Boletus and Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Reggiano Slices (€10,90)
Kristen H.

At 6:30pm on a Wednesday night, there aren't many restaurants open in Spain, as patrons traditionally flock to tapas bars well past 8pm. However, Restaurante La Escaloná is open from 12pm-12am, which was perfect for my family members, who, as Americans, were hungry much earlier than the usual Spanish dining hour! When we walked in at 6:30pm, we were the only diners in the rustically-decorated restaurant (complete with a bar and outdoor seating), but we chalked that up to it being fairly early, since the restaurant has a plethora of reviews on Google. However, it may be important to note that we remained the only ones there throughout the course of our meal (about an hour), though it was a weekday. We were given a bread basket with pre-packaged bread and bags of breadsticks (which seem to be popular in Spain). The bread was definitely a bit stale, but it was free, which not all bread services are in Europe. My mom ordered a glass of their Red Wine Sangria (€5,90) - it wasn't the best sangria we had in Spain (nor the best price), but it wasn't overly sweet, and it was refreshing on a hot, 108-degree Fahrenheit Sevilla day! I ordered using my high-school level Spanish, but the servers seemed to speak English as well, and there are English menus online! We started with the Grilled Small Squids With Eels and Prawns in Garlic Oil Sauce (€11,90) - a great portion for the price! The small squids were cooked well, with a nice bite, and the eels were unlike anything we'd had before: their thinness almost reminded me of noodles, with none of the greasiness that I associate with eel at sushi restaurants. However, the garlic oil sauce that the seafood was coated in was a bit too rich for me. Next, we ordered the Roasted Avocado with Marinated Red Tuna and Lumpa Roe (€11,90), which came with an avocado split in half, topped with a poke-like tuna mixture, sushi-style roe, and an aioli sauce that reminded me of Japanese mayo (rich, tangy, and just a bit sweet). The tuna wasn't the best quality, and the roe was nothing special, but for the price, I can't complain. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the texture of the roasted avocado, and I think the dish needed just a bit more acid to balance out the richness of the avocado and the sauce. We also got the Boletus and Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Reggiano Slices (€10,90), which they've cited as "our star dish on the menu." This is a pretty traditional Italian risotto, and while it wasn't the best I've had in my life, the rice isn't overly mushy nor undercooked, and the risotto has a strong mushroom flavor. This is a very rich dish, so I couldn't have more than a couple of bites, but my brother, who loves creamy, luscious foods, was a huge fan! Lastly, we ended our meal with a dish off of the Chef's Recommendations Menu: the Pork Meat Grilled With Iberian Ham, Small Eggs, and Homemade Spicy Sauce (€12,90). We had some amazing pork during our trip in Spain, so this dish was just kind of average to us. The pork didn't taste like the best quality, and it was very "porky" in flavor. The small eggs were unique, but paired with the thick spicy sauce and greasy fries (which were crispy but overly oily), made the dish too rich for us. All in all, this is not a bad place at all for some tapas if you don't mind dishes that are a bit on the heavier side - there's nothing that I would deem "light" or "healthy" on the menu here. Service is quick and efficient, and the prices are totally reasonable - a great stop for "bar food" type tapas at an earlier hour!

Food & service were great - located in the Alfalfa area. Menu felt very similar to La Malvatore. We did outdoor dining. MILLE FEOUILLE OF EGGPLANT, ROASTED SWEET POTATOES, GOAT CHEESE - 9.90€ Amazing display, stack of layers ... a little challenging to eat, lol. The standout dish of the evening. MIX DE QUESOS - 4.50€ Cheese plate also very good - 4 cheese wedges; jam esp. good. GRILLED IBERIAN FINEST PORK FILLETS W/ FRIES & SMALL FRIED GREEN PEPPERS - 14.90€ 3 big pieces of pork, plenty fries, jalapeno peppers not spicy. Great dish for sharing. PAN Y PICOS - 1.20€ Observing all restaurants provide this even though we didn't order it. Just for reference - sangria 5.90€, and 1/2 L water 2.00€. Highly recommend.

10/10 for anyone who is looking for a great restaurant to enjoy local tapas! Everyone is super friendly. The service was quick and efficient. We had bread dipped in olive oil, payoya cheese, red sausage, red tuna tataki, raviolis stuffed with lamb, and shrimp with kimchee sauce.

A nice lunch, standard Seville fare, reliable nice staff and good drinks. The sangria was quite tasty I give it three as my dish was forgotten and, 40 minutes later a dish....the wrong dish was served. (Fried egg on ratatouille....egg plant is one of those veggies that I can not eat) Nice decor, plenty of out door seating. A good stop if you are hungry.

We stopped by here twice during our visit to Seville and we were not disappointed. While Spain is known for Sangria, my favorite cocktail of our trip was the Cuban Mojito found here. The food was very good as well. We enjoyed croquetas and a delicious salad with goat cheese. Lastly, we always had excellent service and the prices are very good. I would definitely stop here if you are close by!

This place is overrated, I had the risotto which was very average despite the good reviews. The empanada is okay but nothing exceptional. There are sprinklers outside but the water touched the food.

We visited la Escaloná at the end of our Sevilla trip to have some last tapas lunch. The restaurant is located central at a small square and offers a nice and big terrace to sit outside. At the restaurant, the staff is very friendly and you get the typical olives, crackers, and bread as an appetizer. The tapas were excellent. Presented nicely, the meat and fish quality was perfect and the combinations presented just great. Especially all sauces and pestos seemed homemade and will stay in good memory. All in all the price is perfect for the amount and quality of food you get and we totally recommend anyone to pass by for some tapas.

i had the yogurt and muesli with a cafe con leche and orange juice

We had a great brunch here, however the service is very slow. That would be the only issue. The food was great. Part of my family got the Waffles with chocolate and loved them.

La comida es buena, pero se encuentra mejor comida en otros locales alrededor de la plaza. El servicio fue muy bueno.

Food is great, we actually came here twice during our trip to Seville. It satisfied the adults plus the picky North American children!

Tables perhaps a bit close together, not terribly comfortable. Loud, busy. As far as the service, it was our impression that our waiter was the only person serving the 30 or so tables in their dining room. Suffice it to say the service was not fast and not good. Inexplicably, every time we ordered a Coke we were asked if we wanted a Coke Zero. If I wanted a Coke Zero I would have said the words Coke Zero. Even when I asked for another Coke, he again asked "Coke Zero?" It took next to forever to get the check, and forever to get a cappuccino. At one point I took it upon myself to point the waiter to a table behind us that had been desperately attempting to get his attention. This was all not good. As to the food. First, our fault for not knowing what tataki meant. We did not expect to receive salmon that was seared on the outside and raw on the inside. So that one is on us, although we also think the meal came tepid at best. The lamb on couscous was dry and tough. The pork cheek stew was actually pretty good if a bit gluey. The calamari was good. The sushi as they called it was average. What they called the tiramisu was more like a pudding with some liqueur and chocolate on the top, and a little bit of breadish stuff in the bottom. Not my idea of tiramisu, and probably not yours either. So we could not get too excited about these various dishes. But what was particularly frustrating and bizarre was that two people sitting across from us ordered food that looked absolutely delicious. So we got to sit there wondering why we didn't order what they ordered. They ordered a large beef dish with potatoes which is on the menu, and we think they ordered a large octopus meal although we are not sure. Everything they had looked better than anything we had. So it may be that we somehow just picked the wrong items. So it was a strangely frustrating meal. This place has good reviews and we expected good tasting food. Unfortunately it did not work out that way, and the ambience and service were negative contributing factors. I can't entirely write this place off, only because the food other diners received actually looked very good. But I don't think I would go there again.

The layout can be a bit confusing, as the restaurant seems to have three dining rooms with separate entrances but only one kitchen. Where we sat was charming, with stone walls and wood-beamed ceilings. We started with the foie appetizer, which was a delightful surprise for my palate. It was a unique combination of foie, cream cheese, and what I believe was pear. It was unusual, but I ended up really enjoying it. The zucchini noodles with pesto and burrata were also very enjoyable. However, the star of our dinner was the 40 day dry aged ribeye, cooked perfectly medium-rare, tender, and absolutely delicious. If we had discovered it sooner, I would have happily eaten here a second time.

And my grandpa was a cattle rancher so I've had quite a bit of steak in my life. 9.5/10 The pumpkin dish was also exceptional. 9/10 The risotto was the perfect compliment. Wow. Great texture and flavor. 9/10 The croquettes were good, I didn't like the mayo on top. 8/10 The dessert that was essentially a bread pudding was absolutely delicious.i barely tried the orange dessert but it tasted like a Pillsbury orange cinnamon roll. This place is relayed to but distinct from the Bodeguita Antonio Romero, which is newer; this restaurant has been family run since 1939. The menu is only in Spanish, but some staff speak English. They have many wine options by the glass and the classic red vermouth, but we opted for house rioja, which was great. Onto food: they have various size options for most dishes, which is nice if you want to try more variety. Atún rojo envuelto en iberico: red tuna wrapped in iberico and the most amazing tomato sauce Bonito en escabeche con pimentos asados: canned bonito but with a nice acid from the escabeche Pringa: their classic sandwich Carilla: pork cheek served on fries, so tender and rich, not overly fatty Espinaca con garbanzo: spinach and garbanzo stew Alcachofa confitada con taquitos de jamon: confit artichoke stew with their ham version of fried, diced pancetta Everything comes out pretty quickly, but every dish has such great home cooked depth of flavor. This is exactly what we were looking for when we wanted a more low key, authentic place. Note: credit cards accepted.

This is the spot they told us to visit and after doing some quick research, it seems to appear in several lists for the best tapas/casual restaurants in the area. They told the hotel that they could not offer a reservation but that we should show up a few minutes before they opened and we should have no problem getting a table. We got a little lost on the way and got there right as they opened ... upon checking in, the hostess said about a 45 minute wait. She said that she could likely get us a spot at the bar earlier, which honestly would have been our preference, but we had a toddler in tow and it wouldn't have worked. After about an hour, we were shown to our table. You can order drinks from the bar while you wait, so I was pretty happy by the time dinner came. The drinks are not cheap here, either. The menu looked fantastic ... Although mostly in Spanish, so I had to keep asking my phone what each item was. Overall, everything was okay ... to less than okay. They are 'fakous' for their beef sandwich (pringa, or something of that nature) We each ordered one and they were kind of dry and tasteless. The bread was so dry and dense ... and the beef filling tasted reheated. The fried anchovies were good ... we had better other places. These were a little soggy and more of a filet than the whole fish. The braised pork was the best dish we had ... in a creamy sauce. I am not sure why the meal didn't hit, but we considered it to be average. We did see many locals there, so I am sure it's fairly authentic but it wasn't quite tapas and it wasn't quite dinner. The waitress was a little frosty and told us to speak English because she was busy and our Spanish wasn't great. Fair enough, though we did hope to practice more while in Spain. Overall, you probably won't hate your experience here ... but it performed far below the glowing reviews from our hotel and websites. We liked the food overall much more in Barcelona vs. Seville ... but consider the atmosphere and scenery better in Seville. Maybe we came on an off night, or had too high of expectation.
