The famed Buenos Aires steakhouse with a location in Coconut Grove did not disappoint. I finally had an opportunity to check out La Cabrera after a cigar at nearby Coco Cigars. I took advantage of their 4 course $60 dinner special (not listed on their website but offered every day, including weekends) and went with the Caesar Salad, 14 oz skirt steak, fries and flan. Each dish was very good, the steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, the fries were crispy and good, and the flan was probably the best I've ever had. I enjoyed a very good glass of Malbec reserve with my meal. La Cabrera also offers a $39 lunch special. Ambiance was charming and the service was also very good. After enjoying a fantastic dinner here back in January for my wife's birthday, it felt only right to return to La Cabrera Coconut Grove in August to bring my wife's father for a Miami Spice Lunch outing. A restaurant that still comes to mind months later is usually doing something right, and this visit confirmed what we loved about our first experience. We made reservations without any issues a couple of days before. The restaurant was clean, bright, and had not filled up yet with the busy Sunday family crowd. Upon being seated, we were provided with the regular menu and the Miami Spice Lunch menu. The Miami Spice Lunch, which has now become a daily Executive Lunch special, is a standout value. The portion sizes and the quality of the Argentinian steaks speak for themselves. As a group, here's what we ordered: Starters - Ham and Cheese Empanadas - Morcilla - Grilled Provolone Each starter delivered exactly what you'd expect from an Argentinian steakhouse. The empanadas were warm and flaky, the morcilla was rich and well seasoned, and the grilled provolone came out bubbling and perfect for sharing amongst our table with the restaurant's complementary bread basket. Entrée: - New York Strip Steak, 12 oz This was the only cut of steak we ordered. It was cooked to each of our desired temperatures and seasoned simply, letting the quality of the beef speak for itself. It is clear why La Cabrera has a reputation as one of Latin America's best restaurants. Sauces on the side, which included a BBQ sauce, and a chimichurri, were left for our choosing and were used for the side dishes more than anything. Sides: - French Fries - Jasmine Rice Both sides complemented the steak well. The fries were crispy and large in size. My father-in-law, a cuban man who's very serious about his rice dishes, thought the jasmine rice was very good. Dessert: - Dulce de Leche Ice Cream with Cone - Dulce de Leche Pancakes The ice cream was smooth and rich, while the pancakes were finished with a sugary powder coating that was impossible to resist. This lunch reinforced why La Cabrera continues to be stand out in a crowded field of steakhouses. La Cabrera in Coconut Grove started out with good service but this went dwindling due to more tables filling up and not enough servers to attend to them. Food was good and everyone in our party enjoyed their dishes, I have to admit I missed the complimentary tasters provided by the chef at the restaurant in the Midtown location, there the attention was excellent. They have a great variety of options on their menu, allowing you to try different items for a reasonable price. I really enjoyed their steak. The inside is also decorated well. I had seen La Cabrera open up in the Grove and on Friday I went with my dad to try it. This is a restaurant from Buenos Aires and they specialize in grilled meats. Yum. The complimentary bread is delish with olives and a salsa de tomate. There is also a complimentary appetizer that has different dips, which I did not care for. We started with the morcilla and chorizo and also got a 14 oz NY strip and an arugula salad. The salad didn't come with dressing, which I thought was odd, but they do have olive oil and vinegar on the table so that worked perfect for a simple salad. We had also ordered the penne with pesto cream sauce. This was my least favorite dish of the night as it was pretty flavorless. I'm thinking this is a spot to indulge more on quality meats and traditional steakhouse sides versus the pasta. While I did not have a drink, I did see they have a full bar and extensive wine list. This is definitely a spot to go for the meats, as the NY Strip was really great. For such large portions of meat, prices are really reasonable. Will definitely be back to try more things from the menu. They also offer happy hour daily from 11:30 - 6 pm which is great. Mother's Day in a Cuban family is not just "Let's go eat." No no no... it's a full CIA operation. Because taking a Cuban Mom to a restaurant is like preparing a peace treaty between three countries. You have to study the menu... the parking situation... the lighting... the bread quality... and most importantly... what she is going to complain about BEFORE she even gets there. This year we decided to take my Mom somewhere "special." Now usually, La Islas Canarias is the safe move. Every Cuban family in Miami knows this. That place is basically our embassy. But on Mother's Day? You wanna try something a little more elegant. A little more "Ay mira que fino." So my sister finds this place in Coconut Grove called La Cabrera. Their website says: "La Cabrera reinvents the classic Buenos Aires grill by combining top quality cuts with a unique dining experience." Immediately I'm nervous because Cuban mothers don't trust restaurants that use words like "reinvents." My mother sees that and says: "Reinvent what? El bistec ya esta inventado." We get there and they seat us right at the entrance. Not near the entrance. AT the entrance. Like if one more family walked in, somebody was gonna have to eat in valet parking. But okay... no problem... it's Mother's Day... we proceed. Now my mother has restaurant conspiracy theories that have been developing since 1974. Theory #1: If they seat you under a ceiling fan... your food gets cold faster. Theory #2: They give you too much bread so you fill up before the expensive food comes. But this place passed the first test: No ceiling fan. Then the bread arrived. Ay Dios mío. Cheesy. Crispy. Warm. That bread was so good we forgot we were supposed to be pretending to eat healthy. We asked for more... and THEY BROUGHT MORE. That alone in 2026 deserves a Michelin star. Then came olives in oil. Green olives. Black olives. No extra charge. In Miami that's basically considered charity work. Then suddenly... they bring out what looked like a potato science project "on the house." A giant board with: Au gratin potatoes... sweet potato cubes... sweet potato puree... garlic swimming in oil... At this point we weren't even using knives anymore. We were just dipping bread into random sections of the board like raccoons. My Mom looked emotional. Not because of Mother's Day... because she realized all this food was FREE. They offered a 4-course special for $60 and lunch for $39. Most of us got the Burrata with Avocado Tartar. Very good. Real "Ay que fino" food. Repeat after me TAR....TAR , Wow I feel like we are at Los Violines My niece ordered the spinach empanada. Honestly? About the same level as Pinecrest Bakery. Which in Miami Cuban terms is actually a compliment. For the main course: Betty got the salmon.....loved it. My sister and I got steak with butter sauce. Perfect. My niece got mushroom truffle ravioli with buttered tomatoes. No complaints. Then... there was my Mom. The guest of honor. Trying to keep the bill low like she personally pays FPL for the restaurant. This the best Latin American steak house in South America and it finally landed in the Gables-Grove area. I first heard of La Cabrera in Malaga. The Malaga location is yards from the main Cathedral. Like it's Grove brethren it is known for its shareable plates and lollipops at the end. Reservations were easy to come by and the hostess sat us down. As of the time of this writing they didn't have a full liquor license so were comping Malbec! May they never get that license! So good was the Malbec we ordered seconds. They give you complementary bread and some olives. We ordered the Provoleta and it did not disappoint. You could taste the smokiness and the gauchos roasting it on the plains of Argentina over coals in their cast iron skillets. We ordered a 14oz filet and had them split it in half. The entree was served with a side of broccoli and mash. We were unable to even touch the mash; the portions were that generous. My only quibble is that the filet was medium rare when we asked for medium. We sent it back and it came out medium well. A star is docked. The waiter and manager were both incredibly engaging. I believe that unlike the other places that have come and gone in this former Masonic lodge, this one may prove the one that stays the course. read more

I rarely give restaurants low ratings, but our meal at La Cabrera was one of the most disappointing experiences we've had in recent memory. First, I'll list the positives as this place definitely had strong points: The venue is nicely-designed, well-appointed, and I really liked everything about the decor, style and color scheme. Also, service was attentive all night from outgoing staff who went above and beyond, even serving and plating our appetizer dishes at our table for us, and cutting and serving our steaks at our table. That said, this place really falls down on food quality. Most everything we ordered lacked flavor and many of their listed prices are higher than they deserve to be. We're big fans of Argentinian food and dine somewhat frequently at spots like Baires, Graziano's, Novecento and the former Las Vacas Gordas. When we saw La Cabrera, we were excited to try it. Unfortunately the food here is sub-par while the prices are not. We started out with the provoleta ($19) and the chorizo ($12) to share. While the sausage wasn't bad, the provoleta lacked flavor and had an odd texture vs. what we've had nearly everywhere else we've ordered it. It could've also used some time on the grill or under the broiler to form a crust, which was missing. They brought a basket of bread and bread sticks to the table, but the tomato sauce it was served with was basically tasteless. The olives at least had a bit of flavor to them. They later brought a selection of spreads and other items that were "on the house". It contained small servings of eggplant puree, apple sauce, cooked carrots and garlic, I believe diced cooked squash, what looked like au gratin potatoes and one other item. I tried all of it. Each was tasteless aside from the garlic which could at least be smashed with a utensil and spread on the bread for flavor and texture. We had a look at the wine list and while we ultimately ordered a bottle to share, the prices here were high on at least some bottles. Stag's Leap Artemis, for instance, is priced at just a bit more than $100/bottle at one of our usual places for steak. Here at La Cabrera, it's listed for $164. For our main courses we ordered the 1/2 outside skirt steak ($43), the 1/2 New York steak ($42) and a side of mashed potatoes ($8) all to share. The skirt steak was good and very tender. The New York steak was dry and lacked flavor, and the mashed potatoes, like much of what we tried on this night, were a bit bland. When our steaks were brought to the table, they immediately gave us sauces and dry items to dress them up - barbecue and steak sauces, bread crumbs, what looked like a thick cheese sauce with a bit of vegetable in it, and as we were cutting into our steaks, the server brought another full tray of more sauces, rubs and things to add to our meats. I found this very odd because most better-quality restaurants take great pride in the quality of their meats and style of cooking and strongly believe that one shouldn't need to add any sauces or condiments to make them edible or even more enjoyable. Here at La Cabrera they were practically begging people to dip or slather their steaks with condiments. I did try a few dollops of a few of the cups of sauces and crumbs we were given, but wasn't impressed by any of them. At the end of the meal, they brought a tree of lollipops to our table. It had several insects crawling on it. I couldn't identify what they were, but they weren't ants (see video I've posted). When the server gave us the bill there was an automatic service charge of 18% included which has become somewhat standard in the Miami area. When she handed us the payment machine to process our cards, she explained there was a service charge added the check, then the tip amounts listed on the screen for us to select from when signing were for her. I've never had another restaurant present it that way when there is included auto-gratuity. In general, the meal here lacked flavor compared to most every other Argentinian steakhouse I've been to. They seem to have a lot of "stuff" they place on the table for patrons to try - complimentary spreads and purees, steak sauces and things to sprinkle on your meat, but much of it was flavorless and disappointing. On the night we were here there were only 4 people at the bar and 2 other tables with patrons seated at them and to me, the reason it wasn't busier was apparent. La Cabrera needs to improve the taste and quality of the food to make it worthy of the prices charged, or this restaurant will struggle. That's especially true with 1 other Argentinian option already available in the Grove, in addition to lots of other really excellent dining options in this general area for people to patronize. read more

First time at La Cabrera. I'm a sucker for a good piece of skirt steak or authentic Argentinian food. A block away is another similar style of food, but it was time to try something new. Right off the bat the service is good. Hostess greeted us and took us to our table. Our waitress was also good with her service. We ordered our meal which included a skirt steak, shrimp, and some vegetables. The steak was a little under seasoned, which we had to add salt - Not a big issue. One thing I have to say is the chimichurri was made like a mayonnaise style dip, which surely is not authentic. I would suggest to them to please make a real one. Some friends of mine visiting from Paris invited my family and I ( Because I'm Argentine I guess lol) for dinner at La Cabrera. We were greeted very nicely by the host with a smile (which is rare these days at fancy places). The restaurant inside has an elegant vibe to it. We had Janina as our waitress and she was excellent. Gave very good recommendations. My friends asked me to order the food because of my background. We started with the plain provoleta which was delicious. We ended up ordering a second one. It is so good plain, that's why I don't order the one that has toppings. We also ordered the mollejas which were cooked to perfection. Delicious!! We then ordered two cuts of meat as our main dish with two sides. Mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. The meat we ordered was the skirt steak and one called the cowboy something which Janina recommended. My friends like the meat medium rare and I like it medium so they cooked it medium rare and cut it table side and then finished cooking it more for me table side on a hot skillet which I thought was pretty neat and classy. The meat was very good quality with a lot of flavor. To drink we accompanied the meat with Malbec. The second bottle we ordered was a recommendation again by Janina which ended up being very good. It ended up being plenty of food so we had no room for dessert. My kids ended up ordering gnocchi. My son the regular ones and my daughter the stuffed with cheese ones and they were surprisingly great being more of a steak house. So don't think there is only meat. They do have other options as well. The manager Sebastian also stopped multiple times to check on us and he was also super friendly. We had an overall wonderful experience. I do warn you that it is a pricey restaurant, but if you want to splurge, it's well worth it. Enjoy!!!! Excellent food, BUT, be careful and aware. They automatically add an 18% tip. I didn't realize this until I got home. I unknowingly tipped 20% over the already 18% added tip. So the waitress actually got a 40% tip. Now I know........ My bill was $282, including the automatic tip and I tipped an extra 20% on top of that.
