Winchester's Store in Pownal, Vt., five or so miles south of Bennington, Vt., and just "over the line" from Williamstown, Mass., on US Route 7, has one of the best deli counters in New England. It's nothing fancy. Quite the opposite: painted cinder blocks and basic groceries, a few coolers for the beer, etc., and a first-come first served policy at the deli counter. Jim Winchester, who has owned the place since 1988, is a careful listener and a superb sandwich-crafter. He takes his time with each order. Meats and cheeses are put on bread direct from the slicer (no pre-packaged /weighed kits here) and are carefully constructed and reasonably priced. Daily specials (the meatball sub or sandwich is legendary and don't miss the seafood salad) join no-frills potato and macaroni and tuna salad in the cooler for side dish options to accompany the truly home made sandwiches at Winchester's. read more
