My husband and I have been to the location in Chandler and we really liked it, so we were happy to give the Tempe location a try. We arrived on a Friday night, around 7:30/8pm. The place was extremely busy but luckily we were able to get a table. We ordered the cumin lamb, the beef pies, the house special stir fry (which means all meats - chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp), and the juicy pork steam buns. The cumin lamb was delicious and probably our favorite. My husband didn't really enjoy the stir fry and added a lot of hot oil to spice it up. I liked it but thought the shrimp was over cooked. The beef pies were really good as well. We were almost done with our meal and had to remind our server that we hadn't received our pork buns. Thankfully, after reminding our server, the buns were brought out relatively quickly. Overall, the food is really good and the service is quick and efficient. It's definitely worth trying if you are in the area and craving some good Chinese food! read more

Recommended? This place is okay. But wouldn't be my go to spot for Chinese food. Food: food is okay here. I know they have two locations. I think the one near ASU has better flavor. Price: portions are average from other Chinese restaurants I've been to. But portion size seems to be smaller than most places. I would say this is my 2nd time at "Chou's kitchen" but not this location. The first location near ASU seems to be pretty good and decent. However, I decided to try this location since it was actually closer to me. My family ordered 5 dishes, an eggplant dish, ma po tofu, a lamb dish, potato spaghetti dish, and pork. All were just meh which was kinda disappointing. This is probably why the names of the dishes weren't so memorable too. I honestly think the ma po tofu was the best one out of the five we ordered. It wasn't spicy when ma po tofu is usually spicy. So for people who can't take spicy food but always wanted to try ma po tofu then this would b a great choice. I liked that the plate came out steaming hot and the temperature stayed hot/warm the entire meal. They serve Szechuan flavor food but again, most dishes aren't very spicy or spicy at all. read more

I can't believe I'm writing this as only 4 years ago this was my favorite Chinese and top 5 of all restaurants in the Valley. They recently changed ownership and all of their recipes. Food is low quality Americanized Chinese food now and nothing like it was under the previous owners. The quality of the meat is poor. The dumplings had less meat. The Szechuan Beef is completely different and in a bad way... I do not recommend this new version of Chou's. read more

We stopped in here on a Saturday evening after a full day of furniture-moving (so we were all hungry). The initial challenge we had was parking. The restaurant is in a small plaza with other businesses. One of these (we were not sure which) was having some...event. It seemed to involve long lines of people (some in anime cosplay attire) and also anime themed tricked out Japanese-model cars. This led to congestion and somewhat scarce parking, but we did score a space. I would assume that this was not the norm (or at least only happens on Saturday nights...?), but FYI. Inside, the restaurant has a moderately-sized dining room (no patio). It has a sort of 'well worn' look, like it has been there a while and seen a large volume of customer traffic. We were seated promptly. The menus were in both English and Chinese (I think). One of our group confirmed that they had a lot of authentic dishes. I ordered some pork dumplings and a small hot-and-sour soup. I think the others ordered the ma po tofu and some other sort of bun-dish. When the food arrived, my soup order was about the size of a mixing bowl. Everyone had some (I had 3 servings) and we took home a large container of leftover soup. Everyone (including one native Chinese) agreed that the food was very good. This restaurant apparently does not serve beer or wine - just FYI. This place definitely hits the spot if you're looking for the perfect Chinese comfort, food dishes. It really reminds me of a home-cooked meal with all the classic Asian flavors. I really appreciated the extensive options on the menu that offered a large variety of classic Chinese dishes that can be hard to find at other places. We ordered several dishes, but the one that stood out the most was the sliced beef rolls which were perfectly crispy, tender, well, flavored, and left us craving more. We also really enjoyed cumin lamb skewers that were very well seasoned. Overall everything was delicious. Very well reasonably priced and the staff was very welcoming. This is definitely my new go to place for any Chinese food cravings in Arizona. Would highly recommend checking out! read more

Ok, very unassuming place with mediocre ambience but the food was really good! Our table ordered the hot and sour soup and there was 4 of us and we still had leftovers! It was spicy and delicious! We ordered pork and cabbage dumplings, pork soup dumplings, beef fried noodles, two green onion pancakes, cashew shrimp, and pork pan fried pork buns. The pork soup dumplings, soup, and beef fried noodles were my faves but truly, everything was good and I'm interested to try more dishes. I will be going back with my friends to try more menu items! We got takeout and ordered: - Xiao long baos - beef pie - dumplings - scallion pancake - Eggplant - fried rice My favorites were the eggplant dish and soup dumplings (Xiao long bao) for flavor. All of these dishes besides the rice don't really travel well so the beef pie could've been crispier as well as the scallion pancakes. Overall an okay meal. The soup dumplings were our favorite part of the meal, perfect with a bit of chili oil on top. The spicy beef stew was overwhelmed by the smell and effect of the numbing spice. Salt and pepper shrimp was not what we expected. It was deep fried but breading was oddly dry. The eggplant was good but I wouldn't know there was ground pork in it if I wasn't told. There was probably a tablespoon if ground pork in the entire dish. If we return I will give the wonton soup and pork rib with green beans a try. read more

Had the triple pepper sizzling chicken. Spicy for sure but very tasty. Just avoid biting into the Serrano hot peppers (or whatever they use). Red and green bell peppers are not as spicy. I'd like to start this by saying that I am not a fan of American Chinese food. Chou's Kitchen to my great surprise is not American Chinese food. It is legitimate Northern China style CUISINE!! The food here is outstanding. Today we had a staff meeting for the Az Asian Chamber of Commerce. I must laughingly admit that the staff meeting was distracted because the food was so fantastic. The beef cakes and the pork dumplings were TDF! The other menu items were also wonderful. We ordered family style and the restaurant staff was very prompt and helpful. The food is good enough not outstanding but what kills this place is the complete and utter lack of any type of service whatsoever!! You aren't greeted other than being told where to seat yourself. They eventually take your order then bring it then disappear!!! They come back with a payment terminal asking for a tip and are annoyed if you ask for anything else at that point! So disappointing, it's really not that hard to do the basics of refilling a drink, providing napkins and at least ONE check in. I'm super patient and low maintenance and I hate leaving poor reviews but we will never come back here. The other reviews are spot on, this isn't Chou's kitchen like it used to be. The Chandler Chou's kitchen is still the best spot so Google them and give them a shot!!! read more

This used to be our favorite Chinese spot in the valley. Sadly, food is no longer tasty. All of our dishes were radically different recipes than before and nothing tasted fresh. Chewy tough meat and wildly salty. I tasted the MSG "buzz" which never happened before. They never came back to check on us / refill waters so we were sooo thirsty with all that salt! We left most of the food uneaten. RIP Chou's Kitchen. So sad , we won't be back. read more

The house everything noodle is great. The special everything fried rice is great. The Szechuan beef is the best. Beef is deep fried served with fried dry chili and peanut. 3.5stars, although I think their original Chandler location is a touch better. Chou's Kitchen is one of the better Chinese restaurants I've found in the area, and I'm grateful for that. But growing up in Northern China with its amazing flour-based cuisine has made me a tougher critic on dumplings and rolls and other traditional flour-based foods, and Chou's Kitchen didn't quite hit the 4star mark for me. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall, and rush hour gets pretty crazy. Service is welcoming but frazzled, and it does take a few flags before waitress comes over. The inside is casual, and there are mostly 3-4 person tables with a couple larger tables in the middle. Beef pie: These are hands down my favorite dish here. The ground beef inside is seasoned really well, the wrapper isn't too thick, and the pan fry just makes the filling juicy and outside crispy. It can be a little heavy because there aren't any additions to the filling except for ground beef, but I order this every time I stop in. Beef wrap: This consists of sliced beef with cilantro and raw onion wrapped in a green onion pancake. I thought the flavor here was pretty good, although it's the time I've seen raw onion used instead of green onion. I think I prefer the latter a little more, but the textural contrast was nice with the raw onion. The green onion pancake was cooked decently well, and this would be another dish I'd order again. Chive and vermicelli flour pockets: I'm not sure how to translate this.. but in any case, I grew up with these pan-fried chive and vermicelli flour pockets, and I adore them. I thought the flavoring was a little bland in this rendition, and the chives and vermicelli were slightly over cooked so that they were on the mushier side. I would have also liked more egg in here to balance the strong flavor of the chive. The outside shell was a bit soft; if it had been pan-fried a minute or two more, I think the wrapper would've been perfect. I might order these again in the future to satisfy a craving, but the execution fell a little short for me. Xiao long bao: These are ubiquitous in the Bay Area, and even there I feel like I've rarely found a faultless version. The dumplings here had wrappers that were on the thick side, fillings that bordered on too oily, and a few that had leaked in the steamer. The flavor was okay, but I probably wouldn't order these again. Non-flour dishes: I wouldn't recommend the stir-fried dishes here. I tried the cumin lamb and sautéed eggplant, and while they weren't bad, it's clear the chef is more comfortable making flour-based foods. The cumin lamb was mostly onion, the lamb was over cooked, and the seasoning erred on the salty side. The eggplant was okay, but it was incredibly oily (even taking into consideration that eggplant usually has to be oily) and very saucy. Out of the two, I preferred the eggplant. Chances are I'll be back at Chou's Kitchen, and I'm looking forward to having their beef pies and beef wraps again. read more

Came here for a later dinner with my siblings that were in town. We didn't have to wait and were seated immediately. Between the four of us, we ordered veggie dumplings, hot and sour soup, veggie noodles, tofu, and they ordered a chicken dish which I didn't have any of. They have a great selection for vegan/vegetarian. One note with their tofu is that they could add more veggies...or just something more than just carrots. I think they had maybe two shiitake mushrooms. The dumplings were so good, the soup was so-so. Overall, I think the veggie dishes could've used a little more flavor. The service was interesting...which I never come to a Chinese restaurant for service. There were a few ladies that were super nice, always checking on us. But another lady was just more standoffish....'what?? Ok let me get them' they have call buttons at every seat, which makes it easy to call your waiter over, but the one seemed annoyed about it. I was on the side of town and decided to get their soup dumplings. My husband and I got an order to go. Unfortunately the soup had already absorbed into the dumpling but the taste was still delicious. Hopefully once COVID is over we'll be able to eat the dumplings at the actual restaurant. We also ordered salt and pepper shrimp however I'm not sure if there is the option to get it breaded. The pork fried rice was delicious and not too salty compared to other spots. Definitely worth a try for soup dumplings and price point is very reasonable. Currently you can order online and pick up within 20 minutes so not bad at all! read more

Pork juicy dumpling is everything! Okay, we literally walked in at 9-30 pm and were the last customers for the day. They took our order immediately and the food came right away: hot and fresh. We had small hot and sour soup, juicy pork dumplings, chicken stir fried noodles and cumin Lamb. No kidding the food was delicious and fresh. The small soup comes in a big bowl, serves 3 people. The juicy dumpling is straight winner. The dumplings tasted fresh with flavourful soup inside bursting with pork juice and soft minced meat filling. The noodles was perfectly seasoned and not so oilly. And my second favorite has to be cumin lamb. Lamb marinated, stir fried with veggies, and cumin seeds. It came with a small side of rice. Since we were the last customers, they didn't compromise on the food. Each item was made from scratch ( I can vouch for it) and tasted fresh. That's important and speaks a lot about their committment. Am so happy we walked in here for our last minute dinner rush. Left so satisfied and happy, all smiles That's what a good food does to you! I was in Tempe for the night and as I am always in search of the perfect dumpling, I looked on Yelp for their choices. Chou's popped up as an option. I found the restaurant in a small strip mall and The parking lot was pretty full. I was seated quickly and the table was set with all the right tools- chopsticks, spoons, soy sauce and chili oil. The menu was packed with authentic options including a dozen types of freshly made dumplings. I chose juicy (soup) dumplings and chive pork shrimp dumplings. I also bought schezwan beef and white rice to go to bring to a coworker. The waitress brought the chive dumplings first. As you can see they were plump and large and so good! I had to restrain myself from eating too many before the juicy soup dumplings arrived. When they did, they didn't disappoint. The dough was thin and soft and almost melted in my mouth as I but into it. The filing was well seasoned and smooth. I ate a bunch of each and took the rest with me although I could have finished them all! When we opened the schezwan beef for my friend it looked like a commercial for heart burn! The container was 80% chili and 20% beef. Okay maybe 70/30. The taste of the beef was really solid with a numbing fire that almost was overwhelming. But it fulfilled its name! The sad part was that there were so many chili's and so little beef it was a disappointment. Overall though I would give this place another shot as the dumplings stood on their own. If I got that beef dish in the restaurant I would have sent it back. Dang I could go for those soup dumplings right now!! read more

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurant here in Tempe! I always get the bean curd with Chinese, celery and pork dish. I've had nothing like it before as it provides the texture and taste that I love. I really enjoy the complex flavors of many dishes, and anytime I want Chinese, I order from here. I've only eaten here twice in-person, and each time was a pleasant experience. The servers are nice and food always comes out in a timely manner. The interior of the restaurant is very simple and to the point but that's not terrible important to me. Overall, I recommend this place and urge you to go! read more

Only open for carry out during Covid but this place has very authentic Chinese flavors without having to drive all the way out to Mesa. This restaurant is literally the only place in the valley that has authentic taste in Mapo tofu that actually numbs your mouth like it should from the Szechuan peppercorns! Another go-to that I always order is bean curd with shredded pork with Chinese celery. I've ordered this dish from them multiple times and unfortunately the quality kind of areas on the ones I got extra green bell peppers and not very much Chinese celery which altered the taste to the bitter side but 4/5 it's been spot on. One good thing is when you dying in here they don't charge you for extra rice. Just like it's unheard of to be charge for extra rice at a restaurant in China! read more

We went for date night on Saturday. Had this place on my list for awhile. The pork soup dumplings are every bit as delicious as previously posted. We'd do a double order again in a heartbeat. Pork juicy and tender, dumplings toothsome with an explosion of all flavored soup. Also for the salt and pepper shrimp that the husband loved, at least 13 big shrimp that were cooked perfectly an order of fried rice, which was on the verge of salty and I do love salt. It was better the next day, after taking it home I ate it all. We tried the beef patties, husband hated them, I thought it was ok. If you want a Chinese hamburger or are feeding kids this is for you. Also 3 egg rolls, which were crispy and flavorful and didn't have the sulfur cabbage flavor I hate in these rolls. Not as good as Tottie's Asian Fusion, but this would be my #2 best egg rolls in Phoenix. One order soup dumplings, one fried rice, one salt and pepper shrimp, 3 beef patties, 3 egg rolls and 2 waters was about $65 before tip, so a little pricey for a date night, but you'll have food left over.
