Andrew found the Norad Cafe for us and I am glad he did. This is worth a quick stop just to take a look at some history. The cafe is just inside the main door. It is glassed in so you go in and order at the counter. The breakfast menu has many of the breakfast things on it that you might want and is reasonably priced. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with tots, Andrew had a breakfast burrito, and I don't remember what Jim had. I though my breakfast sandwich was excellent. It was simple with an English muffin, sausage patty, fried egg, and a slice of white American cheese. I don't know why American cheese color is regional, but it is, and that is what I expect here. Anyway, this was a simple yet delicious sandwich. The tots were ok but they were under a heat lamp for a while. Andrew enjoyed his burrito. The coffee was very good too. The cremee was excellent and loaded with maple flavor and just as good as the one at Vermont Cookie Love in Ferrisburgh. My husband got the fudge, and he loved it. As we headed toward the back of the shop to see if they were selling creemees, we saw they had samples of apple donuts out. They were tasty, but definitely could tell they were made earlier in the day as they were not too fresh. We assumed they were probably trying to clear out their inventory for the day. We eventually found the soft serve machine and ordered a maple creemee. I should start by saying that I'm not a big fan of maple, but if I'm going to try a Vermont creemee, I had to order a maple one. It was perfect, great texture and just a hint of maple taste. My husband asked to try it and he ultimately claimed it as his own, so we ended up buying a second one. So good! Service was okay. We got a weird vibe from the lady who was helping us. She seemed annoyed and very short while we were checking out the food and trying to order our creemee. Maybe because they were going to close soon? Not sure. But that was the only negative about our experience. The Apple Barn is definitely a cool spot to visit if you find yourself in Bennington. Stopped in yesterday and got a raspberry pie and a "walnut" brownie for myself. I ate the brownie on the drive home. It was dry, hard and contained pecans, not walnuts. Not a big deal for me since I like both walnuts and pecans. But still ... The pie might be the second worst raspberry pie I've purchased (second only to one that never gelled). First, it's salty. EW! It should be sweet and tangy. Heck, my husband wouldn't mind tart. But salty? No. Second, I paid $22 for a pie with what looks and tastes like canned raspberries. The filling if very syrupy, gooey. Either that or they misused ClearJel rather than tapioca or corn starch for thickening. It's so thick, it coats the back of your throat, like you've eaten corn syrup poured over smashed raspberries. It doesn't taste like the appropriate amount of sugar was added to the filling either. It does not taste fresh at all. It tastes like one I could have picked up at the grocery store. As a matter of fact, I think Hannaford's has mini pies that are far better.
