    Hands down the best sushi in New York City. It's authentic and the quality of fish is unmatched. I have a fantastic meal every single time. This is my go-to place for sushi. It's very tasty and fresh. The menu is traditional sushi (fish and rice only). I wish there are more restaurants like this in New York. It's not just a run of the mill business. This place has soul and you can feel it in the ambiance and taste in the food. Coming here is like being transported to Japan. The freshness is the same as having sushi at Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan. The lunch price is unbeatable for the quality of fish they have. The head chef, Uezu-san has been making sushi for over 50 years. His experience and eye for quality is amazing. His Sous-chef, Maria, has been doing this for over a decade. They are a dynamic duo. It's the same people who work there every day, year after year. Kimiko-san is Uezu-Sam's wife. She's so sweet and kind. Haji-san is efficient and always has a positive attitude. They're an amazing team all together. I absolutely love this place.

    This place OMAKASE is not worth it . I went there for the first time for omakase witch is $300-up per person. But they dint have any Corse. nothing from kitchen. Just gave us what ever he has . Normally , omakase restaurant they have corse and ask at the end if we want more . We (2ppl) paid $1100 (+tip) Even we didn't drink any alcohol. Maybe we add expensive ones . But still don't get it how could that happen $500 each !? sushi were not even worth it . These were just ok sushi . Even the place , waiter or serves were not $$$$ restaurant quality. I won't go back . I know way better sushi place and cheaper .

    KenScale: 7.5/10 Kuruma Zushi is one of the Midtown sushi restaurants that's been around for a while now. Unlike dinner where omakase menu starts at whopping $300 per person, the lunch options at this place look like a bargain by a mile, with sushi specials starting at $25-30 per person. I've been to this place for a couple of times before for a quick lunch outside of work, and had a chance to revisit recently. I went with the sushi deluxe option that contains multiple nigiris along with maki rolls. While the overall quality of fish wasn't bad, I felt it wasn't as fresh as I had tasted at other top sushi restaurants in the city. Perhaps I've been pampered with all the recent sushi restaurant outings? It certainly is a great value for lunch where you sit at the bar and watch chef Toshihiro Uezo and his couple of lieutenants in action, but on an absolute level in terms of overall quality of sushi, I had to wonder whether the bar was saving the best pieces for dinner. Getting a reservation is not terribly difficult and the turnover at lunch is quick so coming here for quick lunch shouldn't be a problem. The space has that secret aura (you have to go up the second floor of an old building) that is welcoming without being stuffy. For quick sushi lunch, Kuruma Zushi is probably the best bet if you live/work in Midtown Manhattan. I want to, however, reserve my judgment of where this place sits until I have a chance to visit for dinner (not sure when that is going to happen given the hefty price tag).

    Was reading through reviews of here and decided to check it out for lunch the next day. It's not tough to get a seat but you'll probably be at the bar. FYI, if you want any of the other specials aside from Sushi and Sushi Deluxe; make a reservation. They don't serve the other specials at the bar. Went with the Sushi Deluxe ($35). Comes with miso soup, nine pieces of nigiri sushi and a roll; that's a steal for this quality of food.The fish here is spectacular, incredibly fresh and just melts in your mouth. While it is steep for lunch, you venture into this hidden gem because you want the good stuff! They change up the assortment daily too. I came back here two times the next week for lunch and brought my godsister. I want to try the Tekka Special but can't seem to get a table. Have not tried the omakase but this is my place for sushi lunch. Love it and Mr. Uezu who is fun to chat with. He does however run his line chefs like quarry workers.

    The place is on the second floor, an elevator ride from the street level. The menu is structured in such a way that chef makes pretty much all choices for you. You just pick either $100, $140, or $300 and over option. I picked a $100 option - chef's choice of sushi with one roll of chef's choice. I also wanted one uni sushi so I had to add a $12 order - one uni sushi - to my $100 order of the unknown sushi. The food arrived fairly fast but the quality and taste were underwhelming. Long story short, our bill for three rolls, two appetizers (seaweed salad and fatty tuna), ten pieces of sushi and one small sake was $250 before tax and tip. Very poor value for the money and the experience was borderline frustrating and underwhelming. I don't mind paying fair amount for great food and experiences but this time it was just not worth it. The place is traditional and snobby (traditional Japanese places do not expect to receive tips) but the bill still had a line to add a tip. I was very embarrased in front of my friend for chosing this place and bringing him there. No, I would not return or recommend this restaurant.

    Hidden on the second floor, the place is so old school! All waiters and chefs are Japanese. I sat at the bar and it was like live performance of Japanese cooking. The other diners were having an omakase ($300) and it seemed awesome. The chefs were very very friendly (and old) and willing to answer questions (although their English is kinda hard to understand). I had a lunch special sashimi set ($35): Spanish mackerel, tuna, fluke, hamachi. Such a good price! Fish were extremely fresh and tasty. It comes with some rice, fish roe, seaweed, miso soup, tea, and pickled ginger. Can not wait to go back.

    We came here for lunch. My friend and i ordered the sushi deluxe. The fish was fresh. The rice was no good though. I wonder if it's because it's Monday. Regardless, the rice should have been better. It was cold and hard. To me, that's not fresh. I peaked at other diners plate and it looked better. I wonder if it's because they are Japanese. Who knows? Maybe the grass just looks better from the other side. I would still come back though for$35 for nine pieces and a roll. I will probably not come back on a Monday. This place is hidden. Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor.

    This is for their lunch deluxe review - 4 star (maybe a 3.5 if there is one) - Price reasonable for a renowned place - fish very fresh - hot matcha tea/ miso soup/ hot towel live up to its standard - BUT! RICE is very very very stiff, not marinated well enough...big disappointment - owner chef very nice and friendly but not ALL of his apprentice (not to pointing someone particular as it's just my first time) SO if you are serious about sushi, I won't suggest coming here, even if the lunch price is very very reasonable - well, why not save it to a dinner Omakase at Duomoduomo But, if you wanted to try out and still not have a fixed sushi tasting style(perhaps you like stiff rice) OR SASHIMI, this is a good spot :)

    Fantastic sushi in an unassuming location. I cannot believe just how low-key the place looks compared with how amazing the food is. Go now. I have been eating sushi for 20 years and have had it all over the US, Asia, and even a bit in Europe. I have had good sushi, bad sushi, and amazing sushi. This place serves amazing sushi. In NYC for a trip with the kids, we stopped at Kuruma after finding it on Yelp because it was halfway between our restaurant and the show we were seeing at 8pm. It was a bit hard to find - construction in the area, a hard-to-find door, a nice, sleeping doorman, and then just an elevator. Take the elevator up one floor, and you open up directly into the restaurant. The place looked authentic, clean, and empty. We were the only customers. Gulp. The host greeted us quickly and sat us at a large round table overlooking the main window, which was covered in construction equipment. Oh well, we were not here for the view. We ordered tamago for our kids as we looked at the rest of the menu. The tamago came, and for the first time ever, it was worth mentioning: rather than a slab of egg on a bed of rice, it came to us as a wedge of egg with a slit cut down the middle that was packed with rice. It was so cool we took a picture (see picture here on yelp). The kids loved it. We ended up order 6 orders over the course of an hour or so. Now, on to the big guns. This is not your neighborhood sushi joint where you may get a tuna roll when you are feeling gutsy. No, this was clearly a place where you had to go a bit deeper. We went all in and took a tour of nearly everything on the menu. Highlights included: Giant Clam Octopus Very Fatty Tuna Abalone Fatty Tuna Squid Kampachi Yellowtail Tuna We loved it all. It was fresh, perfectly cut, and beautifully displayed. In particular, the kampachi really impressed us - it went well beyond the usual, and was like the best hamachi you ever had on some sort of magical bender. Our server was extremely kind, and very attentive. He gave the kids plastic gadgets for the end of their chopsticks to make eating with them easier than usual. He did not mind at all when we ordered food and drinks 7 or 8 times over the hour - hour-and-a-half. We were, after all, the only customers!! How in the world is that possible? In short, this place is a victory for sushi lovers as well as a victory for capitalism. Rarely am I surprised by the bill. Here I was. WOW! It may have been expensive (really expensive), but it was worth every penny. I will go back. And next time, it will be omakase. Bring it.

The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

I enjoyed most of the pieces but I will say I don't like their amaebi or uni at all. I'm not sure what kind of uni is used here but it's the type with a very strong mineral flavor & aftertaste that I don't find enjoyable. The girl who brought our check wasn't exactly rude, but she seemed visibly annoyed when we asked about using Apple Pay but ended up putting the charge on my card and it felt like asking her to bring over the Apple Pay machine was somehow inconveniencing her. She also didn't bother asking whether I wanted my receipt. Maybe none of it was intentional, but her overall demeanor came across that way and left us ending the meal with a bad taste in our mouths.
