Came here for Chinese New Year dinner with a huge group and had a great time. The ambiance was great, restaurant was good about setting aside the space for our group. The food arrive pretty promptly - we had quite a huge variety of food from apps to main ones. Most dishes were presented well and tasty. Really like the soup they gave out in duck - highly recommended! The only reason they are not getting four or five star is because every single dish was ok the saltier side. I don't know why Chinese restaurants seem to be always on the side of saltiness...was hoping that Shine would be better than that, but alas! If you plan ahead, order their duck stuffed with rice. They make one of those per day and it was well cooked (also salty so ask for less salt) and the rice had all the flavor of the duck inside. This restaurant consistently provides five-star service and food every time you visit! Today we had Aaron who went above and beyond your typical waiter duties and was so kind and accommodating! The portions are absolutely massive and delicious! The restaurant has a lovely decor and everyone who works there is so friendly! Went here once as a non-sushi liker, but was told by my friend I wouldn't be let down. He was absolutely right. I tried the Flaming Maki, and it was incredible. There's a large menu with tastes for everybody (even non-sushi people like me!) Not only do they have sushi, but they also have many other dishes that will satisfy everybody. Honestly, Shine deserves 3.5 stars. The service was excellent. Servers were friendly and on top of things. Water was refilled before it was necessary. The decor is clean and pretty modern. No frills. I ordered the sesame chicken and enjoyed it. I think the breading-to-meat ratio was a bit off. The broccoli was nice and crisp - a contrast to many Chinese places. I asked for more sauce so I could add some flavor to my rice and they whipped up a fresh bowl in minutes. That was great. The vegetable dumplings were pretty bland, but the dipping sauce they had helped add some zing. Prices seemed a little high for the amount of food we got. Shine is good, and I may return, but I don't know that I'd go out of my way for it. read more

This is probably the worst restaurant I have eaten at in a very long time. I have experienced sushi restaurants in the hundreds and this was probably the worst in quality and value. I got the Chef Special. 4 pieces of nigiri, 3 sashimi, and a California roll. At $32.00 for these few pieces must be good, it's the chef special. How wrong I was. The nigiri was loaded with rice with a thin slice of fish on top. Sashimi was an absolute joke. I have seen larger pieces in a buffet. Looked as if it was the scraps or a sampler to eat off a toothpick. Lastly was the California roll, normally don't eat them but it came with it. Bland and tasteless. How do you mess up the most basic roll?! Not to mention it looked like it was rolled by a toddler. Presentation on everything was atrocious, part of the reason you go to a sushi restaurant. If you want sushi, stay very far away from the restaurant. Almost feels like a scam for the uneducated sushi eater. Disappointed! I have been a client for almost 5y,ordering religiously every Friday, sometimes 2 times a week! But lately the quality is not there. Is in a more pricey side, and was okay until the quality started being the same as the one you get at the grocery store! More rice than anything. Pleasant experience discovered at Shines Restaurant yesterday. Started with warm wash clothes for hands. Nice ambience, we were seated inside with open wall to patio. Very relaxing and great location on Halsted. Dinner was delicious. Had Shrimp Pad Thai and had a sushi roll. The pad thai was balanced with the proper amount of shredded cucumber and had a light flavor shrimp medium sized tasty as well. Sushi roll had some pecans on top and was on the sweeter side but was very likeable also. I liked it very much there and would definitely return. I used to really love Shine and took so many friends there. The food remains great. Unfortunately, the hostess (who is the daughter of the owner) is rude to customers, fellow staff, and her position as "owner" allows her, in her mind, to treat guests as expendable. Most recently, as my fiancee and I realized that Shine could not seat us, we turned to leave and she shouted in front of the restaurant but at our backs "oh yeah? Well, we won't miss your business!" A waitress outside was as horrified as we were, and asked us to come inside for her to apologize. Her "apology" cited that it had been a "really hard week for America." I ordered Shine every weekend of quarantine but with the service they provide, I would not recommend supporting this business. As she said, your business will not be missed. read more

After a grueling workout we were HUNGRY!! We had never heard of this place, but it was conveniently right around the corner from the gym. Ummm what a hidden (at least from me) gem. I'll be the first to admit Asian food is not my number one cuisine choice, but maybe it's because I've been going to mediocre places. The items we tried here were delicious. We shared the crab Rangoon as a starter. I love me some crab Rangoon and it was yummy! For my meal I had the orange flavored beef and broccoli. Yummy and bursting full of flavor! My friend had the scallop sushi and she said it was heavenly. My other friend had the chicken lettuce wraps and her only complaint was she needed more lettuce, but still really tasty. I also love love they have outdoor seating! Seriously just by having outdoor seating you will get a star from me. With these crazy cold Chicago winters outdoor seating wins me over every time. Not a fan Maybe it's because I don't really like Rise either, but this place doesn't do it for me. I got a gift certificate here so I've carried out a few times because I hate to let good money to go to waste. First, what's with the soy sauce? I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but it's terrible. I don't know what kind it is since it comes in a plastic container. I ate about half of my order before tossing the soy and using some of the low sodium Yamasa I had in the fridge. The new soy sauce definitely elevated the taste of my meal - it went from bleh to so-so. Second, again I find there rolls not spicy at all and when they chop up the fish it's hard to tell how much fish they're actually giving me. Bottom line: I won't be back unless someone else is buying and even then I'm going cast my vote for somewhere other than here. read more

For dining in, takeout or delivery this place scores on all fronts. I've been going on and off to Shine since they opened their doors on Armitage nearly 20 years ago. The stir fries come in a lighter sauce which makes the cashew chicken one of my favorites. The sushi is also a good go to - recently trying out the range of cooked sushi options while I'm pregnant all of which have been tasty (dragon roll, veggie rolls, etc) The restaurant itself is upscale enough for a date, while online ordering makes pickup or delivery a breeze. Everything was delicious but it was just on the pricey side. A nigiri is like $4.50 compared to other places it's usually $3.

I usually LOVE this restaurant and they're some of the nicest people, but tonight when I called about a delivery ETA I was hung up on. The hostess then told me that she was too busy for delivery inquiries and it "hasn't been an hour yet"... some of the worst customer service I've experienced. It's hard to find quality Chinese food in the city, but Shine is excellent! Not to mention their sushi is also delicious.

I'm usually wary of "Asian fusion" type restaurants like Shine who serve two or more different kinds of Asian cuisine...in Shine's case it's Japanese, Chinese, and Thai. Usually the food at these fusion restaurants are bland, carb and cornstarch loaded, and only bear a remote resemblance of the fine dishes they attempt to mimic. However, in the case of Shine, I believe the chef has stepped up his game and although I was not completely blown away by the dishes we ordered, I have no complaints about them either, and in fact most of the dishes were enjoyable and the portions generous. Tuna tartare - We ordered this upon recommendation by our sever. Simply outstanding. Fresh cubes of tuna (large serving by the way), cilantro, and a lovely sesame sauce that really made the dish. In fact, what made the dish even more fun was placing as many cubes of tuna on the paper thin won tons (I much prefer this style rather than the thick won ton style) before the chip breaks. I highly recommend this dish! House salad - This salad was a lot bigger than we expected. I ton of lettuce and a nice ginger dressing...although I wanted a more! Sushi - We ordered the salmon avocado roll and the negi hamachi roll. Both were good. Although they were not wrapped as tightly as I would have expected, the fish was fresh, avocado plentiful, and the rolls were much larger than you would get at most sushi restaurants. Definitely a good value in my opinion. Singapore rice noodle - Craving a noodle dish, we asked our server for a recommendation and she pointed us in this direction. This may have been the 3rd or 4th on my list to order, but we went with her rec anyway. Surprisingly this was a great dish. Although it was not the most authentic and the chef had taken some liberties on sweetening the curry sauce and adding a cuts of chicken thigh. The noodles were good and the dish came together well. I would call this comfort style Singapore rice noodles. Overall we really enjoyed our meal. What made it sweeter was our 30% off from Village Vines! This was our first visit to Shine and I definitely think we will be coming back for more. read more

Food- pretty good! we got the chilean sea bass- my favorite! a couple of sushi rolls, normal but i will say they were pretty messily made. and then we also got the Hamachi Carpaccio which was just excellent and delicious! they also have a very good selection of hot, cold, sushi, and bigger meals even beyond the standard udon/ teriyaki. drinks- terrible. i got the almond tini, and my husband got the carpinhini- both just tasted like cough syrup. I'm in b/t a 3 and 4 b/c the sushi was a little messy and the drinks were terrible, the food food was really good. What ended up tipping the scale to three was that the table was dirty which made me question the sanitation. there was all this red sticky stuff on the table and then my husband had all these sesame seeds stuck to his arm... and none of our food had sesame seeds (including the sushi). read more
