Tried La Casa Gelato recently and went with the Salted Caramel and Green Tea Cheesecake flavors. The salted caramel was a bit disappointing -- it tasted more like vanilla with barely any caramel or saltiness to it. The green tea cheesecake was better; it had little cheesecake chunks mixed in, which was a nice touch, but the flavor wasn't really infused throughout the gelato -- more like plain green tea with cheesecake pieces added in. Interesting place to visit since it is vibrant and unique in how it offers 238 flavors. I came for the experience, but the flavor of the gelatos was quite lackluster. I am so incredibly disappointed with this experience. I have been coming here with my dad and sister since we were kids. We've had and tried so many flavors. I moved to the U.S. in 2020 and was excited to come back in 2024 and for my husband to try La casa gelato as no longer plant-based. I had hyped it up soooo much, raving about how they use real fruits, real ingredients and flavors. The first thing - they don't offer samples anymore. What exactly is the point of 238 flavors if you don't offer samples....people must pre-pay for the scoop and guess out of 238 which they might like. At the very least...charge 25 or 50 cents per sample or something. I got the durian since we both love durian and I had gotten the durian here soooo many times over the years. I did find it odd that there was no lid covering it like they always used to have. Also, when the gelato was scooped into the cup it was soooo soft and mushy.... I cannot even begin to express the disappointment and disgust that the durian gelato brought. It didn't taste like durian anymore, it was like bad flavoring. There were no real durian chunks in it like there used to be. I had one bite, my husband had one bite and then we threw it away. It was inedible. Disgusting. My husband loves lychee and I've also had that so many times in the past and I raved about how it's so good and you can't go wrong with any fruit flavor since it's real fruit. But the lychee was terrible. It had a weird chewy film like as if it were super old. Which makes sense since you can't get samples anymore so I'm sure a lot of the gelato sits there for a long time before they're emptied. The other flavor he got coconut red rice....so gross. We also threw it away. So again, what is the point of bragging about having 238 flavors if you don't offer samples. It's almost like they know the gelato is so bad now so they don't want you to sample because if you did sample you probably wouldn't end up buying anything. It's almost like they put that trash can right outside the door to make it easy to throw away the terrible gelato. I am not kidding - this was THE worst gelato or ice cream I've ever had in my entire life. And I was so mortified at how much I hyped it up to my husband and for it to be that bad. What a waste of money and shockingly bad experience. Also, the place used to always be so busy. When we went there were only a couple other people in there. So incredibly disappointed and saddened. But not only that - I'm mad because we were at a really good ice cream shop before this where my husband had a cone w/ 2 scoops and he has a big sweet tooth and wanted to get another cone but we decided to save the room for La casa gelato which ended up being a huge waste of an experience, drive, time, money and we could've had way better than this garbage. BUT I find it more of a novelty place than a serious Gelateria. This isn't the original location but they made a great move. Look for the really large PINK building and you know you've arrived. They have a parking lot across the street and a sitting area as well. They are packed during the summer months. There is street parking too. Things to know. They stop samples.. because after having 100+ mini scoops of gelato, why do you need to buy one! Also, people take waaaaaaaay too much time deciding on a flavour. I was told by one guy that some people have been known to stay for over an hour trying to decide. See.. there can be too much of something! Staff is nice, place is clean, bring cash or debit - because you have no credit here, LOL! I learned a while back that real gelato does not melt like ice cream and other treats that have too much water in it - info from a Gelato Maestro. I did not believe my friend before coming here that there would be an "unbelievable amount" (ironic) of gelato flavors, but there is. There's over 200 flavors and you can have anything you could imagine, from classic mint chocolate chip or vanilla to durian and balsamic vinegar. When we went, the place was fairly empty with 2-3 people working. There's a huge center area, with each side with rows of gelato. Sadly, there were no free tastings, so you just had to go off the name of the flavor (and man there are a lot). It may take you awhile to choose a flavor like me, but the staff are super patient. I ended up getting a double scoop. Overall, the flavor of the gelato is okay (I forgot which two I ended up getting). I loved it here, always thought it was the best place for ice cream. I just went again recently, my sister in law from Thailand was visiting. It was beyond disappointing. It's all brisk and business like, no longer feels like a family owned place, but feels more like an impersonal machine. I totally understand not giving away endless samples, but maybe giving out even 2 samples per paying customer would be enough. I'd love to something new before committing to a $6.50 single scoop. But no... so now you go there and are limited to what you know. Which greatly reduces the joy of going. I can get samples elsewhere and try new things, not sure why I would come here then. My kid insisted on getting strawberry, which of course I knew he wouldn't like but he's 3.5 years old only. So we get it, and we get another because of course he didn't want more than a couple or bites. I would have happily paid for 2 single scoops so we can both get what we like. We used to go to Vancouver and visit La Casa Gelato every summer. Life changed and we went for gelato last week for the first time in maybe 15 years. Not much has changed. You do pay in advance now; I don't remember that from the way-back days. A cup with two scoops and a cup with one scoop cost CAD16.50 or so. They have a wild array of flavors, but they don't offer samples anymore, so select at your own risk. (Ube Oreo or chocolate chili, anyone?) I didn't love my amaretto cherry chocolate because the amaretto base wasn't creamy. That's a risk. The dairy flavors are made with milk, not cream. It's gelato, not ice cream. There's no inside seating, but you can sit it a walled garden adjacent to the parking lot. (Parking!) It's a 5-star experience (friendly staff!), with a 4-star product. We were out for a family dinner and my mother in law wanted to try La Casa Gelato for dessert as she'd heard about it so many times over the years but had never gotten to try it; so that's where we went! They appear to carry other sweets in their shop besides gelato. I have rarely come here over the years so I can't remember if it's always been like that, or if that's a new addition to their shop. I've been coming to La Casa since I moved to Vancouver in 1996. That's nearly three decades. La Casa Gelato's impressive selection of 238 flavors is what sets you apart from other ice cream shops. Flavors like lavender, basil, durian fruit, pear and gorgonzola, wasabi, and chai tea are intriguing and adventurous, but often unfamiliar to most customers. Sampling These Unique Flavors Allows Us To Explore Your Offerings With Confidence, Leading To More Informed And Enthusiastic Purchases. In my experience, and I know many would agree, the opportunity to try a flavor first often leads to purchasing a full scoop or even a larger order. Samples encourage customers to venture beyond their comfort zones, exploring the diverse options you provide. Without samples, customers might hesitate to try new flavors, which could limit their choices to more conventional ones, potentially impacting sales negatively. This is one of those spots that will keep you coming back over and over again. I started coming here as a kid when my uncle would take me whenever I'd visit him. Although it had been a while since I visited this spot is just as amazing as a I remember. They have so many flavours it easily takes you 15 minutes just to walk around and see what flavours you'll want to order. From a whole display of chocolate related flavours to the classics the options really do feel endless. After all they hold a record for the most flavours available. All around terrible experience! My wife grew up here and was raving about La Casa Gelato so we stopped by on our visit back to Vancouver. Big mistake! First, they don't allow you to sample anymore. 238 flavors and you're supposed to just choose one on a hope and prayer that you'll like it. Why can't they at least do a limit of sampling? I guess this wouldn't be an issue if the flavors were all good. This was not the case. We got three different flavors and they were all so so bad. Lychee, durian and coconut red rice. Lychee and durian were both watery and tasted artificial. The coconut also had a powdery texture and also artificial tasting. I'm sad today. La Casa has been a Vancouver establishment for me, and I always brought my friends who were visiting from out of town. I mean, 238 flavors on location? That's amazing. But my experience today has shattered my trust. I had a single scoop of the apple pie ice cream, and I unfortunately have to say that it was the worst ice cream scoop I've ever had in my life. It tasted like cardboard rice soaked in cinnamon sugar water with some sawdust-like graham crackers mixed in. It was overly sweet, with a grainy texture on my tongue. And $6.25 for a single scoop seems overpriced. Single scoops at artisan ice cream shops like Earnest and Rain or Shine are a full dollar cheaper. I took one bite and had to throw it in the trash. La Casa Gelato is a must-try if you are in the Vancouver area and have the means to get to the suburbs! Before you come, just know that they don't take American credit cards but they do take American cash. However, you will get change back in Canadian currency. So be prepared! They offer 238 gelato flavors, some of which are very unique and cannot be found anywhere else. Because of COVID, you cannot sample flavors and I think some of their flavors are not available. I decided to get the Salted Caramel and Ferrero Rocher. I'm a huge fan of hazelnut, so the Ferrero Rocher was a must-try. The Salted Caramel went along really well with the Ferrero Rocher. The portion sizes are also HUGE, especially for the amount that you pay. The quality of the gelato is really great and I would definitely come back to try other flavors. read more

It was a fun experience to see so many varied flavors to choose from, and taste. I wasn't brave enough to try anything spicy or really strange but did try maple bacon. Settled on something more middle of the road. Oddly enough they didn't have grape-nut which is a popular flavor in Eastern Canada. Kids go crazy here so be prepared for that! I haven't been here in a really long time and decided to venture back. Come to realize they no longer allow samples for their 238 flavours. For me, that's a reason I would not return as I decided to try a different flavour that turned out to taste like pepto bismol (pink vanilla cotton candy). I understand the reason as it's inflation but customers should be allowed a couple samples or even one -- so you can make sure the flavour isn't gross so you can make sure you walk away satisfied. Besides the novelty of having SO many flavours, once you eat real gelato or ice cream, you'll find this place has some weird sugary consistencies and the flavours taste a little off. It's super fun to taste test 5-15 flavours and pick out one, and it's great seeing such a representation of flavours from different regions of the world. I hoofed it over and was immediately overwhelmed when I walked in. The bright lights and colors, and the CRAZY amounts of gelato and sorbetto in the cases that surround you on all sides of the room. Here's the deal: you have to pay first, and then they give you a little wooden chip that indicates what size you're getting. I imagine this is a crowd control measure in the hot summer months, but on my visit there was only one other person there so it seemed like overkill. Whatever, just follow the procedure now that you know it. At this point, a theoretical foodventuring buddy would order three things and I would do the same, thus doubling our sampling. I was in a fruity/sour mood, so I ended up with a pineapple-esque one, a mango and jackfruit, and a lemon one. But seriously, there are hundreds to choose from, and some are exotic (durian) and some are disgusting (black licorice, don't even get me started) and some are plain vanilla. I think whatever the actual product lacks in quality, is surely made up for in quantity. More precious and handcrafted stuff exists in the world, but as an adventure to try it was worth the trip.
