I have been to this place by myself and have been to a few events on campus where their food is served and realize I dread it when the food is from here. I really don't like this place. The meat is not well marinated and does not have much flavor. The beans are also bland and they don't offer refried beans. Even when there's cheese it just doesn't have much flavor. I guess when I'm ordering Mexican food I expect at least some good flavors and salsa and this place just doesn't have it. One of the greats of Durant. While it may not be the most authentic Mexican cuisine, La Burrita is loved by Berkeley students for its late night eats, especially after a long night of going out. They are most known for their nachos and burritos, and I personally love to get both as a combo. Food is always delicious, and it always hits the late night craving for amazing Mexican food. Pretty average Mexican food, nothing too spectacular though not bad. I've hear a lot of people say great things about La Burrita and that it's better than Chipotle, but honestly I feel like they're about the same quality overall. Portions are large and they give a free side of chips as well, so it's definitely worth the cost. However, I thought it was pretty bland without the addition of the salsas that you get serve yourself on the side. I have Snackpass-ed La Burrita a few times and tried a number of different items on their menu. I do think that their burritos are generally filling which is nice, and I appreciate that they include tortilla chips in the bag if you get a takeout burrito. However, especially when this place is busy, I feel that they may be missing out on full marks for quality. Snackpass runs 50% off La Burrita every once in a while, and it seems like the entire city of Berkeley comes to eat here on those days, resulting in long wait times. The notification for when your order is ready in Snackpass is regularly off because it seems that there is no way for the restaurant to sync up with the service. The burritos I have had: the Carne Asada, California Burrito, and La Burrita Special were all pretty good in terms of meat quality but sometimes comes out very dry and is hard to consume without copious amounts of salsa. Personally, I prefer the burritos from Tacos Sinaloa but when walking an extra block seems like too much, La Burrita is not a bad option. read more

I was running out of ideas on what to cook for dinner, so I thought it would be a good idea to order from here; especially, being that it was Cinco de Mayo. The kids agreed that it made sense! I decided to call in while making the drive over, but no one answered so I ended up driving over any way since we were grabbing some drinks next door. When we arrived at around 8:45 PM, the line was pretty long so I figured out why they didn't answer the phone. I made the kids stand in line & wait for our orders since I wasn't in the mood to. We got 3 super burritos and two wet burritos. I usually go with the super burrito, but decided on the wet since my younger sister recommended that I try a wet burrito just for comparison. The burritos are actually not bad, but their green salsas are too sour for my liking. Plus, the kids complained that service wasn't very friendly. I stopped next door for Top Dogs to go and decided to give a classic divey college Mexican place a go. I haven't eaten here in over a decade so I figured why not give it a try. I think, and this is just a hunch...that most of the 5 star reviews are from students and I get that. But in reality once you eat more and more Mexican food here in NorCal you will find this place as I do...mediocre at best. It pains me to say it but it just is not good and I won't be returning. I ordered the Veggie Special Burrito which comes with: Rice, Beans, Lettuce, Salsa Frisca, Cheese, Sour Cream and Guacamole. Unfortunately, mine was very small so I didn't really get a good delination of flavors. Pretty much it all tasted bland, saltless.. I know that the good students at Berkeley love the salsa choices here. I personally am not the biggest fan of salsa which is that communal in this area. I did not partake but I use some cholula green pepper sauce at home and that made it edible. All in all the food was bland, I've had better burritos pretty much every place I've ordered them, including fast food. The service was quick but sloppy. I'll keep to my favorite quick Top Dog next door for sure. If you are hungry at midnight I'm sure you'll love this place and think it's awesome, but give it a few years and a lot more experience in Bay Area Mexican food heaven. read more

Overall the selection and menu is great for late night or if you want some solid Mexican place. But really guys the one secret abotu this place that I'm going to let you in on is the agua Fresca. These days as boba seems to be the rage, the agua Fresca (Mexican juice drink) is legit. Sweet, fruity and refreshing. I go here when im parched and just need a quick pick me up. From strawberry to pineapple to mango, they have assorted flavors. Just try one, you won't regret it. Of course they have the standard horchata but the Agua Frescas are what stand out for me. This is a nice place for a quick meal. The food comes out pretty fast and it also tastes good. It isn't the most authentic or the best Mexican food, but it's good for the price. I got the carne asada special burrito and I liked it. The tortilla was soft and chewy, and I liked how it was really thin, so you could taste more of the fillings rather than the tortilla. There was a lot of sour cream and guacamole in the burrito which I really liked because it ensured that the burrito wasn't dry. The only thing I didn't really like was the carne asada. There wasn't very much carne asada and it wasn't very tender. It was also cut into really thin strips so I couldn't really taste it either. I'm not sure if their closing times are changed but there was a couple times where they closed at 11pm but the website says 1am. So definitely don't make the trip if you're not sure if they decide to close or not. Better to call and order for pick up vs showing up. Was craving a burrito bowl for lunch yesterday and decided to get a steak burrito bowl from here. It was my first time getting delivery from here but I was pretty disappointed. Even though the person I spoke to repeated everything back to me on the phone, they gave me chicken instead of steak and no beans & cheese instead of making it with beans and cheese. They also forgot the chips that I ordered with it, too. Giving them an extra star because they went above and beyond by going to pick it up at the restaurant and getting it back over to me even though I told them not to worry about it by that point. Of the 112 reviews I've written before this one, I have only ever given out 5 1-star reviews. Really, I'm not that picky nor am I a difficult customer- 73% of my reviews are 4s or 5s. But somehow, La Burrita, you managed to land the #6 spot on my 1-star shitlist. I only rate things below a 3-star if you've provided aggressively bad service or killed my pet or something. So, good job La Burrita. La Burrita is characterized by outstandingly bad late night service, like many other late-night places in Berkeley, and I'm not even a tough customer. At this point I'm pleasantly surprised when late-night food places in Berkeley have service that ranks above "horrible" so I guess this experience shouldn't have been shocking. Not sure if the menus don't reflect the actual prices, or if I'm being upcharged without being told so. Either way, very not cool. Ordered a large carne asada burrito on Saturday evening (theoretically $7.70 before tax, according to the menu.) Total came out to $9.69, which is ridiculous. Tax in Berkeley is 9.25%, so where did the rest come from? Guacamole and sour cream that I didn't ask for? I said a large burrito, not a super burrito. Oh and it gets better. A couple of the guys behind the counter were hamming it up with these drunk obnoxious fratstars. Their order numbers are called, they grab their food, business as usual no problem. Whatever. When it comes to my turn and the guy calls my number, he insists on checking my receipt even though I knew what my number and order were (453, carne asada burrito). To make things worse, as he insists on checking my receipt, he's sliding my order back and forth on the counter like he's dangling a fishing lure or something, and I can't just reach out and grab it because the restaurant is packed and hard to move around in. What did I do to you? So not only am I being charged for options on my burrito that I didn't ask for, but I'm getting grilled by the guy for my receipt (when nobody else was) and literally having my food dangled in front of me? "Receipt? Where is your receipt?" It's in my wallet but you didn't ask anyone else for theirs. It's cold, late, and I'm tired. I know my order and have my order number memorized.
