This place absolutely lives up to the hype!…read more We stopped in on the way to Burlington for southeastern Massachusetts. We actually even stopped on the way back. It was so good. Of course, we went for the mac & cheese. We were surprised at how much other stuff they had, like fresh, baked goods, a deli, prepared foods and an amazing dessert case! They have tables next-door at the store that you can sit out and eat your food out. It has cute little gifts and local food items that you can buy. We had the mac & cheese on the way up and on the way back, bought more mac & cheese, some kale slaw, and some fresh made deli sandwiches. My sandwich was great, my wife got tuna and I will say they could've added a little more for the price. The rancid was rancid so I actually threw it away and didn't get to try it. Everyone was great from the guy who checked us out to the Deli person who made our sandwiches. If this is on your way, definitely stop in, you won't be disappointed.

We were able to get a spot in front with no issue, but I imagine that this was because it was a week day. We chose the Mac and cheese and the maple pulled pork. Both were worth the hype in my opinion. The mac and cheese was super creamy and paired well with the tender pulled pork. The baked goods were nothing to write home about. Maybe we just chose the wrong items? We tried: Oatmeal cookie - good, but not amazing. Chocolate chunk/ peanut butter cookie - stale as heck and basically inedible. I always am leery of saran wrapped cookies that are out on display because its impossible to know if there are actually fresh. The giant stacks of cookies were too enticing to pass up on. The chocolate cookie we purchased was definitely not fresh at all. $3.29 down the tubes - lesson on saran wrapped cookies learned (again). Carrot cake whoopie pie and original whoopie pie - both tasty, but the cake was too thick for my personal liking. We sat in the small outdoor seating area to eat. This was a nice little reprieve from the car ride.

Worst experience in Bennington! Do not patron if you enjoy…read moreany level of hospitality & actual value. I came in cheerful & this guy ruined the day... I ended up leaving angry and literally cried.... Their online ordering has a Reuben with an option for $2 extra meat & a note box so I cld have written there asking for the extra portion on the side. EASY. Yet, I went in person to see what the specials were hoping for a great lunch, because Im here for medical procedures at the hospital and had fasted since the day before. Id never been to The Elm Street Market before, but it was close to the hospital, & love Vermont markets for all the years I have lived here. But THIS place :: T E R R I B L E mistake! The employee at the counter was as fake & uncaring as it gets, & shld definitely not be the customer guy. He would not just let the added side be $2 , but wanted to weigh it out & charge me for a deli style $6 sliced side in a package as an addition to the $14 sandwich. ($20 Reuben?!) I said I didn't need or expect a package of sliced cold meat, that I was just adding the side portion to share with my pups. For Lunch. He just becomes patronizing, dense, & fully lacking capacity or willingness to help and says he "can't bc it just doesn't work that way" unless I get it on the sandwich. I cld order it online but not with him at register. And for some reason he cant figure out a $2 portion of meat. Surreal Incompetence. The next level of downhill not-so-fun is seeing the tiny soup. A cup of soup for $8. A latte "special" that I cld not even taste the smoked maple flavor and was only 3/4 full. It's actually shocking- what happened to actually CARING about just helping ppl have a good experience if you are working in the restaurant business as a small local independent market? Hey Elm Street Market Fella, you cld do the simplest things like not try ripping ppl off & being kind! His patronizing attitude & lack of capacity really took it over the top- how am I supposed to enjoy this $36 ordeal? Supposedly he is refunding the meat, bc I explained I didn't order a package of meat. He took it out of bag & literally said "take your sandwich & drink & go". I was upset~ I said this is truly unacceptable ~ try some Kindness & Authenticity! And left. The other young lady who was working that day & witnessed this whole debacle seemed to feel bad making 'Im So Sorry' faces. She at least offered me a dollop of maple syrup & noted the drink was not filled~ but also was being oppressed by his attitude. I cld tell he was being an overbearing tyrant. Wtf - this is NOT Vermont as it should be DUDE. All it took was putting a few slices on the side for $2 & filling up a drink. Ridiculous.

there are many many 1* reviews here which seem to do with the proprietor. speaking for myself,…read morejust the pass'n tru life kind, this is one of those indescribably essential places YOU MUST NOT MISS. outside of course you're drawn in by the odd assemblage of moose statues, and of course maybe even wonder whatup with this. of course you realize that moose are seen here now and then, wanderers likely on a pilgrimage from their native area in the adirondack region. but it's easily dismissed unless you reflect on what may be inside the building. in my case, i drove past it maybe a quarter mile before realizing what i was about to miss... true rural americana, eccentric in all manner and aspects. i turned around, of course. the property is littered with all manner of handmade replicas of whatever, though i don't recall any of those wind-driven whirligigs, ever popular among the natives here. i took a few pics to add to the pile though really a camera doesn't do this place justice. if you're tempted to park in a veterans only spot, correct your attitude unless you qualify: show some respect, willya? i needed something to justify my going inside, and figured i'd buy some apple cider donuts, a few to keep me company. i was on a long drive west to the thousand islands where i was headed to stay with a friend in his cabin on oak island, and as grocery stores are scarce there i had to bring something to eat. i bought a dozen, they were a bit stale but then i prefer stale donuts. now the personal touch here ain't too gentle. the old man is crusty, but even crustier is his son, or so i assume he must be. one or both seem to have picked up a little limp along the way possibly as result of military service. whtever the case, only a dedicated first degree relative would be able to handle this job working with the old man. inside the place, there is every conceivable knick-knack ("small worthless objects, especially household ornaments" oxford online dictionary says) that exists, most made in the usa. for some reason though the vibe here isn't real welcoming so if you want to browse around, be sure to make it seem that you are looking for SOMETHING in particular. probably though nobody will give you a second glance until you begin to make your exit. i suppose there was a time when the place was visited by some hapless shoplifter, at least that might explain the lack of friendliness here. if so, i suspect he never came back after being treated to the wrath of these guys. and really, what is there here that anybody might want badly enough that they'd risk stealing rather than pay the man his $10. hell just walking around this assemblage of stuff is worth that as price of admission. i say give the old man and his son a break, they seem at heart nice enough men, just need to get their ashes hauled now and then.
