We saw this place while visiting Wicked Weed across the street. After seeing the amazing Yelp reviews we decided to return a few days later and try it out. I ordered the Pork Arepa and Yuka Fries. The food was delicious - fresh, very flavorful and well balanced. The staff was friendly and did not act annoyed at us for bringing kids along. They even came out and offered us a high chair. Even though the restaurant is small, they had ample outdoor seating as well. We enjoyed our lunch immensely! When we return to the area, we'll have to come back and try more from the menu. read more

I had high hopes based on the reviews for Little Chango but my order of the chicken arepa fell short. It lacked flavor and salt, so much so, that I had to put a bunch of different sauces (from another restaurant) on it to finish it. Wow! A flavor explosion meets gluten free. We had ropa viejo and jibara arepas. The arepas were so light and fluffy and tender. We added escabeche (perfect blend of flavors!) and tostones (with delicious sauce). We needed dairy free as well, so sadly no queso for us, but please enjoy it if you aren't dairy free. We got our order to go, and it was packaged well and stayed hot until we got back to our hotel room, even though it was quite cold outside. This is a tiny place with maybe 8-12 barstools. It is squeaky clean and decorated so nicely. The owner has a great sense of humor as evidenced by his posted hours by the door. Everything is gluten free. I wish this was in my hometown. I would eat there several times a week. I will certainly return when I am in Asheville again, and am even considering placing an order on my last day here to take home for dinner. One thing to note: street parking only as the lot next to the building belongs to another establishment, and they don't play with you parking in their spots. read more

A must visit in Asheville! This is a convenient location in downtown Asheville and walkable from all the central hotels. Their menu is pretty simple with different types of arepas and sides. They consistently run out of beans and rice so I wouldn't bet on getting those. I opted for the vegetarian arepa topped with avocados, mashed beans, onions, cheese, and plantains. I also had a side of yuca fries that came with pink sauce (mayo, garlic, etc). The base of the arepa was not as dense as I'm used to--in a good way. It was very fluffy like a pancake. And because the arepas are generously topped, I definitely think one arepa and a side is a sufficient meal. Everything is made fresh to order. Coming from South Florida, I was not expecting ropa vieja like this in the middle of the mountains. Little Chango is amazing. We came by midweek at around 7pm and had no issue getting a table outside, but we were fully prepared to take our order to go and enjoy it at one of the nearby breweries. Awesome fast/casual restaurant in AVL!. The service was exceptional during a furious crowded Saturday afternoon. Outside seating was limited, but people seemed to enjoy their food and move on quickly. The food was freshly prepared and on point. As a Latino, I can appreciate the authenticity of the arepas, tostones, maduros (amarillos), and yuca. They were outstanding. Frankly, the fried yuca was some of the best I have ever had (crispy on the exterior and super soft on the inside). I tried the arepas with pernil (by far everyone's favorite), the ropa vieja (second favorite) and lastly the chorizo. I'm not a chorizo fan in general, so I would pass on this again. I forgot to order the rice and beans, but I will surely order this the next time. I also had a hibiscus beverage which was refreshing and not too sweet. We had chicken and beef arepas, tostones, fried yucca, the corn fritters; all were good, the corn fritters and the arepas were the standouts. The aquas frescas were also very good! The only con for us was the seating; it was a very hot and sunny day and Little Chango's seating is an outdoor patio. The patio is 95% covered but two small tables get direct sun exposure. I got chicken chili verde and my husband got the ropa vieja and both were delicious. The dough was pillowy and light, and instead of the filling being inside, they put it on top. The arepa was almost more like a sope, but nevertheless it was amazing. A great find in the South Slope of Asheville! While touring the craft beverage places in this section of Asheville and started looking for a place to grab a bite. After looking at the menu and smelling the delicious aromas coming out the door we knew we found our place. Orders are placed at the counter, have a seat outside, and they will bring you your food. There are a few stools at the bar inside, but no other seating. Service was friendly and prompt. Be prepared for your order to take a bit as they are making items as they are ordered to keep things fresh and hot. The menu focuses on Arepas and Latin American food. We ordered the Pernil and the Ropa Vieja Arepas with a side of yuca fries. These were the best Arepas and yuca I have ever eaten! Prices were very reasonable. Great newish business on the south slope. We like the simple menu and the young woman who greeted us. The place is small, perhaps I should say intimate, with a nice patio. The patio has some accomodations for wheelchair access. Three of us had the chicken salad and really liked it. They have Asheville-made sodas, beer, and hard seltzer. The menu is a selection of arepas and sides. The arepas are great, one would equate to a small plate, one arepa plus a side could comprise a meal. If you have a bigger appetite you could eat more. Arepas are 11 or 12$ each, sides are around 7-8$ each. The arepa bread was delicious and they are very intentional in the sourcing of ingredients. The place is tiny, but that is clear from the street outside. 6 choice bar seats plus 3 stools against a window with a narrow rail bar that you could conceivably eat on maybe, but definitely adequate for having a drink while waiting for an order. Pretty tight inside when others are lined up to order(counter service). There are several nice tables outside, but it is not a covered or heated patio. I am all for concepts that hyper focus on a specific type of food with the idea of executing it at a high level. When that's the approach, the execution at a high level is really key though. I'd say everything about Little Chango met that bar except for one biggie: they left the yucca fries I ordered out when our food was packaged. I know well that it is a good idea to check to go orders yourself for accuracy. But when you are ordering with a couple other people, and the bags have a lot of stuff in them, and the place is really crowded without space to check the order, and it is freezing outside, and it is a restaurant that I'd assume does over 50% of their business as takeout, I feel like it is reasonable to expect that they're going to get the order right. Our order wasn't huge, but 5 items, enough to make one small box missing unnoticed until we got to our eating destination. All in all, I highly recommend Little Chango, but I would check the order if you're getting takeout. Which is always a good idea. But when standard tipping percentage nowadays on takeout is comparable to in house dining I feel like restaurants should be able to nail orders themselves. Anyway, I'll stop venting and reiterate that the food is great. The South Slope location(a brewery district) offers a ton of closeby options for places to take your food and eat at a community table or bar(which is totally allowed if you order a drink). And it's right on the street, so you could easily order online and swing by to pick up your order. read more

Most expensive Arepa I've ever paid for but it did taste good. Typically I'm used to paying $14 w/tip for two and not $18 w/tip for one. I understand the fact rent is high and they pay a livable wage to employees but as I went to pay for the meal I had some crazy sticker shock.
