Cheetos burrito: who allowed this abomination to exist. Feel like im committing war crimes, nice and big, too much crunch inside, I prefer a more homogenous texture, some cold parts. Its a burrito so its still generally good, but the addition of crunchy cheetos inside the warm ooey gooey burrito does not mix well. I will not get this again. First time we had food from this restaurant was at a party they catered. It was delicious, large portions and made with care. Then we went to their restaurant, they had several customers, but services was quick. We ordered ordered super burritos and tacos. All delicious. Burritos were $10 for regular and $12 for supreme. This was so good. Crispy chips. Nice cheese. Beans we're great. Chicken was so juicy and they PILED my to go order. They put a very large quantity of sour cream and Guac. A friend told me I had to try the California Burrito from this restuarant so today was the day. I did not look up their menu prior to see what was in it and I was pleasently surprised. I called in my order and told them I would like Chorizo as my choice of meat. Came in about 20 minutes later and paid $9 with my card. I would say that's the normal price for any burrito in life so I didn't hesitate to tip. The size of this burrito was more than grateful once i opened it up. Honestly, I'm not even sure of all the ingredients that goes into this thing but it definitely had full french fries which were cooked to perfection inside the first bite. This should have been a 5 star as they have very good food and have stepped up there game over the last couple years. It used to be you would never know when they are open, but they stick to their schedule now, accurately. One of the best late night spots for good mexican food. However the last couple times I've been in there they've messed up my order and corrected it which is all well and good. But, they told me I made the order wrong this time when I specifically articulated exactly what I wanted so the mishap would not happen again. It was pretty rude and ticked me off. I'm from the bay/valley, so I'm pretty picky with Mexican food. And this restaurant is top notch. I love that they have menudo/pozole offered throughout the week, not just on fridays or saturdays. I've been to this restaurant a few times since I lived so close to it. Although it is good, it isn't an authentic Mexican flavor. You need to be specific with what you order because the workers will charge you different. For example, I ordered a burrito de asada and they charged me for and made me a California Burrito. Another moment was when I ordered one of their combos which was $6 and they charged me for their $8 combo. When I informed them that they charged me wrong they said "oh I didn't think you meant that one" although I pointed at which I wanted. Horchata is $2.50 but it is in a medium cup NO REFILLS. before they had it in a large cup, kinda like big gulp cups, so the horchata isn't worth it anymore. I used to come to Tacos Tonaya almost every weekend, but moved around two years ago. I've been back a few times since, but things have gone downhill. When the owners are working, their food is delicious and the service is great. However, they have some staff that are seriously hurting their business of late. Most recently I came in around 8pm one night and ordered a chile verde burrito, a side of salsa, and a side of beans and rice. That would usually be a 10 minute trip in and out of the restaurant, decent food, happy customer. This was not that night's experience. In all, it took me 30 minutes from start to finish to get my to-go order. The service was poor, and the quality of the food was lacking. The two young women working switched between gossiping loudly and messing about on their phones the entire time while making my meal. They did not wash their hands after ringing up my order or handling their phones. Instead of having already hot food ready, they nuked my side of beans and rice in a styrofoam container to heat them up. The burrito I received was mainly beans, rice, wilted lettuce, and a little bit of chile verde. The meat I received had started to go bad, and the salsa was off, so I wound up having to throw it away after a few bites. It was literally making me nauseous. The beans had crusted over from being microwaved, and the rice was hardened. I don't usually complain about service issues because I know people have bad days, and I might have encountered them on one of them. But this was truly bad service, and a dangerous way for them to prepare food. The owners of Tacos Tonaya really need to re-train their staff, and have a long discussion with them about food safety and the proper way to prepare food. Hopefully they work on their issues and I can come back and update my review, because this place used to be great. read more

Me and my friend stopped by to buy a supreme burrito *it was our first time there* and it was pretty small for a supreme. Waited over 15 minutes for just one burrito and it wasn't even busy. On top of that, the little girl who was at the front of the Cash register was rude as fuck. Rolling her eyes at me while waiting for me food and giving me dirty looks. Even my friend had said so. We asked a question about the burrito and the little girl behind the counter gave us attitude back. Ate the burrito and the burrito was cold. Not even a little warm. The only warm thing was the rice. For me, these are best burritos that I have had! I have tried many burritos but none can compare to the California burrito. You got that nice carne asada taste within the burrito while you have that crunchy fries is just so good. I've tried other california type burritos in the bay area, but I honestly prefer this place rather than a burrito from San Francisco (to which many say are good, but I have a hard time seeing it). The burrito also has guacamole, sour cream, and some salsa which in combination, works really well. The restaurant is family owned and they are really nice! They may take a while to get your food when there is a lot of people but it is worth the wait for a burrito. Sure there's a $1 charge fee if you use your debit, but you can either make sure you bring some cash, or you can go to 7 Eleven and buy a snack/gum and get some cash back. That way you can avoid the charge and get a side snack for later when you are studying for that midterm. I definitely love this place and will be back again for more! They charge you a dollar for the use of debit/credit cards, there were ants in the fountain drinks when I was there, the restaurant could use a little cleaning up, and the food is the only redeeming quality. What saved this restaurant from a 1 star is that the burrito I got is delicious, amazing, and filling for a decent price. Plus it's near my apartment for convenience. The staffs were very friendly and they know how to make good burritos, so I am ordering take-out the next time I'm here, and without a drink. What prevented this restaurant from getting a higher score is what was previously stated: messy restaurant and ants in fountain drinks. The $1 charge for card usage is only a minor thing, but if you're going to charge me an extra dollar, at least clean your fountain. Will I be back? Hands down the best California Burrito in town! Only downfall is that it doesn't come with beans, but you can ask them to add beans for .50 cents more...(totally worth it)! Yeah, the restaurant is pretty small but I like to think of it as a "walk-in taco truck" if that makes any sense. The location is perfect, it's walking distance from the off campus dorms, downtown, and the hookah bar! In my opinion the prices are very reasonable. However, it's a little inconvenient that they charge a $1 fee to use your Debit Card. So what I suggest is that instead of complaining about the $1 fee, run across the street to 7/11, buy a drink for $1, and get cash back since they don't charge for cash transactions. I go there sometimes for the $2.95 vegetarian burrito since I live down the street and sometimes have to rush for work. All I can say is that their food is filling, but tasteless and bland. I agree that the burritos come stuffed mostly with vegetables and dry rice.
