Gave them another try. Ordered the small bowl of pork sinigang with a side order of rice. The soup was flavorful with tender pieces of pork but was lukewarm and had solidified pieces of grease floating in it. The least they could have done is nuked it til hot. Rice was dry and had some crunchy pieces. I did enjoy the flavor but not sure if I will be going back as this is the 2nd time that I have been disappointed. Maybe the 3rd time is the charm. Young man at the register was very pleasant but had to ask for utensils. Overpriced for portions received $13 for small soup and rice. read more

Kusina - Nasty Kusina restaurant in modesto trash. - Filipino Near Me - Modesto, California

A must-try, especially if Filipino food is new to you. Combo plates come with a variety of mains, including milkfish, carne asada, and BBQ pork skewers. The combo plate is a nice lunch-sized portion, where your main is accompanied by pancit bihon (delicious noodles), rice, and lumpia (also delicious). The milkfish is prepared with a kind of spice rub. On my first visit, it was perfect and moist; on my second, it was close to fish jerky but still enjoyable to eat. Second visit definitely seemed to have an understaffed kitchen (that's 2022 for you). If you're feeling fretful, get takeout so you get it all at once and can go home. read more

Ordered small size tinola because they don't have nilaga. Saw something on the soup not sure what it is or it's part of the spices. The lumpia was so small . Terrible. read more

We went here to order some food so we can try them. We ordered a family size Pancit and other things. They charged us $25 for the family size Pancit and when I opened up I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED! The portion was so small it can only feed 1 person not a family. Needless to say we're NEVER coming back. I'd rather drive to Stockton for better portion and better pricing. read more

Been wanting to try this place for awhile. Surprisingly, my first time having lumpia and Filipino food. I ordered lumpia, the pork belly combo and fried tilapia. The best item was the lumpia but they are small. (Have never had lumpia before this so I have nothing to compare it to, but seems super small). The rest of the food was just ok, slightly lacking flavor. The portions were also quite small but the service was good and the cashier was kind. read more

The first time trying, it was delicious. I had a 5 star review but after returning up to 6 more times, the food has definitely decreased in quality. The lumpia shouldn't be classified as 'best in Modesto' because it tastes/constructed as an egg roll. Kare kare was lacking flavor. Adobo was dry 3x in a row and I don't even remember what else has diminished but I do love their vinegar dipping sauce. I'm sorry but I had to update my review. I haven't been in months because of being disappointed visit after visit and my husband(Filipino) and I were going almost every Friday. read more

Food was absolutely delicious! Service was excellent! Very pleasant, bright, open atmosphere and many Philippine imported merchandise to purchase in a cute corner of the restaurant. If you want a taste of home cooking of Filipino dishes, please give Kusina a try! read more

Being Filipino I was thrilled to have a homeland restaurant. It's been open for a bit so I thought I'd give it a try. I know new places need to get their grounding. The actual restaurant is cute and clean. It was about 3pm. We went because their special was lechon which I love. First of all the counter person didn't know if they had any lechon. We're patient. He checked. Yes! They did. Ordered the appetizer of fish balls. Not too bad. I ordered the combo plate which had the special. I know it wasn't prepared today. Was dry and like beef jerky. I chewed a few pieces and placed them in the appetizer basket. The lumpia was over fried, the lumpia was tasteless. The only enjoyable item was the rice. Ordered chicken adobo. Was salty as heck. Was really disappointed. I truly hope they can do better in the furture. read more

I came to lunch here as a recommendation from a client of mine. The food was wonderful but what made me love this place was the woman up front who was so personable and taught me about Filipino food. She brought me different chilis and sauces to try and even taught me secrets on making a good pancit. And their prices of the market items they have for sale are very good. I bought pancit noodles and seasoned vinegar. Very pleasant experience read more

As a Filipino-American myself I was personally excited to try this new place. I had went today with high hopes that it would taste just as good as the food back in the Philippines. I went there today for breakfast and ordered two of the chicken tocino bowls. When tasting it for the first time I was somewhat disappointed. The juiciness of the meat wasn't flavorful how I remember it to be. Also, tocino is meant to have a sweet taste to it. It did not taste sweet, if anything salty. Sweetness is key when it comes to our cuisine which this dish unfortunately lacked. I didn't hate the dish because it still tasted decent but for further knowledge I believe that this dish can be improved. Another dish that I had ordered was the lechon bowl. I was upset over the fact that the marination wasn't as flavorful. If they had included more seasoning this could be easily perfected. As for the rice it was a bit on the harder side but this can be easily adjusted as well. As mentioned before I do not hate the dish I just believe that it can be improved. I know that the restaurant has just opened, but when it comes to authentic cuisine please give it justice. Hopefully my fellow kababayans can enjoy this place once it improves. I'll definitely be back and hopefully next time I will give five stars. read more

Was very excited to hear of a Filipino restaurant finally opening in Modesto. Decided to try it out today. I ordered the kare-kare and fresh lumpia. Got some adobong peanuts while waiting for my order. Kare kare is pretty good, vegetables are fresh and bagoong just the right amount of salty. The owner Tatum was very warm and friendly, and was open to suggestions for improvement. I appreciate that and I am rooting for this place to achieve its full potential. Will surely recommend this to my friends and coworkers. read more

Food was really good I will order again. I had the family Pancit, and the spring roll.

Me and my friend finished a halo halo dessert and noticed a DEAD fly mixed at the bottom of the fruit jellys. MOST BLAND FILIPINO FOOD EVER. Wanted to add that It's super slow in there, understaffed, silverware was dirty, only 2 menus in the whole restaurant, and they forget about orders easily along with messing up what we get. And if you're planning to apply here DONT. My friend used to work there and only had horror stories. They purposely understaff, keep servers cash tips (and give them to the chefs instead), horrible management, no server training, and the list goes on. read more

I looked up Best lumpia's und Modesto and was directed to this place. I love lumpias and was so disappointed to get these 2 inch over fried lumpia's that had no flavor whatsoever! So disappointed. It seems this place has a lot of logistics to figure out as the staff seems very unorganized. As for the food, it lacks in flavor and freshness. We ordered the chicken adobo which is usually very flavorful when prepared correctly, this one however was bland and seemed to have been sitting awhile. The lumpia had a foul fishy taste to it. Unfortunately, we decided to throw our food away as we were apprehensive about getting sick. read more

Being Filipino, I was really excited when I heard a new Filipino restaurant was going to open in Modesto. Suffice to say, my excitement ended the minute I tried their food. First off, the food is WAY overpriced for what you get. Portions are dismal and they do not give enough meat in their servings...you're either getting too much liquid, as in their chicken tinola (all bland tasting soup and no substance) or not enough, as in their extremely dry and tasteless adobo. Now let's talk about what you do get...the food is bland at best. It makes me feel badly for the non-Filipino people eating it thinking it's good because they don't know any better. Portions are SUPER small for the price they charge! I have ordered everything on their menu and the only decent thing they make is the Shanghai lumpia. If you're looking for tasty and delicious Filipino food, I suggest going elsewhere. This place does not represent how good Filipino food really is. In fact, those that know will definitely be disappointed by their food. My 13 year old can cook better Filipino dishes! read more

Wasn't impressed. Super excited to see a Filipino restaurant in Modesto. But I think they need some more time to figure out portions to prices. Also the chicken adobo was super bland and grey. Try using some bay leaves in it as well... The lumpia is 1 lumpia cut into 3 littles pieces and charged as if their 3 whole pieces. Bigger lumpia and I'll be back! read more

It was my first time to visit Kusina after my brothers insisted that I go and check out their food. Yesteday, I did go with my brother and the first thing I noticed is how spacious, and clean the place is. Also, the tables were strategically placed where it is not crowding the other customers. I came here to initially taste the food as we, the family are planning a luncheon after a ceremonial service. The Manang hostess was very gracious and I especially want to give a big shout out to the new cook - NAYED. After tasting the food, I decided to have our luncheon be catered by them . NAYED was very acommodating to adjust our taste needs. For example, I found a dish to be too greasy and salty, I asked if NAYED could alter my request and she willingly obliged to it. She later added that if there's anything else we want to be adjusted according to our taste, that there will be no problem. Looking forward to having our luncheon cooked and prepared by NAYED . As a Filipino who seldom cater to Filipino food due to its extensive oily and calorie consuming delicacies, I request that you give KUSINA a try. They will honor your taste request accordingly. Modesto needs a quality ethnic Filipino restaurant as more and more bay area residents who are familiar with these delicacies are moving to Modesto. read more

I don't get it? There are some really bad reviews and I can only assume that those who left them are really miserable and petty people. Anytime a new restaurant opens there are going to have issues, you know iron out the wrinkles. I'm not Filipino but I've been eating and learned to cook some of my favorite dishes for the past 30 + years and I thought this was delicious!! Some people, you just can't please. Cute, clean little restaurant. Went during lunch on a weekday and there were quite a few people sitting inside and still a few tables available. We were able to order right away. We got the pork belly combo, lumpia, turon, halo halo, and the special for the day was Kare Kare. The combo plate was so good. The pork had a lot of flavor and was served with white rice, pancit, and some lumpia. I was totally satisfied. My friend got the Kare Kare. It seemed brothier (is that a word) than I am used to. The way my mom makes it is creamier with more peanut taste. It was not bad, just different. We were kind of sad the special does not automatically come with white rice on the side. You have to order it separate. She also got the halo halo. She liked it. I'm not a fan of halo halo in general so I cannot attest to it. For my dessert, I got the turon. Let me tell you... those are dangerously good. They had a side of some sort of sweet ube dip... mmm. Did I say dangerously good already? Because they were. Nice crisp outside, sweet and firm inside. Can't wait to try other dishes. read more

First of all I was excited to see that Modesto finally has a Filipino Restaurant. Unfortunately our food experience was not great. We did not mind waiting as long as the food compensates for our time. Granted they only have been open for 2 months so I hope they take this as a constructive feedback and makes some adjustments to grow and to continue serving Filipino food in Modesto. Here are the cons: *Authentic Pancit, does not have red bell peppers and the noodles are so cheap that the serving is to small for the price. *Lechon was dry and the skin was not crispy it looked more like pulled pork. We also specifically asked if it will comes with the sauce and they said yes but they forgot to include it. * Diniguan, was lacking flavor. *Halo Halo was lacking the ingredients its predominantly all shaved ice. * Chicken and Pork BBQ need to be marinated longer. It's just ok. * Lumpia serving was to small for the price. Pro's: *Daing Milk Fish was good * Turon was really good! Overall, I am still super stoke on having a Filipino restaurant adding food diversity in Modesto. I would give them another try maybe in 6 months to give them a chance to adjust. I love supporting small businesses and hope they can tweak some of the holes. Also if you want to be successful you need to serve Good QUALITY dishes to your clientele. Put someone in charge of the quality of the food and if it's not up to par stop serving them and throw them out. The cost will eventually even out once you gain your loyal customers. Your restaurant is a representation of Filipino cuisine and word of mouth will spread like wildfire if you represent it well. Good luck! read more

I ordered chicken adobo and dinuguan and was disappointed. The taste and flavor was okay but the way these dishes were cooked was more like a soup, so not what I'm traditionally used to.
