Watching men young and old hold open the door for ladies, smelling the coffee and ever cooking hot dogs on the roller grill shows small town life for what it is: families, people living together in harmony. Today's feature was freshly made apple fritters. Coupled with a handmade chocolate milk shake, life is good. The store holds basics for life: bread, eggs, milk, soda, beer, soups and other canned goods as well as all sorts of ice cream and frozen treats. There is little that can be needed, from matches to mustard, that the store doesn't have. Outside the gas pumps are humming while customers in transit replenish treats for their trip. I appreciate the presence of this store and highly recommend stopping in whenever one is in Arlington.

It's nothing fancy. Quite the opposite: painted cinder blocks and basic groceries, a few coolers for the beer, etc., and a first-come first served policy at the deli counter. Jim Winchester, who has owned the place since 1988, is a careful listener and a superb sandwich-crafter. He takes his time with each order. Meats and cheeses are put on bread direct from the slicer (no pre-packaged /weighed kits here) and are carefully constructed and reasonably priced. Daily specials (the meatball sub or sandwich is legendary and don't miss the seafood salad) join no-frills potato and macaroni and tuna salad in the cooler for side dish options to accompany the truly home made sandwiches at Winchester's.

So glad the gentlemen at the meat counter were so prompt and helpful while I was making my selections. I will definitely return for the meat counter. It was my husbands birthday, so I also grabbed a cake and some desserts for the fam -- the cakes are about what you would pay at Price Chopper, but in my opinion, they appear to be made with more attention to detail. If you're having a hard time finding birthday candles with numbers, they have a huge selection next to the cake counter and some Birthday cake pieces as well. The way to shop at this store is by learning the regular sale days. Tuesdays deals are: $5.00 12 inch pizza $3.99/lb Chicken Breast $5.99/lb ground beef $5.00 rotisserie chicken Fridays deals are: 2 for $5 burgers Each week they choose a different fresh deal, so you'll likely find a deal for $5.00/lb meat. This evening it was carne asada chicken breast cutlets. Other elements that I really enjoy is that their olive bar has Dolmas!! It's the only one that I know of that carries them in the area. When I'm out and about, it's not always easy to get there so early so it's a bummer when you are intent on something specific. I really like their fruit tarts too. They come individual sized, as well as a standard pie size. It's the perfect bite after a meal or whenever as it's not too sweet and it's quite good. Lastly, the shop is always nicely organized and the staff is helpful. All this makes for a regularly pleasant shopping experience.
