I don't write many reviews these days. But this spot deserves one. It's a food truck just outside Hi-Wire (which is another cool place) that makes the best Cuban north of Hialeah. On a nice day, there's nothing better than sitting at a table in this parking lot, eating a Cuban and sipping tequila (shout out to Hi-Wire's bartenders). Unless it gets crowded; then I'm out.

Pollo a la Plancha (front), yucca fries (center), Pan con Lechon (back), along with beers from El Patio de Guajiro

Guajiro describes itself as Cuban comfort food. The location is a combination of a permanently anchored food truck where you order and they cook the food, several outside tables around the food truck and the inside and outside area of an adjoining bar called El Patio de Guajiro. So a nice choice of places to eat both inside and outside. We sat at a downstairs table below the bar next to the food truck and there was great shade and a nice breeze even on an otherwise hot day in the River Arts District (RAD). We had 2 sandwiches: the Pollo a la Plancha (grilled chicken) and the Pan con Lechon (roast pork). Of the two, the Lechon was by far and away better -- very well seasoned pulled roast pork. The seasoning is uniquely Cuban style, so this is not a pulled pork sandwich like you can get anywhere else in Asheville. It was very good as it was served, but the addition of their guava jalapeno hot sauce made it even better. The chicken sandwich on the other hand was good, but not very interesting. The seasoning was not particularly flavorful and the onions were few and bland, but the chicken itself was nicely grilled and the bread it was served on was fantastic, with a nice crispy crunch. Adding some guava jalapeno sauce really saved the chicken sandwich. We had a side of yucca fries. I think the yucca fries are much better at Little Chango. Here they were much thicker cut and so the yucca was a little chewy inside. Still good though and the outside had a nice crispness and flavor. The dipping sauce was just okay (again, Little Chango's sauce is much better). The beers from the patio bar were fine, although the selection was limited. The bar tender was very friendly and courteous. Not quite worthy of 5 stars, but a perfectly good place in RAD for lunch and a beer.

Empanadas, media noche, & Cuban sandwich

Food & service were fantastic! We ordered beef & a ham/cheese empanadas plus the media noche & Cuban sandwich. All were super tasty & the staff were excellent! Can't wait to go back!

New spot getting rave reviews- so much so they are flooded and can't keep up! A good thing, I suppose? If you want a full selection of the menu I suggest getting there when they open... 10:30? 11? We arrived at 1 and about half the items were covered over with blue tape. Sad, I was desperate for a medianoche. Instead we got 2 croquettes (So good. Possibly better than ones in Miami) and a guava cream cheese pastry. We snagged the last one. The family came from Miami 3 months ago and I'm so happy for an easy stop for cuban- the only thing I miss from SoFla. You could see the guy at the register was stressed and hopefully as time goes it'll calm down and things will run more smoothly for them. Until then your best bet is to get there when they open or soon after to have a large selection to choose from.

The food was good and plentiful. Cuban coffee taste was a bit off, not sure which brand they use, that could be the difference.

So, it's how it came to be. It's the main drag and was challenging on New Year's Day. Not sure if it's always like that or if it was because parking was free for the holiday and everyone was out and about. You'll have to figure out parking on your own because I left the rental a few blocks away in a spot that I wasn't going to give up to look for, hope and pray for another closer to the restaurant. Place was bustling. Counter was full. All tables were packed as they kept turning over as soon as parties were leaving. Service was friendly but like I mentioned, it was busy. Had to wave team members over a few times - but tended to immediately after. Never waiting so long that I would say it was bad. Between the two of us, we shared the brunch Hash and Creole Shrimp & Grits. See pics. Portion sizes look small but the pics aren't capturing how deep the dish went down. Enjoyed the hash as it's not something I eat regularly so it was like a treat. I liked the consistency and how well everything was prepared including the eggs - as ordered sunny side up. The Creole dish seemed not bland but muted. My expectation of anything Creole tends to be spicy and I don't mean hot. Not that it was bad but just for me, could have used a little more kick. It's been a few decades since the last time I was in Asheville. Times have definitely changed. This place is a nice addition and if you find yourself in the area, definitely check it out.

It was elevated Southern cuisine, and we enjoyed it enough that we may go back before leaving the area. The restaurant has a comfortable feel -- upscale, but not stuffy. The service was excellent. The servers were personable and attentive without hovering. At one point, I accidentally dropped my napkin, and our server immediately brought me another one. Our water glasses were continually refilled, and our server checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed. My partner and I liked so many things on the menu that we knew ordering soup, salad, an appetizer, and entrées would be too much. We told our server we were sharing, and for most of the courses, they divided the portions and brought them out on separate plates. That was another small touch that showed they were paying attention to detail. There wasn't anything we had that we wouldn't order again. We started with the seasonal soup, which was a tomato bisque, followed by the strawberry and feta salad. The country ham board was excellent and actually had me looking for Lusty Monk mustard the next day. For our main entrée, we shared the shrimp and grits, which was also delicious. I was grateful to be able to get a seat at the bar, with a less than 10 minute wait. It is honestly worth it! The staff was warm and welcoming, even with tending to loads of customers (this is a true skill and art). The ambiance is upbeat and lively! Imagine a roadside breakfast parlor. I sat at the bar and it was good vibes! The hostess used to live in my hometown (who woulda thunk it) & I met the coolest guy from Boston, who has a golden doodle named Nugget back home. Good vibes all the way, which added to a special experience. He was flying back home after his meal. Now, onto the food (the part you all have been patiently waiting for). I ordered a hibiscus tea as my beverage (warm and refreshing). I also ordered the carrot cake hotcakes, a side of bacon, and a side of home fries. The carrot hotcakes were luscious! They came with hazelnut butter, and amazing syrup!!! These hotcakes were savory and filling! The bacon had an essence of hickory! A perfect medley between crispy and tender! The home fries were seasoned nicely and I doused them with ketchup and hot sauce! This was an iconic and memorable restaurant experience for me! This is coming from someone who has dined in restaurants around the world! Cheers!
