Was in and out in less than 45 min on a busy Friday. Got my oil changed and a new air filter. I drive a Lexus so a lot of places are quick to rip me off but not these guys! $45 for my oil (I take more than 5 quarts) and they replaced my air filter for $30. I've lived near this location for 3 years, so it's always been convenient for me to come here whenever I needed an oil change, inspection, or routine maintenance. But due to their reliability, friendly employees, and reasonable prices I can safely say I would drive quite a ways to have my car taken care of here. I am about to leave the country for military duty and I am taking my car along with me. I wanted to make sure it was good to go, so I brought it in for a diagnostic test to see if there was anything that needed taking care of, and an oil change. Spencer greeted me and took care of me right away. I was able to leave my car there for a short time and was promptly called when it was ready to pick up. Sometimes you go to a car place and the mechanics will just talk circles around you, telling you need this and that and stuff you've never even heard of. Spencer, on the other hand, was friendly, informative and direct about what they were doing to the car. He made some recommendations and wasn't pushy about anything. This is the same experience I've had with every visit to Kwik Kar on William Cannon Dr. I ended up getting a full service oil change, my radiator serviced, a power steering flush, fuel system cleaning, and my tires rotated, all for much less than I expected. Well I wrote my first review prematurely. Gave the new location off 290 west a bad review before I left. I want to set the record straight. I got right in and wanted my oil changed and my tires rotated. An hour and a half later still sitting there I was mad. Turns out the brand new lift broke and my car was stuck on it. They offered to drive me home and didn't make me pay for the rotation. Soon after learning about the cause of the delay they got the lift fixed and I was on my way. They turned a negative into a positive. I am in sales and get the value of what they were trying to do. I will go back and give them another shot. I took my car in today for an oil change, tire rotation, and break check. I was told that they wouldn't charge for the break check but was. They also told me that I needed to get all my break pads replaced and that the rear two had less than 10% left and the front two were wearing unevenly and that it would be $1100 to replace and repair. I told them not to do anything and I took it for a second opinion. At the second place I took it to the guys told me that I had over 50% left on all four of my break pads and that they were not wearing unevenly (they even took me in to show me so I knew for sure). I called back because I was frustrated and they refunded for the break check that I shouldn't have been charged for and they were very apologetic. I do appreciate the customer service and making amends, but it's frustrating to be so mislead about what is wrong with my car. A lot of places will try to up charge or mislead you if you look like an easy way to make some extra money and that is how I felt today. read more

I am writing this review based on my son's experience today so this is not 1st hand. My son is from Dallas and has been going to school in Austin for the last 3 years. This year he needed to get is vehicle inspected with emissions. Not easy to find in Austin evidentially. So he calls me and tell him to go to a Kwik Kar as we do business with a Kwik Kar owner here in Dallas and have for years. He called this location and asked if they were busy and when would be a good time. Now they said, come on in. He jumps in the car and is there in 5 minutes. He went to the office but no one was there so he went out to the bay to find someone. A slender young guy asked him why he was in the bay and he explained. The employee then says it will be a 1.5 hour wait. My son said that he had just called and was told differently. Now employee has an attitude and states that my son should have called first. My son says well I did call and was told to come on in. At this point and a few words exchanged my son left and calls me. I send him somewhere else and he gets excellent service and has now put this info on his college's blog for others to see. I can say that our Owner and Manager of a KwiK Kar in Dallas would never have allowed this. read more

They crew at Kwik Kar is the absolute best. They are great at communicating any recommendations and costs. They did everything in their power to help minimize the amount of repair (and therefore cost) needed by testing, cleaning, reattaching each part to make sure it needed replacement. Not to mention it is customary for them to vacuum and clean the windows of a car after any repairs. I have never trusted mechanics quite like these folks and recommend them wholeheartedly! read more

I stopped by Kwik Kar Southwest in order to have the oil changed for the first time in my vehicle. I was unsure of where to go to get the oil changed in Southwest Austin, but the business had good reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give it a try. From the moment I arrived, I felt man-handled by the workers. They were unwilling to listen to my questions or concerns and took matters into their own hands. I felt like they were trying to give me an unfair price for the oil change at $70 or $90, plus tax and a "special" filter. They said I needed synthetic oil in my vehicle, when this is clearly untrue. Luckily, I was able to call a friend who advised me that I could use regular-grade oil and be just fine. Thankfully I stopped the worker before he put the synthetic oil in my car. I was charged $39.99 for a standard oil change, plus the "special" filter cost of $3.00, plus $5.60 for an extra quart of oil for my vehicle. Once tax was added, the total came to $52.20. I called and spoke with Chris shortly after I left the business because the receipt I received was confusing. I did not understand why the cost was so high. He was unable to explain the itemized charges to me. I had never spent this much on an oil change! I could have gone elsewhere and had the same service done for a cheaper price and been respected by the staff. In sum, I want it to be known that just because I am a female, I am not ignorant, and will not be cheated because of my sex. I am very disappointed in this business and will not return. read more

this was actually my second first to this Kwik Kar, and I couldn't remember why I hadn't gone for my last 3 oil changes. It is very close to me and I remembered them being very friendly, but for some reason I had gone elsewhere recently. Well I decided if I couldn't remember it couldn't be that important. Sadly one of the mechanics reminded me why, even if he didn't mean too. When asked what kind of oil I wanted, I said whatever it says on the last sticker. He said he knew that, but he wondered if I normally get synthetic as it was what I got last time. Now I remember, last time when I told the guy to put what the last sticker said in it, he gave me expensive synthetic oil without mentioning to me he was giving me more expensive oil. The sticker by the way said something like 5w40 I believe, it mentioned nothing about being synthetic, as it shouldn't because it was conventional. It was the most expensive oil change I have every had. Twice as expensive as what I paid recently in another city. This trip I also had a minor problem that upsets me. I was told the wait would be 20 mins. Ok I can deal with that. Before we go to far however, lets talk about the fact that your sign says very big "10 MIN OIL CHANGE." It is misleading at the least, most likely a lie. Take it down and I will move the rating up a star. I was there for an hour and 10 minutes. Even when I actually saw my car in the shop with the hood up, it was in the for at least 20 mins. Either way I'm not sure what the 10 min claim is trying to say, but it is wrong. Despite all of this, they are very very friendly. It is also a clean and nice looking place. And hey, lots of recent magazine! Still a tad bit expnsive, and not 10 mins. There are alot of places around that can get you in and out quicker. They may not be as friendly, but if price and speed are your thing they can do just as good if not better somewhere else. read more

This is the first time I've had auto work done where it was not only positive, but enjoyable! The employees here are so friendly and the waiting room is cozy. I dropped my car off for an inspection, and they called to let me know that my brake light was out so they didn't bother charging me for the first inspection attempt. Instead, they ran a diagnostic and found that the switch was broken. I had a new part, a working brake light, and a successfully inspected car all within one afternoon. I will absolutely come back next time I need work done, and maybe check out their dog park while I wait! read more

This place was pretty incredible. I showed up half an hour before they closed, and they still squeezed in an oil change and car inspection for me! Fantastic since my sticker was two days expired already! :) The man I thought was the manager met me out at my car before I had a chance to get out my insurance and walk inside. The customer service is great. Inside, the waiting room actually has nice furniture. No skeezy cracked vinyl with sticky spots. Pots of coffee and a magazine that I actually found interesting for a change. Don't take your car here! I started out with a check engine light. 3 diagnostic tests later and various $80 repairs... I still had a check engine light. Soon enough other things started going wrong on with my car. It seemed that every time i took it in there was something different, and more expensive. Eventually I had a noise that was unmistakable and my car shook. I took it in... they said they repaired the problem for $200.00. As soon as I drove it off the lot the car shook and the same noise was still there. I took it back immediately and they looked at it again. This time it was something different and the repair was going to be $400.00. I took it to another shop that told me the check engine repair was from a bad oil change (which was done at Kwik Car). And that the car shaking was from a tire that was loosened, and the noise was from a damaged shock.... I drove a 2001 toyota corolla and should not have been putting 600.00 a month in repairs into it. Soon after I had to replace the car since it became unrepairable. I will never trust them again with car repairs. read more

I have been going here for basic oil changes and inspections for several years now and the service is always top notch. The staff is super friendly, service is quick, and I never feel pressured or like someone is explaining something to me that I don't understand. Their facilities have wifi, coffee, snacks, and are always well kept. Recently, I had a problem with my car and they really went above and beyond. The owners actually gave me a ride home so my car could stay and be worked on, as well as picked me up the next day. The pricing seemed fair for what was done and I understood everything they were talking about b/c of how they explained things to me. No one wants to have car trouble, but if you do, this is definitely the place to go b/c they really care about the customer and make it a great experience. Thank you Kwik Kar! read more

Per my experience, this Kwik Kar location trains its staff to give the low-ball pitch and then when the bill comes, WHAMMO, it's more than was stated. My example: when I asked how much an oil change is, I was told one price. Then, while waiting, OF COURSE here come the kid to show me (read: upsell) the air filter. Right, got it, it's my filter. And it had a long way to go before changing. But, kind young man, your sincerity and focused attempt to rip me off earned you an A+ for effort. Note to management - never assume that EVERYONE who uses your service knows nothing about cars, o.k.? Your "mark" looks like an innocent mom with her kids, or the elderly couple to my left. Not the carpenter/contractor who rolls in with a work truck and is wearing his trade on his shoes and hands. Probably not the guy you want to try your tricks with. So, here comes the bill - and WHOP, right upside the head, there it is, in black and white.......of course, it's for way more than the greeter in the lot said. Why, you may ask? Because he neglected to tell me (and I'm betting everyone else) that a standard oil change only comes with 5 quarts. My truck needs six. The extra quart - if memory serves me - was somewhere in the order of $13.....more than 30% of the ENTIRE cost of the service. Oh, and the disposal fees, etc. When I questioned the cashier about the 5 quart thingy, I was told it's their policy. Exactly how many cars out there need 5 quarts of oil? Can't you just give me one of the leftover quarts from the last 4 quart change you did? And do you tell all those 4 cylinder folk they have a one quart credit? Ah, only in America. How about this: had the greeter kid simply TOLD me the 5 quart limit at the stated price, or, better yet, asked me how many quarts my truck requires (Can't assume he would know anything along THOSE lines of customer engagement) and then give me the price, I probably would have still had the oil done there. It's the sneaky, b.s. like this that leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. And how about just telling people right off the bat that with fees and tax, the total price will be X? To be fair, the manager removed the extra fee for the 6th quart, but his eagerness to do so quickly only proved to me this: how many people catch this trick? If he falls on the sword even 10% of the time, he still "getting" the other 90%. And how many changes a day? Multiplied by the extra quart fee (let's not even think about how many filters, too) and you got yourself a classic clip-joint. NEVER AGAIN, and, I've told this story to just about everybody I know. read more

Several times they've done work and charged me for it that I didn't authorize. Every time I would get an oil change they'd charge me something different. They pride themselves in being the local Austin family alternative to chain oil change places and don't back it up with service or price. My dad is one of those guys who can fix anything, and who understands cars naturally. Sadly, this gift skipped a generation. Thus, I am forced to turn to professionals to help keep my car running. This fills me with a certain degree of shame. However, this garage is the next best thing to being able to do it by myself. Prices are excellent. Service is friendly. Based on what little I know (and confirming phone calls with my dad) they know what they're doing. I've certainly never had problems with any work they have done. The waiting room is lovely: tons of reading, free tea and coffee, nice music, and comfortable chairs. Sometimes it can be a long wait to get something done, but I'd rather get it done fair, and get it done right, then get it done quickly. On one wait, I got to listen to the mechanics talk to a number of people about their cars. And (again, take this with a grain of salt, given my limited car knowledge) time after time, the mechanics provided a ton of options to each customer. They never upsold, and they gave a fair and reasonable estimate of what really needed to be done, what could wait, and what could be handled at home, for less money. I listened to a mechanic actually tell a customer that the difference between two options was that "the second one is more expensive, so.. if someone asks, you can tell them it's nicer, I guess? I certainly wouldn't go that way." I've never walked out of this place feeling like I didn't know what happened to my car or that I spent more than I'd had to. And my car runs better than it did before they worked on it. I don't know what else I could ask for from a garage. read more

had to bring my hub's car in for its annual state inspection. typically go to the dealership but they always have a minimum 2 hour wait. tried this place for the first time due to the positive - yet cautionary - yelp reviews so i walked in expecting to pass but not before being approached with some sort of upsell or being told "mam, your taillight is out and needs to be replaced in order to pass". the lady right before me in the inspection queue had that unfortunate experience. apparently she was aware that one of the lights around the plates were broken so she wasn't surprised when she was told that it needed to be replaced, however, when she checked out, they charged her for two lights. she was eventually told that once they'd replaced the broken one the other one went out. she laughed out loud as in "yeah, ok, sure - bullshit," but paid anyway. i felt bad or her and if it were me, would've left only paying for one as that was all i'd authorized. after she had left, i sat in the waiting area the whole time prepared to fire back "Pass or fail, I will only pay for the inspection," but minutes later i drove off without incident. the waiting area is relatively nice for what it is and i didn't feel like whipping out the sanitary wipes after touching anything! the rear patio was good too when no one's polluting the air with cigarettes nearby. i'd definitely go back but not if these 'positive yet cautionary' reviews escalate. read more

Definitely the best car shop I've ever gone to. I was kind of hesitant of going anywhere else besides my dealership after Wal Mart did a number on my Subaru with a simple oil change, but I decided to give these guys a try. I told them my situation and they guy told me not to worry, he actually had a Subaru himself. So now I've been there numerous times, and have taken some friends there too, and they always seem to know what they are doing. I was never supposed to be a helpless girl stranded on the side of the highway waiting for a guy to come rescue me, but after a bad auto mechanic's experience a couple of years ago where I felt trapped into paying an obviously exaggerated bill ($120+) for an extremely simple service (putting gas in my truck- my gas gauge was broken and I had miscalculated the mileage until the next fill-up), I have been terrified of all things related to fixing and maintaining my truck. This is why I turned to Yelp and discovered the fantastic reviews for Kwik Kar. To put it simply, I was helped by about 4-5 different mechanics from the moment I parked in the parking space until the moment I drove away, and felt they went out of their way to make certain I was both comfortable and fully informed of everything they were doing. A mechanic met me at my car door after I drove in to see how he could assist me and led me into the office while another mechanic arrived and drove my truck into the shop. Since it had been about three times the recommended amount of time for changing my oil, I decided to do that as well as update my two year old inspection (I wasn't kidding about avoiding mechanics). Throughout the 30-45 minute waiting time, at least two different mechanics sat down beside me in the extremely comfortable waiting room (think hairdressing salon) to patiently go over things my car was required to have (new windshield wipers) to possible recommendations (based on mileage from last service not a gloom and doom story). In the end, they went over every charge on my bill without being asked and conveniently parked my car outside the side exit door facing the road for me. Although I can't promise perfection on my part, I can promise that my truck has a fighting chance now that Kwik Kar is in my life. Thank you Yelpers for all the great advice! read more

I've been around internal combustion machines my whole life. Never have I been impressed with an auto shop with the exception of professional race shops. Kwik Kar Southwest is set up like a winning, successful, and professional race shop for the every day driver. I moved to Austin three months ago, and left all my automotive contacts in my hometown. So, now I have to find a good general mechanic. I've driven around and interviewed, for three weeks, different mechanics in S. Austin. Unimpressed, until today when I took my truck for inspection. This is a legitimate operation. I am often cynical, so for me to come home, and actually write a review for an auto shop, must mean it's as good as it gets. read more

I really want to like them. They people are very nice here. But... several things. The wait time. It's long. They tell you 30 minutes, try and hour and 30 minutes before they start work. The cost. It's higher than other places, significantly so. They do good work, but they aren't cheap. The service. I feel like it used to be better. Started going there 3 years ago, recently switched away because the little things kept piling up. Used to be if your check engine light came on, they'd plug the machine in for free. Now, "That'll be $79." Oh and the rebates they offer to offset the service... I filled every one of them out and NEVER got any refund checks. 2+ years of those rebates and never saw a dime. read more

While the employees are friendly and the service seems quality buyer beware of their practice of selling services not needed especially to women. My wife has been in several times despite my objection only to leave there having had to endure countless efforts to sell this service or this filter when it's well known it doesn't need replacing. Plenty of options that don't seem to have this hidden agenda. read more

Came in here for an inspection after a terrible experience at the jiffy lube on Brodie, and was greeted as soon as I walked up by who seemed to be one of the owners. Everyone was smiling and super friendly. I waited inside the lobby for no more than 15-20 minutes even though they were really busy. The lobby was small, but very well taken care of. I walked away happy I spent my money with these awesome people. Oh and if you have a dog with you, no worries! They have a small dog park along the side of the building. I went to get my car inspected today. When I pulled in, my air conditioner was working. When I drove out it wasn't. At first they weren't going to do anything, but after I explained my situation, an assistant manager, said they would take a look at it. An hour later, he told me my freon was low, but not enough to make any difference. They didn't check fuses and they didn't check to see if power was getting to the compressor. I kept hearing, "It's nothing that we did, or we'd take care of it." It's my word against theirs, and I lost. I'm not sure what happened, but I truly feel like the machine they hooked up to my car to do the inspection did something that made my a/c stop working. It's over 100 degrees in Texas and I'm without an a/c. I won't be back. read more

We've been coming here for about 2 years and love it! Never had a bad experience. The workers are nice, and have always given us the details straight up. They have little chocolates and coffee and tea in the waiting room too, plus wifi. But that's just the cherry on the sundae, since the main goal is to get your car serviced properly, in a timely manner. So I say we'll be loyal fans for years to come. read more

I can't recommend these guys enough. I always come here for routine oil changes and such and they are so good about noticing any and all potential issues. They never pressure you into anything and are very honest about what to prioritize. They definitely care about the longevity of your vehicle and the safety of their customers. My 10 year old car needed an oil change and brake fluid flushed. In the process Jesus noticed my brakes were basically non existent, he showed me the exact problem and it was undeniable. I wasn't going to be able to afford the cost, but they were concerned about me continuing to drive my car with the brakes in such dangerous conditions. Charlie was very helpful and negotiated something that I could afford. Now everything is working beautifully and I feel much safer. These guys are so wonderful and honest and are not trying to wipe your bank account. I am so grateful to these guys and will continue to come back for every car need I have. read more

Read all these great reviews on YELP so we decided to give it a try. We pulled into the parking lot and there was no clear indication as to the flow of vehicles through their small lot. We jockeyed the truck around and decided we were on the wrong side and went to the other side of the building. I noticed that vehicles in the bays were going both ways. Anyways, we sat there waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence and give further direction but all we got was employees standing around talking to each other and no-one seemed to be in a hurry to do much of anything. After 5 minutes, we decided that they didn't need our dollars and we went to Jiffylube where we got great service. I won't make that mistake again... read more
