I know that this review might not seem very fair because I am not talking about the food or anything about the restaurant directly. But why show up for the food if you can't even get a table!! But I was extremely disappointed with their reservation system. I had put in a request for a reservation more than 24 hrs before the intended time and while yes I never received a "confirmation" and on the email it does say "this is not a confirmation", however, I have never had such a poor reservation system experience with any other restaurant. I had shown up in to the restaurant in the bitter cold and paid for parking only to find that they never confirmed the reservation on their end. SMH. And was an hour wait....EXACTLY why I wanted to make a reservation to avoid all of this. Moral of the story, don't trust their reservation system, if you want a table. read more

Had an experience today that was off-putting to say the least. Tsunami is where my Favorite Youngest Midwestern Granddaughter always wants to go when she's in town, and we always bring at least 6-8 people. Today's food was great (as usual) and service was very good - until the check came. Food cost was $121 (not bad for 6 of us), so I pulled out my credit card to pay. When the server returned, the amount on the charge slip was $146 plus checkboxes for suggested additional tips from 15-25%; the detailed check was not included. I asked for the detail and found that they had added a "Gratuity (20%)" charge to the food cost, bring my total charge with tax to $146. If I had not looked at the detail, I would have double-tipped, but because I had already included 20% I checked the "0%" box and added a note that I had already paid the gratuity in the $146 total shown on the detailed check. A few moments later our server rushed over to ask why I did not include a tip. I explained that I did, and showed her the detailed check. She looked like she understood my reasoning but was clearly hoping for more. I've never experienced anything like this. I did not make a scene involving the manager in front of my fam, but I was more than tempted. I'm all about making sure that servers are well compensated for their hard work, but this seemed more like a scheme to increase revenue to the restaurant. (And no, the menu did not say anything like "Parties of six or more will automatically be hit with a 20% service fee.") I plan to follow up with a manager once the grandkiddies return to the Midwest. Tsunami has been my go to for ramen for years. It's consistently excellent ramen. The vegan shoyu is the best. Hands down, whenever we're in Frederick, this is my choice. My vegetarian kiddo recently ordered the veggie bento box and was delightfully blown away by it. Her favorite dish was the tofu with peanut sauce. She said the peanut sauce had spice but wasn't too spicy (she's 12). The ginger dressing for the salad was really good, too. The spring rolls weren't a favorite, but they're a nice textural contrast. So, even if you're not in the mood for ramen, you should still stop by. Service has never been disappointing. Our most recent visit was fantastic, as always. Went for dinner and the restaurant lighting was very dim that I had trouble seeing. All the pictures I took were super dark you can barely see anything so I had to enhance the lighting. Had a girls night last night and made a reservation for four. My friend is a Frederick local and raves about this place. Frederick was having an event last night so there was more traffic than usual, causing us to be late to our reservation. The staff was very understanding of our delay and worked with us. We were seated shortly after arriving. We ordered drinks and appetizers both of which took awhile to be served. But as I said downtown Frederick was SLAMMED. A Really solid 4.5 stars for Tsunami Ramen. My wife surprised me with a dinner here for the "dinner out for your birthday" part of my birthday weekend up in Frederick and it was a lovely mean. Very cozy, ocean themed vibes and after perusing the very extensive menu of Ramen, appetizers and Rice Bowls, and ordering our cocktails, we got the Chicken Karrage Rice bowl, the spicy special ramen listed on the specials (We were here on 12/28/24, not sure how long they keep the specials on there) as well as dumplings and Korean pancakes to start. Drink: Good cocktails Service: Super prompt. Literally both times one of us got up to go to the bathroom one of our courses came. It felt a smidge too fast, but that's a nitpick Food: Flavors were great. The Korean pancakes were a little too temperature hot when we got then but were excellent once we let them cool. The dumplings were great and my wife loved her ramen in all facets, including the broth. Note on this "spicy special ramen": it's a mild spice, so if you're heat sensitive you're fine. This was my second time dining at Tsunami. I have mixed feelings about my experience. The waiter was very friendly, enthusiastic, and gave great input when it came to our selections. The special cocktail, the Tsunami Cooler, was so delicious, I ended up getting a second one! My table got the soup dumplings as an appetizer, and they were absolutely phenomenal. They had an excellent combination of flavors that absolutely hit the spot. For my entree, I ordered the Vegetarian Bento Box, with the "crispy" tofu. The tofu wasn't very crispy at all, and the texture was awful, in my opinion. The tofu had an external, somewhat firm outer layer, and then the inside was soft and almost custard-like in a way, and I don't think I've ever had fried/crispy tofu like this. The sauce and vegetables on top of the tofu were delicious, but I couldn't get past the texture of the tofu enough to eat more than two cubes. Another party at my table tried one of my tofu pieces, and they were put-off by the texture as well. The rest of the bento box was delicious- the rice was well-cooked, the salad had a delicious ginger dressing, the kimchi was well made, and the spring rolls were crispy and flavorful. Really nice place. We were looking for a lunch place during the Frederick Art Fair, an annual thing we do with friends. Tsunami is one of the very few places that took reservations. Only 2-3 blocks from the main area. The food is very good. We got a bunch of Bento Boxes. It was all amazing. The waitstaff was attentive and popped by regularly to be sure all was well. Craving ramen, Yelp directed me to Tsunami close to our Airbnb in downtown Frederick. Top-rated, I went in hopeful. Walking in around noon for lunch on an April Friday, I got a seat at the bar easily. Staff were friendly, attentive, and my food came out quickly (as did the check). Great service! Enjoying ramen around the world in my travels, I was disappointed in my ramen. The red curry ramen comes with pork, but the egg wasn't properly cooked for ramen. (The yolk was overcooked and hard.) The flavors also didn't pop. Everything was muted. The wontons on top add a little crunch, but eat it right away before they get soggy. The milk tea boba came with some syrup inside that took away from the milk tea flavor. It was way too sweet. (I have sweet tooth so if I found it too sweet, it's really too sweet.) It's possible I ordered wrong so I'd love to give it a second chance when I return to Frederick. Service 2 stars-They quoted me 20 mins, but didn't get called until an hour later. If I didn't go back and check, we wouldn't have eaten until after 8pm. We ordered couple of their special: tuna nacho and Penang curry chicken Ramen. And one of theirs regular dish Tonkotsu reman. The tuna nacho tasted great with lots of toppings. The restaurant had lost our reservation, but put us at the head of the reservations queue and we were seated within a very few minutes. Although the restaurant was full, the noise level was very tolerable and it was easy to hear each other. Service was super-efficient but pleasant. We thought all the dishes we ordered were very good indeed: veggie spring rolls, pollo taco, salmon bento, Sriracha udon. Fun, modern Ramen place! I came to Tsunami last night with family for the first time and was impressed at the modern feel. I always like to take advantage when I see lychee on menus since it isn't super common (outside of Asian restaurants). Food wise, we ordered spring rolls, Korean shrimp pancakes, and I ordered the red curry karaage ramen that was a special for the night. All the food was delicious and the curry broth was so rich! Our waitress was super nice and patient when we took a little bit to order because we were indecisive. I took off a star because I felt like we were rushed out at the end. We were finished with food but had ordered another round of drinks when a different waitress came by to clear our plates (which is fine) and said she was bringing our check when we had just received our drinks. This place was awesome. From the poached eggs to the Thai iced tea, this place just hit the right notes. Friendly staff was super accommodating a table with four kids and four adults. The bill was split with no issue. Food came really fast. And the bill at the end was very fair. I got the spicy ramen and it was just right. Not quite at the "make you sweat" level of heat, but enough to take the edge off a cold day. I paired it with a Thai iced tea, that was super smooth and not cloyingly sweet. Located in the downtown area of Frederick where there are plenty of options for food and shopping - parking could be a problem. Try side streets and be prepared to parallel park. For us, only had to make one trip around the block. Nice location, decent amount of seating given the building size - small bar and various seating choices. Upon looking at the menu we ordered the dumplings and the bang bang shrimp for an appetizer. For an entree I took Vog's advice and got the red curry ramen which sounded good enough but the question was how spicy it would be. Within 4 minutes our entree came out - which at first I didn't think was ours bc we hadn't gotten our appetizer, it was so fast I hadn't even taken a sip of my drink. But it was ours. I really liked the curry ramen - it wasn't spicy at all and the taste was incredibly good. I wasn't too impressed by the amount of noodles in it though and I only got two slices of pork. Having gone to other ramen places I felt like they loaded you up - here was more chic I guess. Finally our waiter came back and we mentioned the apps which he inputted incorrectly on the computer so there was the mixup. They came out shortly after. The dumplings I thought were a little bland but the shrimp was good. Would have liked to have more of the sauce on the shrimp. Some of them weren't tossed in it as advertised. My husband and I finally were able to try Tsunami tonight and we just loved the food and the vibe of the restaurant. It's a great dining experience in Downtown Frederick, and we didnt even have to wait to be seated. The restaurant is quite spacious and covered with string of lights, and authentic Japanese decor. There is very limited street parking but the closest parking garage seems to be on Church Street. There also is a full bar with a variety of Japanese beers, whiskeys, and Sake. First we ordered the spicy tuna for appetizer and they were crunchy and flavorful. The food came out and was served expeditiously, which was a plus. Then we ordered the scallops with lobster cream sauce and shiitake mushrooms, and it was excellent. The scallops were not tough but melted in your mouth with every bite. After I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen which is a savory broth served with tender chashu pork, and I loved the flavors and would highly recommend this dish. My husband ordered the spicy miso broth ramen and it was very savory and flavorful, but not too spicy. We definitely had a nice and enjoyable dining experience, so if you're feeling in the mood for a light fare and not too heavy meal, Tsunami may be the dining experience you're looking for. read more
