I've been working with Larry for the past year on a tricky kitchen remodel. It involved expanding out one corner of our two story house and lots of careful planning and engineering to account for significant changes to load bearing structures. Larry worked very closely with me through this planning process. He was very responsive to emails, messages, and phone calls. He went the extra mile to explain the details of what was happening at each step of the process, and helped us make well-informed trade-offs and decisions. We haven't done the actual construction yet because of some personal scheduling conflicts, but I have no doubt that Larry and his team would be just as detailed and thorough in that endeavor as they were with the planning. He and everyone he worked with were very respectful and friendly when coming into our home, and cleaned up after themselves if they had to disturb any walls or ceilings. From a cost perspective, this wasn't the most expensive nor the cheapest firm we considered for this project, but knowing that it would be somewhat complex, we wanted to go with someone who would focus on the structural engineering rather than someone who would just get a job done in the cheapest and potentially hackiest way possible. This is review is specifically for those who are renovating their home with minimal knowledge on construction like me. Home renovation is a complex process and everyone's experience is unique. I am writing this review to share my experience so that any one reading this will not fall in the pit . To give a background, both myself and wife are working IT professionals. So we want to work with a architect/contractors who are experienced , knowledgeable and trust worthy. We thought we could spend extra few dollars to go with the right person. After talking with many of them, we narrowed down with Larry. Yelp Reviews and recommendation from my neighbor helped to make a decision to go with L E baca. Going with L E Baca construction was not cheap. Just for architectural. drawing he charged us 15K. Apart from that, we have to structural which is 5K and MEP which is 3.5K. For the co-rodination, Larry takes the commission of 20 percent. It is easily 30 percent more than the market rate. But I thought I am paying for the experience. But experience is a double edge sword. People can have more experience and they can be flexible with new ideas. Some others who are experienced are rigid with their thoughts and not up to date with current market.. Unfortunately L E baca belong to second one. The second thing I believed was architect being local. They boast they know the inspectors and they will get the plans/inspections approved easily. The reality is the city inspectors dont care as long as it meets the city codes. There could be other architects who can be close. But from my experience with dealing with city, they just follow the rules. No short cuts. The third items which still pisses me is design related item where we want the wall to be removed between the kitchen and living room. My wife insisted of not having the wall. But Larry told that structurally it is not possible without seeing inside of the home. Yes, he did the drawing without coming inside the home and the reason was covid. I can understand tat and I have to take the measurements. So reluctantly both my wife and Myself accepted that we couldn't remove the wall and agreed to submit to the city. With three revisions from the city we got the plan approved. By this time, we decided not go with L E Baca for the construction part and started shopping around. Then we found another construction who were interested in the project. They came to my home and saw the plan. They told that wall should be removed to give the open living room. Initially I was reluctant as we have to again work with L E baca. But the new contraction company showcased their current construction home. We got sold off of removing the wall. So I need to get in touch with Larry as he will not share the CAD soft copy. He wanted to me charge additional 4000$ just to make changes on the drawing with structural and MEP. I paid those money just to get done with him. It is not the end. During the construction phase, my construction company demolished the wall on day one. They told beam is not required at all. We had to fight and pay extra 4K for all this. His statements on the plan were very vague . He will mention that architect has to be contacted before making any changes, But he was not even interested in talking couple of mins to them. There are in another horror story as well. But the review is already too lengthy. Overall, It was very bad experience and never wish any one to undergo this. Not even to my dread full enemies. Fortunately my construction company was helpful to over come this and home is finally completed. My entire project from start of planning to the final inspection took exactly two years. I contacted L.E. Baca through email to see if they could possibly take a remodeling job. I also decided to call and the nice lady on the phone said it's possible that they could come to my house and give an estimate, I told her I would confirm with my family and give her a call back tomorrow to confirm a date and time. Fast forward an hour and I get an email saying that they won't be able to take on this job, because it's too small. How is remodeling the entire front portion of your house a small job?! Working with Larry was a pleasure. He was always on time (personally and with his crew) and working many steps ahead to ensure s smooth process. Larry has years of experience, and leverages that for his clients advantage. He started us off with a meeting to see what we wanted to get out of the project. He gave us great feedback to let us know what was realistic and what was not. He held several meetings to get our planning right. We were involved in every step of the process, and had complete control. As we were told up front, and learned, a remodel can be as expensive or as cost effective as you need it to be. Larry helped us get our plans drawn up, and emphasized that we had to do what was right structurally for the house. He had his structural engineer run calculations for us, and made sure that our home would be safe for the long term. He got all of our plans approved in one day! There was no back and forth with the city on what we could or couldn't do. This is another testament to his value add because of his experience. Larry and his crew were respectful of us during the entire process. They were always professional and on time. Our home is better than new construction because his crew and subcontractors did quality work. They are all consummate professionals. He has great contacts, whether it be electrical, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, cabinetry, Windows, doors, flooring. The list could go on and on. Larry uses local contacts that perform at a high level, and meet his quality, work ethic, and ethical standards. I would highly recommend L E Baca Construction to anyone I know. I would trust Larry and his company with my parents or even grandparents homes because I know he would treat them right, and get it done right the first time. I worked with Larry on our home remodel. We added 600 sq ft and basically changed the entire layout of the original floorplan. Throughout all of this, Larry was able to help me make crucial decisions by explaining the pros and cons of many of my options. Ultimately, his crew did a fantastic job on my house. We decided to go with LE Baca Construction because it was a lot easier to go with a company that has a all in one type of service. Meaning, that when we started our project we had a certain budget to work with and that way Larry was able to come up with a design that kept us within our budget, rather than having an architect design something for us and not knowing if we would be able to afford that with a separate builder in the end. Larry was very honest during our design phase; if we asked for certain things he would say if it would keep us within budget or not. It made it so easy to only deal with one person throughout the whole process, from designing the house, to permits and then construction. During our construction phase, I think it went pretty smooth. Our house was built in the 1950's, so we couldn't exactly know what surprises we were going to deal with until it was inspected. But, I have to say that even before it was inspected Larry mentioned a few things to expect, like asbestos, foundation or pipe issues, etc. His comments gave us a more clear idea of how much money we needed to prepare for this project. That's to show, how knowledgeable he is in his field of work. Larry does have very good contacts. My husband and I were very happy with all of the subcontractors that worked on our project. They were all very professional and what I liked most is that they cleaned very good after they were done, and they didn't do a sloppy job. My neighbor whom is also a contractor, would come over often and look at the house. He mentioned many times that the house was built very well and that the subcontractors that Larry chose, used very good materials; like the lumber that was used or even the brand of mud the sheet rockers used. My neighbor is a very picky person and it made me feel good to hear him say, that to him Larry is a very good and knowledgeable contractor that used the best materials for our house. Also, Larrys inspections passed every single time. We were very pleased with Larry. He is very knowledgeable. He has good work ethics. He listened to our needs. He was always on time to our meetings. He always answered our questions through phone calls, texts, or emails. I have to say that Larry became like part of our family. My kids like him and even our family dog gets excited when Larry comes to our house for meetings. We would definitely recommend Larry to our friends and family. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Larry and getting to know him over the course of the past few years, as he worked on a major house renovation for me. The project was massive - 535 square feet were added, but on top of that, virtually the entire house was redone in some sort of way. This includes two new bedrooms upstairs, a new living room downstairs (requiring foundation), a brand new bathroom, two bathroom remodels, and a bunch of other changes/knocked down walls, etc. Larry was my "one stop shop" - he handled architecture, permits, subcontractors (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, paint) and I completely trusted him with the project and house, so much so that I gave him my house keys and left town while he and his team did their work. So yes, it was a massive project. On top of the scope, COVID-19 hit the US, right in the middle of things. Larry had to adapt to the new regulations but kept in close contact and communication with me throughout. Despite the anxiety due to the pandemic, I was comfortable with Larry's handling of things throughout. He took our needs seriously, and did what he could to keep the project on track. When all was said and done, we moved into a beautiful home, that was essentially brand new.
