Complimentary rolls were delicious. We got the Calamari Fritta to start and no complaints. Nice, crisp, light breading with a pleasant marinara dipping sauce. My GF got the Gnocchi in a fra diavolo sauce, which she loved (and said would order again) and I got the shrimp scampi with linguine; it came with 7 or 8 decently-sized shrimp that was combined with the silky smooth, lemony, buttery, garlicky scampi sauce. Absolutely would order again. Piccolo Trattoria will always be on my list of go-to places whenever we are in the area.

Lasagna- (this was the real reason for our visit- the best is at Canalis in Rotterdam but we hoped for as good and closer)- TOTALLY overcooked mushy pasta (you undercook the noodles Al dente because it's baked and continues cooking after it's made), couldn't taste any of the supposed meat inside, just an overwhelming amount of cheese. We were not disappointed. We were seated promptly by our lovely hostess, and Shaun immediately came over to recite specials and to take our orders. He was attentive and we knew we were in good hands! We started with the Dr. Fox Cocktail: Angostura bitters, Bulleit Rye, Apple Liqueur, Dry Curacao, and Sweet Vermouth, which was perfect. It was accompanied by a hummus trio to spread on the bread. There was also a delicious foccacio. Next we were served a perfect salad, delicately dressed, and what made the salad so delightful was that the lettuce was torn into manageable pieces. A pet peeve of mine is large lettuce leaves that are difficult to wrangle, and this was not the case here. There were also tiny bits of cauliflower that gave the salad a nice texture and crunch.  I had the Stuffed Artichoke and my husband had Shrimp Gamberi on an Arugula salad. Both were substantial and beautifully seasoned. We had two glasses of an Argentine Tomero Malbec. It was a generous pour. For the main course, I had Polla al Limone (Lemon Chicken) over spinach. A simple dish done well. My husband had the Halibut special, a classic Mediterranean baked halibut with tomatoes, capers, and olives. So good that he finished it all...a rarity for him. (The halibut was pricey and it would be appreciated if the price was mentioned when the specials were gone over. Perhaps we should have asked.) We finished with a Sorbetto al Lampone, a tart raspberry sorbet in a dark chocolate shell and sliced.  And as we left, our sweet hostess brought over Lucianno, the most adorable puppy, to send us off with puppy kisses! Michelle behind the bar was especially lovely and pours a STRONG drink, which we appreciated Honestly, I'm surprised they weren't busier for Memorial Day weekend, although maybe the bigger crowd came earlier in the day. Food-wise, the appetizers and seafood specials were very satisfying and obviously fresh. We ordered the crab cakes, soft shell crab special, their clam special (half clam casino / half clam oreganata), and a Bloody Mary topped with what had to be 12 shrimp. The crab dishes especially were fantastic -- those crab cakes were PACKED with crab and tasted incredibly fresh. I do want to leave a couple honest criticisms though. I was not impressed with the mussels in white wine sauce, despite multiple waitresses recommending them. This is a dish I order frequently in NYC and Long Island, so maybe my standards are high, but the sauce was unusually sweet -- my great aunt noticed it immediately too. It almost tasted like a sweet white wine was used, which just doesn't work for this kind of dish. The wine either tasted low quality or maybe wasn't cooked off enough. One other thing that disappointed me: the drawn butter is definitely not real butter. It tasted like a vegetable oil-based substitute. For a seafood restaurant serving fresh crab and lobster, I really think real butter should be standard. That said, I would absolutely come back here for the vibes alone. Beautiful waterfront setting, friendly staff, strong drinks, and fresh seafood made for such a relaxing holiday afternoon.

When I asked our server, (who was very good, professional, friendly and attentive), after waiting about 45 minutes, if we could just have our garlic bread, because we were extremely hungry now at 8:30pm, she said it was coming out soon but that she'd bring us some Italian bread, which we didn't want but we ate anyway. Our entrees took another 45 minutes to come out after we finished our appetizers. The food was good. The portions were large. It was just the extremely long wait time for the food that killed this place for us. After the meal, I politely and privately asked our server if there was anything that could be done to make up for the wait time. She asked the manager and came back out with a bottle of Sambuca and shot glasses. No one wanted that so we politely turned that away. Our server then asked if anyone wanted dessert or coffee. It was already about 9:45pm. We were tired from a long day and ready to get out of there, so everyone passed on dessert and coffee. Our server then came back with the check. No discount at all. So I politely said, "There was nothing that could be done about the wait?", and she said, "I can ask the manager again, but we offered you Sambuca and then dessert, which was going to be on the house, but you didn't want either." I said, "OK, yes, please ask the manager again." She came back and said, "The manager took off a round of drinks for you.", which I was pleased with. Bottom line - if you're a large party (more than 6), or if they have a large party ahead of you, don't eat here.
