I am familiar with just a few Filipino dishes and love them, so was excited to try Kubo. There was a bit of a wait since they were hopping on Friday night, so we sat at the cozy bar. Soon enough we were whisked into the open-air dining room and seated street-side. The weather was perfect so my son and I loved our perch, able to people watch and appreciate the blooming flower boxes. Unfortunately they are still not able to import beer from the Philippines which would have been fun, so we tried something else on tap. Our ceviche and fried zucchini starters were outstanding, as was the crab-crusted salmon and rice-noodle pancit entrees. Good-sized portions. The dessert menu had many choices and we decided tho split a dish of ube ice cream, which is made with taro root. It's simple but must-have! A good Filipino restaurant is hard to come by sometimes. How did kubo fare? Let's take a look: Ambiance Kubo is a pretty nice clean establishment. It has a dark component but not too dark where it is hard to read the menu, at least where we sat. They do have a half bar to the right when walking in. We had a table towards the front. The seats were comfortable, as far as high top chairs go. The restaurant seemed a little cramped when I excused myself to the bathroom. Service The service was excellent. We got our food in a very timely manner. They also refilled our water pretty frequently and checked on us to see if everything was going well. Food The food was delicious. We ordered the Lechon Kawali, pancit, adobo ribs, pampano escabeche, and a Longgnisa burger. The lechon was juicy and still retained it crispy skin. It is paired with some garlic rice and some sautéed vegetables. The pancit had a nice flavor and it was not overwhelmed with celery. The pampano is a fried fish in a sweet 'n' sour. It was nicely cooked where the fish was not a piece of jerky. The longgnisa burger was delicious. It was very flavorful as with a fried egg on top. The egg was perfectly cooked where the yolk was runny. Unfortunately, the pork ribs adobo was dried. All in all the meal was delicious but the adobo was unfortunately a let down. We rounded dinner off with some halo halo. It is served in a medium sundae cup. It is big enough for 2-3 people. It ended up hard to mix because it was full and got kind of messy. Overall Kubo is a pretty good Filipino restaurant. I would say the serving size is a bit small, but can argue that it is just enough for a serving, either that, or I just eat too much. The price of each plate is a little high, but comparable to restaurants around Chicago. Again, unfortunately the rib adobo was kind of a let down. It did not seem to have that vinegary flavor that I usually get with the adobo I usually eat. Also, the ribs were unfortunately dry as well. We walked up and the place wasn't very busy, but it was Thursday at 8:15 p.m. and Chicago's Lollapalooza started tonight. Most of the other bars and restaurants on Belmont were far less than just the night before. We were immediately seated by what appeared to be the owner or manager. Very friendly and helpful. We ordered the Seafood balls as an appetizer. They were good and the aioli was excellent, but I would either suggest larger balls of seafood or more than 4 skewers. Regardless, they were very tasty. My wife ordered the crab-crusted salmon, and I ordered shrimp curry. Even though it wasn't very busy, I gave them 4 stars for service because the entrees were 5-10 minutes later than I would have expected. However, the wait was worth it. My wife enjoys both crab and salmon. The crusted crab was excellent (she gave me a taste) but the salmon wasn't as firm as she has come to expect. As this is a Phillipino recipe, it could be because of the cuisine, or they just overcooked the salmon. If I were to order it again, I would specify how I want the salmon prepared. I ordered the Shrimp Curry and it arrived in a very large bowl, full of shrimp, carrots, green beans, and mushrooms. The coconut based broth was full of taste with just the right amount of curry. It was very good. It was hot (temperature) so I know it wasn't waiting to be brought to our table. It was fresh, the vegetables crunchy as they should be, etc. Along with both my wife's and my dish were two balls of "garlic rice" which were accompanied. I put mine right into the curry dish which really made up a perfect dish for me. My bowl was too big and I shouldn't have finished it because I wanted to try a Phillipino desert, but it was just too good and I couldn't stop. I liked the place, and the service, and the food. I helped organize a large dinner for 12 people at Kubo, and I have to say we weren't disappointed! We arrived and was promptly seated on the patio with a large table decked out for us. There was a live DJ playing music which was pretty awesome to have, even though it meant conversing with people at the table a bit difficult. I ordered the pork ribs adobo and other people ordered chicken adobo, lumpia, pancit, and a couple other dishes. I like the dish and finished the entire plate (I was starving), but I have to say that the place is a bit pricey for what they offered (hence the -1 star). My pork ribs adobo had 4 ribs and a small serving of rice and veggies. I believe that they should've given us a bit more rice since I finished eating it before I finished the meat. The top of the ribs were also a bit drier than I liked but the bottom side of the ribs were delicious (attributing it to the fat). However, the SERVICE WAS AMAZING. The waiter/waitress would refill all 12 of our water cups so quickly, which was great. They let us order the drinks first, allowed people to talk and mingle, before coming to take our food orders. The food also all came at once which was great so that no one felt left out when people started eating. They were also accommodating to a large group of people, which we appreciated! My friend and I wanted to try an ethnic food we don't often have. When scrolling through options nothing seemed right. We finally go to Kubo which was about a 12 minute walk from where we were so we gave them a call. The host was so nice and inviting we just had to give it a try. We walk over there and the set up just looks awesome. They have a huge outdoor, covered, patio, which had the tables spaced out for Covid. We walk inside and are greet with the same enthusiasm that we were on the phone. They take us to a table, but make sure it's where we feel comfortable sitting. They have high tops and low tops, so there's a place for everyone. I'm not sure who was our server or who was the manager, because they were both so attentive and welcoming throughout our stay. After going over their menu and drink selection they mentioned their featured beer. A local beer from twisted hippo called PLUMPass. They described it as a light plumb ale, and we were sold right away. It did not disappoint. We each had two and would have had more if it wasn't 6.8%. Refreshing and delicious, a great was to start our meal! For food, we started with small plates where we had fried calamari, tuna ceviche, and pork ribs. They were all excellent, my favorite of the 3 was the ceviche, but that's a hard decision. For our entrees I got the Crab Crusted Salmon, which was incredible. A super thick fillet of salmon crusted with real crab. Served with this amazing rice and cabbage vegetable mix. Seriously awesome. My friend got the pancit, and it tasted truly homemade. Every flavor was perfect. The salmon took a while to cook, not that we noticed from the great time we were having, but the staff clearly noticed and came over with 2 delicious shots to thank us for our patience. After all that food, we saw this interesting purple ice cream walk passed us, so we had to try it. When we asked about ice cream we were immediately recommended the Ube ice cream, with the description being delicious and purple, we said yes and ordered it. They did not disappoint. I wish I could describe it better, it's not too sweet as you would expect, not too floral. It was just perfect. After all this we got our bill and it was EXTREMELY reasonable. They were nice to my daughter who was running around and grabbing everything. Service was very good. Tonight I had their Shrimp Curry and I was delighted with the plump shrimp, with lot's of veggies in a delicious curry sauce. Paired with a full flavored Old Zinfandel. Been craving for Filipino food so a friend and I decided to check this place out. Kubo is located in Lakeview and they are open right now and reservations are preferred. We were seated by the patio area which was great, it wasn't so busy today which was nice, I'm Filipino and I've been to a couple of Filipino restaurants in the city aside from this however, I've heard things from friends so I wanted to check it out for sure. We came in today and was greeted by the host who was very nice and friendly, the outdoor seating is really nice and it's perfect for the summer, they were all wearing masks and gloves and sanitizers were available which was great. The host told me that it's an Americanized version of what Filipino cuisine to cater the neighborhood, at first I thought it made sense because knowing Lakeview seems like there's not a lot of non American restaurants in the area however, I was also thinking why make it so American and not the authentic Filipino food? The neighborhood could use it and be introduced to what authentic Filipino cuisine is. I was intrigued by that statement actually so I was more curious about the food. Our appetizers we ordered egg rolls and the "fish balls" the appetizers were good the sauce for the fish balls was a little spicy for my taste and the egg rolls man that was the longest egg roll I've seen overall it was delicious Main course we ordered the Lechon Sisig and the Pancit. I am so glad that the Sisig was actually Lechon and the plate was sizzling. The pancit was delicious both entrees were tasty the sisig really reminded me of home it taste better with authentic Filipino beer. All entrees comes with a side of garlic rice as well. The owner was there to talk to us during our dinner and she was lovely. Dessert we ended our dinner with Ube ice cream which was tasty and comes with a ube stick! Overall we had a really good experience. I don't know if I would agree with it being the "American version" of a Filipino food but I would say "Filipino food with a modern twist" the server was attentive, the host and the owner is really friendly as well. Lastly, they have great selection of authentic Filipino beers and cocktails. I did not order any alcohol but the next time I'll check it out I'll definitely give it a try. The only thing that I wasn't really a fan about was the music. Our dinner reservation was at 6pm and I was hearing all clubby music. Don't get me wrong I love a dance, clubby music however I'm not sure if that's the I wanna hear in the middle of my dinner, unless I'm in a place that there's performers, or a show during my dinner I could see that but the restaurant wasn't busy at all and it was also a little loud. My family was in town visiting and my mother is Filipino and doesn't have a lot of Filipino options near her, so we always go somewhere when she's visiting. Instead of doing a traditional American feast for an early Thanksgiving meal, I saw Kubo does Kamayan feasts and was so excited to book it. Everything was great - It was so much food and fun. They had Silog, lumpia, chicken, prawns, pancit, ribs, green beans, and much more. Instead of the traditional spread that everyone shares communally, they portion the feast out for everyone so everyone is guaranteed a chance to try it all (and no one has to worry about anyone else's dirty hands). They have all sorts of other options besides the Kamayan feast, so I'll have to go back and try those. The owner (I think she was the owner) was so warm and friendly to us. I wish this place was closer to my neighborhood as I'd go all the time! One thing to note if you so want Kamayan is that you need to contact them at least 48 hours in advance to book so they can prepare. It's not something you can just walk-in and get. Grab your family and/or friends and try you a Kamayan feast soon! read more

Overall: Given that it's one of the few Filipino places in the area, Kubo fills the gap well and hits the spot! The good: While the menu selection seems somewhat non-Filipino, all of the food was great and seemingly authentic. The skinny egg rolls were a great start to our meal, followed by the fantastic adobo pork ribs. The tangy yet sweet sauce was perfectly ratioed to cover the tender meat, and the sauteed veggies and rice were a perfect combo. That, and the portion sizes were spot on. Oh, and the cocktails were strong and tasty! The not-so-good: The atmosphere is lacking in terms of flair and character. While certain elements are added in and welcome, there is still quite a lot of bare bone-ness to the layout overall. Also, the service was almost overwhelmingly quick when it came to picking up our plates. Several times they tried to take our plates, even when we weren't finished with our meal. I really wanted to like Kubo. I was excited about dining here and we had reservations. We were dining before seeing a friend's show across the street. I was pouring when we arrived and everyone at the front of the staff seemed irritable about the rain that was being tracked in. They trooped us through the very narrow and tight restaurant to a space in the far back - a table for two right by the kitchen and the bathrooms. My husband had a view straight back into the kitchen. We were also elbow to elbow to the other diners around us. We had dripping wet umbrellas that made a soggy mess all around us, but know one seemed to concerned at first. We put our wet umbrellas under than table and then all of sudden their was interest. The manager instructed his staff to put a bucket up front, gave us disapproving glances as they asked for our umbrellas, then had his staff mop up around us. I promise we didn't bring the rain into the restaurant on purpose. The spot we were seated was kind of dark. It was hard to see the menus or our food. Our waitress as very helpful and sweet. She did a fantastic job of describing the dishes. I thought the cocktail dress was interesting. I had a French Martini - one of my favorite drinks. There's was much redder than normal - I'm not sure what they do different, but I enjoyed it. My husband enjoyed a Filipino negra beer. I thought their drink prices and dinner prices were reasonable for the most part - some on yelp say they prices are expensive for what you get. I ordered the pancit at our waitresses recommendation. It was $18. The dish had nice flavor. What I take exception to is that the shrimp were tiny shrimp that compare to the kind you buy in a can or pouch at the grocery store to be used in a cold shrimp salad, and I wouldn't eat that salad...they are gross. I order a variety of shrimp dishes in many different states in the $16 - $20 price range, and for that price they could serve a dish with 6 to 8 nice medium sized shrimp. I'm not sure I can forgive the inferior shrimp that was served. My husband had the por adobo and it was lovely. I could probably forgive the shrimp in my dish for this lovely pork dish. It was so tender and came with a cabbage mix salad. The down side was the bland rice. It seemed like the staff was quick to scoot diners out of the restaurant when they were done, then they would scoot the tables around while rearranging them into different seating patterns - noisy and distracting. On our way out we ran into a friend sitting at the bar. He had a yummy looking burger and fries. His wife was performing on the production across the street, and that's why were were there. He chatted with us a bit, and the bar tender actually joined in the conversation since he had gotten to know our friend and the actors and actresses in the show. When we left he told out friend - I thought they would never leave so you could eat! Shocking and funny at the same time - I guess it's nice that he was looking out for our friend. However, after seeing all these great reviews on Kubo, along with the fact that it's Filipino cuisine mixed with an American flair, I caved in and checked it out. I actually had my husband's surprise birthday dinner here. Communicated directly with the owner, Christine, here on Yelp and was able to reserve the patio for a group of 25 people. Christine was awesome to work with and always very responsive to any questions that I had along with any requests that I had. The patio space was perfect. Also it's an extension of the restaurant, it was nice and warm, and perfect for hosting a party. The food was amazing, just like my fellow Yelpers have been advising. I ordered the pork adobo, but had portions from others plates that included the fried red snapper, the curry chicken, and the fried chicken inasal. All were deliciously flavored, and the presentation of the food was very nice. A lot of our party also ordered the longanisa burger, which is cured sweet pork grounded in with beef, and topped with a fried egg. I actually will save that for my next visit and didn't want to ruin the experience by nibbling of off someone else's plate. For dessert, we ordered the ube ice cream. That did not disappoint and was perfectly creamy and flavorful, just like how I imagined it to be. The service was exceptional. First of all, this was the first time my husband and I went into this restaurant. My step daughter and her husband took us there around 5ish or so, and not a single person was in their except the restaurant staff, and the owner, who was a VERY nice person! He went over and beyond to take care of us. Came over and suggested different things, asked us what kind of food we like. It was the best restaurant experience I've had in a long time, if ever! We got some egg rolls, a sausage and peppers dish, for appetizers. My entree I got the Baby Back ribs that were Asian style, kind of like Asian BBQ. It came with a cabbage mix that was sautéed, and garlic rice with toasted garlic on top. From the appetizers to the entrée, this place was amazing!!!!!! My drinks I ordered a Martini that was fantastic!!! It had Black Raspberries, and pineapple juice in it. For garnish were red grapes...SO GOOD!!! He brought us over shots, and it was amazing too!!!! Now, with all of that being said, I felt bad because I could not finish everythingI wanted to. He kept asking me if I liked the food, or he questioned me and would say, did you not like? That's not the case AT ALL!!! I loved every single bit, but what he didn't know until I told him, and I don't know if he fully understood what I meant, but I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy on June 28, 2021. I'm roughly 6.5 months post op. I WANTED to finish everything!! My new pouch wouldn't let me! I did the best I could because the food IS addictive! The appetizers oh, and about the appetizers, we also had these amazing chicken tenders too with a spicy sauce!! Anyways, the batter on everything was so light and crispy, and HOT (temperature)!!! I hope the owner realizes how much I loved the food since I couldn't finish my drinks or food. I loved it all. I'm still new at learning how much I can consume. We had a great experience at Kubo! Overall the food was excellent and I loved their partially enclosed patio. Food: We ordered the tuna ceviche and fried spicy shrimp as an appetizer. The spicy sauce that came with the shrimp had just the right amount of kick and they were delicious. The tuna ceviche was our favorite appetizer since it was so different than anything we've had. The mangos mixed with the tuna was a great combo! For dinner we split the pancit, adobo pork ribs and shrimp curry. We all loved each of the entrees and how different and flavor every meal was. The shrimp curry was my favorite but they were all very tasty! Ambience: It was a gorgeous evening so we sat on their patio. It was partially enclosed so we were shaded from the sun but it still had a great outdoorsy vibe. I loved the look of the patio and it felt very comfortable but still like we were at a nice restaurant. The inside of the restaurant also looked very nice and put together. While scrolling through my Yelp feed, I noticed a friend bookmarked this new Filipino restaurant! My boyfriend is Filipino so we obviously had to check this place out, and we are so glad we did. We chose to sit outside and their patio is very nice. For our appetizer, we ordered the pork adobo. It was so good that we wished we got it as the entree instead. Apparently it is a very popular dish here and I can see why! For our entrees, we got the Pancit and Longanisa burger w/ fries. My boyfriend is STILL talking about the burger. He is a huuuge longanisa fan so he was so excited to find this on the menu. Lastly, for dessert, we finished with the Ube ice cream. As expected, very tasty. Everyone was also very friendly and made sure we were comfortable. Excellent service!! Only downside is the entree price. If the entrees were just a few dollars cheaper, they'd be perfect! Started off with the fried fish/shrimp balls. They were great by themselves but amazing with the house aioli, which had a nice kick to it. Orange colored aioli never disappoints. Also got the pork ribs adobo, which were good but honestly was expecting more after our waiter raved about how they're the most popular dish. My main was the whole fried Pampano, served with rice. Presentation is beautiful: fanned out and stood up like a sculpture atop a pond of your typical sweet and spicy sauce. Fish tasted fresh and is actually good plain but the sauce is a nice complement too. Waiter was friendly, restaurant was casual/chill with outdoor seating (outdoor but still under a roof), pop music playing. Had the feel of a bar/tiki bar. read more

I've eaten here twice, and is not very vegetarian friendly. The first time I had the vegetarian curry option, and that was okay, though the chunks of squash seems under-cooked. The other options were essentially vegetable sides and veggie eggrolls. My friend really enjoyed the chicken eggrolls, so the next time I went, I ordered the veggie eggrolls. They were out (insert sad trombone). The Asian veggie side has a wonderful flavor, seriously good, but the guacamole was a miss. They were very heavy handed citrus, to the point it lost flavor. It's fine, but it made me miss Coopers. I used to eat there often before shows at 773 or Wit, but now there really isn't anything on the menu would entice me to dine there again. read more
