the dishes I'm not sure what the english translations are! There was even a dessert of glutinous rice balls with fermented rice, so good! Service was wonderful, and our families had a great time there despite being picky with Chinese restaurants. Definitely will be back again! read more

We've been eating a lot of sushi and sashimi lately and Shine plays a special role in our "rotation" along with Toro, Komorebi, and Tanoshi as well as new faves in the "value" category such as Lawrence Fish Market and especially Joong Boo Market on Friday nights. Shine is a perfectly good neighborhood sushi spot with a BIG secret which makes it different than the rest. Shine also serves great authentic Shanghai-style Chinese food. The real deal. I'm posting the secret menu here but don't tell anyone! Shine wants you to order it on WeChat which caters to Chinese audiences but who has that? Very hard to download and order. So I just got them to text it to me and I called in the order. A taste of Shanghai. Whoa. New York may be the city that never sleeps, but Shanghai doesn't even sit down, and not just because there is no room. Best thing we ordered was Eggplant and Pork, Drunk Chicken, and Shanghai Vegetables. Sea bass and Shanghai noodles were more ordinary. Still, give it a try. Fellow Yelpers say the crab in wine sauce is very authentic. Maybe one day we'll try the steamed turtle. Or maybe never! Still, lots to explore here if you want more than take out sushi. read more

Shine far exceeded our expectations. The food and service was excellent. Tuk our waitress was so fun and pleasant, her Thai background shined thru. For starters, We had two of the special sushi rolls, and all four of us loved them, as well as the vegetarian spring rolls too. The Tokyo Mule and Margaritas were very good too. For dinner we had the teriyaki grill which included ample veggies and crispy grilled tofu, hot pot with shrimp in a spicy panang curry, mom had some excellent garlic prawns, and dad loved the green curry with beef. I visited Shine after hearing about their secret Shanghainese menu. You do have to order ahead of time for this menu. As someone who was born in Shanghai and try to visit every couple of years, I was excited to try Shanghainese food in Chicago as it's a cuisine I miss often. We ordered the: - Drunk Chicken - Lotus Roots - Pork Soup - Mixed celery and cashews - Pork belly with preserved vegetables The best dish was the pork belly which was rendered well and well-balanced with the preserved vegetables. The rest was a mixed bag, we liked the lotus roots and mixed celery but the drink chicken was try and lacked flavor and the pork soup contained very little bamboo and tofu knots and instead of pieces of very fatty pork which were hard to eat. I will likely come back to try the other dishes as the menu reminds me of good home cooked Shanghainese dishes so fingers crossed. read more

Shine is now one of my favorite casual eateries. The restaurant is well kept and clean, the servers are some of the most upbeat I've seen. I had a lovely time with my friend and am looking forward to coming back. We shared two rolls, taro fries, and the Singapore noodles. I'm always a sucker for Singapore noodles and had not seen it in chicago often, so I was very excited when I saw it on the menu. Similarly, I've never seen taro fries here, so I knew we needed to order them. My favorite of the meal had to be those fries -- they were light and not heavy on seasoning, allowing for pure taro root flavor. The curry aioli was a perfect sauce. For our rolls, we shared the Akuma and Kadamao rolls. We chose them because they were pretty interesting and not ones we've seen in other restaurants, so why not give them a go? The Akuma roll was sweet with pecans and was a great roll to finish off the meal, while the Kadamao was filling. I'm not sure if I'll order these rolls again but I was definitely making sure every piece was finished. read more

I loved Shine Rise and it was cool to see that they have an authentic Shanghai cuisine menu. Really talented sushi chefs and we had some really good nigiri. Rolls are good too, their flaming maki was awesome. Service was on point, we went on a slow day but they were attentive. Try their Dungeness crab, but for Shanghainese menu items you have to call 24 hours in advance for preparation. Also get some nigiri, and the lychee martini. Fantastic and will go back. read more

I came here last week to celebrate my friend's baby shower and we reserved a private room for a large group of about 15 people. My friend comes here every time they have something to celebrate, and I can see why now! This is the most authentic Shanghainese food I've had outside of Shanghai. My friend ordered the food (about 15 dishes total) several days beforehand, which is required if you're ordering from the "Secret menu", which is only available in full via WeChat. Our food arrived very quickly, one after another, and we were all stuffed at the end of our massive feast. Portion sizes are generous. My favorite dishes, without giving away too much of this "secret menu", included the "mock tofu", drunken chicken (SO tender and flavorful), braised pork belly, and bok choy rice. We ended the meal with a sweet dessert soup with tiny mochi balls. Every dish was delectable, not too salty, and done so, so well! I didn't try the egg rolls but I think that is one of my friend's favorite things to order. I'm definitely coming back here the next time I'm in town. read more

First time at Shine -- so far so good! We had a DELICIOUS dinner. Their coconut milk soup is fantastic. I mean, one of the best-tasting in Chicago. I used to live in the area, and ordered Shine for takeout pretty often, and it was always good! Last Friday night I found myself back in the neighborhood with a few friends and we decided to dine in! The lovely hostess greeted us, and we decided to take a seat outside. They have an extensive menu, and after consulting with my party (as well as checking Yelp for suggestions) we decided to order family style and share a variety of dishes. We ordered the Singapore noodles with beef, which were excellent. The beef was flavorful and tender. The Kung Pao chicken, which came in a tangy spicy szechwan sauce with peanuts and vegetables. And a few sushi rolls, one being the Flaming Maki, which came with a flame shooting up from the middle of the dish. The roll was fresh tasting, while still having a bit of heat from the baked spicy salmon on top. While I don't live in the are anymore, I would definitely come back to Shine.
