We are now regulars of Kyo Sushi, and not least because of their careful considerations of COVID safety measures throughout the pandemic. But to the point: The sushi is wonderfully fresh and tasty. The dragon roll is also nicely spiced and delicious. We have tried the udon noodles, Yaki soba, and hibachi and all is good quality. An unusual but surprisingly good choice is the Chicken Katsu (or, as the Germans call it, schnitzel!). If you want your sushi fix and need to satisfy a finicky kiddo, go here and order the chicken katsu for your kid while you enjoy the sushi. read more

This is actually a solid 4.5 stars. It opened a few weeks ago right on 355 in Urbana in a new little center next to the old, torn down elementary school. You can do curbside parking out front, or go around back and there is a parking lot there. The restaurant is light and modern, with booths, tables and bar seating. It is a small restaurant, so if you have a large group (say bigger than 4 or 5), I'd call ahead on a busy day. When we went, Saturday around 4pm, it was not crowded. When we left, it was filling up. The food is all very fresh and beautifully presented. They have a large menu with many sushi choices, as well as teriyaki, soups, noodle dishes, fried rice, sushi boats, etc. It took me awhile to decide what to order, given the selection. We were a party of 5 and everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the miso and sushi deluxe dinner and thought it was delicious. I liked that the fish selected were all something I enjoy (I hate when you order a deluxe and get at least one fish with suction cups lol). The table had a variety of rolls, as well as fried rice and everyone enjoyed their selection. I didn't realize they weren't on yelp yet, so next time I'm there I'll add photos of the outside and seating, etc. While sushi is usually expensive, I felt like their prices were reasonable for what you got. I rated this place 5 stars about 8 months ago I was a very frequent customer because I live here in Urbana, (I even recommend it to a lot of people who started going here and brought them business) then I stopped coming because the shrimp was undercooked one time & I decided it give it a break. Few months later I call to place an order on my way home and the younger lady who is usually working in the front has a nasty attitude with me and says I need to pay upfront for a 6$ California roll because a friend of mine who I came with before ordered something and didn't show up (I honestly haven't even spoke to that girl in a few months) so I explained to her that we are 2 different people and I don't have anything to do with her and I live about 2 minutes away from there and I'm almost home driving but she needs me to read my card number to her first or they will make it when I get there after I pay. I'm already in a rush so I decide to pull out my card and read her the card numbers while driving! Cause I'd rather not wait. The whole encounter kind of ruined my appetite so I picked it up and ended up getting something else instead I do not recommend this place if you want a pleasant customer service experience. Due to the limited number of places to eat in Urbana this is one of the better choices for their kind. The location is great, plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is cute....a little small but they are managing the traffic pretty well. When they first opened, the food was always fresh, etc. Now things are not the same. I'd say I've ordered takeout twice and I've had hair in my food. The food taste very different. My brown rice was very mushy once. Not too impressed. My sushi just seemed like they just rolled something together. It's a little disappointing! I'll be taking a break from this place for awhile. Don't let a good place lose its touch! But I sure am glad I stopped by after my offsprings tennis match at UHS. I loved the miso soup. Truly truly fell in love with the melt in your mouth shrimp shumai. The best was the Hawaiian rolls. Excellent! We had no idea a sushi place was coming to Urbana so I can't even describe how happy we were that they decided to move in just around the corner from our office. It's a 1000 times better that it's so freaking delicious, too. The staff is super nice, the restaurant is cute and the food is legit. So far we've had a bento box, sushi rolls, both dumplings on menu, haru maki and the dragon balls. All awesome. Can't wait to try more. read more

For a sushi joint in Frederick it's the best one I've been to. Had summer rolls, chirashi (no white tuna), green tea, miso soup and salad. Everything was excellent. The salad drressing was delicious and different enough from most sushi places to be refreshing. The miso was on point. Green tea was on point. Loved their different take on a summer roll. Really unique and very good! The chirashi was excellent with an interesting and nice selection of cold fresh fish. Restaurant and restrooms were clEan and smelled nice. Great spot! read more

Small but great addition to Urbana! Went with some girlfriends and we all got the same thing, the spicy maki combo. It was the best value and delicious, it was three spicy rolls with miso soup or a salad. The lunch deals looked like really good deals if you are in the area and looking for a quick lunch. The service was great and lots of people were coming in to pick up their online togo orders, very popular for a Tuesday night. The new commons area over there is so cute, tiny but cute! I ordered 3 rolls for lunch takeout, and the quality is pretty good for what urbana has to offer. The place looks small but kinda cozy and where the chefs make sushi is nice and open. Their miso soup is soso and sushi pieces are a little small. Idk how much they season their rice either. But at least they dont roll them with a thick amount of rice to compensate. They were also made very quickly; i ordered online, drove 5 minutes and they were ready for me. They could also make the spicy pieces spicier, but im not rly surprised due to the neighborhood haha The best thing though was that the raw fish tasted fresh. No fishy taste at all, which is what i look for. Salmon in the salmon avocado roll was wonderfully fatty. i also love eel and theirs didnt have any of the little bones in the pieces i had . Something small I also enjoyed was that for takeout, they put the soy sauce in a little cup with a lid instead of throwing in soy sauce packets. We wanted to get to here before covid but alas this didnt happen. This our new local spot since moving out of Baltimore for sushi. They are well priced and have rolls and charashi sushi that we typically get from the other places we use to frequent. The boy likes his charashi and a spicy tuna or salmon roll and i'm a fan of age tofu. Since age tofu is deep friend silken tofu this doesnt translate into take out all that well.. they will do it but the tofu isnt crisp like you would expect if it came piping hot out of the fryer onto a plate. The one thing that Sushi Sono (in columbia) and Sushi Hana (Towson/Baltimore) have is that they put bonito flakes ontop of the tofu just to add a little bit of smokiness which I like. The Charashi has come pretty good each time we've gotten it. The seasoned rice is seasoned nicely though I think I like Sushi Sono's the best. The raw fish is pretty good though Kyo seems to like to put mackerel on their charashi, normal yes but not my favorite as its really fishy. The boy however gobbles these down so I have to assume that its good. They have been pretty solid since Covid. The staff is behind a plexiglass wall and there is no going "into" the restaurant. You basically order either from home (phone, internet) or in person (through the plexiglass) and they tell you how long it will take and they stick a small clipboard out for you to sign. The staff behind the plexiglass are all wearing masks and each pen is wiped down after you are done with it. read more

My husband and I stopped by here last week to try it out. We didn't realize it's carry-out only but because the reviews were so positive we figured we'd go ahead and order a few things. The cashier helped us choose a couple rolls that would be safe for me to eat since I'm pregnant and everything we ordered was SO good! Even a basic shrimp tempura roll was way better than I expected. Ran across this place while out on a drive and thought we'd take a chance. Easy parking. The place felt a tad sterile (maybe because of the mostly gray interior, which seems to be everywhere these days), and the lighting wasn't particularly warm. The smell of air freshener was a little overwhelming when you first walk in. The food, fortunately, was quite good. The wrappers on the pan-fried gyoza were tender but nicely crisped, the filing well seasoned. The sauce for the gyoza (soy sauce based?) was salty and sweet, slightly sticky. Edamame was hot and lightly salted. We shared the poke bowl #2 -- salmon, tuna, snapper(?) and vegetables with jalepeno interspersed throughout. The fish was extremely fresh and the sauce pulled it all together well. Also ordered a sushi roll with tempura shrimp, lobster, and avocado. It was a bit bland but the fish was fresh and the rolls were substantial. All in all, a good find. Glad we stopped in! I would come back for the poke bowl and would try some other rolls. read more
