This place has a great and fresh selection of pan dulce. It's always busy and has a high turnover, unlike some of the other local places. I love love love their tamales over all else. My favorite thing to do is come in and grab a dozen of the green chili and cheese tamales with a large champurrado, so so good. This combo always hits the spot, especially on a cold morning. Plus the large champurrado is enough to share between two of us, it works out well. Their other tamale flavors are good too, but their green chili is the best. This was always the go to place for fresh homemade tamales. They always tasted as close as possible to grandmas. However, today I went in and the price increased and the quality was not the sam. The size has significantly decreased and the flavor was off. It almost had a burnt chili flavor for the red beef. I also bit into a bone for the red pork. Please don't fix what isn't broke. Update 12/22/18: PayPal approved my dispute and the transaction is closed. I will receive a refund shortly. This still doesn't put the tamales I ordered in my family's stomach. To ensure I was not mistaken when I purchased the tamales, I went back to La Moderna's website to see if their claim of not holding onto orders past the selected date and time was posted on their site. On the contrary, the only warning listed is "Orders only guarantee tamales not your place in line." False. I was apparently guaranteed nothing. Screenshot of that and my PayPal transaction being closed added to this review. Bottom line: My order was paid for in full and you sold it anyway. So my family used to come here for pan dulce, menudo, carnitas and tamales when the original people owned it. Customer service was great and the elderly couple were sweet and humble. Now I think the second generation is running the bakery and the older woman who runs the counter has the worst customer service I've ever encountered at a Mexican owned bakery. You can smell the delicious bakery breads that are made fresh, you can also smell the tamales, carnitas, menudo, and all the other delicious foods made there!! We love this place have come here for years but since the son took over the level of service from him is trash. He's super rude, totally disrespectful it's completely unnecessary. All the other workers there are amazing . Went to pick up our order used the online app to place it never received the confirmation email went on the date to pick up was told I had been scheduled for a previous date. All the other workers tried to help but of course the son steps in taking over the ladies basically telling me to cancel and he couldn't help. Again the women tried to help me telling me to come back at 7 and they thought they could get my order together again he talks over them inserting himself into a conversation that had nothing to do with him saying he wasn't going to argue just being a jerk. I waited 45 minutes to get in the door it's always like that at Christmas I know the drill weve done it for years but he's letting his homies come in and out the entire time to grab orders guess one of them that went out the door was mine. This was my third time placing an order with them for one of our company events. Great bread at a good price (our employees love their bread). Customer service was very good, placed my order on the phone and came the same day to put down the deposit. The employees helped load my order into my car when I came to pick up. I also purchased a dozen of mixed red beef and green pork tamales, carnitas and sweet bread. It's hilarious how I'm the only Asian customer in the line. The line can be very long especially after the morning after a pay per view fight. Don't forget the homemade salsa which is complimentary when you purchase a pound of carnitas. This place has been here since before I was born. I'm 34 LOL. My mom and I used to walk here a couple times a week for the sweet bread (pan dulce) and some chicharonne. They've always been delicious, and they still are! I live out in corona now, but whenever I visit my parent's house in Whittier, I stop by and purchase about 3 brown bags full of sweet bread for my parents and myself, and it's about 15 bucks. When I first arrived, I thought this place was closed. There were bars on the windows and doors. However, there also was a door to the right. It was half covered by the sign they had hanging. I didn't come here for the bakery, but for the tamales. I got red pork, green pork, and green with cheese. Everything was so good! They are not stingy with the meats in the tamales either. Some places have more masa than meats in them. It wasn't overly dry or mushy and it's a good size. The price is great too considering inflation. My only reason for not giving them 5 STARS.....the woman at the counter and her poor, poor lack of customer service I understand you might not be totally excited about what you do, but unless you're part of the family owned business, maybe consider doing something else?
