I hit the jackpot when Tarlan Ghavami assisted me! I told her what I had in mind (and that I was also open to her suggestions.) She spent a lot of time with me, until I found the perfect frames! Tarlan told me which frame would best complement the shape of my face and my skin/hair coloring, etc. When I asked her opinion about a specific frame, she answered honestly and explained the reason. (I totally trusted her judgment, because I loved her personal style.) Tarlan also helped me understand all the optional features, such as anti-reflective and UV protection and transition lenses with blue light... I take my eyeglass frames very seriously, because I think of them to be, by far, my most important accessory. Everyone sees them, and you wear them for at least a couple years. They reflect your personality. I know this sounds OCD, but I actually spent hours Googling "Best Eyeglass stores in LA" before I even started shopping. Then I visited at least 5 of the "top 10 eyeglass frame stores" (Lux, Hye, etc.) before l.a.Eyeworks! At the other stores, I found frames that were "just okay." The thing I love most about l.a.Eyeworks (besides working with Tarlan) is that they carry a unique selection of frames you won't find anywhere else! That sounds like a commercial advertisement. LOL. I was pressured into purchasing frames on the spot, only to discover later that ordering through my optometrist would have saved me an additional $180 in insurance coverage. This week I had an emergency with a pair of my LA Eyeworks glasses. The staff at the Fairfax store were superb! They solved my issue with skill and grace. I have had continued success with this company for over twenty-five years. I had been a fan of LA Eyeworks frame designs well before I had to succumb to wearing glasses. Their ad campaigns in the late 70s into the 80s were brilliant. So when I needed frames, I shopped the sales and usually scored a few pairs. I paid $1700 for three pairs of glasses (two of which were made with frames I brought with me). I had to get the prescription changed because it wasn't right--I went back to my ophthalmologist who wrote a new Rx--and LA Eyeworks remade the the three pairs of glasses. When I tried on the new pairs and said I was having a hard time seeing, the store manager seemed irritated--as if I was trying to be difficult--and basically told me they'd made the glasses exactly as written and turned her back on me, as if to say, case closed. My reading glasses are fine, but I need to have the focal point alignment corrected in my regular glasses and sunglasses and will go elsewhere. I don't feel comfortable going back this store for fear of being treated like an annoyance. On a side note, Ori is terrific and couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. read more

After 7+ years of getting basic eye exams annually in Japan at LensCrafters type places (for prescription / not full proper exam), I noticed some nighttime driving issues and decided to get my eyes really checked. My current pair is 2 years old so it was time! I chose LA Eyeworks bc I got some really fab frames at their Big Sale, so figured I would get both exam and lenses taken care of here. Optometrist Natalie is incredible!!!!!!! The exam took around 45 min and she was extremely thorough. The equipment is top of the line and office was comfortable and clean. She was patient with all my questions and talked me through everything - v educational! Warning - they dilate your eyes!! I totally forgot about this part but they gave me rolled shades to put over my glasses haha...! The price of the exam was very fair for out of pocket cost (under $150). Please note, they only give exams on Tues and Thursdays and everything (including browsing store) is by appointment for now bc of c19. Picking up my new glasses was delightful and efficient. I had to make an appointment to do it, where I received special attention for fitting the glasses, adjustments and ensuring my vision was ok with the new lenses. Basically a private session! I am kicking myself for forgetting the name of the wonderful lady who helped me, but she was chic AF and had Akita dogs (LOL the things I remember hehe). Back in the old days LA Eyeworks used to stock many brand name/artsy/up and coming designers (Air Titanium, Oliver Peoples, etc.) , but about 8-10 years ago they realized their strength... their own designs. The regular price on frames can be pricey, at around $250 and up for plastic frames and $350 and up titanium frames. But don't complain, you're paying for cutting edge design. That's why you're here right? (Did you know Elton John buys 5-20 frames a year from them, granted I'm sure he buys glasses everywhere, but still, the guy knows his glasses). Every September or October they have their annual sale. 90% of the current regular stock is packed away and they bring out everything they have in the closet... you may find some frames from the current year at 30% off (from $350 down to $250), or you might some $400 frames that released five years ago for $60. The sale is madness, but it's the best frame sale in all of California. During the sale, frames range from $25-$300, with most of the frames 60%-80% off retail, making them in the $50-$150 range. What a steal! I wear my glasses all day everyday so it's important that I find one that I like and will enjoy wearing. As fashionable and as persona changing as LA Eyeworks frames are (trust me, if you get a bold pair, people will see you differently), the most important thing is fit. Find a frame that fits your face shape, fits your head size, then work on the color. You can turn yourself into a hot librarian, Bono, or Spike Lee. Today I left the store with three frames. Two titanium frames ($55 each), and one pair of titanium sunglasses ($30, where I'm going to swap out the tinted lenses for regular prescription lenses). $140 for $1000 worth of frames. Awesome deal! If you choose to get your prescription filled there, their lens cutters are first rate (their lens prices are a tad higher and you can't use your Eyemed insurance there). They set the lenses to rest in the frame in the most flattering way possible and the lens quality is awesome. I have been to other optometrists and discounters that have given me new glasses with warped lenses, or they lens cutter didn't know how to set the lens so that they would lie flush with the frame. How do you mess up lenses? Trust me, other stores do. Better get out there, the annual sale is this weekend. read more

If you are seeking a pair of unique glasses to fit your unique personality, this place is for your. Seriously, it feels like a bag of Skittles exploded in their store. The amount of color options is incredible as are the unique frame styles they carry. If you're serious about your eyewear and want to stand out, then I highly recommend you stop by for a visit. One tiny note, beware of sticker shock. Yes, their frames and lenses are expensive, but you get when you pay for. Seriously, their lenses are cut with such precision that it feels like I wearing my contact lenses (minus the peripheral vision part) every time put them on . . . no funky distortion whatsoever. Also, another cool thing I enjoy, is the fact that I still have yet to see another living soul with my exact glasses. The store is a nice size for an optical shop, and it's right on Melrose, in the most popular section, so you can do some fun people watching while you shop. Shitty cutstomer service. After we spent many hudreds of dollars at the Melrose store, we wanted to come back for more glasses during this year's sale. We called and emailed multiple times, trying to find out when the sale was (we were told we'd get an email notification and never did), left messages, sent emails to make an appointment as the store's voicemail instructed. Today we discovered that the sale had taken place without anyone ever getting back to us. Clearly customers are not valued at this store. A fabulous place for unique designer frames and custom lenses only thing is things have changed at LA EW over the years and as a consequence there have been some unfortunate changes to the unique formula that made it such a great place for entertainers and creative people. A couple months ago I splurged on a pair of glasses from LA Eyeworks. The original retail price continues to give and give and give. First, I like my glasses. More, the whole experience is a shrine to Los Angeles and a certain life-of-the-mind. Recently, I went in for an adjustment. On a back wall there was the Diane Arbus photograph of a naked, glasses-wearing crazy. Next, there was a bowl of bullfrog tadpoles. One tad had small legs and the others just had nubbins. Turns out bullfrog tadpole nubbins can take a year to reach maturity. Then in walks a little piece of L. A. heaven. She is a well-maintained lady of thirty or sixty (hard to tell). She is a Pilates instructor. She polled everyone for an opinion on each of the twelve or so frames she tried on. Everyone. All twelve. She resolved that next she should go home and return to LA Eyeworks with six or seven outfits. Then, would the staff mind, "taking some pictures of her in each of the frames in each of the outfits?". That way, she could email the photos to friends who could help her make the right optical choice. The staff nodded their heads, "yes". I leaned over to the nice woman adjusting my frames and asked, "Is she for real?". The answer in conspiratorial sotto voce was, "It isn't the first time I've heard it". Meanwhile, I'm putting my glasses on and off with one hand so I can go back sooner. read more

I am happy with the way my eyeglasses look and the quality of the lenses seems fine, which is great because I paid a lot for them. The reason for the 2 stars is for their customer service. I bought my eyeglasses as part of their annual sale this year. At the sale, I was pretty much ignored when I was looking for my frames... there were a lot of people there, not a huge deal. When I went to pay for my frames, the man helping me just complained about how tired he was and how he couldn't wait until the sale was over because it's so crazy and exhausting and chaotic dealing with all the people in there... The conversation was so nonchalant that I started empathizing with him before I realized how odd -- and unprofessional -- it was for a customer service person to complain to the customer about how he couldn't wait for all the customers to get out of his store. When I picked up my eyeglasses, I asked for a hard case to keep them in. The woman who was helping me explained that they were out of the $2 hard cases they keep around during the sale, but I could spend $15 on one of their designer cases. As kindly as I could, I asked the woman why they don't just provide free eyeglasses cases. The woman got defensive and impatient and said -- in so many words -- that there's no room for them to keep $2 hard cases in stock, plus it'd be a bad business model for them to 'give away' free cases to their customers. Because I spent a considerable amount of money on a pair of eyeglasses and plan to treat them like an investment I'll have for several years, I don't think it's insane for LA Eyeworks to provide free cases to their customers... or at very least keep more of the $2 cases in stock. Coupled with the odd customer service, the fact that I was given an attitude when I asked about the cases makes me conclude that the people who work there don't value their customers... so I won't be going back or recommending them to friends. read more

LA Eyeworks is beyond as good as it gets. If it's originality in eyewear you're looking for, this is the only stop. The selection is unparalleled, style wise. It has become a tradition for me pick up a pair or two every year. I moved to the mid west for a short time and in desperate need of unique eyewear, I thought I was out of luck. I emailed the gang here if it's possible to send some I saw from their website. They were so gracious to do that for me. They sent the glasses to me with such care and love (the way they creatively packaged the glasses was a hoot, I loved it!). My credit card was charged of course to be credited later for pairs I didn't pick. They're no fool. Diana's customer service is phenomenal. I have never experience this caliber of service. Picking my eyewear from LA Eyeworks is one of the things I look forward to every year. read more

After looking around at many upmarket stores in the area I found a pair of sunglasses that I wanted to buy. But while I was shopping there with my friend I've never felt so leered at. It was impossible to try on a single pair or move around the store without constant observation. After selecting a pair to buy, the very unhelpful sales associate swiped my card and took payment as if it was chore. Just as I was about to leave the store, what one assumes to be the manager comes out and speaks to the associate and tells her (I'm two feet away) to check my ID (after the glasses are signed and paid for!). At this point I've purchased a pair of glasses that I regretfully couldn't get anywhere else, and I oblige, rather that question their ettiquette and security procedures, because I just want to leave this place. read more

My wife and I showed up to this LA Eyeworks store today because we wanted to look for some frames. Upon arrival, we were told that entering the store was by appointment only. We explained that we had just driven out all the way from Pasadena just to come to the store and the store clerk said that they might be able to squeeze us in before the next 2 PM appointment. So we waited a few minutes to see if they would be able to squeeze us in. While we were waiting, another gentleman shows up to the store without an appointment. The store clerk eventually comes back to the door and tells us that we would have to wait until 4 PM to get into the store. As we walked away from the store we noticed that the person who showed up after us without an appointment was allowed to go into the store. He is white and we are brown. Clearly, this was discrimination. We went back to the store to tell them what we saw and what we experienced. Upon telling the store clerk what we saw and what we experienced, she threw her arms up, rolled her eyes, and said something along the lines of the person was let in because they said that they would only be browsing for about 10 minutes. We gave them one star because zero was not an option. Needless to say we won't be returning to the store ever again. read more

I'm someone who sits on my glasses and needs to replace them often, so I can't really justify spending 300 bucks for just frames. Since discovering LA Eyeworks about 10 years ago, I haven't bought a frame from anywhere else. My recent sojourn this past week helping my husband find a new pair of specs continued to impress. This particular location (I believe one of two, the other on Beverly Blvd.) carries not only LA Eyeworks signature brand of glasses - which really are too cool to deny - but also a couple other lines that are on the top end of the happening scale. I had purchased a gift certificate for my husband over Christmas and they packaged it in a custom eyeglass holder of my choosing. When we arrived, the saleswoman was so patient, helpful and fun I think we spent more than an hour there trying on practically every frame in the joint. My husband who tends to be far more conservative than me ended up going for one of the wilder frames I've seen him try on in years... I was so impressed! The saleswoman (sorry for forgetting your name) was incredibly supportive without being salesy. The LA Eyeworks brand itself has collections named after parts of our very own city... like "Silverlake", "Echo Park", "Eagle Rock", etc. Every pair is a refreshing piece of face art, and even if you can't afford a pair, it's worth coming in sometime to try them on. They're truly one of a kind and people will take notice. read more

This place is amazing. I needed an earpiece on a set of old frames fixed, something that required tools I did not have. I took it in and they fixed them while I waited for no charge. A week later, I broke a pair of Armani shades I've had forever to the point other places told me I would just have to replace them. Took them by here, and they completely repaired my twisted frames for no charge again. I've never bought glasses from here, but I know if I ever need anything, I'm coming here. If you're heading to LA Eyeworks, if the experience I had was any indicator of their normal customer service, I'd say it's not really worth it unless you're doing their annual clearance sale. LA Eyeworks makes some pretty cool designs that are fashion forward and very unique, but beware of the design that you pick -- while the style may be timeless, the build quality may not live up to your expectations. Steer clear of their painted metal frames - nice looking, but they won't stay nice looking for very long. The handmade acetate framed models however are a steal. I scored a pair of beautiful gradient painted titanium frames here during their annual clearance sale. It was a splurge at $125 (down from ~$450) when most of the other frames were marked down to prices from $25-$75, but I figured they were a longterm investment to last me for a while. However, the paint job started to flake off impressively within just 3 months of daily wear, to a point 9 months and many scatterings of paint flakes later where the previously stylish looking frames were looking rather pathetic, half-painted affairs naked all the way from the outer halves through the ear pieces. I'm not a person who wears her glasses particularly hard or in rough conditions - this was the first time I've ever had this happen with a pair of glasses. Prior to this I've worn a similar pair of painted metal frames from Costco for 6 years without this level of spectacular paint shedding, and this is what I base my opinion about my experience on. I expect designer, branded frames to not only have a higher design standard, but to also be of higher quality and last longer than generic ones, so I was a bit astonished. This had to be a mistake or a defect, right? LA Eyeworks is supposed to make some really great, high quality frames, right? I called up the store to explain this situation and see what they could do to fix it, and their response was that I could simply buy another pair and that they'd do me a big favor of letting me buy the same style again for the $125 clearance price. Not pleased with that response of putting the responsibility right back on me as a customer - why on earth would I want another pair of the same frames that didn't work out in the first place? But I guess what else can the store staff really do when it's not their fault but the fault with their incredibly low quality manufacturing? I was more than a little surprised that the store seemed ok about letting their customers walk around advertising a pretty bad example of their product quality without taking a measure of responsibility about it, and wondered if this was their regular customer service, or an attitude that they reserve only for customers who purchase during their sale time. I don't know if this was a fluke and the rest of their metal items during the sale are ok, or if in general they offloaded lower quality items during the sale and that if I'd bought something at full price this would have happened (the paint flaking, and the staff telling me to just buy another pair.) I already had a second pair of frames from that same trip purchase, but these frames, also a painted metal design, even with me handling them as gingerly as possible in light of the first pair's demise, resulted in a disappointing repeat experience -- they started to chip and flake within 3 months. I can only conclude that in general, the paint job on the metal frames at LA Eyeworks are a total bust. The only salve in this experience and the reason why I didn't give them a 1-star was the third pair that I had bought in that same purchase. I had bought two pairs of metal frames and one pair of sunglasses with acetate frames. These sunglasses have lasted without incident for the three years that I've had them. I got designer glasses for a comparatively cheap price, but I feel like I didn't really get the high-end quality nor the high-end customer service that I expected would go with it. On the bright side, if I total what I spent all three, I guess it would equal the price of one non-sale pair of sunglasses. (But if I had known this was going to happen, I would have just skipped the sale and bought one pair of sunglasses, period!) read more
