I would strongly recommend watching out with this place. I am not one to look for reasons to complain on food and I'm really easy going when it comes to places making mistakes here and there, but my experience here was by far the most repulsive and unprofessional way of service that I have yet experienced. I dined in and ordered a burrito, the service was average at that point. I waited for food for a few minutes and started eating, I would say the food grade is low, the fillings in the burrito were similar to mushy baby food and last but not least I found two THUMB NAILS in my mouth as I was finishing a bite. I took the food back and showed the manager the nails and he just took the plate back and insincerely said "sorry", Screw this place! I'd rate it less than one if I could. read more

This is a Chico tradition. I can honestly say the food tastes the same as it did over 30 years ago when I started eating there with my family as a kid. The food is good and very reasonable. The restaurant is clean and the people are friendly. They employ many of the young people in our community and that gives the restaurant a youthful feel all these years. My children love going there as much as I did when I was a kid. I don't know what I would have survived on in college if it wasn't for LaComida and there super low prices. Ok here is the deal with this Chico landmark of a restaurant. It's affordable. The food is served fast. The employees are very nice and friendly and has a welcome feel to it from the moment you get up to the counter to order. Sure the food isn't 100% truly authentic mexican, but depending on what you get it's tasty. And if you order a #1 getting 2 items which comes with rice and beans, a little tease of salad, and all the chips and mild salsa they have to offer, you aren't going away hungry. But be warned, lunch time and dinners can have a line out the door waiting to get in. read more

La Comida is one of those classic Chico restaurants. It has great prices, good location, and the food is pretty good. It seems like they always hire young women with bad attitudes to work the front register. Very rarely do I get a good experience from these order takers, for example I asked what came on an enchilada the last time I was there and the girl boggled at me and said "I know it has meat, but I don't know what else". I ordered the enchilada and enjoyed it but I was impressed byher lack of service. That said I'll be going back, just don't expect a greeting at the register. read more

I don't know why but I like this place. Is it gross? Yes. But for some reason it's really good. The chips and salsa on the table are good. For the picky people the chips aren't that fresh and the salsa is a little salty, but I like it. I always get two beef tamales with rice and I always like it. This place is inexpensive and very clean. However, I find the food quite bland and flavorless. It tastes like the whitest possible version of Mexican food. Not bad, just totally bland. I have been going to La Comida for many years. The food is cheap and satisfying. Not authentic by any means but definitely tasty. I had a very unpleasant experience, however, when I went there last. I was on my way there with 2 friends and we were trying to beat the high school lunch rush so we called in and order. When the guy answered I asked can we call in an order to eat there? He said ya what can i get you....So we order and when we get there there is a big line. We go to the front of the line where the pick up register is and I ask the owner is this where I go if we called it in? He says yes. So we pay for the meal and I go grab a table. Then he pulls me aside and says for the future call in orders are only to go. It's not fair to go in the front of the line and then grab a table in front of everyone and eat here. I said I was sorry I didn't realize because the guy on the phone said it was ok. His response was "nobody would have told you that. This has been our policy for a long long time" Ok so basically he is questioning my honesty and insinuating that I was lying. Such bullshit. I was so offended. I told him if he had told me on the phone it was only to go i wouldn't have grabbed a table I had no problem taking it to go. He smiled this fake smile and said it's fine for today there's lots of tables. So that's my yelp venting session. I'll still eat there. I still think it's good. But the owner is so rude. I miss his dad. He was the best! And I bet he'd be disappointed to know his son treated customers that way. read more

Yes, it's iceberg lettuce and cheddar cheese. Basic Mexican food, but it is sooo good! I love the taco salads with their yummy house dressing. The prices are very reasonable, and they have quick service. I call in an order, and get in the car and it's ready by the time I drive there. First time in Chico and La Comida was recommended by a good friend who used to work there 40 years ago! Had the Fiesta taco salad with shredded pork and it was delicious! The dressing should be bottled and sold. The salsa and chips were fresh and flavorful. What a place for a great price. Definitely coming back. read more

I grew up eating here. I moved away from Chico and had moved back. I took my wife who has never been there. I told her it was cheap but pretty good and a Chico tradition. The casher was very rude and treated us like crap. She threw our change back at us! It was like she acted like she did not want to take our order. I let it go. Oh my gosh, I LOVE La Comida. When I was in high school in redding, we used to go there for lunch for free chips and salsa and we'd order a bean and rice burrito, no grill, no cheese, no e-sauce (enchilada sauce). But now that I'm a grown up, I get it regular, PLUS extra e-sauce. With cheesy beans and rice on the side. With sour cream and ranch. If you ask for the ranch after you've ordered, you don't get charged. It might not be authentic mexican food, but it is what it is, and it's freaking delicious. and cheap. The crowd is a little lowbrow--lots of screaming kids and such, but it's worth it. Yum. I don't know if it's the same anymore, but it used to be that you get your salsa squeeze bottle out of a fridge, and a basket of chips, by yourself. I love having control. Once I tried to steal their awesome clock, but they caught me. Now it's gone--I would have appreciated it more. :) My daughter gets a side of mexican rice and beans, or a plain quesadilla and loves it. The sodas are huge and cheap. Get over yourself and enjoy some delicious food. Oh, I order the meal with a Super Burrito (a burrito covered with e-sauce and cheese, beans and rice, and a salad). this is probably the worst restaurant i have never been to. i got very excited to go have some nachos and the meal i opened when i got home was disgusting. i first thought there would be nacho cheese on my nachos because their menu offers sides of nacho cheese but not it was melted shredded cheese. if that didn't piss me off enough there was a massive amount of sour cream on top making my nachos non-enjoyable. i ended up throwing out my meal and having burning shit from the little amount i did eat. never again will i ever go or recommend it to anyone. read more

This was my first time eating here. The woman who took our order was super nice, and gave us a free sample of dip since we had never been before. Was very nice and patient with kids ordering. However I will never eat here again, the food is really awful. If you are on a budget I understand. Tuesday is taco night, tacos for a buck. That being said even my 16 year old son hated it. If you have teens I am sure you know they are basically human garbage cans and eat anything. His burrito was smothered in what tasted to be a mix of chili and enchilada sauce? So weird. The chips tasted stale and everything was of the lowest quality possible, hence the buck tacos people. Chips are stacked in baskets in a dish bin?! I will not sit here and bash to each his own. But seriously if you have any taste or standards move along. It is beyond Americanized Mexican food. The highlight was watching a girl at another table pull something out of her mouth while eating her food. Repeatedly spitting in to napkins and looking horrified. Not fancy, not authintic, but that's okay! My 3 favs...Nick's nachos w/ chicken. These are the nachos I go to if I have a craving and am not making my own. Generous with the sour cream and quac. Big enough to share and less than $5. So yes, the qualifies as cheap eats. Also like the Texas taco...they will add sour cream at no extra charge (believe this is less than $4) and is really more of a grilled burrito with lettuce and tomato. My 3rd is the chicken tostata with guac and sour cream. Except in the taco, I do find the beef a bit bland, but the chicken is alway good, if not a bit salty some times. It's cheap, real food that is served quickly. I'm probably here once a month, and it is consistant everytime. It's not where I go to impress or celebrate, but it is where I go to get a decent lunch for around $5 or less. If the managment reads these things, let your staff know voices carry if you're not busy. By no means a quality Mexican restaurant, but and incredible place for inexpensive, generous portions of salty, cheesy, carby fast food. La Comida tostadas have satisfied my Taco Bell-eqsue cravings for years, and will continue to as long as they are in business. A gigantic pile of iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese, and insanely salty salsa satiates desires also quenched by Top Ramen, drive through burgers, and frozen pizzas: simple flavors, harmonious textures, and convenience. Their drinks come with crushed ice in classic diner style plastic Pepsi cups which is aesthetically nostalgic and their dinnerware compliments it nicely. It is often very crowded, and usually loud (it is a popular spot for families, especially on weekends) but they do offer a take-out service that includes complimentary salsa, and a large bag of chips for a small price.
