A simply horrendous experience today in Worthington. I came in to work for a couple of hours and grabbed a cup off the countertop. I was asked to move to the back of the line, I can usually get checked out by the person working the register, but I guess there was no dedicated person on the register. I move to the end of the line, no big deal. I check out and I as go to my table the lady at the register mumbles something not very positive as I step away from her, not cool, but ok. I put my stuff down and she says "you're drinking your coffee here, you owe me 28 cents" "28 cents, are you serious?" "Yes" "I come here frequently and have never had this happen" "Well everyone else is wrong" "Ok" I pay 28 cents, tell my work team and will never come back again. read more

Old-world French bistro and bakery with decadent pastries. This was my first time going for breakfast, and haven't been here for many years. We had the breakfast sandwich and coffee special. First of all, the croissants were delicate, flaky and buttery with a slight hint of sweet (undoubtedly from the rich butter). Eggs were fluffy, and the sausage links were fantastic - juicy, flavorful without being overpowering, and reminded me of sausage you'd find in Europe. The coffee was also delicious - full-bodied and flavorful (the Colombian). If I still lived in Columbus, I think I'd be here all of the time, so it's probably a good thing I don't still live in Columbus. What a treat -- definitely worth the visit! read more

The baguette sandwiches are delicious during lunch! I had the ham and swiss baguette, which was great, but when I came back and ordered the same for dinner, the baguette was not as soft, so you have been warned! Also, make sure you clarify that you want the baguette sandwich, not the regular! The French onion soup comes with the cheese and croutons on the side and was savory without being too salty. The fruit tart was fresh and light - a perfect way to end the night. The atmosphere is very cozy and cute, and the wait staff was courteous enough. For far too long La Chatelaine was 2nd on the restaurant queue - it turns out that was a big mistake. We really enjoyed the dishes here and the quaint atmosphere and French decor was quite charming. Our dinner was sans dessert (probably another big mistake) but all of the main course items were fantastic. The obvious winner was their escargot which oozes with flavor and sublime texture. From that down to something more under the radar, their house ketchup was the low-key star. Only in mainland Europe have I had anything that nuanced and with that much depth of flavor. read more

We visited yesterday and we were a bit disappointed. We love the Worthington location but they were closed. We were hoping for the same experience here but it just wasn't the same. The fire was not lit. The floors were dirty. The bookcases dusty and the girls just sitting around giggling and laughing. We were also the only table in there besides one other. I guess work ethics have gone down. We also ordered a plain turkey bag at for our son who has severe food allergies and luckily I looked at it and it was covered in butter and mustard. Drove by this bakery and had to turn around to check it out because it looked so cute with the outdoor patio. The inside is just as charming. There were few people dining in and all spaced out. I got the prosciutto/brie baguette sandwich and breakfast egg sandwich. Such a yummy brunch for us, particularly the baguette sandwich which I will definitely come back for again. I came here for dinner tonight. It's not nearly the first time I've been here but apparently the first time since joining Yelp. I had heard about their Vol au Vent. A chicken and mushroom stew served over a large croisant. It was everything it was cracked up to be. It was large with large pieces of chicken and mushrooms. And reasonably priced at $8.25. For dessert, I had a strawberry tart that was delicious! Large chunks of strawberries covered with a sugary glaze. All in all, a great meal! read more

Say bonjour to Parisian-quality pastry at a Cbus cost, I break every resolution about sugar to get a breakfast goodie here when I'm in town. Almond croissant is my favorite ($3.25), the raisin sticky roll and apricot Danish are equally good choices. Bread at La Chatelaine is similarly excellent, the baguettes ($2.10) are baked fresh and like any great crispy loaf must be devoured within a few hours, somehow I usually manage this trick :). The multigrain is very good but the crust can be overwhelming, seriously difficult to make it into a sammich. One of the few places left with an old-fashioned cafeteria line, the food is pretty good, but the pastries are worth quite a long drive. As of late Feb 2014 they're taking orders for a Mardi Gras King cake complete with the little figures inside, $19. read more

I really used to love la Chatelaine ten years ago, but after living in France, I became a little cynical about this place. I first experienced La Chatelaine while living within walking distance of it in Worthington 10 years ago. Huge fan of sitting on the patio, sipping wine, eating pastries... I now live near a La Chatelaine in Arlington and come here mostly for a couple different desserts and to carry out baguettes. I am enough of a Francophile to go to any French restaurant purely because it's French, but when I'm honest about it, La Chatelaine seems a bit overpriced for what you get. The cuisine is authentic (albeit simple) ... Caesar salads, Croque Madames and Monsieurs, fruit tarts, peasant bread, baguettes and French onion soup - but I've never been wow'ed by anything. Can't tell you how many times I've had limp Caesar salads. I find most of the sandwiches to be good, but not great. after having a full meal, I rarely leave feeling satisfied. The desserts, however, are wonderful! The tarts and mousse au chocolat are as good as the French pastries you can get in Paris! That's enough to get me through the door once a week. I also like the happy hour specials, which consist mostly of French wines by the glass and great martinis. The restaurant has a few different rooms which are subtly rustic and cozy, but I am not exactly transported to France when I eat at La Chatelaine. I just try to appreciate it for the things I really enjoy- the breads and pastries and sipping wine on the patio. C'est la bonne vie. read more

I've been looking for a good source of French pastries since I moved to Cbus last year and decided to give Le Chatelaine a try. My husband and I each got 1 thing from the pastry case, a breakfast entree, and coffee or tea. It has a good setup if you're only interested in one vs the other, and if you want both it's not difficult to get something from the pastry counter and merge right on into the food line. I got the smoked salmon scramble and a croissant, and my husband got a mille-feuille/Napoleon and an entree that I can't recall. My smoked salmon was just fine, and so was the croissant. Not bad, but still not quite on par with the croissants that I've had at a few other French bakeries in my former city. It didn't look or taste the freshest, though it didn't taste stale either. The Napoleon was very sweet, almost too sweet for my husband to finish. All in all, my husband thought it was just "ok" and I thought it was slightly better than OK. I would probably return, though, because I thought the decor was cute and inviting. read more

I like to go here for lunch; the prices seem more reasonable to me. There is a baked goods counter where you can get croissants, baguettes, or cake to go. Another counter is like a cafeteria line where you grab a tray and your silverware, tell the person what you want, and they prepare it for you or tell the kitchen what you want. Wow! I went to this place for the first time within hours of hearing it and it blew me away. The charming, quaint décor and the small but pleasing menu make this French bakery and bistro my new favorite lunch spot in Columbus- I can't wait to go back for dinner in hopes of having a new favorite restaurant. La Chatelaine is divided into three basic sections: the bakery, with its pastries and other baked goods ready to take out; the restaurant area, which works sort of like a cafeteria and sort of like a deli; and a bar, which I decided to skip on at eleven in the morning (one of my companions decided otherwise, and had a large Belgian beer from the tap). I made a beeline for the cafeteria-like section and ordered from the lunch menu a croque-monsieur and a fresh lemonade. I remembered croque-monsieurs from high school French classes but had never had one before, Despite being only half-warm as it comes pre-prepared, it was absolutely delicious, and but for a lack of funds I would have had another. Yes, a whole one. The fresh lemonade was also a treat- sweet enough but also tart enough. For dessert my girlfriend and I shared a blueberry tart. The blueberries were fresh and juicy, but the real star was the crust, which seemed a little too hard but had a perfect crunch once I tasted the reward of my tort-cutting effort. Yelp to the Rescue! Today was yet another shining moment where Yelp came through for me in helping me decide where to eat. Sunday Brunch was the search of choice and La Chatelaine French Bakery & Bistro was the answer to my requirements of cheap and delicious. The first thing that struck me when I entered was "This place is so cuuute!", and it really is. All wood with faint rose colors. The front cash register is for the bakery goods including delicious tarts, cakes and croissants. The register at the rear is where you can order breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some foods are pre-made, sitting on a hot plate and ready to serve, others are made to order. I spotted Brie and Prosciutto Baguette on the menu and thought "My favorite cheese with my favorite meat, I'm in love!". And it was delicious, with plenty of salty prosciutto and creamy Brie. My dining companions complained over the portions, but they are used to big meaty American Sized meals, while La Chatelaine stays true to it's European ties. Small portions, perfectly prepared and enough flavor to hold you over. The boyfriend and I split a Blueberry Tart for dessert. The dough was hard and crispy and tasted like Christmas Cookies. There was a creamy center and topped with juicy blueberries. Delicious, though a tad pricey. La Chatelaine has a small bar as well as a nice patio, both of which I did not explore. I have great memories of this place. I went here while a student at Ohio State on a date so naturally, I thought it was pretty romantic. I love French bakeries and food so this was a no brainer choice for me. Loved the atmosphere, liked that the servers spoke a little French and loved the dishes too. I recommended my sister to go here recently and she enjoyed herself as well. I like this location the best since I used to live right on W. Lane Ave near campus. The cafeteria style ordering was confusing, and for the prices they charge, I would expect at least someone to clear the tables more often so that customers didn't have to. I ordered the lunch special for $9.99 which comes with a cup of soup, petite Cesar salad, and sandwich (if you could call one piece of ham and Swiss on a dinner roll a sandwich). The portions are small, I ended up leaving the place still hungry. I tried shoving some bread down before I left but the bread was stale and hard! I enjoy going to lunch at La Chatelaine and sitting on their patio. I typically get their caesar salad and I add salmon. That does take a little longer to prepare, but I appreciate that. I love bread, but I do find that their baguettes are on the harder side. Don't get me wrong, I still eat the bread, but I sometimes actually stab myself in the roof of my mouth when eating it. I have just had to become more careful. My guess is that their bread is very authentic (French) and I am more use to the American way. The employees are always happy and friendly. If you listen closely, you will even hear french intermingled in some of the employees conversations. I love the feel at La Chatelaine. I also, love their desserts. I love supporting local, and I have a feeling that La Chatelaine could benefit from all of us stopping by for a bite in or a bite to go. Please keep them in mind if you are in the area. read more

I was really prepared to like this place. A friend and I went for breakfast. He got the breakfast special and I got a provencal omelet. His breakfast had more eggs than potatoes and the potatoes were not at all browned. His bacon was limp and greasy, but there was a little bit of cooked vegetables on the potatoes which was probably the best thing on the plate. My omelet was supposed to contain Swiss cheese and ratatouille. That was not ratatouille. It was more like a piperade, which would have been fine if anything tasted good. Everything was mysteriously bland, almost like they had found a way to take salt out of the food instead of adding any. I got sourdough toast which was no more browned than the potatoes. It was dry warm bread. Eggs are from a carton and taste pasteurized. I got a French press of green tea, which is a clever way to serve it if you want someone to spill half of it. That wasn't much of a problem though since the tea was undrinkable. I saw Japanese green tea and was excited but for some reason it was sweet. $13 for this experience was too much for too little of a bad thing. read more

Even the worst Parisians I've met were not as haughty as the order taker in the Dublin, OH restaurant I encountered this morning. Admitting I was unfamiliar with their odd cafeteria type ordering, I was engaged as if I was a Martian. I ordered an omelette without meat or cheese with the "chef" standing in the doorway to the kitchen. Yes, he made certain Swiss cheese was in my omelette anyway & the veggies were nearly non-existent. While the food was very forgettable, the cashier was pleasant. I would have complained about the omelette, but I suspected other undesirable substances may have been in the replacement. La Chatelaine is the real deal. I visited today for lunch and loved it. The croque-monsieur sandwich (ham, emmental cheese and bechamel sauce on bread) was delightful. The soup of the day was a delicious cream of potato with tasty herbed croutons. Plus, they had the old French standby Orangina to drink! The ambiance is pretty authentic -- nice and cramped. If you come at lunch, you'll practically be sharing a table with other customers. Just like in France! My only complaint would be the restaurant's cafeteria-style set-up. I ordered the lunch special. 1/2 sandwich, soup and salad. Salad was soggy, as the dressing had been on it for a while. Dressing wasn't special. I would not at all recommend their Caesar salad. I had French onion soup which tasted like bullion and was luke warm, with very few onions. Sandwich was a slice of Turkey and a slice of Swiss cheese on a homemade roll, but no lettuce and very dry, with only a tad of mustard on it. Btw, no one asked our preference of condiment. I was, however, asked if I wanted croutons and cheese for our two soups, to which I replied "yes, please," unaware that our little dixie cups of croutons and cheese would cost $1 extra per dixie cup. Although, in hind sight, I'm glad I wasn't told about the extra charge because I may have declined them, and the dixie cup additions were the best part of the meal. The sandwich roll was so hard it left the roof of my mouth in shreds - literally, and I only ate half a sandwich. The man ringing me up (perhaps the owner?) charged me an extra dollar (he charged me for 3 dixie cups instead of two) and was very rude, so I asked for a refund of my dollar. He wasn't even nice or sorry about it. He kind of fought me on the subject, but oh well. This will be a once and done experience. I don't recommend this restaurant based on my experience. read more

If you've never been before, you take a tray and go down an aisle with it, pick a few side items, and then order your main dish - which they bring out to you. I got the tomato soup and prosciutto n' brie sandwich on a baguette. I wasn't expecting the sandwich to literally just be brie n' prosciutto... it was extremely bland, and I stopped eating it after 2 bites. The tomato soup was actually pretty good, but a very small portion. For those two things, I ended up paying about 17 bucks... which is a little too high in my opinion. I simply adore the quaintness of LaChatelaine. It appears to lean toward the pretentious side of life, but really, it's a quiet get away from reality. I'm keen on imagining and pretending. I like to pretend that I am on a vacation in the French countryside slowly savoring my caprese salad and tomato basil soup (which is wonderful), as if I had all the time in the world. It's a cafeteria like dining experience. You get your own tray and utensils, order from the counter, either from what's on the menu or from what's visible behind the glass. You're drink request is fulfilled at the end of the line. Then you can choose to sit at any of the old wooden tables. I've always gone to the Dublin location which is a million times better but today I went to the Lane Ave location since it's close to my work. I've always loved the food at La Chatelaine but the Lane Ave location is awful. First the staff is rude. I asked for my sandwich to be warm and the staff member rolled his eyes. Ive never once had to ask for a warm sandwich at the dublin location. They ask you if you would like a warm or cold sandwich. I then asked if he would also be getting my cup of soup I had asked for and he said no so the cashier had to come and help me after waiting for two minutes. When my sandwich arrived the bread was lukewarm and my turkey was still very cold. I've never had this issue at the dublin location and I've been there hundreds of times. Spare yourself the hassle and go to the dublin location. Friendly staff, warm food, and all around better. read more

Worst eggs Benedict I've ever had. Egg came out barely cooked. I love a properly poached egg, but not one with still liquid white. To the servers credit he brought it back but the second wasn't much better. The bread was tasty but the hollandaise sauce was separating and must have been just sitting on a broiler since last night. The whole set up just seemed very lazy to me, which is a shame because the wife and I enjoy a good French restaurant. Crazy thing was her croque monsieur looked worse than mine.
