I called today to see if they had tamales for pick up and being Im at work and we wanted to pick up 4 dozen for staff, the gentle who said he was the owner was very rude to me and said they would not hold any. I also wanted to ask when the deadline to order tamales for Christmas would be and again continued to be rude to me and said for me not to be self-centered when I was asking when was the deadline how to go about an ordering it he said he was too busy and then he didn't even need to answer the phone he could've letit go to voice mail. You should have let it go to voicemail instead of being short tempered and rude to customers.. I hope this poor attitude and anger isn't also giving out to the employees, I would hate to be working for a man like this.. read more

Went in this morning and the customer service from the young man in taking my pot and adding the menudo, and the tamales ....came out and asked me for anything else and rang me up...the two young ladies doing the same with other customers.... And the menudo was delicious, and both the red/green pork tamales were yum! read more

This used to be my go to bakery for everything mexican. No mas. I came in today to buy a few things. Their Carnitas are delicious and moist. Their rolls are soft, big fluffy. Still awesome. I decided to buy a few pieces of pan Dulce. Huge mistake. First, it didn't look right to me. I bought it anyway. I came home to eat it. OMG Vomit! The absolute worse ever. Both pieces were hard as rocks. They tasted like too much baking powder was used. Horrible! I am so disappointed. Time to find a new source for pan Dulce because this place isn't it anymore. Their bread's good. But can't say the same about the tamales, super small dry and weird taste almost like a bitter taste, ordered 6 beef.. bag felt light so I had to double check there was really 6 in there! There was 6 tiny tamales :/ Won't be ordering those from here anymore read more

I placed an order for Christmas because of the social media "hype" and unfortunately was unable to pick up the 4 dozens because we were on a mandatory quarantine. I tried calling but the call wouldn't go through so I DMd then. I was told the order was cancelled and they would refund the $87. I admit I chose to not show up despite not having symptoms because it's a food establishment and I thought they would be understanding but they then said they could not do refund and blocked me on social media. The tamales here are delicious, but boy have they shrunk. I love a good green chili tamale but who ever makes the green chili chicken ones must be mad, they make it way too spicy to really enjoy. I love spicy but this is way too hot! The carnitas here are delicious, and so is the pan dulce. The one thing I hate to see is all the hunting pictures that are hanging on the wall by the cashier. All these innocent animals killed for what reason. I think those kind of pictures shouldn't be posted in a business but that's just me. read more

I have been coming this this place for at least 30 years! I no longer reside in the area but I have family that does and any weekend I am visiting, I will come to La Moderna. It's located in a very old dingy looking strip mall and you have to look REALLY close because it just blends in. However, on any Saturday or Sunday morning you will find a line out the door. Especially now due to COVID they only allow a few customers in their already small bakery. The line does go quickly and they have several people taking orders. Their pan dulce is delicious! Baked fresh and soft. The have traditional cookies, empanadas and "corns". IDK what the real name is but they are the breads that look like cornucopia shape. They also have delicious tamales and a wide variety (green, cheese, red, etc). In addition, they are also known for their carnitas, chicharrones and menudo. During holiday weekends they often sell out of tamales and menudo. I've been coming here for over half my life and it's in the same building, zero upgrades (LOL) but same great quality! read more

The tamales are delicious but this customer service and disorganized system do not work in addition to them running out of cheese tamales. Customers have all paid for something they can not fulfill. The salsa and guacamole that can be ordered by the pint were very flavorful. There's a minimal selection of tortillas and chips but they have staple brands. There is also a selection of pan dulce. I tried the powdered sugar star which was adequately good. I was disappointed to see as I paid an homage to killing defenseless animals and really disappointed in seeing something so brutal. Truth is I was becoming a real fan of their salsa. But one has to have morals and I don't want my money to fund something so sickening. Other people won't care. I know that. I needed go to for Christmas tamales, after moving Back from Temecula, year ago. Heard about la Moderna bakery, Sadly booked for Christmas orders so I ordered for New Years pick up time 7am as I heard wait and Line long. Total was 84.00 for dozen cheese dozen pork red Dozen green pork. When arrived line was about two store lengths long The young girls were doing their best and a women with her hair up and turtle neck sweater and apron giving strict orders , "but X on bag when special orders "while just walking back and fourth. All front help and bakery staff rushing to put things out. Packaged in brown bags labeled nice and warm Ordered few bakery items which you get yourself With tong. The tamales were just ok, I make better myself , just didn't have time. Will I ever go back,sadly no , honestly I don't know what all the long lines was for , they weren't even spicy, not even tasty...maybe the staff should try one during Christmas this year and see they were nothing special. read more

Their carnitas, salsita, and tamales not to mention the sweet bread conchas are a must! The service is A+ and now they take card not just ATM WHICH IS A HUGE PLUS!! The ambiance of the place is old school panaderia and tortilleria that reminds me that I ave been coming here since I was like 5 or 6 with my mama. Yes I have seniority and I'm sure many of us Pico and Whittier peoples do. It's simply the place to get your Mexican staple fix for family, gatherings, and holidays and frankly any day every weekend. I've been coming to this Bakery for over 36 years and have even recommend it to family and friends but the quality of food is not what it used to be. Attached is a photo of the excessive amount of flavorless masa that was in my 2 cheese tamales not to mention the little log of what looks like tofu in the middle which is supposed to be cheese. I know that my review will not even put a dent in the amount customers they have. This review is not to have people stop going there but in hope of some much needed improvement. This place is a hit and a miss. Sometimes the tamales are good and their are times the tamales are full of fat. I pay for pork tamales, not a tamale full of fat. I bet if the owner and his son and the rest of his family went to a nice restaurant and ordered steaks, but instead they were served a fatty piece of meat. The fluffiest and warmest bolillos I've had from any bakery in Whittier. I am not a fan of tamales nor carnitas, but this place makes me crave them ever since I tried them from this place. The tamales are small and tasteful. They don't make you feel like you need a drink when you eat them. They've been opened for years. More people need to go and support this business. I ordered tamales after Thanksgiving since they sell fast. My pick up date was Dec.23, when i received the tamales, they were warmed, after i opened one the tamale it was not fully cooked, actually several of them were not fully cooked. Question why would they sell them like that? gave them plenty, plenty of time to cook them. Not only that but they do charge alot for those tamales i ended up throwing them away ($$money down the drain). Also, there menudo is awsome but why do you never have pata, it doesnt matter what time of the day you go they always say "ran out" and i think the girls there should smile more. read more
