The Apple Barn is a cute, albeit touristy stop on the outskirts of Bennington, offering a plethora of Vermont-made food items, both fresh and pre-packaged. They also sell some non-food items, as well, such as t-shirts and sweatshirts. We bought a box of 6 little jars of Vermont-made jams and some maple syrup to bring home to CA, as well as a maple flavored "cremee" (Vermont's version of soft serve ice cream) to eat there and some maple fudge. The cremee was excellent and loaded with maple flavor and just as good as the one at Vermont Cookie Love in Ferrisburgh. My husband got the fudge, and he loved it. They also have many bakery items, but we actually didn't buy any of that. We were quite satisfied with the ice cream and fudge. The Apple Barn is worth the stop and has lots to offer. I'd definitely make my way back here if in the area again. read more

This is a jam packed shop that's curated in a way that will be a tourist's dream. It's cute and clean and organized. Everything Vermont can be found here. It smells like maple and sweet candles. There are clothing items, food items and gifts. We went specifically for a maple creemee as part of our maple creemee crawl. We decided to go affogato. The creemee fell short; it had pieces of what tasted like butter. it was chunky and not good at all. We enjoyed our visit despite a failed creeemee. Everyone was so pleasant. read more

Amazing maple soft serve ice cream!!! This soft serve had maple bits in the soft serve, which definitely the flavor. When I first went, they ran out because it was so popular. On the way back, we stopped by again and they finally had it. I can see why they ran out the first time. I also had the apple strussel and it was on the softer side. I wish it was warmer and crispy, but was a great flavor. The service was normal. You just order with one of the workers and ring it up with the cashier. Their cheesey bread is to die for. Extremely light and fluffy with the perfect amount of cheese flavor on it. It's like I sprinkled some cheese on my pillow and turned it into bread. I didn't even toast it, just ripped it right off the loaf. Give me a break I was camping so my bread eating morals were thrown out the window but it was just so good that it didn't even matter. Now for their fudge brownie, I just had to have one. It was super fudgy and chewy. Only thing it needed was to be the slightest bit more moist but nothing 10 seconds in a microwave couldn't save. Aside from that, I know this is the Apple Barn but I honestly didn't even get to anything with apples in it. Wait actually I tried their apple cider and it was really good. This place had tons of local products, fresh bakery items, popcorn, there's plenty of things to try here. Aside from the cheesey bread their staff was cheesing too. Everyone working here was like so happy to be there. I felt like I was in a Hallmark movie. I love it! I swung by the Apple Barn while visiting Bennington, and was glad I did: this store/bakery has maple items galore, cider, VT items, a modest bakery, and more. I grabbed some apple cider (cinnamon) donuts which were tasty, but admittedly didn't have as much of the apple/cider taste as I expected. What really earned the 5th star was the very friendly customer service of the staff and the enjoyment of just wandering around the store taking it in. I also bought some apple pancake mix and maple butter (which I have never tried) which I am really looking forward to. If I am back in the area, would love to swing by again! read more

We came to apple barn today. We have been here many times over the years as my in laws live in north Adams MA. We spoke to Sarah and secured the last rhubarb strawberry pie and also an apple pie among other things. It was amazing. We also got some merchandise and apple cider donuts. This was one of our stops while cruising through Vermont on a day trip and on our to - visit list as we compiled a variety of fall activities we ought to do. The barn and the country bake shop is pretty large sized compared to other farm stands and orchard gift shops and even holds a small dining area for those who wish to enjoy their goods on the spot. There were many items including a variety of kettle corn, chocolates, maple syrups, cookies, pies, apple cider, cider donuts, beer, wine, hard cider, cheese, sausage, pancake/waffle mixes, honey, pumpkin and apple butter, and of course apples! My friend and I were offered several maple syrup "shots" ranging from light to dark and robust types. We couldn't resist but to taste all of the maple syrups on the sampling table. With the sugar high we induced, we picked up a few items to go...some Woodchuck cider, apple cider, pastries, mini apple cider donuts, maple hard candies, and boxed maple cookies. The caramel apples and chocolate dipped apples next to the homemade fudge seemed yummy too, but we had a lot more to explore in the day, so we skipped. They also offer orchard tours and PYO berries we would love to do sometime. This is definitely a stop not to be missed for all your tasty souvenir needs. read more

Lots of hype And it falls flat This is nothing special, many years ago it was a great place but now this place is exactly what someone from New Jersey would turn an authentic Vermont country store into if they took it over, which they did. The bakery was limited in the past but excellent now there is great variety but the food is sub par and looks and tastes like a kindergarten class made it on a day it was raining too hard to go outside for recess. Lemon burst something or others, just yellow cake with lemon pudding on it The Apple pie was horrible!! The Apple filling was good, who can screw up Apple slices with sugar and cinnamon? But the crust was terrible tasting, nothing but pure flour and the bottom crust was undercooked with big chunks of flour sitting there, absolutely horrible.No one could eat it. We also got raspberry filled lemon poppy seed muffins....What a disaster. The muffins were burnt on the outside and dry as a bone inside and the "filled"part amounted to one teaspoon of raspberry jam on top. The Apple cider donuts were ok. Not great. Very commercial tasting. Paulin's gas station in shaftsbury has better, more authentic and home made Apple cider donuts that they run out of so get there early. Overall the Apple barn was a huge disappointment, they ruined it, and the only people fooled by it are the tourists who have never been in a real Vermont Apple barn before. I've never actually been to the Apple Barn before but I needed desserts for my destination wedding. I ordered 7 dozen cider donuts and 9 pies (different flavors) for 70 guests. The donuts and pies were huge hits and were much more fun than a wedding cake (in my opinion). Our guests got to try multiple flavors of fruit pies and took home leftover donuts. I was informed by several guests that the peach pie was "incredible" (unfortunately I didn't get to try most of the flavors, including peach). I live fairly close to the Apple Barn, but never tire of my yearly sojourn to buy their luscious caramel apples, fresh warm cider donuts (the best around), and some of their H.M. baked goods. The last caramel apple I had form here was the BEST EVER...huge, tart, crisp apple covered in a thick layer of delicious gooey caramel.....and the plain is SO much better than the ones covered in peanuts or other gook. Their pie is a little inconsistent. Sometimes it can be outrageously good (I like the mixed berry pies). Lately, they have had big squares of lemon cake for sale- and it is to die for! If anyone out there is familiar with "Lemon Lu-Lu" - this tops it! Light, moist lemon cake with a layer of lemon cream near the top...I don't' know how they do it, but my oh my..I am getting fat because of this yummy concoction! Hard apple ciders. Baked goods. Little nick nacks. Something you'd expect to cater to the countless tourists finding their way down the road. Apple Barn did not disappoint in any way. The store really was really pleasing to the eyes as well with very clean, attractive rest rooms. Overall I can't think of anything negative to say about the experience. I used to work in Williamstown, MA and would make the 30 min trek to this delightful bakery. Pownal is a middle-of-nowhere town and the Apple Barn is a hidden gem. It has interesting events in the fall including a corn maze for the kiddies. But, let's get down to what's important: The pies. I LOVE the apple crumb with a mix of brown sugar and oatmeal. I try to go every time I visit family in Massachusetts. They have a fair selection of Cabot Cheeses, which is a nice addition to the bread they sell. They have a sunflower grain bread that is out of this world. They also make cookies, which aren't too bad, but the apple crumb pie is #1! Heard they are now selling cake, I'm making my way up North again soon, so I'll repost if it's any good! The Apple Barn consists of a bakery and a store selling your usual Vermont goodies that you can find at any tourist hole. The cider doughnuts are out of this world. They sell lots of them, so at any time on busy weekends your doughnuts will be hot and fresh. They are crispy on the outside and extremely light and soft inside. I know my cider doughnuts, and these may be the best I have had. They also sell other assorted baked goods, pies (and half pies), breads (yeast and quick breads), brownies, etc. The touristy section has your usual moose themed mugs, t-shirts, maple syrup, maple candy, a small assortment of Vermont cheddar, jams, jellies, etc. They also have some pick your own fruits depending on the season. I've been stopping here for a few years now anytime I'm in this area of VT. The cheeses are top shelf and cannot be missed. The cider mini-donuts are addicting. The strawberries I bought earlier this summer were the best I've ever tasted. I can't wait for this year's apple crop! And that is just a small sample of what is in stock. But on top of having high quality inventory, I had an experience here yesterday that will keep me coming back forever. I pulled into the lot about 5:25 and upon getting out of the car was told by an employee that they were closed. My disappointment evident, he conferred with the owner, who was already in her car, and they opened the store back up, took me in through the employee entrance, and allowed me to grab the items I wanted to purchase.
