This place is a hidden gem to out of towers like us. The lunch of crepes dishes with side salads was spot on. The mushroom crepe i had was perfect in flavor and portion. Tracy our server helped us select from the bistro style menu. The empanadas and the enchiladas will be had on a follow up visit! Reasonably priced and prepared to expectations. This quaint restaurant is the perfect stop in bucolic Black Mountain. Owned by an Argentinian woman who is rather famous for her empanada food trucks around Asheville along with her husband of French descent the menu carries dishes direct from both countries. The savory crepes are made from buckwheat flour which goes perfectly with mushrooms or beef stroganoff. The tamales are authentic with an excellent cilantro sauce. The French onion soup is the best I have ever had. I had the lemon crepe for dessert. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee which was fresh ground. This spot was quaint and yummy but expensive. The restaurant is in a little house across from the post office in downtown Black Mountain. It was only 4 minutes from our hotel and is local, so liked both of those things. We ate outdoors on the deck and enjoyed the fireflies as the sun went down. The French onion soup was good, but mostly cheese and a bit overpriced at $9 a bowl. Our server recommended empanadas that tasted like pizza rolls for our 8 year old and they were a hit along with the sweet crepes we shared at the end of our meal. There were only 4 of us and 2 of us only got soup and our bill was still over $70, so a bit on the pricey side. My husband was disappointed that they had no ice for water when he asked (it was served room temperature). I was fine with that, but mention it because it may make a difference to some. read more

I was so looking forward to trying the authentic tamales here. The pics looked so good! Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Our party ordered a ham and cheese crepe, a strawberry/blueberry/Nutella crepe, and two tamales (chicken and mushroom). The tamales were extremely bland. The sauce that came with them was really good, but had we not had the sauce, I wouldn't have even eaten the tamale. It completely lacked flavor and seasoning. The salad that came with all the dishes was light and the dressing was good. I gave this place four stars solely on the crepes. My toddlers loved the ham and cheese crepe and devoured it faster than any grilled cheese they ever got at a restaurant. I took a bite of it myself and was pleasantly surprised at the cheese they used. It had a lot of flavor and wasn't greasy. The fruit and Nutella crepe was de-licious! It was packed full of fruit and chocolate and everyone at the table was fighting over it. I would definitely go back for the crepes alone! read more

Charming little cafe in Black Mountain. Dropped by for lunch on a rainy, gloomy day, but inside the cafe was warm and inviting. I was amused by the menu--half French, half Argentine/South American. I stuck to the French side of the menu and ordered the French onion soup and the mushroom crepe. Both were good, but be prepared for heaping amounts of cheese (and that's coming from a cheese lover). Wow. My favorite place in Black Mountain so far. My husband and I went on a Saturday night- I expected it to be crowded but oddly, it wasn't. We sat out on the beautiful patio. Service was slow, but we totally didn't care because it was so beautiful. But it did take about 15 min to get our wine- I got the pesto crepe and it was phenomenal! We shared the banana "almost heaven" (I think that was its name!) crepe for dessert. I don't like chocolate so they brought that on the side for my husband and I just ate it with bananas, walnuts and whipped creams- it was delicious! Two thumbs up! read more

Liked it so much we came two days in a row! The French onion soup draws locals -- and it was easy to see why. Gruyere cheese and sliced baguette baked on top of the broth, very good. The menu is wonky/international, with French food being represented by a selection of crepes and Latin food with empanadas and tamales. The crepes were large and fluffy with plenty of different, creative combos of ingredients to choose from. I also tried two of the tamales, one made with a mushroom filling and another with traditional roast pork. House vinaigrette was tangy and delicious. ... Waitress, who said she'd worked in hospitality for nearly 15 years, was cheerful and very helpful. Lots of places to eat outside, in a covered, ventilated porch and on the deck if no rain. read more

This was by far some of the most incredible food I have ever had. My husband and I have been wanting to try their food for awhile and finally got around to it tonight. We happily walked out with $70 worth of takeout because we just wanted to try everything. We foolishly thought we would have leftovers but it was all too tasty to leave for later. I cannot even begin to express how tasty it all was - each new item topped the last. La Guinguette made this pregnant lady's day. I would also like to add some valuable insight to other diners based on reviews that I've seen here. This restaurant is small. Service may take a little longer because 1.) there is one person cooking. To put more than one person in that size of a kitchen would be negligent and impossible. 2.) the server station is again, small. To have more than one server on would be physically difficult. 3.) the food is all made from scratch, by hand, right there. If you want drive thru, go to Wendy's. Food of this quality takes time and effort. To be frank, anyone that has anything to say about the amount of time it takes to make the food has clearly never worked in a restaurant and doesn't understand the efforts that these fine people are going to in order to serve their community this dank cuisine. My wife and I had dinner here I and were very happy with the experience. The restaurant is in a funky old house across from the post office, sort of off the main track. There is a nice patio out back, although it was a bit too cool when we were there. The place has a nice laid-back vibe, though, very friendly. We shared the taste-of-France appetizer plate, and found the pate and cheeses excellent. I liked the salami, but my wife isn't so fond of salami, so she didn't rave about it. But she did rave about the wine. It is no loss that we don't recall the name because it was a special wine left over from a party. For dinner we shared a crepe filled with smoked salmon, a chicken empanada and a pork tamale with cilantro sauce. While I found everything excellent, the crepe was the standout. I'm still tasting it as I write this. And my wife loves buckwheat, so that the crepes are made with buckwheat was a bonus for her. She normally doesn't like salmon that much (more for me!), but she loved the salmon crepe. We are from Atlanta, so we were very pleasantly surprised that the total tab came to just over $50 counting a glass of wine and a beer. Almost one year ago, I bookmarked this café based on the awesome Yelp reviews. I was also intrigued by the combination of Argentinian and French cuisines. La Guignette is a quaint and cozy café located across from the main post office in Black Mountain. Without the Café sign, one could easily mistake it for someone's home. Look for the bright yellow house with plenty of on street parking. The moment I opened the door , I knew it was going to be good. The smell of spices, the sounds of jazz and subtle décor really set the tone. I chose to sit on the indoor patio extension where it is warm and bright. The specialty of the house here are homemade empanadas, tamales and crepes. For only $10 you can choose two empanadas from their list of many. The plate was presented with a really nice lentil salad and green salad, both nicely dressed. Now on to the empanadas! The Carne de Vaca was heavenly. Local beef, hardboiled egg and green olives. The Berenjena was also good - filled with eggplant, onions, tomatoes roasted red peppers. A decent list of wines and local beers to drink. The menu is rounded out with a mind boggling variety of crepes both savory and sweet. The atmosphere is relaxed, the prices are fair and the service is good. I loved that you could order several things and not be stuffed. We drove two hours to try out. Everything made from scratch-the chicken and eggplant empanadas were fantastic and flaky and accompanied by small fresh salad. The crepes were delicate and perfection. We enjoyed a delicious dinner with amazing, plentiful crêpes. I had the Forestiere crêpe, which had a delicious mix of mushrooms, garlic and cheese with such a big portion the crêpe was overflowing. My wife had Le Pestou, which was a tasty mix of basil pesto, tomato and cheeses. Our guests had the best Empanada I have ever tasted. They were moist and hardy, rather than the dried out doughy types I usually get served. Plus Tracy, our server, was very attentive to our needs. I have had La Guinguette on my radar for a while and was happy I finally got the chance to try it out. I was just cruising through on the highway and decided to grab lunch here before getting back on the road. I ordered 2 empanadas for pick-up and took them to the nearby gorgeous Lake Tomahawk and ate overlooking the Lake and Seven Sisters peaks in the distance. The empanadas were excellent and the server was very helpful for me getting my order ready. I definitely think eating in is the best option and I will make the time to do so on my next visit. The restaurant is in this adorable little house and they have seating both inside and on their super cute little patio. La Guinguette is easy to walk to from downtown Black Mtn but it's not something you are likely to just stumble upon without a tip from a local or checking out Yelp. Everyone else has already told you how great the food is, so no need for me to repeat it. But, what I do want to talk about is our (my wife, her brother and his wife, and myself) experience on Saturday evening 01-July. My wife and I were visiting Black Mountain for a four-day weekend from Atlanta; my wife's brother and sister-in-law were visiting from Charlotte. The restaurant is located in a small house is the décor is quite lovely and somewhat funky! We greeted with a smile and a sign that said "Sit where your heart desires" or something like that. The waitress/hostess promptly brought us menus and was soon back to take drink orders. We were somewhat slow in receiving our drinks, but we began to notice a couple of other tables (we were on the back porch!) were all but ignored. One party member visited the restroom and noticed our waitress seemed to have to serve every table in the restaurant -- both in the main room and the back porch! Yes, service was slow ... but, attentive and with a smile ... and we were starting to feel for the girl. One table did voice a complaint ... but, another table RUDELY voiced a complaint and this is when we overheard her tell them she was the only waitress on duty for the entire restaurant AND there was only one cook on duty (and I am sure a lot of prep work was required, too). We finally received our food ... which was DELICISOUS, by the way ... and enjoyed our evening thoroughly. When it was time to leave I pulled the young lady aside and told her what we had observed and how much we enjoyed everything; I tried my best to express as much kindness and understanding as possible. She told me I was one the few who actually were nice to her concerning the situation -- that most of the customers had been downright rude and didn't seem to care that she was the only waitress there. She also started to cry. The rest of the party expressed kind words as well ... and she had made the best possible effort with the situation at hand. Perhaps I would have given just a Four Star Rating ... but, considering how great the food was -- and considering what a major effort our waitress made to assure we had a pleasurable experience despite the "staff of only two," I can not give them less than FIVE STARS! Yes ... we WILL be back! And, I recommend La Guinguette to anyone visiting Black Mountain! read more

My wife and I came here 2 weeks while visiting from Raleigh. The idea of French and Argentinian was really appealing to us, great concept on paper but I don't think the execution was that great. The location was very charming and the service was great but they could have done much more with the food. We ordered empanadas to start, we got 2 different kinds and I have to say that they were just ok. I am South American so I've tried plenty of empanadas in my life. Then we ordered the crepes and unfortunately they were also just ok. We got 2 different kinds, one with Nutella and fruit and another one with dulce the leche. There was not really much variety but at least the fruit seemed fresh. I was disappointed at the fact that there was barely a little bit of dulce the leche in my crepe, it wasn't even thick and creamy as the Argentinian dulce the leche that I can get at the store. So To sum up I would rate this restaurant as " just ok". I Will not be coming back next time I am in town. read more
