    Mushroom and tofu casserole
    Alyssa J.

Ask for the authentic menu!!! Went with a friend from Shanghai who knew about the authentic menu and helped us order! Everything we ordered from that menu (pork belly, mushroom and tofu casserole, stir fried rice cakes) was absolutely delicious! The salt and pepper fish was a normal menu item, I believe, and was perfect - so crispy and tasty. The tempura scallop sushi roll was ok. Not very crispy or flavorful. I would not order any sushi next time. We had a group of 8 and sat comfortably and the ambience was nice! Looking forward to my next visit

We ordered several dishes off the Shanghai food menu - Jellyfish & daikon, crab in wine, stir fry eel, drunken fish fillet, Shanghai pork soup, and pork & veggie rice. Portion was really big and those dishes should easily serve 4 people. However, Shanghai pork soup has very little pork, tofu skin or bamboo and every dish is just too salty. Being a Shanghainese and having a mom who cooks fantastic Shanghai food, I can't say the food here was bad, but I can't justify myself paying to eat Shanghai food here.

Green String Bean with red snapper

We had a party of 3 and sat inside, but their doors were open so we were able to get the summer breeze from outside. We ordered family style so we could all have a taste of multiple dishes. For appetizers we ordered the crab rangoons and fresh duck wraps. I definitely recommend the duck wraps! They were the perfect bite and the plum sauce that accompanied them had a great sweet and tangy flavor. For mains we ordered vegetable soft noodles, lemongrass chicken, and red snapper with green string beans. The vegetable noodles were average. I would probably try a different noodle dish next time. The lemongrass chicken had good flavor, but I wish they gave more chicken instead of vegetables. The standout dish was definitely the red snapper! Great flavor and the fish was soft and fresh. I wanted to order green tea mochi at the end of the meal, but they had run out so we skipped dessert. They have a pretty big menu so I'll have to dine here again to try more dishes. Overall, good food and great service.

    Sesame Roast

Sesame chicken is my barometer for Chinese restaurants so I had to try it. There was plenty of chicken but it wasn't crispy and was slightly above room temperature when brought out. Just enough sweetness in the sauce which was also very thin. The broccoli was steamed nicely and was spread throughout the dish. I was starving so I scarfed it all down, but this was not one of the better sesame chickens I've had.

    Akuma roll

I got takeout but the restaurant definitely looked like a spot I'd like to dine in at some point and the staff was very friendly. I heard of it because of the Shanghai menu so will have to return for that but was in the area craving sesame chicken so got the Akuma roll and sesame chicken. The sesame chicken was a bit bland but still decent. The roll was AMAZINGsuwould definitely get it again and would love to try some of the other sushi options.

This is a review for the Shanghainese food not sushi! My parents are from Shanghai so they always miss the food from there, and this is probably one of the most authentic places I've been to in Chicago. You have to call in a few days ahead in order to get the special dishes, since they need time to source ingredients. We over ordered in the classic Asian potluck manner, but everything was delicious! My favorites were the crispy spring rolls with vinegar, glutinous rice stuffed lotus root, young pea shoots, and sweet and sour fried fish. A lot of the dishes I'm not sure what the english translations are! There was even a dessert of glutinous rice balls with fermented rice, so good! Service was wonderful, and our families had a great time there despite being picky with Chinese restaurants. Definitely will be back again!

    Secret Shanghai-style menu
    Alan D.

We've been eating a lot of sushi and sashimi lately and Shine plays a special role in our "rotation" along with Toro, Komorebi, and Tanoshi as well as new faves in the "value" category such as Lawrence Fish Market and especially Joong Boo Market on Friday nights. Shine is a perfectly good neighborhood sushi spot with a BIG secret which makes it different than the rest. Shine also serves great authentic Shanghai-style Chinese food. The real deal. I'm posting the secret menu here but don't tell anyone! Shine wants you to order it on WeChat which caters to Chinese audiences but who has that? Very hard to download and order. So I just got them to text it to me and I called in the order. A taste of Shanghai. Whoa. New York may be the city that never sleeps, but Shanghai doesn't even sit down, and not just because there is no room. Best thing we ordered was Eggplant and Pork, Drunk Chicken, and Shanghai Vegetables. Sea bass and Shanghai noodles were more ordinary. Still, give it a try. Fellow Yelpers say the crab in wine sauce is very authentic. Maybe one day we'll try the steamed turtle. Or maybe never! Still, lots to explore here if you want more than take out sushi.

    Yellow Dal and Chenna
    Ken T.

Good food (took a little time to bring it out) but overall good portions. I'd probably suggest the naan versus roti though -- we ordered roti and they were okay. The chola and dal we ordered both good though. Worth stopping by for sure.

    Pink tempura, California roll, edamame

I loved the food and the service. Everyone was super nice! After six bites of shrimp I was full! Everything was great as always!

Was at Taste of Randolph with a big group of friends and had to sneak off for a solo mission to get Okonomiyaki! Even though everywhere was insanely busy the host at Gaijin was so accommodating and sat me at the Chef's table. I was on a slight time restraint so I wasn't gone too long before my friends realized I was missing. The waitress was so nice and I was able to put in an order for a Highball and Pork Okonomiyaki very fast. Sipping on a Highball while watching the food cooking up in the kitchen captured the exact vibe I missed from Japan. The Pork Okonomiyaki was unreal! A taste and quality I never thought I would be able to get back home. Sweet, Savory, Umami, all the flavors that make them so addictive. I can't wait to return and bring friends. They have Hiroshima style with the yakisoba which I also miss from my travels there. We are going to have to order multiple of everything. & MUST try their donuts, they look dangerously good.

The matcha kakkigori also wasn't shaved fine enough to keep the ice from melting into Hawaiian style shaved ice. The Osaka style beef and traditional Hiroshima style yaki saved the meal enough to enjoy ourselves though, and were very flavorful. The restaurant itself is tucked right behind Morgan station but is so much bigger inside. The furniture and even dishware also felt like they were picked very intentionally to complement the grilling plates. The layout of the restaurant means it can be great for really any kind of occasion or group size.

It's crazy it's completely died down by the time we were finished with our meal. The service was great, the interior decor was beautiful and the staff was friendly. The dim sum offered for brunch was good as well but pricey. Especially since some dishes were only offered with two pieces. If you have a party of three then you're kind of forced into buying two of the same dishes. Which is strange. Traditionally most dim sum dishes have three pieces. Rarely see 2 pieces being offered especially for double the price. We ordered their Jiaozi, Char Sui Bao, crab Rangoon, chilly chilli noodles, and their Xiang long Bao. All were great. The chilly chilli noodles is served cold and was very flavorful. The Xiang Kong Bao was amazing. The potstickers was probably my favorite dish and it's mess up char Sui Bao. We were going to order wings but they had ran out I guess by 12pm on a Sunday. I was also going to order fried rice but it wasn't offered for brunch. Overall despite the priciness of the menu, we still enjoyed our food and the service. I obviously knew what I was getting myself into by visiting this place, and can definitely see myself returning in the future.

My favorite sushi roll was the Panda Roll because it included shrimp tempura and was drizzled with a combo of sweet and spicy sauces. The Sake to Me roll was also good, but I could have used some soy sauce to mix with the wasabi for additional flavor. The pad Thai had solid flavor, and I appreciated how it did not skimp on the protein. The vibes were super cute, the rooftop atmosphere was really nice, and the energy definitely felt more like happy hour/girls night than an intimate date night. One thing to know they are VERY strict about reservation timing, so definitely make sure you arrive on time. Once we got seated though, the service was honestly incredible. Our server checked in on us multiple times throughout the night and was so friendly and attentive the entire experience. For drinks, I got the "Liar Liar" cocktail because the coconut cream sounded good, but it ended up being a little too bitter for my personal taste. My friend ordered the espresso martini and wasn't really feeling that one either, BUT my other friend got the lychee martini (which I think is one of their popular drinks) and she was absolutely obsessed with it. The real standout for me was the dessert. We ordered this espresso martini-inspired dessert and it was honestly TO DIE FOR. Probably my favorite thing we had all night. So rich and delicious. I also really appreciated that when making the reservation, we mentioned we were celebrating a birthday, and they actually acknowledged it by bringing out a cute little dessert plate with mochi ice cream and strawberries. Small touches like that always make the experience feel more special. Parking was actually pretty doable for the area, which was nice. Overall I'd give it a solid 4/5.
